Hard to break dogs from climbing fences. I had a Dalmatian that would wait until everyone left for work then jump up onto a 6ft fence and walk it all the way to the front of the house. At that point she would jump down, then go visit neighbors. We would always find her laying on the front porch when we got home. I discovered what she was doing by fake leaving one day. I started my car, turned it off and just sat and waited. When she got to the end of the fence preparing to jump down, she looked up and we locked eyes. The look in her eyes was priceless. She knew she was busted. Dogs are very smart.
We had to put up a hot wire for our catahoula. She was determined to be free. My husband has one for his heeler mix because he digs under the fence and as soon as he gets loose he forgets he even has a name. Recall is non existent. We’ve had him almost 7 years and have managed to train him to kennel inside. His sit depends if he wants to.
I feel this is a thing with all dalmatians. I have a 1 year old dalmatian and when he was 9 weeks old he started climbing up his puppy pen to get out. Hahaha
As someone currently studying positive dog training. I love how you show, "the dog did this which means this so I should change my strategy to this" or "the dog did this which we don't like, so I need to do more of this to better show him what to do" Not every dog trainer that is mainly online (that I know of) shows that or the failures and trials. Only the stuff that was done perfectly. So I really admire that side of your show and hope to do the same when I get out there in the field with other dogs.
I agree! I think a lot of online dog trainers will show you one method working with one dog, when in reality dog training cannot be a matter of cookie cutter techniques. It’s really just a matter of getting to know the dog and constantly adapting yourself to mesh with its own style of learning, while applying principles of behavioural science. For example, my dog is a sooky bitzer with a lot of affectionate breeds like border collie and pit bull in her, so if she does something naughty an “uh uh” is more than enough to stop it. On the other hand, I’m currently looking after and training a naughty, spoiled beagle x cavalier, and she is the definition of ratbag. (I’m aware that the concepts of naughtiness and misbehaviour is just us anthropomorphising our dogs, I don’t genuinely believe dogs act out of any malice. It’s still fun to describe their personalities though.) Using a verbal correction on her is the equivalent of “damn, I’ve been caught! Time to make my escape!” Since it would only hype her up more and cause her to run away playfully. I can’t catch her so I have to abandon my go to strategy as it would inadvertently reinforce her running away with potentially dangerous things in her mouth. In terms of teaching leave it (because she would without hesitation eat anything in sight unless restrained 100% of the time) I had to switch to using a spray bottle for general around the house prevention before she grabbed something, and work on praising her whenever she stayed still and let me take any non food from her (since any food she did grab was gone in milliseconds). She’s a difficult case since she’s a very smart puppy, has a major stubborn streak and has a family that I suspect lets her get away with a lot. I know that if I followed a by the book tutorial I probably wouldn’t find much success.
I really love the journey of George and Chop ❤ non aggressive training is the way to go and I really appreciate the way you take the responsibility and adjust the method 😊 Thank you for your amazing videos!!! From me and Opo the Pitbull🐾🐾
Every time I'm struggling with training, I hear your voice telling me that my dog just doesn't understand what I'm asking so I have to change what I do and how I ask her to help her learn. It makes training so much more enjoyable, positive, successful, and less frustrating for both of us! Thank you for doing these series' and for sharing your training methods in real life situations 😊 So glad Chop is OK! Must have been terrifying to watch it happen!
