  • ‪@teenageengineering‬ OP-1 Field jam with no post processing, and a "breakdown" of how I made it. I hope that it can at least inspire someone to make something of their own. I don't know which was more fun; making the song, or filming and editing the whole thing.
The ‪@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC‬ Morphagene is the star of the show. I explain how I used it and more after the song is done. The modular is clocked by ‪@MakingSoundMachines‬ Stolperbeats. These songs never get far without seeing the business side of my ‪@martinguitar‬ 000-15sm. All of the guitar and vocal stuff was recorded through the Teenage Engineering CM-15 Condenser Microphone.
I also answer some questions about how I film this stuff and some equipment I use. Film (cameras) is a new thing for me, but I'm really excited about it. It's a lot like making music. At least the software makes me feel like I'm producing a song. I shot everything on a ‪@Sony‬ ZV-E10
    Hope you enjoy it!

The electro/acoustic thing is my favorite part about creating on the OP1. Everything is so readily available. You don’t have to go far for sounds and it’s really easy to test things and get creative really fast.
It feels like that never ending (impossible) pursuit of having your studio all hooked up so you can just turn it on and go.

My guy, you're killing it. Beautiful, entrancing song, great cinematography shots to go along with it, and your overall vibe is rad.
Played guitar as a kid, fell off for years and I'm only now restarting the journey with deep dives into music theory and music production. Specifically with my OP-1F.
It's videos like yours that are massively inspiring. For whatever reason I'm almost certainly making my life harder by foregoing a DAW but I know the OP-1 is good enough to produce quality sound on its own. So i'm attempting to climb the mountain with just the OP-1 and my degraded guitar skills.
Anyways. All of that to say, cheers to a creative life and keep up the great work. You're definitely inspiring people like me.

I’m so stoked to hear that you’re doing it again. As far as skills, I’m sure you’re better than you think, but the beauty of the OP1 is that it grows with you. There are so many ways to use it.

Novak you lunatic! First off, great song! Second: thanks for the making-of-part. Coming from bass-guitar I just discovered the world of synthesizers and up until now, I enjoy it a lot! Had the OP-1 (the old one) up until now and saw the moog sound studio in one of your former songs and was like "what in the ... is this thing?!". Looked into it and orded a used one right away. So stoked!
So now I am trying to record everything into my OP-1 and it is just... fun. I do not take it to seriously and concentrate on just only having fun with it. So thanks again for showing off other modules, being positive and sharing your creative spirit over the net.
And uh - I got to ask one favor: dont ever to a "My Top 10 Modules of 2023" or "Dont make these mistakes!" click-bait video. We already got lots of it. I enjoy your content a lot and look forward to your next video. Have a nice day! See you soon!

If I ever do "comments of 2024", lol, this one may take the top spot. These thumbnails already have me feeling a little icky, but I have to admit that it's kind of fun, actually. I hear you though. I don't know if there's a future in this channel or not, but it feels really good right now to be able to make these videos and give my music this shot of adrenaline with the addition of video. I'm a product of the MTV era, so it feels like I have my own music videos, lol. They're really scratching the itch :)
Congratulations on the Moog!! Which one did you get? They are little creation stations, each one as good as the next. Careful with modular, though. They call it a money pit and they aren't joking.
I'm really happy to hear that you're writing on the OP-1, and just in general! The more you write, the better it gets, and the more music WE get if you decide to release it. The only way I am able to put these things out is to not be too serious about it. Only do what feels good and natural. If I were to take these things too seriously, I'm afraid I would never allow any of these songs OR videos to see the light of day. Crank out those jams!!
Thanks so much for watching :)

@@NovakTheEnjoyer I got the Subharmonicon first. It kind of appealed to me, since twisting knobs and dialing in weird polyrythms is kind of more a "mathematical approach" to music while still being explorative (I am working as a programmer). And making happy little acidents feels so rewarding! Also: I am by no means able to play on a keyboard as of now. So the SubH seemed a good fit. I hooked up the EP-133 / KO 2 to it as a drum box, which seem to work just fine. Next step: buying a reverb pedal. I could just use a plugin on my computer, but being a programmer, I already spend half of my day in front of a monitor, so a pedal it is. Do you have any recommendations for a reverb?
On the topic of MTV and music videos - I liked your approach of creating your videos a lot. It is so much more fun to watch than the good old "downwards shot on a lot of equipment and pressing play"-kind of videos that are all over youtube. Felt really refreshing to me.
And thanks for the advice on releasing music! I am still practicing on getting all that gear to work together and figuring out harmonics and stuff... but I set a goal for february: record a small loop/track/whatever and share it somewhere. It forces me to get things done and stop the "exploring"-kind of phase in creating music.
So again: thanks a bunch for you content. I will keep an eye out for more! Have a nice day!

