  • It's so easy to collect unfinished works. In this video I talk about 5 things I think about when writing songs on the OP-1 Field, particularly from the viewpoint of a beginner, or aspiring songwriter that never finishes their ideas. For those that stick around, I offer something free for hanging out. Thanks for watching!
    I hope some of this helps your songwriting process. I'd love to hear your ideas as well.
    Enjoy!

      Welcome to the grind. It so hard to stick these ideas out to the end. Especially if you've done it before and you know what it takes. The thought is so daunting, and I find myself thinking about finishing a certain idea and getting overwhelmed by the thought because I know it takes so much time and energy.
      I talk a little about the small commitments in the video but I didn't mention the really small ones; Do I go an extra beat in this section, or should I do that part with a piano instead, or should I fade this instrument out or cut it clean. It's a big lift. I think a huge part of procrastination is that we don't feel completion very often so we forget what it feels like to come out the other side with something we're proud of. It's always a beautiful feeling and worth the effort. You almost have to bank on faith to convince yourself to even start the process, let alone finish it.
      Thank you for watching and leaving a comment! I really appreciate you spending your time on me and hope you not only feel comfortable asking me anything, but sharing your moves as well.

    I love the op-1 f so much. and your approach feels so much like my own. is it me or is the op-1 more like an acoustic instrument than any other groovebox/ recorder/ synth? so yeah, thank you. your content has truly been inspirational to me.

      @@boogerfoot thanks man, it means a lot. Yeah I love this thing. It really does feel more analog than most electronic instruments.
      The other day I needed to a sound for a project I’m working on in a DAW. It seems like everytime I try to use the midi functions of my midi keyboard to affect a soft synth in Logic, I have to figure out the same thing to set it up over and over again. I just turn the OP1 on and go. Everything in one place like an acoustic guitar, and you don’t even have to tune it! lol.

    2 things i'd like to say :
    - it's one thing to film things in a nice way, but what ultimately does it is the editing, and your editing is great, it makes what could be a mess very understandable
    - i used to play guitar so much that i could come up with one (or more) idea per day, but i would never turn those into songs, because for me they wouldn't be worth it. once every few months i get an idea that i immediately know is going to be my next song. it's interesting to compare processes and intent !

    • @NovakTheEnjoyer
      @NovakTheEnjoyer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Man, thanks for the huge compliment! I've always played guitar as well and I know the feeling. It's inevitable that for every hundred scratch ideas, one might be a winner. I love it when people on Reddit go into a forum and say "I just got Logic and a midi controller. How long does it take to sound professional". It's a life long struggle, lol.

    The truth is often bitter in the beginning, but always sweet in the end. Much like many a songwriting effort. I was really hoping for the blue pill (matrix, not the other blue pill) answer to how you do it, Novak. Always thankful to you for being so real. Songwriting can be tough, especially when it comes to production and sound design. Getting caught up in the tinkering stage and not following through to flesh out the jam…. Ughh,,,, how many ideas that were so exciting in their infancy now live in those folders, “never to be heard again”, and gathering dust. I was reading Rick Rubin’s book, and he talks about ideas having their time to be cultivated, and how they will be tapped by somebody else if we don’t persevere. There’s a comfort in that, knowing that a great idea may belong to all, but there’s an overwhelming feeling lurking not far beneath that one, whispering, “you’re too late….” 😂 Oh well, good thing the jam offers that immaculate dose of dopamine. Here’s looking forward to a finished one before this One’s finished! 🎉
    Kudos on another great video/music piece, my bro. Cheers!

    • @NovakTheEnjoyer
      @NovakTheEnjoyer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Tim! Yeah, I don't know if there's a poetic meaning to this being a life long struggle other than to say nothing good in life comes easy. I'll try to get a little more technical in future videos in hopes that I can shed light on practical solutions. I get a little heady at times. It has to be said though that the process has never been, and will never be easy as far as I know. That quick hit of the jam is real too though... That's probably why there are always 20 jams to 1, lol.

    Love the practical advice in this vid! Random question - in the first part of the video, are you recording the OP1’s processed signal back into the tape? If so, how are you doing that without getting a feedback loop? Is it some sort of black magic from the TX-6? I’ve been struggling with that flow for years! Lol.

    • @NovakTheEnjoyer
      @NovakTheEnjoyer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely not. I am processing the whole track through the @hologram Chroma Console. I'm in love with it. I'm using it with the TX-6 as an effects send and recording into a pen drive on the TX-6. It's really dumb actually, but I'm trying to figure out the easiest way to remain DAWLESS, but TE makes it impossible when using outside effects.
      I heard Chompi and Chase Bliss just came out with a new firmware update for the Chompi where you can use go out from it, into an effects pedal, and back into Chompi without a feedback loop. I assume that since the OP1F can record with the metronome going without actually printing the metronome to the track that there has to be a way for the OP1F to do the same. Meaning the metronome lives on another plane of existence from the music, so why can't effects pedals do the same?
      I'm not an engineer, but I wish it was something they could do. It would add such an amazing layer to the experience. Thanks for the question, and thanks for taking the time to watch!

    • @nickcasares
      @nickcasares 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh man, you and I are on the same page. I’ve tried to figure out a DAWless OP1 workflow with external effects for years. I’ve reasoned about the issue and tried a bunch of routing configurations. I’ve come to the conclusion that it isn’t physically possible without introducing a second input or output. If the USB and 1/8” IO could be separately configured then I think we’d have a usable solution. It would still require something like the TX7 to route USB audio, but it might be simple enough to satisfy the DAWless itch. We can dream! Thanks for the response and keep making awesome content!

    • @NovakTheEnjoyer

      Oh man, I LOVE this question!!!
      I have tried to finish things from the past the way I meant for them to be. I always thought that since my skills have gotten better, the songs will end up being better. It wasn't until the first time I took the riff of an old song, or the "Heart" of something I did in the past and jammed with it the way I would in the present moment, with the influences of my current whims.
      My influences have shifted drastically throughout my life. I think it's the same for most people. (The more influences the better!). What I realized is that my skills and intuition get better in the same vein as the influences at the time just through osmosis. That is to say, the past is the past and we can never get back to it. Make new music out of old riffs.
      Modular helped me shed my overprotective nature over things I've written in the past. The "Throw-away" nature of a patch translated directly to the idea of using my past jams as kindling for new fires. Otherwise, they'll sit there for another 10 years. Use the ideas to move forward!
      Thank you so much for asking this. I haven't really thought about it too much, but now that I am, it's exciting to dig through the file cabinet :)