You'll forever be my favorite dog trainer because of how honest you are in the process. Until I found you guys, I always felt like I was doing something wrong when my dog would do something crazy or unexpected, because it didn't appear "perfect" or like they were constantly making progress like a lot of trainers make it seem online. I was so discouraged in the past when my dog would have bad training days! Glad to have this series to show that it's not always simple or easy to train a dog and even professionals struggle at times. It makes training not as daunting. :)
OMG! You guys got me choked up twice! I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my best buddy (Calvin... An 80lbs Husky Beagle mix) a year and a half ago. He died of heart failure in our arms. I still get sad. I'm so glad chop is okay (you have to keep him... He has the same personality as Calvin). We just rescued a lab mix stray from a shelter and she has revitalized my outlook on life. She is sweet and smart and you are helping us train her. Like Chop no people skills at all. I haven't watched Chop's story yet. So, I'm looking forward to it. Thank-you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
I just adopted my first dog ever two weeks ago. He has leash pulling and reactivity problems like Chop. I love that this series mirrors everything I’m going through right now - it gives me so much more comfort and hope. My boy has a lot of potential, he just needs some work, patience, and positive reinforcement, and I’m learning from the best through videos like these. Thank you Zak! Your videos gave me courage to adopt Rocky in the first place :)
I watch a variety of dog training videos including "balanced" trainers who use e-collars and prong collars so I appreciated it when Zak mentioned that some trainers might choose to use an ecollar to train Chop to focus and walk better on leash and then he explained his strategy. It was refreshing because he didn't disparage using an ecollar while explaining why he felt his approach was just as effective and may even help Chop to progress more rapidly. Thank you Zak.
Agree with this highly! I’m a balanced trainer and I get some heat from people on the street when using muzzles or e collars but it’s a $300,000 accident waiting to happen otherwise at times. Really appreciate him more now on this comment alone.
@@kamiwilson3615to each their own. Sometimes treats and kisses are not all a dog needs. There are such things as protection dogs, police k-9, military dogs, other forms of working dogs, and others who otherwise do not respond to traditional and positive reinforcement training methods such as dogs who have no interest in food or toy rewards. I’d rather someone use an e collar to save a dog from behavioral euthanasia. Many deaf dogs are trained with vibration settings on e collars. They are not necessarily abusive unless you use them incorrectly or with the intent to abuse.
I feel pretty confident that Chop was sensing bears in that first training session. I’ve always lived in bear country somewhat similar to this and dogs are always the best signal for when they are around. They can smell them and their dens from so far away!. The nervous body language at first despite his normal comfort outside and the constant looking to the bushes…I’d bet that a nice lil bear was either chilling out in the bushes a little bit away or had recently been. nothing to be worried about though, a good amount of loud talking, singing, or barking is enough to keep most (non grizzlies) away. They also make big jingle bells you can put on your dog so they don’t sneak up on a bear and keep them away, like a dog sized cat bell 😂 thanks for the great content
I was scared he had seen a bear and was trying to get down to go after it! So glad there was no wild animal and that he handled the fall without injury!
Amazing dog, so glad he didn't get hurt. Things can happen quickly and no matter how hard you try, accidents happen. What a shame Chop won't be able to be out on your deck alone anymore. Sure wish we could get our almost 1 yr. old yellow lab to heal like Inertia. We'll keep trying until he gets it right. Thanks for all you do.
So glad he’s ok…and thank you for showing us the human aspect of training! We love watching these real time rescue dog training sessions! It helps us mere mortals to not become frustrated and feeling like we’re failing our pack!
I just have to say - I am obsessed with your videos, thank you so much for teaching us and sharing ALL flaws, not just actors ï'm so good at this nothing can go wrong"things!
As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. His training techniques and tips really work. Thank you as well for dedicating your life's work to rescue dogs, and to rescuing those of us who want the very best for our 4-legged family members.
Bree my heart broke for you over losing Indy, I hope you are feeling stronger and able to remember all the happiness you shared with her💕 Zak thank you for being able to show when things don't go according to plan, I love how you think of what else you can try until Chop understands what to do. Kindness and patience in action is a wonderful thing to see.💖
Finally! the episode that drew most of us in! Fitting that this is airing on Halloween.🤣 Great to see how trained Interia has become from this point in her series.
This video helped me today! I’ve been really struggling with leash pulling and heal with my 5 month old husky. We just had a nice session in the back yard. He’s making progress.