AHHHH sooo good! Sounds like Black Moth Super Rainbow and Thom Yorke had a sound baby but even better! Definitely appreciate the advice to break whatever rules you feel like, which is kinda why I like the Field so much. Also wanted to say the merge feature has altered my process quite a bit too, now I feel like I HAVE to use it to create infinite layers, instead of making 4 track melodies and calling it a day. Anyway, I your videos are getting so good, I'm always shocked when I see your subscriber count bc you make the best OP-1 content on this platform by a loooongshot. Keep Rockin Duder! 💗🔥

    • @NovakTheEnjoyer
      @NovakTheEnjoyer  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I love these comparison comments because it always opens me up to new music, thank you!!
The Merge/Drop feature is such a great tool, and probably the best update they're ever done to the Field. Part of the joy for me about writing on the OP-1 is the limitation of simplicity. The I've spend years in the never ending depths of a DAW. There is something to be said, especially when you listen to the greats, about keeping it simple and light.
Something I heard a long time ago from a very good friend was that "A good song is a good song". Doesn't matter whether it's recorded in DAW with an orchestra, or played on a trashcan lid. Think Beethoven's 5th, or Blackbird by The Beatles. I try to get my rocks off in the simplest way possible before I layer up.
Take this song for example. I found the sequence, immediately paired it with a bass line on the Mother-32, and woke up out of a trance after 30 minutes of vibing on it over and over again. That's when I knew I couldn't let it go and had to push it into existence. Anyway...

DUUUUUDE this song slaaaps brother holy shit. The vibes the progression the change up the journey it takes all of it so dope man. Really dig the cinematic stuff too. Pairs really beautifully with it all and when I'm making music I always like to think a good song has a music video already - it's telling a story... you just need to go out and film it/make it. With this I think you nailed it. An expression I hold dear is "Don't be afraid of zero but also find YOUR 100%" and it popped into my head about the bad advice you got. Man, thanks so much for taking the time to watch and leave a note! I feel like the songs are stories as well. I do always feel like I’m under delivering on the dynamic of the songs, but then I think that we really are our own worst critics. I used to get stuck with that thought and then just wouldn’t finish the project. Not my philosophy is to just hammer and get it out.

@@NovakTheEnjoyer Nooo, those thoughts don't help anyone. We are totally our own worst critics. Even though it stings sometimes, I agreed with the part where you talk about making the best stuff either from accidents or needing to redo something. Sometimes if I'm stuck on a thought like that and its not helping I save the stubs and wipe the track. Try to recreate it with a better sense of direction. Sometimes it hits, sometimes I discover something unexpected. I like the hammering it out philosophy too though, and I think it works well for the OP1F workflow. I think no matter how we might see our own work it could inspire someone else in ways we can't imagine or at least have fun and experiment. So far I'm still ok with unfinished projects though. I think it's cool to park them and revisit later. Sometimes they just need to marinate for a bit before you can cook. Jeez! Just saw the comment about Black Moth (and Thom Yorke). Yeah! They are great. I’ve discovered them from their collab with The Octopus Project on the album The House of Apples and Eyeballs. That was years ago. Enjoy!

Great song, vibe and video. You set high standards for other OP1 user like me 😅

Awe man, I appreciate that, thanks so much for watching! Don't let the lights and glamour fool you, lol. There are only 4 tracks on this thing. Keeping it simple goes a really long way.

wowwww man it sounds so good. what was the sample/synth preset for the main endless sequencer melody? also what were your final master gain/drive/release settings if you dont mind my asking. this has some mehliana vibes (duo with brad mehldau and drummer mark guilanna) super sick!

Hey! I honestly don’t remember. I’m pretty sure I dialed it up on the OP1F and it wasn’t a sample. Glad you dig it!

1:51 How did you do that effect? That was sick! Don’t know if you remember me commenting, but your one video was the reason I got the op-1 field, and it’s now my favorite piece of gear… Now with this video you’ve inspired me to put my fuji x-t4 to use again!

I do remember! There is quite a bit going on there, but I tried to break everything down after the song finishes. I used the Morphagene by Makenoise and I think I just took the drums out of the main loop, put it through the Morphagene by Makenoise, and then dropped a new drum beat over it.

@@NovakTheEnjoyer I appreciate it brother! What I was asking, and I should have been more specific, the video editing effect haha. That looked amazing.
