    Hi! While I LOVE all the Reality Dog Training episodes, so far all the dogs featured have been large dogs. Do you plan to do a run featuring a small dog, like a toy breed, sometime? I find a lot of people tend to treat small dogs entirely different (not even treating them like real dogs), so it'd be interesting to see a Reality Dog Training series featuring something like a chihuahua sometime. Keep up the awesome work!

    That takes a lot of restraint for a dog who got his meals when opportunity struck on the streets to leave it. It took months to keep our adoptee from the streets out of the trash until she learned she would be reliably fed. (And a trash can lid that secures!)

    Chop has the cutest expressive face... he is on board for any adventure you have in store for him! Now that we are adding more non pain corrections such as a vibrating e collar her dog is making leaps and bounds towards a better behaved dog. I have an E collar that does not even have the shock feature.

    Dogs need boundaries like kids and firmness/assertiveness has its place.

    • @janhankins911
      @janhankins911 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that sometimes you have to be firm. Assertive? Depends on how you define assertive. The science says you don't have to use punishment and that you don't have to depend on aversive techniques (and doing so can make things worse--resulting in aggression). I always equate being "assertive" with being domineering and demanding and willing to get your way even if you have to be rather physical about it.

    • @janhankins911
      @janhankins911 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FullOfRandomness02 I think a lot depends on how one defines "firm" and "assertive". If, by firm, you mean mean-spirited, I don't agree. If by firm, you mean consistent and becoming a benevolent leader, then, yes, you need firm. Check out any journal article or textbook by a positive trainer and you'll find your confirmation. Victoria Stilwell, Zak George, Dr. Patricia O'Connell, the late Dr. Sophia Yin, Dr. Zazzie Todd, Pat Miller, Emily Larlham (Kikopup), Dr. Alexandra Horowitz, Dr. Nicholas Dodman, Dr. Debra Horwitz. I could go on, but I'll leave it at that. That's an excellent start.

    • @janhankins911
      @janhankins911 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FullOfRandomness02 I don't think there really is any "science" on setting boundaries for dogs--but there is for children. That has worked for the trainers I've watched and studied and has worked for me, but I couldn't really find any "science" on that. I could find some on consistency of owner behavior. For example, Arhant, et. al. (2010). Behaviour of smaller and larger dogs: Effects of training methods, inconsistency of owner behaviour and level of engagement in activities with the dog. Applied Animal Behaviour Science, 123 (3-4), 131-142. Faguzza & Miklosi (2015), Social Learning in Dog Training: The Effectiveness of the Do As I Do method compared to shaping/clicker training, Applied Animal Behaviour Science, 171, 146-151. There are others as well. Do a Google Scholar on something like "owner consistency in dog training".

    I think you’re great with him. I have a siberian husky (read ABSOLUTE BRAT, LOL). I used a shake can (soda can with some pennies inside and taped shut) to train him to stay off the kitchen counters. It worked beautifully and one year later, he still doesn’t get on the counters, no matter what is up there. He just sniffs and walks away.

    Hi Zak (and Bree)! I’ve been a sub since I got a miniature poodle in 2019- exactly the time you started your dog training series with Inertia. ❤️
    I’ve really enjoyed all of your dog training series since then. Honestly, “reality dog training” is such a novel idea in the internet space. Bravo. 👏
    I just had to comment that in this thumbnail Chop looks like a puppy in both shots of him! Cant wait to find out his breed (hopefully) next week. My good friend and neighbor has an unknown breed dog that I am very sure is majority Anatolian shepherd. He’s naturally extremely territorial. He’s also really smart and perceptive.
    I saw in your live stream that we should stay tuned for a small dog series. I love all dog breeds but would love to see this one specifically. Trying to train loose leash and deliver treats to a small dog that’s so low to the ground is difficult and back breaking. I’d love to see your adaptation.