I am so glad you are showing the bad along with the good. I do not think people realize how much goes into working with a dog-- definitely not 15 min. a day!!
I’m so glad Chop’s okay! I can’t imagine how difficult that was for you! Thank you for sharing these moments with us so that we can learn and be aware. It also helps to know that you make mistakes sometimes too because I definitely make mistakes. Thanks for all you do and all you share! 💜
Zak I can’t tell you how much you have inspired me. I have your book and I’ve been prepping for a while now to get a puppy in the new year. Watching every series gets me more confident that I can start my girl up with the best life. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us, you have changed so many lives I’m sure. From across the pond in England, all my support and heartfelt thanks. 💕
Hello beautiful people Zak and Bree.. thank you for sharing and so happy Chop is ok...like you keep letting us all know..this is reality. Something else you have bought to our attention..love you guys xx
WHEW! 😨 I am S0 relieved to see that big boy Chop is okay after the balcony incident. He is in store for an incredible life after you guys complete his training. I am looking forward to following his journey with your videos. 😊
Bree, I feel your pain. We love our dogs just like family. Zak, Inertia is amazing. Thank you for your courage to share your mistakes. None of us are perfect.
I’m so sorry you had to experience that - sounds absolutely terrifying. And it would have been SO hard to foresee that happening, don’t blame yourselves at all! You are both amazing
Another EXCELLENT episode of problem solving with the walk! Thank you for walking us through pivoting through real life scenarios of getting the dog's attention and what to do if one technique (lure) does not work as well as you want. The episode where Chop and Inertia get acquainted was an GREAT verbal translation of their body language and what is going on~I hope you do more of this type of documenting. And Chop plunging off the balcony! Holy Smokes! Had a neighbor who's blind Jack Russell did the same in Idaho~plunged several feet off a railing~then nonchalantly sauntered off into the landscape unfazed and unscathed~dogs are amazing!
I learned a lesson from a somewhat side point: when I come home, just give myself a few minutes instead of racing to the crate to release him! He certainly was chill before I drove up, so instead of a highly-charged 'reunion' (after a quick trip to the store and back) just get myself in the door and breathe (or unpack groceries, etc.) and then have a 'I'm glade I'm home, too' moment. THANK YOU!! [So glad Chop landed like a cat and is okay!]
Met a bunch of dogs this weekend at various Halloween events. One owner commented on how well his normally skittish dog received my greeting, and I shared your advice about offering chin-scratches instead of head-pets to dogs who don't know you. Then later I passed them again and commented that they'd had success with multiple other introductions by following that plan!
I would love to see more of inertia! She is so well trained and I would love to see a compilation of all of her tricks or something! I still enjoy and love the foster dogs you trained these past series tho! keep it up! Learning so much from all of these videos!
Y'all are amazing 💖 thank you for working with these dogs and finding them homes and giving them a chance at a good life they wouldn't have otherwise ❤️
I just had to pause the video. Come on people that was the funniest comment Zack has ever made. His wife says I could get eaten by a bear and she's being all serious and kind of scared and Zack goes we could get a lot of subscribers from that. I mean come on people that's some funny funny stuff right there!
Oh, I laughed out loud with that one! Zak and Bree are the BEST--always keeping things real which is the best thing you can do for those that are training their own dogs or other dogs.
Chop reactivity to other dogs is exactly what I’m going through with my 9 month old lab. He adjusted to people walking around us quickly, but when dogs are around, I can’t seem to get far enough away to train with him. The other dogs have to be completely out of sight and scent. Looking forward to seeing you tackle this!
Very honest and true experiences for dog training. I watched Zak videos while training my puppy. I thought wow I was stupid owner that fail to understand the video tutorial. There was up and down while I was training my puppy however he is now 3 yo great awesome dog and I am very proud for him and myself. By seeing this current series, it seems I am not alone. Even professional has difficulty and they also learn from the dogs as they have unique personality as human are. Thank you for your very honest videos. I love it and always become my way to train n understand dog 😁. Love from Sydney
It is great he is okay! And I think it is good that you all are being transparent with your viewers. My pup jumped off of and much lower porch, but landed on concrete and busted her chin a little. Sometimes, we have to see things like that to open our eyes to some of the dangers we need to watch out for.
