Agreed. I work with some seriously anxious rescues that may expel that nervous energy with aggression... Would love to see more behavioural issues with reactivity/aggression in older dogs. I focus on behavioural modification with 80% of my clients. Lots of COVID puppies too! But some of the toughest cases I've had are the anxious or nervous dogs that are tough to get engaged as they don't have much interest in food or toys so building a working relationship is more difficult. I am a balanced trainer but I am always seeking useful positive reinforcement for all types/ages of doggies and clients! Anxiousness and nervousness followed by symptoms aggression or reactivity is so common right now due to COVID and so many full shelters! So yes please Zak, would love to see you do some confidence building and behavioural modification for this issue, as it would relate to SO many dog owners right now 🙏
@@joyfulk9services it’s not recommended to use any type of aversive techniques on fearful or aggressive dogs. It’s literally written on the packaging of your “tools” because it can lead to aggression on the handler.
@@mlynn998 In some cases that is true for sure, not for all cases though. Every doggie and handler is different with their mental and physical needs/capabilities. I love Joel Beckman on TH-cam, he talks about this a lot, and does not use tools either, just gentle leaders and flat collars. I'm all for what works! going positive is obviously the best and ideal first go-to. Sometimes takes weeks or months to find the best recipe and balance of all quadrants to set all parties up for success 😊 it does not always work to "remove" unwanted behaviours, as by definition "positive" is adding something to the equation. Definitely the right first step! But if it does not show improving results, many techniques and methods may need to be tried next! That's why there are a variety of trainers and styles, important to find the right recipe for the individual human and dog 🙃🐕
Really enjoying these series. My heart sank a little when you said you'll focus on a puppy next. Puppies get adopted so quick and there is so much material on TH-cam for them - also on your channel. I feel you've done a lot of good with adults like George and Chop. Please do more of those, show people they are indeed big babies who become great family dogs :)
Hi Zak, I've been training my 1.5 year old GSD, Mac, following most of your steps with some good improvement. I think he's like Chop, where it is over-excitement that causes him to react, rather than aggression or serious anxieties. The one thing I have been not doing, though, is playing fetch! I am buying into theory that fetch increases adrenaline spikes and leads to cortisol, like many other folks.. I'd been playing fetch with Mac LOTS every day as he's a working line dog - as well as bringing him on long walks away from people with dogs, due to his reactivity. I have seen a major reduction in Mac's behaviour in the week and a half that we have stopped playing fetch. We play tug of war instead and do scent work in the yard. On our walk yesterday, another dog was within threshold, and whilst he did react, it was not nearly as bad as what it had been previously. I lured him the other way with his favourite training treat - cheese - and he calmed down a lot quicker than he normally would also. I definitely feel like there's something in that. Going to try some positive association tomorrow (rewarding with cheese when he sees dogs in the distance in the park) and see how much further we can progress. Thanks for all the help with every other aspect, though! It's trial and error with every dog. Mac is my first dog with reactivity and I'm determined to help him no matter how long it takes.

Absolutely C I’m in exactly the same boat. My pit and I have a lot of work to do on even listening let alone getting him to do anything else other than looking at it and barking haha

Curiosity can change to aggression in an instant. I have witnessed this many times, especially when the dogs are on a leash and both are very energetic and high drive. Think about two intact males meeting and they suddenly decide they need to have a „conversation“... And curiosity is where it all starts.

It's a long shot, but I'd deeply appreciate it if you trained a dog with hearing or vision impairment. My puppy is deaf and partially blind, which naturally presents its own unique challenges---communication-wise, behavior-wise, even play-wise. There aren't a lot of resources for disabled dogs, but there are plenty of deaf and blind pups out there and they deserve some time in the spotlight!
I would love to see you help a blind or deaf dog. I’m fixing to adopt a puppy that could Potentially have hearing issues. It’s hard to find a series like these here helping a dog with a Disability. If you did Skype calls I’d totally sign up just for this sort if help. I committed to this puppies care before i knew all the details and now I’m completely committed to giving him the best life possible.

Watching Chop makes me miss my reactive dog. He was wild, no training and picked up as a stray. He taught me so much about dogs body language. Can't wait to see the puppies!