    Love the videos! I inherited a 6 year old dog with ADHD (can dogs have that?). He is a 6 pound Yorkie so like, the opposite of Chop. Great dog but soooo challenging. Still working on house training… how is that going with Chop? Do either of your books cover the following: how to train a mostly blind and totally deaf dog, how to keep a dog from scratching at the door to be let back inside, how to keep a male dog from spraying ALL OVER EVERYTHING!!?
    Keep the videos coming!
    One more thing… here is something I’ve gained from watching the videos that might surprise you. I am a highly reactive person and still struggle with anger issues. Watching your videos has been a huge help in reminding me of the value of patience and kindness, not just with dogs but in a general sense. You [and Bree] are such a good model of the importance of compassion, a calm demeanor, understanding, and patience. Thank you so much for all that you offer!

I had a Amstaff, one day I was preparing chicken, I was distracted and had to leave the kitchen by the time I returned the 1 kg (2.2 pounds) of chicken had been devoured by the dog (fortunately I had anther Kg in the freezer). My only solution was to ensure all food was pushed to the back of the kitchen bench. I now have 2 Japanese Spitz the male tries to check out the counter fortunately he is too short to reach the top. I will try your method.

    Can't wait to find out what Chop is! I just ordered a doggie DNA test for our new pup. We live in rural Iowa and my brother in law was in a combine, harvesting some corn, and found a 8-10 week old cold, wet puppy, and we took her in. if I had to guess a german shepherd lab retriever mix because or her markings and labs are everywhere here.
    We had already been thinking about getting a puppy soon (I wanted spring time because potty training isn't so cold, but here we are!) and she looks so much like our dog that passed a little over a year ago. I've been binging past puppy episodes, but she figured out she needs to sit to get attention/food the very first night she was here and has been doing amazing in the kennel and potty training- still doesn't have it perfect of course, but she catches on quick. She's very smart and just what our family needed! ❤️ Oh, and we of course called her Harvest- but Harvey for short. 🙂

    Going to take a lot, a lot of time. We recently, well a year ago, adopted a 4.5 year old, unsocialized 90lb male German Shepherd. He's doing well, not perfectly yet, but we'll get there. Very smart and athletic, loves loves loves Kong discs. Not extremely fond of anything on four legs. We've tried space, great for a short time. We've tried various refocusing techniques. To tell you the truth, I don't see him ever getting to a point where we can let our guard down. On a walk, no distractions, perfect. Distractions? Depends on the day, but usually begins with over stimulation, restraint, refocus and retreat. Can't get far on a walk that way. Not a fully fence yard, 1.25 acres, natural barriers mostly. He's learned the boundaries, and stays in those boundaries, even when the neighbors are out or making noise. If they have their dogs out, forget it. He did bolt for the lot line and it took 3 no commands, but he did stop a few feet past and did an about face butt skid to obey. NICE! Very pleased with that. We'll keep it up, but I feel that it will be age that deters him most. Had we gotten him sooner, it would have been a different story.

    Like to see you walking Chop with a long lead. I actually do this for my dog when we're in areas where you can't let them off. I have a 30' horse lunge-line for a leash (I couldn't find an affordable long leash here in Canada and the lunge lines were only $30, so it was a good compromise.). I love it because I can roll/loop it up and have a short leash where necessary or let her off to be 'off leash' without endangering her. Although you DO have to watch for distractions. If the dog decides to take off and chase a deer, or a cat, or a squirrel. . .it can hit HARD. -.- (Learned that the hard way. Oops. NOpe. I didn't lose her, but I did get a rather nasty rope burn. lol) But all in all, it's great to give them some freedom on walks.
    Good boy, Chop. He's doing so well in such a short time! I love this dog. I wish I could take him. (I can't. Between my current dog, health and current circumstances, it wouldn't work. But one can dream!) I love big strong dogs like this and he's a good boy!! I mean, he's untrained (or was rather? Still green, how's that?) , and a little stubborn - but he doesn't seem to be aggressive at all. Just. . .curious. I look forward to seeing where he ends up.