Wow how scary 😧. I’m glad he’s okay And again so sorry about Indy. I know how you feel. They are part of your family. I still miss my Paris even though it’s been a year now and I have another dog. Nothing replaces them. Great series. Thanks for sharing
you should do an episode on how you train two dogs at once, and train bad behaviors they have towards each other. that’s what i really have a hard time with. you can use my dogs as the test subjects 🙂
Hi, I’ve been watching your videos for a long time. All the way back to when you were training Cona. You are the best dog trainer I have seen on TH-cam. I have always wanted a dog, and if someday I do get one, I will watch the Inertia series again. Thank you so much for all the kind things you do to help dogs!
I have been fostering and training dogs just little over a year now. I can not tell you the help your videos have been. And showing the mistakes takes this weight off my shoulders so many dog training videos only show the ups. I would find myself so discouraged. I also lost my sweet Owen in July I had him his whole life but he was only two years old. He was my best friend and got me through the 2020 ! It has made this new journey with my new dog Marie more complicated. I love her so but I have never dealt with a shy anxious dog with the added layer of skin issues that make medicated baths (which she hates) a must every other day. These videos make me feel not along. I look forward to coming home from church and settling down for them. Thank you guys so much.
Bree, I so understand you feelings about Indy and your tears. You had me crying, too. I know exactly what it's like to lose a dog you love more than life itself. Glad Chop is okay after his skydiving experiment. Question for Zak--do you play with Chop and get out some extra energy like you did with George before training? If not, why not?
Wow! So glad he's ok, what a scary moment - we've definitely learned that our pup is always 1 step ahead of us! Thankyou for sharing these videos with us 😊 these things happen to many people, you're doing your best & it's amazing to watch! Stay safe 💕
I love that you started this video with a Inertia demonstration! More of the please. 😊 It was nice seeing her performance, playfulness, and love on video. What do you do if a dog runs up to you while you're walking a dog that typically responds aggressively to exuberant encounters with other dogs?
I wanted to say thank you for all your tips. I’m having such a hard time with my Catahoula leopard mix dog but your advise has helped and thanks for the link to the bark box!
I think you did a great job starting Chop's heal training. All in all, he's doing pretty well for you only having him 3 days. I'm very relieved also that he didn't injure himself jumping off the deck! Thank goodness he landed in the fenced in area! Thanks for being willing to show us and good and the bad of dog training. It helps us all to learn. Keep doing what you're doing Zak! (and maybe adopt Chop yourself :) )
... speechless...h-how..w--what...im sorry you had to go through that...i know what that feeling is...he gonna be ok.Also please dont cry you make me cry☺️.I hope Chops ok cuz once i saw the intro in your first episode and then when it comes to Bree crying i was like...oh my god..is he gonna be ok or is he like.anyway keep up the good work and know that we love you guys.
I’ve been watching this because my dog has very similar habits and I always thought her and chop shared some physical attributes. She’s an Anatolian shepherd and if chop turns out to be one that would make a lot of sense!
Wow, that was plummet! I'm so glad nothing happened. I just purchased one of your books and I'm so excited to read it. Amazing series so far! Keep up the good work!
So nice to see Inertia again. She's beautiful and very well behaved. Chomp has the most amazing eyes and I'm sure you will get there with him. Scary watching him jump off though! 🙂

He seems really visual oriented, more than most dogs. HIs frisbee game is going to be insane!
I'd like to see him get a chance at lure coursing. He's probably got a lot of practice chasing squirrels, etc.

Then later I passed them again and commented that they'd had success with multiple other introductions by following that plan!