Great work with Chop on his impulse control! He's improved no end. Especially when the smallish white/grey dog walked by on the street so close. That dog was very interested in Chop and eyeballing him, ears forward etc. That Chop sat quietly next to you and just watched? Fabulous. You've done so much work with him. I feel sure that parting with him is going to be very hard for you as there's quite the bond :-)
I believe Chop is becoming the dog he should be , He listens to you well you can see he is processing in his mind what your asking, He will be an awesome boy for a responsible owner soon. The puppie series shall be nice to see as well. However i do have a reactive dog myself who is two.
Asking for which puppy isn't an easy thing , but I would say , choose the black one , that is climbing right to You and maybe also the one at the left side , he looks so sad . Just do a series with two puppies ! 🥰🤗

So Chop is already potty trained , he told You that he needed to get out . Great progress for a dog , that was used to have a potty break whenever he was feeling like needing it . :-D

Hilarious moment when a Zak George ad is on a Zak George video and I think it's part of the video. Honestly, I hate going by looks when adopting a pup. Everyone picks dogs based on how nice their coats look, how pretty their eyes are, etc but that can end up sending the dog (back) to the shelter or back to the breeder. Leading to heartbreak for owner and pupper. So honestly, I would see if one of the pups chooses you or seems like the best fit based on personality. I personally usually prefer shyer, more mild dogs. But you guys seem to like the more outgoing and affectionate dogs. So maybe see if you can find a pup like that?

I like the idea of all 20 puppies! Seriously though, have you considered getting 2? I would love to see how you train 2 puppies together and I think it would be super helpful for many of us who have adopted 2 at the same time! I got 2 huskies when they were 6 weeks old -this was 31/2 years ago and I really struggled with training both together -and honestly, I still do. They learned at different rates and required different motivators sometimes. Teaching them to walk/heel together is still a work in progress. Also, I love your reality series, very helpful! Are you up to the challenge of 2 puppies????
Most trainers don’t recommend bringing home two puppies at a time, actually! One puppy is a lot of work, and two is even more; it’s hard to guarantee both dogs are given enough individual attention and training to develop into well-adjusted, independent adults. (There is an anecdotal term called “littermate syndrome” that encompasses behavior issues that can develop in puppies who become codependent on each other.) Also, six weeks is really young! I’m surprised you got two puppies so young. Most (ethical) breeders send pups home between 8-12 weeks. I hope you have good luck with your dogs. Sounds like you’ve been working hard over the years to cater to their individual needs and differences, which is the best thing you can do with any dog.
Getting two puppies at the same time is the worst mistake to make. No responsible breeder would ever allow two of their puppies to go to the same home, or even a knowledgeable shelter
@@marmelium actually, littermate syndrome has been debunked. It’s not actually due to them being siblings that causes the issues. It’s that it’s extremely difficult to meet the enrichment and training needs of two puppies at the same time.
@@marmelium Thanks for clarifying this. I don't want anyone to think it is recommended or the best idea to get 2 at the same time. However, many of us still do this. In my case, it wasn't the worst mistake because I had a lot of time off to spend with them and my daughter (16 at the time) was a big help. I do think it would be interesting to see how a trainer would handle 2 together and give a lot of people some insight on why or why not to get 2 at the same time. Maybe I could have done a better job or if I had seen a video such as this maybe I would have reconsidered getting 2. I wouldn't give them up now for anything though! Thanks for your comment.
@@claw.5464 Perhaps you are right, but I do think there are exceptions. The circumstances would have to be right and of course a responsible breeder would thoroughly check out the entire situation and what is best for the pups and owner.
My boyfriend and I don't have a dog but we want one in the future and I love watching your videos too lern what things you have to think off that aren't obvious. I think we won't take a rescue at first but hopefully later on. I had bad experiences with the rescue my father had. He would drag me through the woods as a child chasing some bird and was scared of ever dog and humans.
Love watch Chops improvement. I try to incorporate the training with my puppy. Mostly we are doing well, but I do not have the luxury of spending 24/7 training, so it is a little slow going. Any time we do have though, I do try to continue training. There are a few hicups with her still wanting to jump up to the counter, and she gets rage zoomies if she is really bored. But we know why, we still need to train.
I like the brown one that kind it has the wolf markings(the 1st one with the basket ball)I also like any of the black ones The most those are the ones that caught my eye
My collie is getting Pupford's snuffle mat and rabbit training treat combo for Christmas. First time for me ordering from Pupford but I believed I'll like their stuff quite well.
I’m a big pupford fan! The training treats are the highest value treat my dog has had, other than actual regular chicken. Love their double hand six foot leash.

