In a beautiful village called Perungudi, this Medieval Chola period Temple, Agastheeshwarar, was constructed.
Temple Architecture:
The east-facing Agastheeshwarar has an enchanting Ekatala Vesara vimana structure consisting of a Sanctum Sanctorum followed by an Artha mandapa, Mukhamandapa and Mahamandapa. Koshta has Dakshinamurthy, Arthanareeswarar and Brahma. Shrines of Chandikeswara, Bala Vinayagar, Venkateshwara, Lakshmi Narayana, Murugan with Deivanai and Saneeswara saw in the Praharam.
History:
Since Sundara Chola Inscriptions were found in this Agastheeshwarar, Scholars believe the Agastheeshwarar Temple was constructed in 969 CE during the reign of Sundara Chola. And also, inscriptions call this village Perumudi / Thiruperumudi as per stone inscriptions. The Inscription belongs to Aditya Karikala, Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan, Konerinmai Kondan, Vira Ramanatha deva, Virupanna were found here.
