Hey Tom, did you try removing the cloudlifter from the signal chain when testing XLR and USB? Sometimes phantom power (which cloudlifter requires) can cause issues when used in conjunction with USB devices. Just a thought.
Do you have your cloudlifter and Mac mini plugged in a power conditioner? I got one for my studio equipment and it cleaned up my rodecaster pro. Super clean now 👍
Hey Tom, Electrical Engineer here. The high pitched whine you're getting in the Q9U could be from just about anything, but my bet is this: when you have the Q9U plugged into both USB-C on the Mac mini and the Roadcaster pro (which I'm assuming is also connected to the Mac mini via USB) you might be creating a ground loop. Essentially whenever you have electronic devices they need both power and a ground connection, and its common practice to have the grounds from all your devices only connect in one place. This is to ensure that all the ground wires have exactly the same 0V ground voltage. When connecting the Q9U to your Mac via USB AND XLR via the rodecaster you're creating two paths from the microphone to ground: one which is very simple (just a USB cable) and the other via the complex audio equipment found in the rodecaster. This could cause a difference in ground voltage that can create buzzing. If this is the case you might be able to replicate the issue by connecting both the rodecaster and Q9U to your laptop via USB, the rule of thumb then might be to never use both the XLR and USB on the same computer to avoid buzzing. In general though if you're investigating buzzing I'd recommend turning off any power electronics (I'm looking at that sweet Nixie clock on your desk) and checking that all your cables are shielded. Keep up the great videos and bad puns!
THANK YOU! It seems clear to me that this is a ground loop situation, but I didn't know what that actually meant until you explained it clearly. I really appreciate the insight!
@@tombuck I notice Samson provide USB cables with ferrite cores on them to stop interference.... did you try using these cables to reduce/eliminate the noise?
I watched your video over and over again and decided to sell my MV7 and got the Q9U….zero regrets. The q9u sounds more crisp at least for my voice. The mv7 even with the SM7B pop filter, just sounded way too bright and artificial and the side knobs like you mentioned was a pain. Thank you!
I run into these sound artifacts with Macs and dj mixers sometimes. For me, 9/10 times it’s the most subtle ground loop/hum from the wiring, If your computer is on a power conditioner, or even one of those .99 cent ground lift (which removing introduces a whole bunch of other potential issues and safety) you might skirt it. Even if you just try it, you can then rule-out/point blame to the Mac’s ground. Excellent review !
Yo Tom! I was this close to getting an mv7, and I'm really glad I found this review. A bit more to think about before I pull the trigger. Thanks for adding a bonus about the mv7 here, it really helps
Hopefully you find what works best for you. The MV7 does have the Shure Motiv app, which might be a benefit depending on your workflow. The Samson relies purely on whatever software you use for recording/streaming.
Tom, my new mic is arriving today. Thank you for your thorough reviews. I am bugged by something I have to say. The screws you use to tighten the tension in your PSA1 don’t work to tension. They might seem that way, but they’re just small machine screws holding on those decorative black covers. The ones at the mic end hold the mechanism on the end of the arms. Tightening them may pinch the arm ends and help a little, but that depends on wear and tolerances. Mid arm, the one you tightened, pull one of those off and look closely while you move the arm. Nothing will fall out. You will see, it does nothing to provide tension. It’s just a screw holding the decorative cover on. Your desire makes it tighter. I’m afraid someone trying real hard to tighten that, may end up with a puncture wound from opposing hand pressure and a screwdriver slipping. I love your reviews.
Interesting, thanks for the info and congrats on the mic! tightening the screw closest to the connector has always helped me to adjust tension, but it may in fact just be adding/removing friction on the arm...and now that I look at it more closely, that does seem to be the case. 🤔
@@tombuck I have seen others post it as a fix, but it's not really tightening anything that ads friction to the flex joint. It's kind of a head scratcher that it would work any at all. Perhaps the analysis is incomplete. I have used weights from SmallRig to hold down a light mic. And wrapped the parallelogram arms when close together with black velcro cable ties. I experiment with those and they hit a point where they get tight and the sagging stops. I use a Blue stand too. Also thanks to you. 😀 I think I told you before, I like to hear your voice on the mics. The radio voice guys can't hit the part of the mic where my voice resides. They all sound so similar. Your voice showcases a mid to low and I need to hear that. Bandrew and Curtis are mid range and that is helpful too. I have a Podmic after watching your videos and love it. The Q9U is still on the delivery wagon. Thanks as always, Tom. I love your style.
Question though: For the quality of the USB C, is it firm in there, or is there any wiggle? Sorry if I missed you talking about the quality of that port but the fact that the MV7 lacked that was the big drawback for me, and ultimately made me decide not to get that.
I did a little testing on my setup with the USB/XLR and here's what I found. First, the setup: Rodecaster Pro connected by USB-C to my MacBook Pro Q9u connected by USB-C to my MacBook Pro I wasn't able to duplicate the exact sound you had, but I was able to generate noise when connecting the Q9u via USB-C and XLR, but only in a specific scenario. When I used an inline 48v phantom powered mic activator/preamp (in my case, the SImplySound SS-1, which I purchased before they went out of business), I was able to identify interference, and I was able to duplicate this on multiple channels. If I connected the Q9u directly to the RCP without any mic activator, I was not able to create any noticeable increase in interference or noise floor. Not sure if you were using a Cloudlifter (or similar) when making the video, but maybe there's something similar happening on your end??
