    • @matthewradabaugh1635
      @matthewradabaugh1635 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Not true. A deck doesn’t need to be well rounded if it is so dominant in one area that its faults don’t matter.
For example, the extreme would be a deck winning 100% of the time on the play and 20% on the draw (disregarding player skill, of course). This deck would have a 60% base winrate, which is astronomical. In fact, most decks favor the coinflip for this reason, as it provides them a base to work off of when it comes to play patterns and fine tuning.

I remember playing against it, and the issue was that the entire deck provided value, even if you answered it immediately.
As an example, you really wanted to kill the Servant of the conduit so they couldn't use the Mana, but then they are still up two energy. (Which is also 2/3 of a thopter, a +1/+1 counter or 2 damage to a creature).

I would've loged if two players with a more equal skill level would've played that final, maybe Andrea vs Thoralf.

We expected this series to bomb, so we did not take good care of our notes. They are only 5 rounds of Swiss though, so the data is not very representative. If we gave the tournament another spin, we'd likely get an entirely different top 8

@CardmarketMagic that's a fair assessment. Thanks for the response. I'd say 70k out of 100k subs is pretty decent traction. Maybe you can do it again in another couple years. Was cool seeing psychatog again. I remember getting bullied by it when I was a baby at magic.

My mono white Eldrazi deck would beat most of these decks[ If not all, it was undefeated while it was legal, there wasn't any major tournaments in my city so couldnt have tried it there] It was also built to beat mana screw and flood. with ever flowing chalice, and playing spells that use mana each turn till 11 for Ulamog/Kozilek,Marshals anthem, wurmcoil,Conquers pledge-kicked,True conviction.

I’m surprised Selden’s Rec-Sur or Nuijten’s Slide decks didn’t make top 8. Nuijten’s deck was a meta call, but damn if it isn’t impressive and Selden’s deck was absolutely broken with answers to anything in the toolbox. I’m making my call before I watch this video: Temur Energy has so much value and everything is a two-for-one. I want to give the edge to the value engine over the aggressive fire engine which was Hazored. Can’t wait to see if I’m right.

Over this series, I was reminded of the difference between "best deck" and "winning deck".
It was weird to look through the Worlds deck lists and see stuff like:
    - Astral Slide won the year Affinity was a thing
    - The Standard versions of Tinker and Rec-Sur were *terrible*
    - Caw-Blade was banned before Worlds 2011, so it never got a shot at being in the quest for the best
    - Worlds 2012 didn't feature Standard, and was instead Draft and Modern. 2013 was also Modern in the finals

I wish this was called the best World Champion Standard Deck and not just the Best Std deck. I will use a era that I was involved in playing heavily. FIrst the best deck didnt always win worlds. In 2004 Aeo Paquette lost in the finals to Julien Nuijten with a Standard record overall of 8-1 while Julian's overall std record was 7-2. That year I dont think anyone thought that astral slide was the best deck, affinity or ironworks was. Second bans would knock many decks that would have just crushed worlds off. Skullclamp in affinity would have made it impossible for slide to win and I dont even think it would have been the best deck. In my opinion Elf and Nail was the best deck in that era with skullclamp. And even those 2 decks would have held a candle to the combo winter decks that would win turn 1 regularly.

Was expecting someone to mention the missed energy triggers, but no one has yet! He missed 2 energy in game 2, and game 3 he missed the Cub’s trigger, which could’ve become a 5/5 to survive Chandra! Totally different game if that hadn’t of happened.
Also feel like Andrea knew 😅
Great series though, was super surprised Tinker didn’t win.

I'd love to see some better way to even the winning chances for the player going second. In modern it mostly seems like "you start, you win", same as here. G1 Mengu won with 20 life. G2 Carl won with 20 life, G3 Mengu won with 17 life... Are there any homebrew options you guys play at your kitchen table?

notice how two aggro decks are in the finals. Why? its because its a deliberate choice by WOTC. Typically, aggro is the cheapest decks you can build in any given format. So for standard; WOTC's flagship beginners format, they deliberately tend to design cards with more aggro synergies so that new players are more inclined to stick around.

I still think its a shame we didn't get Affinity in this. I understand it obviously didn't win worlds, so its doesnt technically qualify, but it was the best deck of that time. G/W Slide was not even a super good deck, it just absolutely obliterated Affinity.

I guess my comment from an earlier video still held true until the very end, that being me noticing a strong trend of "the deck that gets to play first twice wins".
Loved the concept/games overall but that kinda soured it for me a tiiiiiiny bit. Maybe I'm just salty because my boy psychatog fell victim to this.

To be fair abzan aggro would have been better than the midrange deck
The pressure it put was crazy
    Rhinos were fucking crazy
Dromokas command ruined the standard meta
Warden into command or thoughtsieze into warden into the foremost
    Always turn 4 rhino
