Great video! I was thinking about doing this, but after watching this tutorial, I realize there's no way in hell I could do it right.
My exact same thoughts lmao
Just watch the video and do the same thing its gonna work buddy
@@ludojeanlouis7034I tried something similar with an original DS, and boy that’s not how it works.
Same here. I can easily remove and change some parts in PS Vita but for new 3ds XL, it is not possible for me to do
@@ludojeanlouis7034 *"But you didn't have to cut me off-"*
I just gotten a pearl white New 3DS XL (pre-owned Japanese model) and thought of replacing the top and bottom face plates, but after watching this dis-assembly and re-assembly video gosh that's like asking me to perform open heart surgery! You must be an engineer or a very gifted tech-savvy dude who can do such complex tasks without batting your eyelids. And with your eyes closed! Truly impressed!
If you do just the plates, you don't have to do any of the hard stuff that was done in this video
Patience, you need patience
Whoever came up with that hinge/ribbon cable combo can burn in hell. Nice video and awesome shell. I was sucessful 1/3 on the 3ds repairs. I have one new 3ds xl that needs a top screen replaced so i was thinking a full shell swap along the way, but seeing all this tiny work makes me sick. Great skills man.
How would you go about it then?
@@kraio-sfu Add a "middle man" board in the top part of the 3DS, that way the top screen's flex cables don't have to be folded and pushed through a thin hole in the bottom part, thus being less likely to be torn. This way, if the flex cable between the motherboard and "middle man" board gets damaged, you just replace the flex cable rather than the whole top screen.
Nintendo actually talked about how it was a lot of R&D to make a hinge that didn't have the same stress failure problem that the DSlite and original 3DS had, which is no suprise
Imagine all the sweatshop workers having to put this together at a rapid rate…
This video took me awhile to complete, hope you can learn from this information. Let me know if you have any questions regarding this repair.
Can you do a switch lite next? As a handheld gamer I’ve been wanting to do a shell swap on my grey switch lite, but have been too afraid to do so.
Question! I noticed when you removed the top screen, there seemed to be an adhesive, how did you get the top screen to stay securely when applying the new shell? Was it still sticky? This is my ONLY question about this amazing video!
@@SOCyak Yes I can do a video on the switch lite soon.
@@zombiehunterjw Yes, there is a thin adhesive film that can be reused and it remains sticky and durable. I reuse this film when repairing oem screen housings but not when using new aftermarket shells. The aftermarket shells fit better without the film. Could be used either way though.
@@TheFixTech I see, Just so we're clear, I'm referring to when you flip the screen back down AFTER you place the new screen protector on it, and rest it into its slot. There's an adhesive there, correct? Just want to be sure! :)
I wanted to come back here and give a big thanks man. I started fixing 3ds xls and doing housing swaps now for a couple weeks thanks to this video. It is extremely detailed and doesn't miss ANYTHING. anytime I need to take one apart, replace a part, or forget how something goes I always come back to just this video and it's all covered as far as a full disassembly and reassembly. Def recommend you to anyone trying to do this type of work. But I've done several teardowns now with no issue and subscribed for sure.
How long did it take you the first time? I'm thinking about replacing mine's, but I need to allocate time to do so, with no distractions.
@@kinglear6150 done mine today, took about 4 hours give or take
Who wants to do mine lol
@@stephentoupin8698 just belive in yourself its not as hard as you think

this guy makes it feel like a lego kit :)
That screwdriver is so satisfying
Such a delicate process which 95% of people won't be able to do!
Such a great tutorial, just wow. This seems to be the only 3ds disassembly tutorial that can be followed with confidence. I did a full housing replacement thanks to this video. It looks easier when you do it :)
The only thing that didn’t work for me was pushing the hinge barrel out while the console was closed for some reason.
I was able to push it out only when the console was open in flat(2 clicks) position. After that I had to adjust the barrel manually 2 clicks back so I’d be able to push it back into the new frame while the console is closed(since it’s impossible to push the barrel back when the console is open because there’s no access).
Very excited to order my new housing next week and start this project! My years of disassembling tech as a kid and putting it back together haphazardly are over thanks to your super informative video 😅
Oh wow I can't believe this is posted so recently, this is exactly the video I was looking for. I need to replace my 3ds shell so bad but there was no good tutorial's to follow, but this was posted at just the right time. Thanks man!
Glad I could help!
@@TheFixTech Where can you get the serial number stickers?
Same here!
Watched it carefully just now. Gonna do this procedure to my unit sometime. Thank you!
Excellent tutorial! I'm going to be performing this on a N3DSXL for a friend soon, and this is immensely helpful. Thank you for giving me the information and confidence I will need to perform this repair!
Your tutorials are very statisfying to watch. Great for beginners, you do your work with a lot of accuracy.
This is in fact the best video for the new 3ds xl
This was extremely satisfying to watch! Thank you for making and sharing this
My pleasure!