Thanks for your tests! Were you using the USB cable that came with the Samson? Looking back, I think I was using a different cable, and I noticed the one that came with the mic has a ferrite core on it, probably to help avoid this issue. It was interesting that the Shure didn't have any problems at all though.
@@tombuck To the best of my knowledge, it was the original Q9u cable. I purchased the mic used on eBay, but it does have the ferrite core. I'd also tested an MV7 and DID have some obvious ground loop interference when using the XLR and USB-A connection simultaneously. However, I'm running a MacBook Pro (welcome to dongle town), so it was connected USB-A to a powered Thunderbolt dock, which also provides power to my computer. Probably not a fair comparison with that many pieces of equipment in the mix. As ti think about it, I will probably also need to review whether all of the connected components are connected to the same electrical circuit. I suppose that could also be an issue.
Glad to see a very detailed review on such a steal of a mic. I picked up the Samson Q9u the other day for my desk setup since I repurposed my trusty 10+ yr old Rode Procaster for work only, and I am loving it. You cannot go wrong with $169.99 and the fact that it had USB-C until I decide to get another XLR audio interface, was key to my buying decision. No latency. Sounds as if it were plugged via XLR (for my vocals and ears at least.) I cannot wait to use it more and break it in this weekend on a podcast recording session
It's a really awesome mic. I've been super impressed by it, especially for the price. Hope you keep enjoying yours (and hope the Procaster isn't feeling too left out).
@@tombuck it will not. the Rode Procaster setup is going to be used for my video tutorial workflow for my day job. And the Samson Q9u setup will be my podcast and other personal projects.
Thank you for the Samson Q9U microphone. I'm helping out my sister to get an xlr/usb microphone (podcast reasons) & will tell her about it. Not all microphone should be Shure SM7B or MV7 & I'm cool that Samson is different.
I came here from searching up MV7 and Q9U comparisons and found your Twitter posts from last year. A great video, I've just bought a Q9U based on the video. I'll be using it over USBC exclusively for quite a while before I get a mixer. I've got a fairly deep voice so that mid boost should help it not be so deep and take some muddiness out compared to my current Yeti + Voicemeeter set-up.
Thanks for the kind words! I think you'll like the mic, it's a pretty solid choice 👍 The USB cable that comes with the mic has a ferrite core on it, so that should prevent any sort of electrical interference and keep things sounding awesome.
I have been very pleasantly surprised by the quality of inexpensive Samson microphones. I have a pair of the Samson C02 pencil condenser microphones and they're fantastic.
I honestly think the tone improved after you took the cloud lifter out of the signal chain and just turned up the gain on the rodecaster. This mic sounded really good. Definitely a good value at $199.
Simultaneous USB and XLR would be great for talking in PS4 game chat while capturing gameplay to PC. I can record high quality audio on PC via XLR and the PS4 gets that same or similar audio through USB. Right now I run one of the monitoring lines from my Scarlett Solo to a USB soundcard to the PS4. BUT I get that same ground loop error you're getting. I use a GL eliminator which removes the noise but it also reduces the output significantly. 😩 Thank you for another excellent review.
I personally never would, but since making this and the MV7 video I've had a number of people tell me that they do use both pretty regularly. So I guess it just depends on your individual workflow 🤷🏻♂️
Hey brother I just want to say God bless you for all of your reviews I just ordered the pod tracks P8 and your review has me so excited to try it out as for the tightening knobs on the mic I watched another review and a guy said they have caps that come off where the tightening knobs would be and there are screws there underneath so that you can tighten it. Maybe check that out and see if that's true. It was a review on a q9u so I will have to look at mine and see what he's talking about. Supposedly there are caps that come off where the tightening knobs are supposed to be and you can take a screwdriver and there's a Phillips head screw in there to tighten or loosen which isn't very convenient compared to a tightening knob but it works nonetheless
Hey I’m 90% sure the high pitched wine is because you’re plugging into a USB-C AND your audio interface into the Mac Mini. Try unplugging one or the other. I have the same issue when my piano is hooked up my LiveTrak L8 and via USB (for MIDI) at the same time. Hope this fixes it!
Your high pitched noise is either a ground loop hum, or RF noise. try some ferrite coils on the usb cable, and that should get rid of it if's RF noise.
Thanks for spending the time to test the mic so thoroughly. At 18:00 you played a recording using the USB interface. I couldn’t really tell any difference from the rest of the video when you presumably were using it on an XLR interface. This may be due to TH-cam’s compression? In the real world, is there much if any difference using it on USB vs XLR?
Correct. For the XLR portion, it was running into the original Rodecaster Pro. There's really not much of a quality difference between USB and XLR in this case. XLR has the advantage of not requiring a computer and being easy to add multiple mics together, but as far as single mic audio quality goes, they're pretty even.
@@tombuck Thanks. I want to get a mic for voiceovers for TH-cam videos created in iMovie on a Mac. If there is not much noticeable difference then I think USB may be better for me, will be a lot cheaper and simpler to setup. Currently just using the Voice memo app on the iPhone and Airdropping to the Mac. I tried a Blue Yeti but it was terrible (think it may be faulty it’s so bad).
