    That's a lot of personnel within the collapse zone. And by "a lot" I mean more than one. One thing we're trying (starting last summer) is giving our volunteers 100' of 1-3/4" line and a nozzle, and if they get on-site long before the engine then they should deploy that line after doing a 360. Hooking up a pre-deployed line sometimes speeds things up, but sometimes results in an empty line that never gets used. We're still working on this idea, but that concept would have given the guys at 3:20 something productive to do.

      Any firefighter can deploy a cross-lay faster than you could drag around your hose and tie into an empty discharge... guaranteed. That is literally one of the dumbest things Ive ever heard, so much so that I doubt you even volly... and thats saying a lot because I've seen them do some pretty dumb things.
      Further, what is this "quickly" nonsense? The structure and it's contents were a loss before the first engine even dumped it's brakes, and there were no at risk exposures. There was literally no hurry on this job, in fact this is one I would have let the inexperienced guys get some time on.

      @@virgilhilts3924 How can a firefighter deploy a cross-lay when they're not yet on site, VIRGIL? I'm impressed with your sprinting speed if you can haul 100' of line out of its bed and run it out to the fire faster than you can tighten a hose connection that you're standing right next to, but us mere mortals aren't that fast.

      Dummy... YOU are the one who asserted that you can "speed things up" by "pre-deploying" your volley hose.
      I... an actual experienced firefighter of 30+ years, am telling you that any FF can deploy and put into service a cross-lay from that engine faster than you can drag your idiotic idea over to wherever the engine stops, remove the discharge cap, connect your dumb idea, and put it into service. Not to mention the fact that I cross-lay can be selected based on what is needed.
      So much so I'll even make you a bet... Come to my FD and we will test your idea side-by-side ON CAMERA for playback here on YT. My 30+ years worth of grey-hair against you and your dumb idea, we can stage the scenario however YOU want it, in fact, we can set it up just like this video.
      If you and your dumb idea can get water faster on target than me, I'll pay 100% of your travel expenses and give you $1,000 in cash. If I am faster on target I'll drop my bunkers and you kiss my behind on camera, and then donate that $1,000 to a firefighter charity.

    • @JasmineLindros
      @JasmineLindros 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the roof is still intact, it shields the fire from overhead streams. Even if it's not intact, if it's sheet metal it can still deflect an overhead stream and pour all the water off to the side. Hose streams through a doorway or window, however, can reach into the structure under the roof and hit a lot of fire that overhead streams cannot reach. Also, towers usually put out A LOT of water, which can spray debris around the area where the stream impacts. That's not a problem in large fires, but in small fires like this the fire fighters are closer in and it's easier to hit them with debris.

    Seeing some of these comments on here, there's alot keyboard fire fighters..
    My dad was a volunteer Firefighter, and so many Factors come into play into what seems like a long time to get water onto a fire just as it seems like an ambulance takes forever to get to you when you call 911. Yes, there are some departments on video that need refresher courses but for the most part it's these reasons.
    1. If you live in a city, you have paid in station Firefighters at the ready when an alarm comes in; everywhere else has Volunteer Firefighters who are at home, at work, out running errands who have to get to the fire hall from where they're at. Also, they cannot just jump into a firetruck and leave with 1 or 2 people, they have to wait for so many people before they ride to the scene. And at the time if people are working, how many are allowed to leave their jobs to get to the firehouse and on scene.
    2. Time passed until fire noticed and if there were fire detectors/ hooked up to the alarm systems and 911. Alot of places like this do not, as some businesses do not want to pay for a detection system or sprinkler system. If the fire is in a "industrial area" and it's on a weekend or nights or both, chances are that there's noone working at the time and traffic passing by is non existent, if that's the case then that fire has plenty of time to get going and by the time it's able to be seen with smoke and or flames, that structure is well involved. AND... if there is enough Firefighters to get your structure..is it 1 alarm or 5 alarms, 1 company or 5 companies needed and if its volunteer then the distance those companies are from the scene and where the volunteers are at time of the call. If it's a small structure and there's 4 towns called in, that says there wasn't enough volunteers available for the 1 company they had to call the next and the next and so on.
    3. Entry to the property, this place was fenced off and locked. They had to get a truck in there, wasn't getting through the little gate door. All businesses and homes with keypad locked entry should be made to report their unlock codes to 911 center to keep on file in case of a fire or police situation. They finally got the fence open
    4. Acces to water. Are there hydrants on the property and do they work! And working in the weather conditions.
    A. No hydrants on the property or sprinkler system is a huge setback. Now Firefighters have to find hydrants nearby, if not, a "Pumper" has to come in to do the job of a hydrant, with regards to water supply AND pressure.
    B. Weather!! The last week Western NY State has been at below zero Temps. We had a melt then the Temps went below zero, the roads were bad, and salt stops working at a certain temp, therefore getting water out of the hydrants.. and onto the fire.. without turning to snow... or freezing in the hose. You can see the white spots on the parking lot where the water was freezing up. If the hydrants or lines freeze up then you have to find another hydrant or water source.
    5. Contents inside burning structure. . Are there Chemicals, Corrosives, Explosives, Ammunition, Gasoline, Oil especially in an industrial structure. If the info inside not on hand at 911, then they have to get ahold of the owner or manager/supervisor. Firefighters have to know what they're looking at especially in an industrial structure fire. Water on Oil/Gas will spread the fire so they need to use a different extinguishing method.
    So many Factors to fire fighting an industrial structure as opposed to a home, but again if you live in city limits where Firefighters are on station 24/7, the response time much quicker than living outside city limits.

    Dad was a volunteer, rural, fireman until about 20 yrs. ago. There was no internet, cheap shipping or even knowledge of half the volatile substances available for anyone to purchase, in bulk. I cringe at every industrial fire video knowing the possibilities to harm anyone within a mile or more.
    Has anyone thought about a "good faith" list for commercial, industrial or farm properties regarding what may be stored within the building at any time? An "anonymous" list without repercussions attached that The Chief or dispatch can refer to?
    Yes, it sounds idyllic, but a majority of building owners do appreciate the firefighters, have relatives that fight fires or are not responsible when arson is suspected.
    The "worst" occurred for our group when they did a training burn of an old barn without checking what may be in the loft. It was an abandoned, unsafe and smaller barn. Upon lighting, firefighters noticed a peculiar, maybe familiar aroma.
    Local teens had the entire loft stacked with drying marijuana and at the time, our town had NO fast food establishments. (taco bell, doritos, etc....) We still laugh about it.
    Again, the thought of anything explosive or water reactive was not even considered.
    I personally would volunteer to maintain some sort of reference for all first responders. There would have to be a legal clause without releasing any personal info, names or such to the public. Just a rapid statement informing all to beware.
    Yes, alot of manhours and website maintenance, but well worth it.
    Thoughts from an "old school" Wisconsin girl.
    Michele

      @ritirons2726 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Such lists do exist, they’re referred to as MSDS (material safety data sheets) as well as Right To Know forms. They’ve been around for a long time but they typically only apply to a business or commercial establishment where hazardous materials or goods are stored and sold. They also apply to transportation as well.
      These are required to be kept on the property and readily accessible to the fire department.
      If it is a personal property or farm with let’s say a barn as you described, the owner does not need to inform anyone of anything kept in it, past or present. That is that person’s personal and private property so the owner has no obligations to provide any pertinent information unless they choose to do so.