Please pick the puppy who seems the most timid and fearful!!! Working through fear reactivity and working on building confidence is SO difficult and it is hard to find resources for help with this.
If a young puppy is truly timid and fearful without an abuse history, that's just the genetics of the dog, you are never going to rehab a dog out of its genetics, best you can do is manage the situation and keep your expectations realistic for the quality of life s/he will have...
@@JunieBJones-tn4yi I believe that is the case with my cattle dog pup. They are very alert dogs anyway. She's been timid and fearful since we brought her home at 8 weeks. Definitely strong genetics. We are managing and desensitizing and playing a lot to decrease stress and anxiety.
@@KellysGarden Yes it's tough with an alert, sensitive dog especially a smart herding breed. Have you considered taking nosework classes? They are great for building confidence in shy dogs.

Wow, it really is beautiful to see. I love your detail, and explanations. You make it look so easy. It does go to show you that this really has to do with OUR knowledge and training. I have seen or heard much of this, but it's easy to forget. You are inspiring. And I love your calm attitude. I know every dog is different, but there is much to use here. I have a ball obsessed dog, so my challenges are slightly different, but I see things I can use. I especially love the reminder of how to teach spin, and shake 🥰. I honestly hate walking my dog. He pulls SO hard, the closer we get to home.. I've resorted to keeping him on the short short leash, and holding him next to me. There is no training method that works once we're headed home. Unless I have a ball in my hand, and then he is a different kind of pain in the ass to walk. Which shows my ignorance, I know.

Bree is the expert, not me. I've never made a video, other than an animation for class. From this one viewer's perspective, I'd just like to say that it's okay for Bree to look at Zak when she's talking to him. I enjoy seeing the interactions between the two of you. She could look back and forth between Zak and the camera. That way, Zak would feel like she's really talking to him and we could still see Bree's pretty face. Zak! 😆 "I know. I highly doubt that this method will result in anything remotely reliable.
Zak please please please consider my pitsky for the new series you have on reality training. He is not aggressive he’s about to be one year old and indoors he’s the best dog you can ever imagine. But outdoors is a different story . I know he can be trained I have worked with him out doors and I know it’s my poor technique. But the biggest challenge is his strength. He can pull a train and out of nowhere. Like I said he’s not aggressive at all toward humans and for the most part likes other dogs. But has had issues with aggression towards other dogs. And it worries me if he were ever to get lose . Pleaseeeee consider! I really need help and so to others with big strong dogs with a lot of kind features.
Watching this video with clyde my 4 year old rescue I had for almost 3 months. As the dogs bark in the video he is noticing it but trying to calm him. Training him while watching on the couch!
We will get a puppy in 2022, next liter , we will get a tibetan terrier , have to watch your clips about bringing up puppies to be well prerpared. When the puppies are born , where do we have to look for chosing a specific puppy from the litter that will be a good match for us ??
Watching your videos had helped me make tremendous progress with my Saint Bernard, but I still have a lot of work to do with her. I wish you would do a series with a dog as large and strong as her, because attaching the leash to your belt is not possible with a dog so big. I have to keep her anchored to something that can't move while working on her training, and it's very difficult to get her into a public setting safely.

He won't because that type of level intensity, he wouldn't be able to control.
You would see him fail and he knows that. So he sticks to the easier dogs

He's never done a rescue puppy tho. And people tend to believe that stray puppies/dogs are stupid and untrainable
I would not be surprised if a reason they're looking to train a puppy is because they're looking to reopen their home for another dog.

Mine were like that, I kept going outside everyday and exposing them to dogs, after a month they barely pull. You got this!