Newbie here, so all you old heads/day ones don’t judge me. @TomBuck thank you for your reviews. I’m newly looking into this and your video reviews are one of the 2 that I find informative so thank you. Have you done a review on the Q2U? I searched quickly and didn’t find one, so just double checking. Thanks in advance.
Thanks so much for the kind words! Funny story about the Q2u...I was using it for a video I'm currently working on and the USB output completely died on mine. I've never heard of this happening with the mic, but mine is almost brand new and must be defective 🤷🏻♂️ Aside from that I think it's a great sounding mic and an awesome value.
Whoa! Your response time is 🤯! Thanks for that. I was excited to read you were (maybe are still? Since it has the XLR capability as well?) using the mic….until I read that it’s defective!! Bummer. I was really looking forward to a full review, specifically for your head on and offset vocal tests on that mic (I saw you do it in the podmic video I believe) as I haven’t found anyone else who does/talks about that. Either way, glad to hear you think it’s a good mic - despite the defect in the one you got. For what it’s worth, if you do decide to comment on (or continue using) the Q2U, I’ll definitely be tuning into that video. Thanks again.
After watching this video, I have a feeling I'm going to have to try out this microphone and the MV7. I'm not too concerned with the micro-USB as I mainly work with a PC. I would recommend adding an annotation on the MV7 video that takes people here to learn about using an SM7B windscreen as I'm now looking into picking one of those up to deal with the plosives that you had issues with on the MV7.
The SM7B windscreen really does help the MV7 quite a bit. Overall they're both great mics and a lot just comes down to personal preference. I was just so impressed with the Samson that I really couldn't believe how much I liked it.
Great review! I liked how you deep dive the issue on the fly and kept it in the video. XLR and USB at the same time is why I love the Mv7 - XLR directly into C200, and USB into laptop and I use the Shureplus Motiv app to do a basic EQ for livestreams. Just not ready to spend the money on the Rødecaster Pro, may wait for V2 at this point. Also, what are the music tracks you used for this video? They sound like streambeats. Looking for more synth wave style.
It was a nightmare haha! I did not expect an issue to pop up, but then I figured the best thing to do was try and find a conclusion and just put it out there. And the music is Artlist- they added some 80’s style stuff recently 👍
I'll be sure to do that! The NT-USB+ is pretty incredible. I've been using it a lot lately and can't believe how quiet it is. Sound quality-wise I definitely prefer it over the Samson, but it doesn't have the XLR flexibility.
Yet another great review on a mic that is currently my secondary (my SM7B being the primary). I returned my PodMic to get this one and I don't regret it. In the future, could you possibly review upcoming mics via other sources such as a budget audio interface (maybe a Scarlett Solo?) or something to that extent? I think a lot of mics sound different (and incredible) on a $599 RODECaster vs. a $85ish audio interface. Don't get me wrong, the RODECaster is really really nice. But I think there are a considerable amount of mic users who plug their XLR cables into something more budgetary. Again, thanks for the content Tom!
I’ve got a Scarlett that I do use pretty regularly (you can see it in my Rode NT1 video from last week). Depending on the mic, I’ll keep in mind using different interfaces.
Amazing video. I suspect the USB-C and XLR are sharing the same ground point in the casing resulting is the high pitched noise Tom is hearing. Totally a SWAG (military people will know that acronym) but that would do it.
Having multiple copies of both microphones I can say the q9u is a far superior microphone with the brightness turn down. It's been too much more for a long-term pleasant listening experience, where is the sure mv7 what's meth much more is a gaming microphone to cut through music with mid frequencies boosted. If both cost the same and I had to outfit a four-man studio, I would choose the q9u in a heartbeat
Thanks for the info: Nicely orated. OK I took the plunge thanks to your video and bought the Q9U for $184 (hope it's not a copy: Have only a fourtnight to return it). I trusted my ears and from what I heard, including in other videos, the Q9U sounded great. Honestly I can't really hear any difference from the SM7b. I also preferred the neutral mode. I guess the emphasized mode sounded more like Q2U or Shure sm58 for that sake (well not so "Shure" about that but I will get a "Q" later). Questions: 1) Is it impossible to adjust the backing vs the direct monitored sound? I think someone said so somewhere. 2) I am curious to see if plugging the Q9U into my Windows 10 based pc via USB, and using the ASIO4All driver will allow me to choose my piano (connected with yet another USB cable to the pc) as the destination and then the loudspeakers are connected to the piano? I don't have an Audio Interface. The ASIO4all (Steinberg-Yamaha driver since I use Cubase ai 11) allows one to choose other destinations than the microphone itself (because that is the rule (the mic to be both sender and receiver) when using a USB connection to pc. Or was that only valid for the Q2U perhaps? PS: Also see my comment about the Q9X here th-cam.com/video/AF2u7CaV2vM/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=FreePodcastTools (well I go by Ryan in the comments)
I hear you're using 'Scanline Memories' for the intro music. It's very cool. I came across it on a site but haven't licensed it to use for my videos yet as they still suck😂
The first thing I did after starting my channel was get an Artlist subscription (even though I hadn’t made any videos 😁). Sometimes an investment in yourself like that is a great motivator!
