OP-1 Field - Writing, recording, and thoughts about producing music on it

- Here is a collections of my thoughts and ideas on recording as it relates to the OP-1 Field. I've been so consumed by this little machine and its challenges and limitations. This channel has become a sort of homage to the OP-1 Field because it single handedly pulled me out of a really long creative slump, and catapulted me into producing at a speed and volume I've never experienced before. It really kind of saved me.
It might sound like I know what I'm talking about. Video editing does that for a lot of people. There are some things that have really worked for me though, and I just wanted to share them with the people who have seen my "music" videos and were curious about how I do things. More to come as I wrap my head around what it is that I'm doing here on TH-cam.
It has also been a lot of fun to figure out the video editing aspect to all of this. I've never been a video guy, but I find that filming, editing, and producing music are like sister mediums. I feel like I'm getting better with every video and it keeps pushing me to do more.
Nothing compares to the comments and responses to these though. I'm all about having the conversations. Music is the 2nd biggest joy in my life so reach out if you have a minute, a question or an idea you want to explore. Dork to dork :)
Please take some time to tickle your local subscribe button. The more liking and subscribing, the more videos :)

1st video I’ve seen of yours - thank god you went to the effort of making this because I enjoyed every second and learnt a lot - thank you for being awesome 🙏
Oh wow, I appreciate that very much, thanks! The music ones are fun. The talking ones are a little more difficult, but I think I got it all out on this one 👍🏼
Thanks for watching!
Holy shit, you’re JACK!? I watch your videos with popcorn. You guys are great!
The focus on limitation that you identified early in the video is key. Too often people criticize the OP-1 for its limitations and high price, but that’s the point of the device. If all you wanted was pure, logical functionally for reasonable money the OP-1 should have never been a consideration. Teenage Engineering is a DESIGN company, and well designed items are indeed functional but they are also honest. They do not attempt to do things that they are not supposed to.
I agree. To anyone who says the OP-1 Field is an overpriced toy that makes no sense to buy when compared to other less costly and more functionally friendly pieces of gear, I say not for me. I completely understand the sentiment. But I’ve gotten so much value from its workflow that I could never compare it to anything else.
Please please make more videos on your process. This was so insightful and fun to watch! I would love to see how you record vocals into the op1 and how your program your drums 🙌🏽
I appreciate that, man! I’m trying to organize my thoughts around those things. Working on it! I appreciate the comment. Thanks for watching!!
Mixing during creation is such a great workflow and is by far my preferred method. I think it is a very underrated workflow and I'm glad to see someone else tackle this approach. With the mixing tools available in the OP-1 (and most other hardware grooveboxes), you really can get a great mix (without a DAW or extra processing) if you know what you are doing. I don't really have the skill of seeing the potential in a raw, unprocessed and unmixed sound, so I need to hear how everything fits all together in the moment (including effects). Otherwise, I find it very difficult and uninspiring to build my tracks.
Yeah, man! I need that immediate satisfaction. Mix-as-you-go is the way.
Bro, you ARE The Dude in real life, and that’s like, my opinion man. Seriously though, this is awesome. Exactly what I needed to hear. I'm fascinated by this thing. And I have the mpc live 2 which I love. The op-1 is so seductive though.
Haha, The Dude abides. I"m glad you liked it and thanks for watching! It making the video actually helped me work through some internalized stuff I never defined before. It was a great experience. I'm hooked on the OP-1F. I keep saying it, but I'll say it again. It kind of saved my creativity.
@@NovakTheEnjoyer That’s awesome bro. Making music heals fr. Looking forward to more videos my dude, yours are the best!
So great, Novak! Thanks for sharing your process!
Thanks, Brian! Stoked to share!!
Enjoyed that video so much! You are a truly hidden jam on the subject! love you vibes!
Hey, I appreciate that!! Thanks for taking the time to watch 🙂
I love your thought process, in a sense it makes you better by being more difficult. I love your mind set!!
Very grateful your videos exist.
Awe man, thanks!! So much fun to make 😊
One of the best OP1 videos I’ve seen thus far 💯🙏
Thanks for watching. I appreciate that!
this is BRILLIANT and i dont throw that word around loosely, youre a mad man (compliment) and i love your work
Thank you so much! 🙏🏼
What a fantastic Video! more helpful than 95% of what's out there.
Whoa, that’s awesome!! I’m really glad you found it helpful! More to come.
Thanks for watching!!
You’re awesome! Thanks for this.