@@TheFixTech What is the quality of this shell? Does it have any gaps?
I love that green color you picked out. Thank you for sharing! ♥️
This green was japan exclusive if I recall correctly. Beautiful colour and I wish to own another one of these myself in the future
It came to the U.S. in the rare Super Mario World bundle.
@@TheFixTech didn’t know that. That is pretty cool

thank you so much for posting this!! i am planning to fully replace all the housing on my pink 3ds xl
Really great and satisfying with this relaxing music 🙏🙏🙏 and no talking! I love it and I will try it with my scratched 3ds 👌🏼
Was an oddly calming watch ngl. Really nice camera angles too.
Thanks
@@TheFixTech Good video, very informative! I was wondering if there is a possibility to send my Nintendo in and pay to have the shell replaced
Wow I never thought it could be that difficult, nice job!
This video is perfect!!! Thankyou!! I plan on swapping my system to new housing and this is so helpful, I've been waiting for this upload! Very excited, will update soon.
Use as many original Nintendo parts as possible, some new parts may need to be refined; such as the buttons. The new buttons still had extra pieces of the plastic mold stuck to them so a quick snip took care of that, just keep this in mind. Otherwise these go together very well.

So satisfying, looking forward to reshelling my personal 3DS XL
Fantastic guide
This is amazing!! Thanks for sharing
This is the only video that I see, they separate removing and installing again the 3 ribbon cable on the screen. Great technique. All of the video that I see is recommending removing all of them at once and then they having hard time passing it on the hinge hole.. nice.. :D
Thank you very much for this tutorial, used it to swap a shell as well. Very comprehensive and clear thank you!
Great to hear!
I just wanna say great video, amazing, I still get anxiety no matter how many ribbon cables I pull through the hinge. When you pulled the lcd out I just about gasped out loud 😭
I've been waiting on this thank you so much
Hope you enjoyed it!

Thanks for the video!
Asides from rolling up the ribbon cables looks fairly straight forward.
Great guide, not 100% sure id want to risk my dual ips 3ds considering how clumsy I am 😂 but I've done worst.
This video is so satisfied to watch
This is best detail guide on new 3dsll, thanks
Absolutely amazing. I wanted to change my housing but after watching I think I'll just buy one or get a case instead. Very satisfying to watch👏👏👏👏👏👌
Thanks
Your very welcome
Wow. Brilliant video. Thanks so much for sharing... But, I've watched it and I think i'll stick to my old shell. That's WAAAYY too much work 😲
Thank you for the video 💙
extremely satisfying
This is going to be a real project.
Thank you so much for this video!
Thanks for this, man. Plus in 4K, too.
I will do this in a month or so when the pieces I ordered finally arrive. Ordered a lot of tools too, I don't wanna fuck it up since I just got my New 3DS XL. Wish me luck guys.
Wanted to say thank you for this guide. My 3ds was in dire need of a new shell and d-pad switch and the most I've done was replace the shoulder button switches and I was not prepared for the absolute task this would be. Seriously I struggled with this from 2 in the after noon to 4 in the morning. Following along with you though I made it through.
But dear lord this was a nightmare. First the top shell for the upper screen refused to fit on, then the top screen wouldn't turn on, had to take it apart again to reseat the ribbons, then the touch screen stopped working and had to fiddle with that, the circle stick went on the fritz and I had to swap it with a spare, then screws for the motherboard constantly wanted to cross thread, then a ribbon on the left shoulder buttons snapped, swap that then fight with getting the damn buttons to seat properly for like an hour and a half.
I am clearly not cut out for this, ha.
i feel you there, I snapped the red and black wire for the audio thing hahaha
Hope in a full lime green shell someday
great video!
I attempted to replace the screen on broke NN3dsxl. The origami part wasn't that bad. I Somehow managed to short the daughterboard but those are infamous for going out... I just bought another one that's in good shape. I never owned a 3ds but as a soldering hobbyist, this is my favorite handheld of all times. I play with this more than my Switch.
Water got in my 3ds, thankfully didnt touch the battery. Ur a lifesaver bro
I love this!
Very Cool Video !!!
Thanks for the vid. I was able to get mine together and working. Too bad the case I got was total grrbidge fit-wise. So back in the original shell she went...
I sold mines that my cousin gave me because it had a cracked shell on the corner.. never knew you could change that piece ggs now I gotta buy a whole new 3ds xl in the next week or so
this is a suprisingly straightforward process, now im confidant i can actually do it lol
How’d it go?

Thx my hero
wow.... i replaced the circlepad on my new 3ds xl and that took me about 2.5 hours, I also nearly gave up because how hard it was to reinstall the ribbon cables. this looks crazy hard!!
Wow! Exactly what I was looking for, excellent guide! Thank you so much for this! I have a question though, can you tell us where you got this replacement shell?
What a Chad, thanks for your content.
I didn’t watch it cuz I needed a tutorial I WATCHED IT CUZ IS SO SATISFYING
I would like to reconsider the idea of changing my 3DS housing
I'm impressed