Wow, this was intense. Great review as always, I listened through couple dif. headphones and I believe I could really get a grip of the caracter of the sound. Compared to the SM7B I hear a touch of a boost on the mids, might be in the real midrange like 400-500 Hz ( don't have a clue what I'm talkin' about, it's my Mackie mixer's manual I'm reading), no but really, it's a tad less bassy than the Shure, adds some nice clarity to the voice and it's actually a very pleasant mic to listen to. I've got enough mics in my studio but seems like I could recommend it further on. That will come with a link to this video :-)
I'm not sure why you introduced the Rode PodMic in this video because that's an XLR only mic. The nice thing about pro USB mics is that no amplifier is necessary. That makes them much more portable than any XLR only mic (for obvious reasons).
Another great review Tom! Very intriguing issue there with the high pitch noise, but as you say.. quite a niche use case so should be fine for most people.
What do you think of this mic purely from a USB-mic perspective? For mostly XLR use, I guess you have said it that Rode Podmic is the best option. I am contemplating a dynamic USB microphone (XLR is a bonus for the future). I heard that the microphone monitoring jack doesn't allow you to hear your computer audio, which is almost a for-granted feature for a USB mic with a headphone jack. Thanks for the great review btw!!
@@tombuck Thanks! I saw your review of MV7 as well. I like your point on how USB functionality might get limited over time due to software issues. thanks for the great content!
Great review Tom. Just discovered your channel. I will be back for sure. Side question. You link all your gear expect for the headphones? Are they Meze 99’s if so what version and have you reviewed them?
In the video I was using the cable form the MV7, but I did notice that the Q9u cable has a ferrite core attached to it...probably for this exact reason. Lesson learned- use that cable with this mic. 😬
Hey @TomBuck I just bought the Q9U at your recommendation. I love the quality, but it's picking up vibrational noise via my support arm, table, and any direct contact with the microphone. It's hard to relax and not touch anything! QUESTION > What shock mount do you recommend? [Samson does not make any] Have you done a video showing how to detach the current yoke and get it connected to a shock mount?
Hey Dave! This is an interesting question. I haven't used a shock mount with my Q9u, but looking at options, I think the Gator Frameworks GFW-MIC-SM5560 might be a good choice. Seems like a pretty universal fit, and the Gator mic arms I've used in the past have been excellent.
@@tombuck Wow, you've impressed me yet again! I wasn't sure you'd be checking an old post. I don't know how you found that shock-mount, except that you are A-mazing? I just bought it from Sweetwater. I had looked for something that might work on both Amazon and B&H, but came up empty and was desperate enough to come back here. This shockmount is PERFECT as I have a Gator 3000 arm. So, you DA MAN. Thank you.
Well seeing some more reviews I'm not gonna get an USB mic after all. Finally taking the step and buying an Interface ( Motu M2 + SM 57 or similar and EQ it to an SM7b.
Hi Tom and Heather. Just joined your TH-cam channel. Just a little support on your new journey as a self employed. Thank you so much for your awesome content.
Being a condenser mic, it should have less noise rejection and be less robust as far as taking falls, or other physical impacts, than dynamics mics are. But the Samson does sound better than the MV7 on this video, at least to me. Funnily enough, that Samson looks like an SM7B and a Podmic had a child.
Also let me say again, I pray that the Lord blesses you my friend. You seem like such a cool guy and I love listening to your videos and you are absolutely my go-to for reviews on podcast equipment. I'm just starting out and you have so much knowledge and quite honestly you're a delight to listen to and it probably helps that everything I bought, you reviewed and gave it very positive feedback. Had I known about your channel I would have viewed your reviews first and then purchase the equipment LOL but in this case hindsight is 20/22 ... That was just a little joke....... I'm kind of an idiot sorry LOL
Thank you! It's always a fine line to walk. Buying something outright is the easiest way to ensure there's maximum objectivity, but I'd also go broke trying to manage every comparison/review. Fortunately any company I've ever accepted anything from for free has done so with the understanding that it doesn't guarantee a review and they have zero input on the video if there is one. If anything, it makes me like those companies more since they're confident in their products enough to agree to that.
Tom, this is a fantastic review! Thank you for being so thorough. I have one question about you backdrop.. it is fantastic btw, I am curious to know what shade of blue that is, because your lighting creates such nice gradients on camera.. keep up the great work!
Hi Tom, just wanted your opinion, what is your opinion/favorite audio editing software for shartphone, let going off topic slightly!! Thanks for your feedback
Hey tom, great in depth comparison video as always! I just got the mv7 and im quite the novice with with audio equipment. Altho i am thinking of buying an interface to plug the mv7 in, any ideas wich would be a good buy for the mv7?
You really can't go wrong with interfaces, but I'd definitely recommend something that has a decent amount of gain. The Focusrite 2i2 is probably the most popular budget interface to start with, but there are lots of options. The Zoom P4 is a 4 channel recorder/interface with more than enough gain for just about any mic.
That whine is likely some sort of ground loop issue or a poorly shielded line or USB port. I had a similar issue at one point with a mic that after taking it apart, I noticed the circuit board posts touching the inside of the housing. I pull those posts in a little and put shielding between the posts and the housing and that fixed it. What tablet is that that you're using?
Did you notice some latency on this mic compared to others? I've recorded some videos with it and the video and audio got out of sync (because the mic is slower) that I didn't see in other microphones I tried. I can easily adjust it in recording software, but since I'm using it as USB, it's annoying to have to fire up OBS or whatever for a Zoom call just to get the audio and video in sync.
Have you tried using the Samson with a balanced XLR cable. I'm thinking that using such a cable might solve the high pitched hum issue when the mic connected to a desktop computer via XLR and USB simultaneously.