Thanks for watching!!
Thanks for your guidence. I just ordered my i
OP1f. These videos will be very helpful!
Congrats! Hope you love it!
as someone who likes the restrictive workflow and approach to this thing, but got "lost in the sauce" this video is exactly what I needed for inspiration! I want to tackle the OP-1 in a different way and you've given that to me. Thank you so much, I'm excited to see what you chose to talk about next!
🥹. As someone who was all out of the inspiration to write music for many years, it gives me the most joy to hear that I inspired someone else’s creativity. I have no idea what the next video will be, but your comment gives me a few ideas. 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼
love this ! 😎
Thanks! Long time coming 🥳
Thanks for sharing your process!😊
Thank you for watching!! 😃
So glad I’m not alone. Glad I found your channel. Op-1 👌
Welcome! 🎉
I think you've convinced me to finally pick up an OP1 Field.. great video man!
I have an affiliate link in the description if you’re getting it new! 😏
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the compliment 🤙🏼
This is some really relevant information; gear videos tend to be just people covering the features over and over or trying to plug their own lacklustre music; I like that you go deep into relevant production information, that’s what the TH-cam music space really needs IMO.
Also, the way you communicate and the music you create shows a great sense of taste, I think it makes you more likeable. When the videos tick the right boxes over and over that’s aesthetic and it makes me really engaged to sing your praise in the comments like that. 👍
I appreciate that very much. So much love 🙏🏼
OMG 😂 - I totally understand your strange personal need for challenging yourself in limiting your options. The beauty is the new concepts and unforseen skills that come to light and wouldn't have if you hadn't. This in my opinion makes it all the more satisfying and like a yeahhhh moment. So cool to find your channel and see that I am not alone. 🙌❤️. I am laughing as I couldn't stop agreeing and nodding. So Good.
Awe man, I’m glad you got to see the video! No pleasure without pain 🤘🏼
That’s genuinely the most interesting shit I’ve seen today kudos bro thanks for that
Thank you! Hopefully I can organize my thoughts a little better on the next one, but this was a lot of fun to make. Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
It’s all about the fuggin’ jam dude! Great video man!
Yeeesssss!!!! 🙏🏼
Don’t even have an OP1 but loved your approach and sense of humor man, subbed for sure
Aaaah!! That’s awesome!!!
Wow! Novak! I think you are SPOT-on about the OP! I´ve not given me the luxury....yes luxury...to buy it yet, but you actually "nailed" it for me! This is what "creative energy"/wondering/"surpriseme".....is all about. Go NEW ways...encounter "problems"...work it through...have FUN in the PROCESS! Geee...Thanx maan!
Thanks for watching! I hope you can get one at some point. They are so my much fun. ✌🏼
you fuckin rock dude.
keep on keepin' on, very much enjoyed this and appreciate hearing your perspectives.
Thank youuuuuuu!!!! 🙏🏼
Just got an OP-1 Field today and your's is the first video I found. Instant sub!
No way!! Congrats man! Hope you love it. It took buying it 3 times for me.
The first one (OG) lasted 2 weeks before I was over it. It wasn’t my thing at the time.
The second one (OG) was a much better experience. I guess I was creatively ready for it.
That one was replaced by the Field.
Have fun!!
@@NovakTheEnjoyer Thanks man.
Just found your channel after getting a OP1 Field and man, your content is THE BEST on TH-cam about this amazing machine. Beside loving your workflow, which I share to a high degree, I think you are hitting the nail in the head about the fundamental existence of the OP1 Field with the ‘no undo’ function and its limitations helping creativity. Thanks for creating this content and keep going! We need more like this ✌🏼
Thanks for the encouraging words! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. It really gave me a new lease on creativity and making music again.
I started on a portastudio as a kid, so when I realized this workflow was basically the same, it brought me back to my childhood, but with all of the knowledge and experience I’ve gained over the years. I love my OP-1F so much! Congrats on getting yours. They are really special.
A video on your parcour as an artist would be dope!!
Thank you for sharing your creative insights and inspiration. Quirky OP-1/F provokes serendipities! ✨👾
Amen to limitations (just please add an Undo!)
You said it, Eldar! That undo button would be soooo nice.
Yes! Thank you for uploading this, I had no idea you could use the Vocoder in that way to get an effect, also i think you mentioned my comment about bouncing tracks heheh. Great Stuff! 🔥
Yes! Your comment showed up in the video! 😆. Still coming around to figuring that out, and trying the method you recommended.
you are killer man! the tactics are everything with the op 1, its like playing a music chess game haha
Thanks for watching!