    You little teases! 😉 I've been dying to know. I don't really remember what I guessed in the beginning; and I think my list of potential breeds has grown. I hope you don't mind me playing along by listing my guesses..... 1. Akita 2. Siberian Husky 3. German Shepherd and maybe, just maybe...... 4. Wolf; and I know this is a long shot, since they're pure white, but his size and his tail make me feel there is a slim chance he might have some 5. Great Pyrenees somewhere in his lineage. 🐕🐶🐕‍🦺😃 I just can't wait to find out; but I guess I'll have to manage somehow. 😄

    I don't understand why you won't correct him when he is jumping for the food, so he would understad that the behavior is unwanted and would learn so much faster than just luring him away all the time (not telling him what you actually want). He doesn't understand not to jump because he doesn't even know it is not wanted

      @@kristibelle9854 I would rather have used both ways; positive reinforcement for making a good desicion not to go for the food, once he knows it is not allowed. Now it seemed that Zak only rewards him for reacting to "come" or following him around but that doesn't teach not to actually jump up on the table when he is not supervised

    My dog is more out of control than this one. I took him to the SPCA as a last resort and they were going to put him to sleep. I ended up keeping him when I wasn't going to. He bites, barks, jumps, tears into skin and clothes, and does not listen. I need a miracle.

    I marker train, which is the only difference I'd recommend for off-leash manners around distractions. Eventually the dog sees a distraction and is conditioned to automatically look back at you for further instructions. It will work your way, but it'll take a lot more patience.

      @@johnwellbrock70 to me he seems like a typical independent outside dog. I'm sure he can convert him but as you said l think he will regress quickly without a very good owner. And how many owners are going to be like these two? I've seen lots of farm dogs or wrecking yard dogs that are like Chop. Smart but very independent and really don't need helicopter owners fawning over every move the dog makes. It is interesting and educational to watch their show though.

    • @marcia7115
      @marcia7115 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      He'd absolutely regress if the new owners don't put the work in and build on the foundations Zac has laid. That's why so many board and trains don't work when the dog goes home. Chop absolutely needs an experienced owner who can be fair but firm with him by giving him clear boundaries and expectations of what is and what isn't acceptable behaviour. Consistency will be key for him to continue to grow. Easier said than done though. Professional dog trainers make traing dogs look easy. It isn't, timing is everything and that comes from real life experience not reading a book or watching utube videos. On top of which there is no quick fix for reactivity. I'm confident they will find him the right home. He's a lucky dog.

      @@Heart_of_Grace this is a perfect example of why l refuse to pay more than a couple hundred bucks for a dog. I've seen awesome expensive dogs and horrible ones. Same as free dogs. great dogs or useless ones. Cost has no effect. And these dogs had good owners too. All the cost does is make people keep trying because of all the money they have tied up in it. At that point it has nothing to do with love for the dog. Same as these people keeping dogs around that are biters or cat killers but are too expensive for them to do the right thing. Anyways l feel for you making this tough decision.

    Amazing!! What to do about a dog that is small, dominant, pushy and high energy that reacts with aggression to only a few choice dogs in the area? Where the other dog is doing absolutely nothing wrong? Otherwise he listens very well to me and is highly motivated by both treats and tug toys. But some dogs he goes berserk around. Even at some distance. 😩

    love your training videos! I got a border collie who doesn't 'steal/take' foods when we are around (i.e. i can't catch her in the moment and she won't counter surf when we are around). however, when we leave food on the counter (tightly against the walls) and leave the house, most of the time, she would have taken the food when we get back. Without catching her the moment, how can we train her not to counter surfing?

    Have you ever dealt with a puppy injury? My 20 week old puppy has had a cast on the last few weeks and we have a couple more weeks to go. It’s been really tough especially since she’s a picky eater. She barely eats on her own. I don’t wanna keep on spoon feeding her but I also really want her to get the nutrients she needs to heal and grow :(