Should I get the shure mv7 or this mic? I’m not too worried about usb c or price, I just want a nice microphone that works on usb for my work computer and xlr for my gaming rig.
You can't go wrong either way. The Shure has more USB functionality if you want to poke around in the app and play with that, but overall, I think I prefer the Samson.
I prefer the MV7 for its sound but the micro USB is unacceptable in 2021. I know many a person would pay £10-20 more for USB C than micro. the connection for micro usb is flimsy in comparison and as an engineer, if you design your specification around a USB C standard, the additional "cost" isn't a thing as it would be set into the design R+D. And like said before, if the overall cost comes to more, then the customers won't mind spending a little more. And even with all its tiny faults, its why the Q9U just takes the crown for better combo mic
I agree, and seeing how many inexpensive products come with USB C, I don't see any real reason why a company like Shure couldn't have included it in a mic like the MV7.
Another new to me microphone. Grrrrrrrreat! Lol. Regarding the high-pitched sound with USB-C and XLR - did you try variable of Rocdecaster connected to MBP and USB-C connected to MBP? I wonder if having BOTH inputs connected to same source is part of issue? Anyway, thanks for the info, as always!
@@tombuck There's so many possible sources for that interference. In the mic. In the RCP. In the m1ni (why didn't apple call it that???). Like you said, probably not a common use case. Curious about your results!
Love your content Tom, I'm new to podcasting & creating video content for real estate and must say thankyou so much for all your helpful and honest information. Your new fan from Australia thankyou so much! keep up the great work!
I know it seems unbelievable but it is possible to hear electricity; especially if there are some problems with the wiring, parts of the circuit are of poor quality and more, it’s as if the house/building is trying to talk to you; you know there’s a problem if you hear the power lines making some noise too (it can happen) unless it’s a (kind of) windy day (power lines can resonate due to the wind lol ) Also nice review; kinda tempting to get a mic like this as I’m one of those people that use both USB & XLR at the same time. The USB would be connected to my gaming PC and XLR to an audio interface on my streaming/production PC...
Hey Tom! You’re review is very thorough and informative as always. I also purchased this mic and use it as my daily driver for podcasting and it is very solid. I still sound a little muddy because I have a relatively deep voice. Are there any settings that could help me get it to be brighter without sounding tinny on the Rodecaster Pro II? Thanks for making me spend a lot of money on gear! 😂😂😂😂.
Thanks so much! I really love the RCP2's presets. You might want to start with the Procaster or SM7B ones and then fine tune things from there. If you haven't yet done so, it might also be worth experimenting with the Mid and Low Cut controls on the back of the Q9u. The Mid switch is especially good at brightening things up a bit.
@@tombuck Yes, I’ve been using the Mid switch since I bought it because of my tone of voice. Not super familiar with how compression and noise gates work. Just have to experiment more to be able to understand them.
This is such a specific problem that I was hesitant to include it, but I figured I'd just report what I found with this setup. I haven't heard anyone else mention anything about this.
I JUST picked up the RE320... and then this came out. Why Mic Universe?? 😳😅 That being said, I do like the USB option for mobile flexibility... (btw, I have free mic envy...I gotta step up my TH-cam game... you inspire me, Tom! 👍😎)
Have you tried this mic out on the blue compass? I run a blue compass, which already sucks with microphone weight. Also wondering what kind of XLR cable you have, I love the blue!
The cable is a brand called Dremake on Amazon. I haven't used this with my Compass yet, but it should be fine (my compass has too much tension if anything).
Tom -- Interesting Q9u "quirk" you heard connecting USB and XLR together. Do you happen to have Rode Connect loaded on your computer? I spent multiple months trying to solve a similar "quirky" problem with my new Dell XPS 15 9500 connected to my Rodecaster Pro. At least two legacy apps stopped working properly (if at all). Finally discovered all problems vanished when I disabled Rode Connect. Since I don't really have any need for Rode Connect anyway, I simply uninstalled it and went merrily on my way. I did share my findings with Rode but have not received any response. Don't know if this will make any difference, but hope it might be helpful.
My Connect app wasn't opened, but I think I did find a semi-answer. I was using a cable form another mic connected to my computer, but the cable that comes with the Q9u has a ferrite core on it. That definitely helps the issue, and is probably smart to use anyway. It's interesting though that other mics don't have this problem.
@@tombuck Glad to hear you're homing in on the problem. What I discovered was that Rode Connect did not have to be opened to cause the problem. It's mere presence on my computer was conflicting with the system service Audiosrv. Disabling Connect solved my problem. Since it was not something I used anyway -- it's was safest for me to simply uninstall it completely.
oooof! I'm trying to decide between the Samson Q9u for $150 and the Shure mv7x for $150.. I need a mic that can work decently in a living room/ kitchen/ dining room in an apartment. I can't really treat it for sound due to lease. Any suggestions? $150 is my budget plus tax.. I have a focusrite scarlet solo audio interface.
Both mics are great and have pretty much the same noise rejection capability. If anything, I think the Shure has a more pleasing sound, but the Samson is great if you think you’ll ever need USB functions.