Yo! Someone recommended I check out your vids and I’m glad they did. This is a super insightful video on the op1 field. Would love to invite you on an episode of Khordmaster keys to discuss more op1 field tips and best practices!
Yoooo!! Thanks for the invite! I have a few irons in the fire at the moment, but I’m down. I’ll reach out as soon as things let up over here. 👏🏼
You’re a badass, man. Good to see ya!
Thanks, dude!!
Here's a thought: Moog Matriarch, and get change back. But still, if I had $$ this little pocket synth would be FUN! Good video, Novak.
Hey, thanks for watching! Being into Modular, the Matriarch would be such a huge addition. I've already got the semi modular set of 3. Perhaps one day I'll bring her home.
Liked and subbed. Great job dude. I’m doing the same kind of stuff with my field. Reminds me of my old fostex analog tape recorder. I’ll be watching more of your stuff! Thanks man
I always think of how amazing it is just having a screen when I think back to those days, lol
Thanks so much for watching!
Hahaha "this was weird" great run down!
Thanks for watching 🤙🏼
honestly, not boring at all. I don't even have an OP-1, & I got a good deal of useful insight from hearing you discuss this stuff. plus... your energy is inspirational. not, like, cult leader inspirational. but, instead, like... healthy, uplifting, constructive.
🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼 thanks for watching!
The man behind the synth 😍
The man behind the shirt 😎
I bet you’re loving the new lift features
It’s the best, but I’m still a little apprehensive. It’s a trade off between mixing and more track space. There’s always a sacrifice, lol!!
Please, keep making these! :)
I’m doing my best! I really appreciate it. I really enjoyed the process of making this one.
@@NovakTheEnjoyer It shows! Everytime I watch someone else's process with the OP-1 I learn a lot. Thanks for doing this.
Hey Novak, I thought of that, a video on the scoring and flow of your videos. I seen you have past experiences in that field and it’s obviously a strength of your channel, plus it’s music related. I would love to see that.
Thanks for the idea!
This is dope. Subscribed.
I see you, homey! 😊
Awesome :) Have really enjoyed a lot of the music you've made with this little beastie, and not just because it's good music "for an OP-1" - just good music! It does harken back to an earlier era of recording, something I was too young to do back then, 4 track portastudios... but then you'd mix those levels coming off the tape as it recorded into your master two track tape. So such luxury as per-track lift and drop then though, even more limitation. Mic placement is super key and people starting out often miss that entirely, so I appreciate your focus on that in this video too. Can't put a mic where it looks right, I mean maybe that's a good start... gotta listen through the headphones to what the mic is picking up, and make your adjustments that way. That's something I thought you might mention and didn't see, use headphones when recording to hear what the mic is picking up. Anyway, really enjoyed this one, thanks :)
Good notice! I think my first mistake is not necessarily knowing who I’m talking to. I kind of assume a certain level of knowledge, I guess considering it’s a $2000 instrument 😆. I’m just kind of excited to get the ideas out, but I appreciate you bringing the headphone thing up. It definitely shines a light on a few considerations I didn’t even think to make when doing this. Every bit counts, so thank you.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it, and the tunes. More to come. Too much fun. 🚀
Great video! Being an OP-1 nerd I always look for this kind of workflow exchanges, so thanks a lot 😂!
One thing about what you said, IIRC, when you bounce a track onto another, you don’t need to match the gain level that was on the track at the time of recording but just bump it up 100%, if you turn it down, you get it quieter… the reason is simple: you silence the track that receives the others, and recording on it “what you hear”, and you want it at 100% gain, if you don’t do that, it will result in something quieter because you’re recording at -x% of the original volume.
This can be also used as a last resort gain correction, painful as you said, but at the end of the day we’re trying to make songs on something that hates us 😅 and loves us.
I’ve subscribed, I am SUPER INTERESTED in the editing video, please do that! I always end up losing my mind in thinking about how I could effectively postproduce a track that has multiple sounds on it, please share your insights!
Thank you!! I will try this. As for the editing video. I think it will only confirm that editing is a mess on the OP1. But if anything, people will be able to see that they’re not crazy. Thanks for watching, and offering a solution to the track bounce 🎉
I do a lot of songwriting on my op1f. I typically mix as I go but find I use out in a ton and layer. Now that shift drop is in the workflow I’ll usually try to balance on the way in, but I still use the out in to apply eq and maybe light glue compression as well as balance and panning. Also a great place to add any volume automation. Then I’ll shift over a bar, drop the recorded track, reset the master chain and work on the next part of the arrangement. I’ll use a light bit of compression on the master sometimes as a mix bus as well.