Holy cow beautiful job on Inertia's heel!
probably the only trainer i've seen that trains on harness. pretty cool!
I'm so glad he's with you. I hope you keep him. This was an amazing video and I'm sorry he jumped. What an awesome guy!! Go Chuck GO!!
I paused to make sure people were laughing with me. Love you guys!
Oh, I laughed out loud with that one! Zak and Bree are the BEST--always keeping things real which is the best thing you can do for those that are training their own dogs or other dogs.
Lol I am not the only weirdo.
If I had been drinking something at that time, then it surely would’ve been spit out of my mouth due to uncontrollable laughter. Haha
You’re a great person. Thank you
Very honest and true experiences for dog training.
I’m glad he’s okay
And again so sorry about Indy. I know how you feel. They are part of your family. I still miss my Paris even though it’s been a year now and I have another dog. Nothing replaces them. Great series. Thanks for sharing
Wow….you did have to share this but I’m grateful you did. Love your videos and thanks for all your sharing!!
Zakky Zak you look soooo good with the glasses I LOVE them on you!! It gives very ✨debonair✨!!!
Sorry for your loss..
you should do an episode on how you train two dogs at once, and train bad behaviors they have towards each other. that’s what i really have a hard time with. you can use my dogs as the test subjects 🙂
Omg so glad he is ok❤️❤️
You both are great
I have been fostering and training dogs just little over a year now.
Oh man you were so lucky, things happen soooo fast! In 1 blink everything can change
I love Anatolian Shepards! I was working with one once and I came into the barn and found her chilling on top of an 8 ft cabinet.
I love that clip of Zak stopping Chop from peeing on the furniture and immediately telling him, "Sorry." 😂 This is like how I communicate with my dog.
Astonishingly good. The leash training had terrific "practical" nuance. Beautiful work.
I love watching Inertia do her tricks with you... smart girl!
Im so sorry for the loss of Indie. I sure know what it's like losing a beloved pet
That's a high fall! Lucky has the wild dog instinct.
So glad he’s okay!
Let’s just take a minute to think about how good of a dog trainer Zak George is
Phew. Waiting til this episode to find out he was ok was really stressful. Thank goodness. Xx
Thank you once again Zak and Bree for a great video 😊 Accidents can happen to anyone, thanks for being honest and sharing 😊
Wow! So glad he's ok, what a scary moment - we've definitely learned that our pup is always 1 step ahead of us! Thankyou for sharing these videos with us 😊 these things happen to many people, you're doing your best & it's amazing to watch! Stay safe 💕
17:55 What an absolute champ! Well done Chop!
I love that you started this video with a Inertia demonstration! More of the please. 😊 It was nice seeing her performance, playfulness, and love on video.
What do you do if a dog runs up to you while you're walking a dog that typically responds aggressively to exuberant encounters with other dogs?
Things always happen for a reason, this is not your fault , that dog is very resourceful and smart , u and your wife r doing a great job keep it up 🙏
“We would probably get a lot of subscribers” haha Her face when Zak said that haha
The video looks great on my chromecast now in SDR!
Yay! Excited for a new video from Zak! 😁
So lucky he landed in the big yard!
SO glad
I love learning from you Zak
Aww you look good with glasses, Zak!
love the honesty
Oh boy you really have your hands full but you're an incredible trainer! I'm looking forward to see how it goes.
My heart jumped when i see Chop jumped off the balcony ..... glad he is okay, Chop Chop!
I meant that was a plummet.
I love that you show all sides of dog training and life. Had you not shown him jumping we would have not been any wiser.
I agree with bree on the anatolian mix, and they are great for the area your in!
You can see the moment the doggo learned that it was a very bad idea. I am glad he is Ok!
So nice to see Inertia again. She's beautiful and very well behaved. Chomp has the most amazing eyes and I'm sure you will get there with him. Scary watching him jump off though! 🙂