Thank you very much! I have a playlist that might help piece things together: th-cam.com/play/PLVyN9Er-Mwb41i8azZYRS3lhZZl86yVa7.html I've been fortunate to build up a nice selection of gear, but a lot of it just comes down to practice along with trial and error. 😬
Great vid as always. Question is the mount wobbly? I just bought one today and the yoke thread at the bottom wobbles even when it’s alas tight as I can screw it
If you're planning to use the USB & XLR connections simultaneously, be sure to check out the issue I found specifically when connecting to my M1 Mac Mini.

Hey Tom, did you try removing the cloudlifter from the signal chain when testing XLR and USB? Sometimes phantom power (which cloudlifter requires) can cause issues when used in conjunction with USB devices. Just a thought.
@@robhampton206 great point!
Peter, great clarification, thaks for taking the time. One thing though - there is no such thing as bad pun ;-)
@@tombuck I notice Samson provide USB cables with ferrite cores on them to stop interference.... did you try using these cables to reduce/eliminate the noise?
I thin that was my biggest mistake here- I was using the cord that was already connected (but it did work fine with the Shure).
@@tombuck are you able to test it again and update us with the results here in chat? Thanks!
What a tremendously well crafted review. I can't believe I just found this channel.
Thank you! I really appreciate that🙏
Awesome review Tom! I went from the Samson Q2U to the MV7 recently. Good to see Samson truly stepped it up with the Q9U.
I do really like the MV7- just not the plosives 😬
@@tombuck agreed. I have to use it offset so my breath is going in a different direction for best results.
Bought this today after watching your(and others) review. It was $119 at Sam Ash in Richmond VA. I couldn't believe it. Turned a shopper into a buyer.
That’s a great deal! Hope you enjoy it!
Thought I bought a lemon. Couldn't get sound through my Podcaster. Word to the wise. Check the Q9u mute button.
I watched your video over and over again and decided to sell my MV7 and got the Q9U….zero regrets. The q9u sounds more crisp at least for my voice. The mv7 even with the SM7B pop filter, just sounded way too bright and artificial and the side knobs like you mentioned was a pain. Thank you!
So happy to hear it! Know that the Q9u has been out for a while, I really do think it holds up well and I'm always happy when I see it in use.
Bought one yesterday and so happy with it. It's an upgrade to my samson go mic. The jump in audio quality is super noticeable. 👍
It's a very nice sounding mic! Glad to hear you're enjoying it.
Thanks for the suggestion! It's clearly related to the Mac's power supply, so I'll need to do some more digging.
Ground loop 100% That is why it only happens when both connections are going to the same capture device.
The only thing pulling me away from buying the mv7 is because it doesn't use USB C input...I hate microUSB with a passion..
I think I told you before, I like to hear your voice on the mics.
Nice color correction and color palette behind you. Feels very spacious, clean, friendly, uplifting. :)
Thank you! It's been a work in progress over many years, so the kind words are super encouraging. 🙏
Thanks for this Tom! I was thinking about getting this microphone, and it's nice to see a review on this!
I’ve really been enjoying it!
Question though: For the quality of the USB C, is it firm in there, or is there any wiggle? Sorry if I missed you talking about the quality of that port but the fact that the MV7 lacked that was the big drawback for me, and ultimately made me decide not to get that.
I haven’t noticed any issues- it feels like every other usb c port I’ve used (quite firm). 👍
I did a little testing on my setup with the USB/XLR and here's what I found.
First, the setup:
Rodecaster Pro connected by USB-C to my MacBook Pro
Q9u connected by USB-C to my MacBook Pro
I wasn't able to duplicate the exact sound you had, but I was able to generate noise when connecting the Q9u via USB-C and XLR, but only in a specific scenario.
No latency. Sounds as if it were plugged via XLR (for my vocals and ears at least.)
I cannot wait to use it more and break it in this weekend on a podcast recording session
I have the Q2U and it’s incredible. This seems like a worthy upgrade!
I got the Q2u 2weeks ago too and I am very happy with this mic so far. Hopefully I will look to add the Q9u to my Samson collection
@@ProphetKazBJ that’s awesome! I am updating to the Rode Pod Mic USB today. Waiting the delivery from B&H. So many great mice coming out.
One of the best microphone reviews I ever saw! And you come across as personable.
Thank you! I really appreciate the kind words 🙏
Thank you for the Samson Q9U microphone. I'm helping out my sister to get an xlr/usb microphone (podcast reasons) & will tell her about it. Not all microphone should be Shure SM7B or MV7 & I'm cool that Samson is different.
Hope she enjoys it!
MV7 sounds much less muffled/muddy than the Q9U to my ears
I came here from searching up MV7 and Q9U comparisons and found your Twitter posts from last year. A great video, I've just bought a Q9U based on the video. I'll be using it over USBC exclusively for quite a while before I get a mixer. I've got a fairly deep voice so that mid boost should help it not be so deep and take some muddiness out compared to my current Yeti + Voicemeeter set-up.
Thanks for the kind words! I think you'll like the mic, it's a pretty solid choice 👍
The USB cable that comes with the mic has a ferrite core on it, so that should prevent any sort of electrical interference and keep things sounding awesome.
I’m considering getting the q9u and also have a deep voice what’s your experience been now that you have it?
I have been very pleasantly surprised by the quality of inexpensive Samson microphones. I have a pair of the Samson C02 pencil condenser microphones and they're fantastic.
Me too! Everything I’ve used from them has been pretty great so far.