I’ve also used the out/in feature quite a bit for mixing and panning. This is a great point, thanks for bringing it up! It’s tricky, but it just takes a little practice to get the feel for what gets affected, and how.
Cheers!
You’re an awesome person ;)
Oh man, that’s really sweet, thanks!
I like your vibe and the subjects you discuss on your channel, good new sub! (Good music discussions like these are rare for some reason…)
And I’m curious, what is your public speaking background?? You’re really captivating!
Man… with these videos you’re really taking the #1 spot for channels with Op-1 Field content; I’m all for it!
I gotta say, I’d also be interested to hear you talk about music in general. (If you run out of Op-1 juice)
Man, I really appreciate all of the kind words 🙏🏼.
No real experience with public speaking other than just being in bands in my youth. I’ve recently had a “fuck it” life moment, and started directing my creativity toward TH-cam and that’s what you’re seeing. I love it because between music and video, I find that I can express everything I feel. I’m new to the camera in every aspect, and I love learning new things, so the video part of this journey is really exciting to me.
I really appreciate your feedback. Thanks for watching ✌🏼😎
I realise this isn’t the point of the video but I really like your glasses
Thanks! They’re new 🙂
👌
The vocoder tip….man I wish I would’ve thought of that lol, I’ve been soloing a track and putting the effect on the master and bouncing down to a new track. Anyway, great insights!
Yes!! Go forth and make magic!
Great vid man. I reaaalllly want the OP1 field but can't yet justify the expense. It will probably inevitably happen in the future tho.
Have you tried one yet??
I've had a quick shot in my local synth store but not had the chance to run it through my fx rack - which is what I'd be most excited to try. Stereo OP1 + stereo modular!
@@TheUnperson Ally, I’ve been waiting for you to put it through your fx rack for a year now, man. The world is waiting. Your OP-1 videos are the reason why I have the Field.
Hey recent fan, just subscribed, great stuff - and I TOTALLY know what you mean. Those CLICKS that randomly appear during editing/cutting that you have to master to tame.... just brutal. I have a few intensive projects involving sampling and entirely finalized in the op1 environment for a live-play-stereo album cut/track on my channel. Keep up the good work, Im not looking for any promotion fellow op1-er who understands the pain of this type of recording/editing task! Bouncing is your friend, but a cruel mistress....and no undo takes mental kung-Fu! I also like you how integrate the Moog Studio, Im also heavy into that, and mother-32 is most of my bass haha,
Nothing beats a Moog! Thanks for watching!!
Very interesting and unique insight into an incredible creativity driven device. Awesome job bud!
Thank you for spending the time! It’s a magical instrument and has given me so much. 🤙🏼
This is a great video, subscribed! Are you in SoCal by chance? Love that you're using real instruments as well as some outboard synths. Starting to do the same thing myself. You should offer paid tutorials like Son Wu!
That’s a great idea! I’ve been asked before and now that you mention it, I have been considering it lately. It’s hard to not just hop on the phone with everyone all the time just because it’s fun, and totally neglect everything else in my life.
I am in socal, you? Just saw that you’re in SD
Thank the algorithm...FINALLY found someone who sees and uses it as I do! AND refers to that process as being dumb :)
Awe dude, stoked!! Yeah…. Such a pain in the ass, but it does something for me that makes me keep doing it again and again. Thanks for watching 😃👍🏼
@@NovakTheEnjoyer have watched through all your vids and will be seeking out your stuff for sure, very much attuned to your tastes and thoughts. Thanks for taking the time to make and share it all
Hi Novak;
I love your music and your videos which as a recent OP-1 Field owner I am watching with great interest. I wanted to ask you how you use the OP-1 Mixer when recording your guitar or synths. At what levels do you keep the tracks in the Mixer when recording? All at 99%, 80% or less?
I hope I explained myself correctly.
Thank you
Alessandro, thank you for watching! I typically have my mixer maxed out at 99 across the board when I start. I usually don't mess with that until I get about 1/3 of the way through the jam when I feel like I have enough material in there. First I like to play with the compressor to see what it does before I start turning things down, but I eventually find a balance between all 4. That is to say that if every channel is at 99, and one sounds too quiet, then I turn the other 3 down to find the sweet spot. There is no specific reason why I do this, lol. Where do you like to set it?