It's a long shot, but I'd deeply appreciate it if you trained a dog with hearing or vision impairment. My puppy is deaf and partially blind, which naturally presents its own unique challenges---communication-wise, behavior-wise, even play-wise. There aren't a lot of resources for disabled dogs, but there are plenty of deaf and blind pups out there and they deserve some time in the spotlight!
I would love to see you help a blind or deaf dog. I’m fixing to adopt a puppy that could Potentially have hearing issues. It’s hard to find a series like these here helping a dog with a Disability. If you did Skype calls I’d totally sign up just for this sort if help. I committed to this puppies care before i knew all the details and now I’m completely committed to giving him the best life possible.
It's really neat to see Chop's progress. He is doing so well and his reactivity is getting better. I really enjoy your adult dogs series, especially seeing dogs that need work, so I would like to see more of those. I'm curious about your comment near the end of the video about how all your training basically got undone-it will be interesting to see what caused that to happen. But keep up the good work! Watching Chop makes me miss my reactive dog. He was wild, no training and picked up as a stray. He taught me so much about dogs body language. Can't wait to see the puppies!

He couldn't train the dog at all, his "positive reinforcement" training doesn't work on this type of dogs, but he still swears by it.
I like this series. It gives me some fun activities to dog with my dog while also teaching a lesson.

Great work with Chop on his impulse control! He's improved no end. Especially when the smallish white/grey dog walked by on the street so close. That dog was very interested in Chop and eyeballing him, ears forward etc. That Chop sat quietly next to you and just watched? Fabulous. You've done so much work with him. I feel sure that parting with him is going to be very hard for you as there's quite the bond :-)

You should pick a pup that has a hearing or sight issue. Show people how to overcome a dog disability.

So Chop is already potty trained , he told You that he needed to get out . Great progress for a dog , that was used to have a potty break whenever he was feeling like needing it . :-D

Looks very smart which makes training easy at first but you could show us how to pick a puppy and what happens when getting a smart dog.it's demanding in the long run...

Honestly, I hate going by looks when adopting a pup. Everyone picks dogs based on how nice their coats look, how pretty their eyes are, etc but that can end up sending the dog (back) to the shelter or back to the breeder. Leading to heartbreak for owner and pupper.
So honestly, I would see if one of the pups chooses you or seems like the best fit based on personality.
I personally usually prefer shyer, more mild dogs. But you guys seem to like the more outgoing and affectionate dogs. So maybe see if you can find a pup like that?

I like the idea of all 20 puppies! Seriously though, have you considered getting 2? I would love to see how you train 2 puppies together and I think it would be super helpful for many of us who have adopted 2 at the same time! I got 2 huskies when they were 6 weeks old -this was 31/2 years ago and I really struggled with training both together -and honestly, I still do. They learned at different rates and required different motivators sometimes. Teaching them to walk/heel together is still a work in progress. Also, I love your reality series, very helpful! Are you up to the challenge of 2 puppies????
Most trainers don’t recommend bringing home two puppies at a time, actually! One puppy is a lot of work, and two is even more; it’s hard to guarantee both dogs are given enough individual attention and training to develop into well-adjusted, independent adults. (There is an anecdotal term called “littermate syndrome” that encompasses behavior issues that can develop in puppies who become codependent on each other.)
Also, six weeks is really young! I’m surprised you got two puppies so young. Most (ethical) breeders send pups home between 8-12 weeks.
I hope you have good luck with your dogs. Sounds like you’ve been working hard over the years to cater to their individual needs and differences, which is the best thing you can do with any dog.
Getting two puppies at the same time is the worst mistake to make. No responsible breeder would ever allow two of their puppies to go to the same home, or even a knowledgeable shelter
@@marmelium actually, littermate syndrome has been debunked. It’s not actually due to them being siblings that causes the issues. It’s that it’s extremely difficult to meet the enrichment and training needs of two puppies at the same time.
@@marmelium Thanks for clarifying this. I don't want anyone to think it is recommended or the best idea to get 2 at the same time. However, many of us still do this. In my case, it wasn't the worst mistake because I had a lot of time off to spend with them and my daughter (16 at the time) was a big help. I do think it would be interesting to see how a trainer would handle 2 together and give a lot of people some insight on why or why not to get 2 at the same time. Maybe I could have done a better job or if I had seen a video such as this maybe I would have reconsidered getting 2. I wouldn't give them up now for anything though! Thanks for your comment.

