Great instructional video. I will have to replace my rack ASAP, I was very frustrated today as it began leaking badly with no previous signs of weeping or any fluid loss. Your video was very helpful, and there seems to be something about your vocabulary and accent that is very calming and reassuring. Thanks for sharing! Subscribed.

Thanks for the help, geezer....took me a bit longer as getting a decent second-hand rack took some searching out, and even new washer/joints for the rack fluid banjos proved a headache in the backwater where I live, but did get it done. Raising a glass to you now, cheers!

Be doing this repair on our 2001 VW beetle pretty soon. It's been weeping out fluid for a while now. Not horrible yet-But it's getting there. First noticed it when I replaced the inner tie rod end about 8 months ago. Pulled the bellows/boot off and got a handful of PS oil for my effort.
We might do the subframe replacement and control arm (RF) at the same time. Nailed a pot hole or something and the subframe and control arm are bent inwards. I still think it was a speed bump gone bad.

@@rynedude Pulling the rack and putting it in was a few hours but I had a lot of corrosion on my return line which after sanding I treated it with a rust destroyer, painted and let dry overnight so it took me two days effectively. Bmac's video makes it go smooth.

I'm just taking off a rack of a Mk 5 Polo which is similar, but you make it look so easy! Unlike the crap Haynes manual and the 'minimal content' VW manual (when you can get it). Only other comment is try and use a light underneath when filming, but excellent anyway. Thanks.

The rattle gun is a godsend, but so is your video. Little trick for those with a lot of rust and a seized tie rod. Pull the rod upwards with one hand, and give the knuckle some big whacks with a big hammer. Never hammer the rod itself, unless it comes loose very easily like in the video.

Can you do the subframe without taking out the rack and pinion steering? I stayed my control arms yesterday and the outer bushing on the drivers side just spins and spins in its place without loosening or moving out what so ever. Every other bolt came out no problem but it's either cut the control arm off at the subframe the use a reciprocating saw to cut through the bolts. Is there anything I can do besides all that work. Is there some kind of tool that can pull a bolt out while wiggling it back and forth. The strange thing is that the impact gun still makes abb impact sound even though out spins very easily. Any help please!

i am building a mk4 golf gti as a track car and wanting to remove the power steering altogether.
is this possible by simply removing the power steering pump and fitting a shorter belt?
or do i have to fit a manual steering rack to the car? thanks!

Is because lack of graphite like you said in that tutorial, is it new brake pads noise or lack of steering rack oil...it kinda whistle noise type. thanks

I know the 2001 Cabrio is considered a "mk3.5" sharing many parts from the mk3 golf/jetta/cabrio, i've noticed on websites the part numbers for a new steering rack is different compared from a 2001 cabrio vs a 2001 golf, thank you for the awesome video!

Hey man just had a question. Do any of the banjo bolts need a washer ? Or is it just the bolt right on the hose. I believe there’s 3 banjo bolts, one for power steering pump to high pressure line, pressure line to rack, and then return line to rack.