i hope chinese manofacturers make clear shell like dsi or lite
nice video!
The galaxy shell is nice, but I’m tired of it honestly. Can’t wait to work on this, green for the win!
I only have white DS Lite and planning to buy a lime green/black "New" 3DS XL soon.
I have a red 3ds exactly like the one in the video, and I'm replacing the shell with a neon green one
the green one is the one i have but even though its scratched up, i almost dont want to replace it because its so nastalgic
I recently shell swapped a red new 3ds xl into a pikachu yellow shell and it was pure pain. Never doing it again. Good video
Did you encounter any issue with your Pikachu shell? Heard it had alignment and shoulder button issues
Im looking at this video in amazement that this person had the time and patience to do this. I sure don’t!
@@Daymien01Did you change yours? I’m looking for information on the pikachu replacement kit of AliExpress 😭
Ah... this is why I don't see much about 3ds Customization... so much to go through ^^;
I only mildly broke my ds to this video! It was my first time taking something apart/putting something together. I did it so i could paint the plates, so now i have a custom kirby shell :)
Sadly, the top screen is mildly busted, so I'll have to take it to a repair shop, but thats alright.
This video is very well done! In the process of trying to find a new 3ds xl and want to get a new shell housing but not sure where to find one for Canada, would you have any ideas?
Awesome
Doing this was the worst experience I've ever had with any console, but thank you for the tutorial.
The fact that you are also labeling each cable tells you a lot about the quality of these videos
Thanks
I wish I had someone to do this for me I don’t know if I could do it myself
Great video! I was thinking about doing the back ones and you have successfully convinced me to stay the hell away from the front ones!
Out of curiosity, would you be able to do a shell replacement if a 3ds was shipped to you along with the replacement shells? I'd gladly pay for the peace of mind of knowing it's not going to be F'd up.
Hell to the no on trying this myself. I'll be more than happy to have you do it if you're willing. For a fee ofc I'll be happy to pay.
yeah now that I look at it more closely, my shell case isn't that worn down will just replace the outside covers with new ones, thanks for the video I would have damaged my console for sure.
To think that I came here wondering how easy it is to replace the housing. But nope, I guess I can live with few scratches :D I mean it looks like anyone could do it if they're patient enough, but the amount of time needed would be massive. Not to mention it would be a hell to realize, that it won't turn on after the reassembly.
This gave me flashbacks to the difficulty of swapping the shell on my joy cons, never again.
Joy con are way easier than this
Me, as someone who has never modded anything, I think I can take this work. I’m good with small things, the only thing I lack for this kind of work is patience while being delicate, but I think I can take it.
Following this tutorial ofc, otherwise I don’t think I would be able lmao
How did it work out? As a fellow ogre when it comes to delicacy, inquiring minds must know.
@@RitzyBusiness I haven’t been able to cop one :( finding obsolete technology items is a pain in the ass in my country. And when I was able to adquiere one in good condition, I second guessed :(.

Big help, I replaced the back and face plates but couldn't figure out how to get them apart
i’planning to do this repair soon, amazing video fr.
i saw the same kit on internet, just in white.
but i can’t get if both screen lens are included in the kit.
are they?
I love you, attempting to take apart after my poor baby got in the wash. I love you. I love you. I love you.
Can you do a video on how to replace just the top and bottom shells?
Hi I wanted to ask where did you get the new stickers for the serial number from? I really would love to know, as that’s one of the things I was worried about moving from the old one
Nice video man, really it's not a good idea to use a drill on those screws cause it can strip it out real easily cause those kind of screws do that, would be better if you used a regular driver, but the reshell looks sweet, I'm in the process of doing a reshell on a O3DS and there's some complications with ribbon cables on the upper LCD part
Hi. Whats that ribbon cable called at the 10 minute mark? Mine is missing that ribbon cable
تكنولوجيا حديثة جدا جدا جدا 👍❤❤❤❤❤
Awesome Video! Great job! I was thinking about replacing the hinge on my new 3DS XL as the lid of the unit is extremely wobbly, and I've seen newer ones are a lot more "stiff"... Do you think its possible to replace the hinge barrel by just removing the top shell and carefully angling the top section, popping out the barrel & then replacing it, without complete disassembly of the bottom section, or do you think that is a recipe for disaster? ...I know there is the metal hoop for the hinge too, which if i replaced, would require a full disassembly becuase of the cables that are fed through... But, i'm also not entirely sure how much the metal hoop is responsible for the wobble...? Any thoughts?
Amazingly this video popped up on my feed when I was mulling over installing a new shell, thank you for such a detailed installation! The cables certainly seem annoying but it might make a nice rainy day activity. I'm sorry to ask a question like this on an older video, but while the housing seems like decent quality you would still try to recycle as many original parts as possible. Is this purely a preservationist thing or do you think the Nintendo parts just function better overall? And if this was a personal project, how has the housing fared you for this long? Hope you see my comment, even if you don't thanks for the video! I will definitely be using it if I ever attempt this.
These replacement housings have come a long way in terms of quality, they are much better than before. I would recommend reusing as many original Nintendo pieces as possible but it is not necessary, it’s personal preference
@@TheFixTech understood! I'll end up doing the same, just wanted to check.
Thank you. Very good video

How do these aftermarket shells feel compared to the originals? In terms of plastic quality I mean.