Now that you mention it, it's probably a really good idea to start at 60 across all the channels to have some head room. 60 is where I usually start to hear a big shift in volume. I'm just not sure about how that affects the compressors performance. I'll try this on the next one. Thanks for the comment!!
I've been able to use the Zoom AM7 MS USB-C mic directly into the USB-C input. Gives you more gain stage and wider sound, but it might not be everyone's taste.
I love this. I just got the CM-15 and I have some thoughts about the difference between it and the onboard mic. I think there are definitely different tools for the job depending on what you’re trying to do. Would love to try the Zoom. It might be time for me to start experimenting because I do rely heavily on mic recording.
The onboard mic has been such a fun challenge to master. I like the idea of carrying less and staying as minimal as I can, so discovering different ways to make it do what I want has payed off huge.
I appreciate the comment, and thanks for watching! ✌🏼
@@NovakTheEnjoyer you know, hooking up a XLR dynamic mic straight into the minijack input is also doable 🙂

Your editing style is sick, and this video got you a new subscriber! Checking out the rest of your channel asap.
I appreciate that very much 🙏🏼. Enjoy the music!!
Any tips on making the filter?
Some things have to stay close to the chest, but a good start would be going to Novaktheenjoyer.com 😉
How much recording time is there on the OP-1 F? If you record a guitar performance down to the OP-1 tape.
The tapes are all 6 minutes long.
Q: I got an OP-1 the other day - no quantising(!?) , and no undo for recording!? Ugh. If that's "good" because 'limitations inspire creativity', then where do you draw the line? Why not just write acoustic guitars based songs, sing along, and record the entire (one-take) into your phone?
I hear you, dude. The only reason why it’s justified for me is the application of sampling and synth stuff. Drums*
The editing sucks for songwriting. It’s made for loops and beats, but it has made me take a more “splash paint on the wall” approach. Way different than how I work in a DAW. It’s all so immediate and all in one place.
As for quantizing, you have sequencers for that to play both synths and samples with. IMO, the lack of quantization allows for the human element that is so important in the music I love. That’s style baby.
I hope you have fun with your OP1 despite the drawbacks! It took be buying it twice to actually commit. Returned it the first time because I didn’t get it. This time it set me free.
wow wat a weird thing. never seen that before
How do you feel about the field choir?
I wish I could spend some time with it. I think they sound great and there’s definitely potential there for me and what I like to do. I hope to enjoy their company at some point in the future. Have you messed with them at all?
@@NovakTheEnjoyer no, but i have most of te other gadgets. Including a field and tx6. At the moment id only go for the field mic but i have to investigate its curve response. Also im looking into heat + fx

lol! You know, someone left a comment on one of my videos talking about how “chomp can do all the OP-1 does for much less $”. Of course, this was before it was actually released. I wonder how that person feels about it now. They’re definitely not commenting on it.
I’m not dogging the Chompi, but I’m also not comparing a go-cart to a Tesla. (Definitely not comparing a Tesla with an OP-1 Field either 😄)

Glad to see someone else out there got this insanely overpriced device to record guitar and vocals and wrap it in crazy shit :D You should do a live stream of the process someday.
😆
Yeah, this thing is definitely pricey for what it is.
I’ll look into the live stream thing. Never thought about it, but maybe it’s time…. Thanks for watching!
@6:24 instasubscribed 😂😂😂
Haha, it’s a fact Jack
please add an undo button, but don't = yeeez
dude you are a very funny guy! what i didnt know was the vocoder thing. Basically you are not able to record with an effect except vocoder which i (dumpfkcer) was not aware of. And the m1 and m2 effect when pressing it and at the same time recording something via microphone does not help at all it will always record without any effect.
is there any possiblity to record with a high pass filter and reverb at the same time via the microphone (i tried with m1 button for high pass and in the vocoder i had reverb) but it recorded only the reverb on the vocoder "slot" whatever
but i could record it on album and then on tape but that isnt very pleasant
anyways i am awaiting your videos and left a sub ! cool man
Thanks for watching! Yeah, I haven’t been able to find a way to record with two onboard effects happening simultaneously. The only thing that I can think of is bouncing, or re-sampling what you’ve recorded. In other words, record your voice with the Reverb, and then re-sample it with a master effect like the Nitro filter turned on.
The only other option would be to run your vocals through a pedal before going into the OP-1.
thanks dude keep it up