I bought the PodMic bc of your videos and for the price - you can’t beat it. Also, I bought it on your affiliate link. Great videos man.
I honestly think the tone improved after you took the cloud lifter out of the signal chain and just turned up the gain on the rodecaster. This mic sounded really good. Definitely a good value at $199.
Absolutely worth the price.
Simultaneous USB and XLR would be great for talking in PS4 game chat while capturing gameplay to PC. I can record high quality audio on PC via XLR
and the PS4 gets that same or similar audio through USB.
Right now I run one of the monitoring lines from my Scarlett Solo to a USB soundcard to the PS4. BUT I get that same ground loop error you're getting. I use a GL eliminator which removes the noise but it also reduces the output significantly. 😩
Thank you for another excellent review.
Ahh, that definitely makes sense for using both at the same time. Interesting!
Interesting
I actually did that using an $80 mixer I used my USB to my ps4 and the xlr to the pc. Worked great until I got a goxlr
Tbh man I got addicted to your reviews just because of the audio quality. (Besides that you’re interesting)
Oh wow, thank you! I've been trying to focus on improving audio quality, but am never quite sure if it's where I want it to be 😁
Bringin' it with the dad puns today! Love it!! Thanks Tom. Quality as usual
This is the exact video i was looking for
There is a filter to remove the pitch. It’s not about the mic, it’s static with other devices as well. Great video!
Tom thank you, your channel is amazing!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate the kind words 🙏
I am not sure when you would want to use both XLR/USB at the same time. Great video and truth of issues and types. :)
I personally never would, but since making this and the MV7 video I've had a number of people tell me that they do use both pretty regularly. So I guess it just depends on your individual workflow 🤷🏻♂️
Being on sale for $119 as of today makes this very tempting to get as a 2nd mic.
Definitely a great one to have! Especially at a price like that.
In 1999 at my first radio job the station had SM7b... 22 years later.. Everyone wants it for streaming hahha
It's very funny to see how trendy it's become lately. I'm sure Shure doesn't mind though.
Also I missed a “Shure” pun opportunity. Please forgive me lol.
Always looking out for the little guy’s Audio problems (price, versatility and quality). 👍 Dad puns crazy
Haha thank you!
Your high pitched noise is either a ground loop hum, or RF noise. try some ferrite coils on the usb cable, and that should get rid of it if's RF noise.
I noticed they did include that on the cables that came with the mic, but I was using a different one here. That could very well be an issue 🤔
I hope you can try and check out the new Fifine K688, which is also a dynamic USB/XLR microphone for 75$ and compare it to the Q9U and the MV7.
Plus very in-depth information about products etc loving it
Newbie here, so all you old heads/day ones don’t judge me.
I've never heard of this happening with the mic, but mine is almost brand new and must be defective 🤷🏻♂️
Aside from that I think it's a great sounding mic and an awesome value.
@@tombuck I’d never heard of the Samson brand let alone their mic so I’ll be testing the MV7 first and keeping an eye on the Samson.
And the music is Artlist- they added some 80’s style stuff recently 👍
please include this in the sound comparison test for ur inevitable NT-USB+ review
This guy uses Meze 99s, I trust him with my microphone. The Q9U and the SM7B were virtually indistinguishable. Ordering the Q9U later today
The Mezes are so good! Hope you enjoy your mic!
@@tombuck Thank you!
Tom Buck what name brand headphones are you wearing on this video if I can ask...I like to buy those
These are the Meze 99Neo's. They're really nice. I also have and use the Rode NTH-100's which I love too.
Good job. I love the video, amazing review. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! I really appreciate the kind words and encouragement. 👍
Another awsome video! love the mic reviews
Thanks Josh! Mics are really fun tom;lay with and learn about.
Amazing video. I suspect the USB-C and XLR are sharing the same ground point in the casing resulting is the high pitched noise Tom is hearing. Totally a SWAG (military people will know that acronym) but that would do it.
I spoke with Samson and that’s what they said it might be. It’s a super specific use case for me, but I figured it was worth mentioning.
@@tombuck I feel I just had my nerd card validated. Mahalo Sir Buck of TH-camshire ⚔️
I hope you can do a video comparing this mics with the presonus PD-70
Thanks for the info: Nicely orated. OK I took the plunge thanks to your video and bought the Q9U for $184 (hope it's not a copy: Have only a fourtnight to return it).
I trusted my ears and from what I heard, including in other videos, the Q9U sounded great. Honestly I can't really hear any difference from the SM7b. I also preferred the neutral mode. I guess the emphasized mode sounded more like Q2U or Shure sm58 for that sake (well not so "Shure" about that but I will get a "Q" later).
Questions:
1) Is it impossible to adjust the backing vs the direct monitored sound?
Great video! I love the q9u
I should try that piper pepper stuff with my Italian accent and rolling S and R..
Another great review Tom! Very intriguing issue there with the high pitch noise, but as you say.. quite a niche use case so should be fine for most people.
I think I’ve narrowed it down to a faulty cable, but I’m not 100% sure.
Bought Q9U for $84 on Black Friday, best deal ever
Woah, yeah that's an awesome deal!
For USB only, the sound quality is great, but like you said, it doesn’t allow for many options. The MV7 is a much stronger USB option.
They are Meze 99's! I've always slacked it when it comes to headphones, but this were given to me as a gift last Christmas and I love them.
for me, the LED lights on my keyboard was causing some high pitch, either with USB or XLR, it sounded very similar to the sound on this video.