My boyfriend and I don't have a dog but we want one in the future and I love watching your videos too lern what things you have to think off that aren't obvious. I think we won't take a rescue at first but hopefully later on. I had bad experiences with the rescue my father had. He would drag me through the woods as a child chasing some bird and was scared of ever dog and humans.
Love watch Chops improvement. I try to incorporate the training with my puppy. Mostly we are doing well, but I do not have the luxury of spending 24/7 training, so it is a little slow going. Any time we do have though, I do try to continue training. There are a few hicups with her still wanting to jump up to the counter, and she gets rage zoomies if she is really bored. But we know why, we still need to train.

My collie is getting Pupford's snuffle mat and rabbit training treat combo for Christmas. First time for me ordering from Pupford but I believed I'll like their stuff quite well.
I’m a big pupford fan! The training treats are the highest value treat my dog has had, other than actual regular chicken. Love their double hand six foot leash.

All the puppies are beautiful, especially the babies with the blue eyes. I'd be a sucker and pick one of those but for training video purposes, a puppy with a high drive might be a good idea.

Please pick the puppy who seems the most timid and fearful!!! Working through fear reactivity and working on building confidence is SO difficult and it is hard to find resources for help with this.
If a young puppy is truly timid and fearful without an abuse history, that's just the genetics of the dog, you are never going to rehab a dog out of its genetics, best you can do is manage the situation and keep your expectations realistic for the quality of life s/he will have...
@@JunieBJones-tn4yi I believe that is the case with my cattle dog pup. They are very alert dogs anyway. She's been timid and fearful since we brought her home at 8 weeks. Definitely strong genetics. We are managing and desensitizing and playing a lot to decrease stress and anxiety.
@@KellysGarden Yes it's tough with an alert, sensitive dog especially a smart herding breed. Have you considered taking nosework classes? They are great for building confidence in shy dogs.
@Junie B. Jones we haven't done a nose work class but we've been doing nose work games at home. It's super fun! She just graduated from her first "good dog basics" class and we'd like to do more classes!

Wow, it really is beautiful to see. I love your detail, and explanations. You make it look so easy. It does go to show you that this really has to do with OUR knowledge and training. I have seen or heard much of this, but it's easy to forget. You are inspiring. And I love your calm attitude. I know every dog is different, but there is much to use here. I have a ball obsessed dog, so my challenges are slightly different, but I see things I can use. I especially love the reminder of how to teach spin, and shake 🥰. I honestly hate walking my dog. He pulls SO hard, the closer we get to home.. I've resorted to keeping him on the short short leash, and holding him next to me. There is no training method that works once we're headed home. Unless I have a ball in my hand, and then he is a different kind of pain in the ass to walk. Which shows my ignorance, I know.

I understand that looking into the camera helps you connect with your audience; and you certainly don't need me telling you how to make videos. Bree is the expert, not me. I've never made a video, other than an animation for class. From this one viewer's perspective, I'd just like to say that it's okay for Bree to look at Zak when she's talking to him. I enjoy seeing the interactions between the two of you. She could look back and forth between Zak and the camera. That way, Zak would feel like she's really talking to him and we could still see Bree's pretty face.

I highly doubt that this method will result in anything remotely reliable.

Zak please please please consider my pitsky for the new series you have on reality training. He is not aggressive he’s about to be one year old and indoors he’s the best dog you can ever imagine. But outdoors is a different story . I know he can be trained I have worked with him out doors and I know it’s my poor technique. But the biggest challenge is his strength. He can pull a train and out of nowhere. Like I said he’s not aggressive at all toward humans and for the most part likes other dogs. But has had issues with aggression towards other dogs. And it worries me if he were ever to get lose . Pleaseeeee consider! I really need help and so to others with big strong dogs with a lot of kind features.

Watching your videos had helped me make tremendous progress with my Saint Bernard, but I still have a lot of work to do with her. I wish you would do a series with a dog as large and strong as her, because attaching the leash to your belt is not possible with a dog so big. I have to keep her anchored to something that can't move while working on her training, and it's very difficult to get her into a public setting safely.