Love the videos man!
Real quick, where do you get your xlr cables and that right angle adapter you used in this video?
11:31 Yes man thats why im here. AWESOME VIDEO! To be honest you saved me from buying an MV7 and I can get more value for less money. Thanks!!!
So glad to hear it! The Q9u is definitely an underrated mic. 👍
Well seeing some more reviews I'm not gonna get an USB mic after all. Finally taking the step and buying an Interface ( Motu M2 + SM 57 or similar and EQ it to an SM7b.
I waited almost a year for a QU9 and finally cancelled my order and got an RE320.
I had the exact same high pitched noise problem with the samson q2u when plugged in via usb
I think using a USB cable with a little ferrite core helps.
Hi Tom and Heather. Just joined your TH-cam channel. Just a little support on your new journey as a self employed. Thank you so much for your awesome content.
You’re too kind Ramon! Thank you so much for the support!
Thanks to both of you. You’ve given us all so many hours of great teaching and entertainment. My favorite power couple. Keep it up.
Haha, that's exactly what it looks like! Great description!
They are both dynamic mics

you can make a usb cable mod, to separate the energy from the data, so that buzz is eliminated. the blame for the hum is the computer circuitry
Interesting 🤔
And at 0:38 is why I trust your reviews
If anything, it makes me like those companies more since they're confident in their products enough to agree to that.
thank you so much bro i love your content
Glad you enjoy it!
Tom, this is a fantastic review! Thank you for being so thorough. I have one question about you backdrop.. it is fantastic btw, I am curious to know what shade of blue that is, because your lighting creates such nice gradients on camera.. keep up the great work!
Thank you! It's Behr paint from Home Depot. The color is matte Living Stream 👍
@@tombuck thank you Tom! It looks fantastic on camera!
7:33 the SM7B going out of frame looks cool
That whine is likely some sort of ground loop issue or a poorly shielded line or USB port. I had a similar issue at one point with a mic that after taking it apart, I noticed the circuit board posts touching the inside of the housing. I pull those posts in a little and put shielding between the posts and the housing and that fixed it. What tablet is that that you're using?
I think you're exactly right. And I use the 12.9" iPad Pro. 👍
I haven't personally had any latency issues
Oooohhhh- I didn’t try that! I hope it’s not the Rodecaster doing me dirty.
I really appreciate that Jim! I'm happy to know the videos have been helpful! Good luck with your podcasts & videos 👍
Great review!
I know it seems unbelievable but it is possible to hear electricity; especially if there are some problems with the wiring, parts of the circuit are of poor quality and more, it’s as if the house/building is trying to talk to you; you know there’s a problem if you hear the power lines making some noise too (it can happen) unless it’s a (kind of) windy day (power lines can resonate due to the wind lol )
Also nice review; kinda tempting to get a mic like this as I’m one of those people that use both USB & XLR at the same time. The USB would be connected to my gaming PC and XLR to an audio interface on my streaming/production PC...
Thanks for the insight! It might be worth looking into the MV7 since it didn’t have any interference and has more USB functionality.
@@tombuck btw, thanks for the response!
Tom, I know the M1 Macs have had some well known problems with their Thunderbolt ports/controllers, so the problem might be very specific to M1 Macs.
This is such a specific problem that I was hesitant to include it, but I figured I'd just report what I found with this setup. I haven't heard anyone else mention anything about this.
Awesome video 🙌 makes me wonder if I should return the podmic though 😱
Heck no yo!
@@tombuck Ha, ok
I JUST picked up the RE320... and then this came out. Why Mic Universe?? 😳😅 That being said, I do like the USB option for mobile flexibility... (btw, I have free mic envy...I gotta step up my TH-cam game... you inspire me, Tom! 👍😎)
Haha, free stuff is a double edged sword. It’s definitely fun, but I always feel strange about it.
Hey man! I have a question. Could you maybe do a comparison of the Shure MV7 and the Rode Podmic?
Have you tried this mic out on the blue compass? I run a blue compass, which already sucks with microphone weight. Also wondering what kind of XLR cable you have, I love the blue!
The cable is a brand called Dremake on Amazon. I haven't used this with my Compass yet, but it should be fine (my compass has too much tension if anything).
@@tombuck Thank you! Keep up the great work!
It’s nice but it’s no Shure Mv7!
The MV7 really is a great mic!
Speaking of microphones, and peter piper pitched a podcast, when are you going to chat with our favorite swede about his new studio build?
Hopefully soon!
Hi really like your content. Do you have a video explaining how you get the exellent visual effects for your videos?
Thank you very much! I have a playlist that might help piece things together: th-cam.com/play/PLVyN9Er-Mwb41i8azZYRS3lhZZl86yVa7.html
I've been fortunate to build up a nice selection of gear, but a lot of it just comes down to practice along with trial and error. 😬
@@tombuck hi, really appreciate your help and taking time out to help me.
Great vid as always. Question is the mount wobbly? I just bought one today and the yoke thread at the bottom wobbles even when it’s alas tight as I can screw it
Hey David! Mine doesn’t wobble at all once it’s screwed on tight.
@@tombuck screw it man. I’m getting an SM7B
Having used the Samson Q2u for 2 years, I'm down to buy a couple of these.
hopefully you didn't, the q9u is awful
