Fennah, I hope you always need to "kill time!", teaching here on TH-cam... Seriously you are a gifted teacher, with a beautiful and musical soul. Thanks so very much for sharing your gift, I've learn't from you, where others fail x

    Great to mention that.
I started guitar in 1984 and after stopping lessons I had nobody who explained me how to play a specific song. Internet and TH-cam were years before existing, notation books for rock and modern music were expensive and often totally wrong. The only chance was spending lot of time repeatedly listening to a song and try to find out by ear how it works. It probably changed the way I am listening to music since then because I always immediately start analyzing when listening to new music 🙃
Today I am thankful that wonderful people like You make good tutorials and I can save much time and faster start to exercise the song. But You are right at first Your brain need to understand what's going on through listening, then You can start playing. 👍🏼

Absolutely fantastic, you and others mention it in your vids but to have it explained to a newby is what's needed, You could struggle for ages without getting it, this is up there with the '5 faces of chords' as a really do need to know lesson, again i say thankyou for sharing your time, skill and knowledge with us.

Fennah , you are the dogs danglies. it shows you have years of real world playing. I'm sticking with you to learn. I have had a guitar for years but it has been mostly an ornament. I have just started to take it serious. I want to be able to get up and play at the local Jam night, no not the Wi. Thanks again C Cornwall

You earned a sub from me. I started playing guitar listening to music on a transistor radio, I was playing by ear then. I can’t read music from a sheet, but I can read and pick up sound waves, thanks for sharing our common music sounds language.

Thanks Rob, perhaps I'll give these songs another go. I have tried them in the past & found something else to move on to (as an excuse). Now you've driven home that method it doesn't seem so daunting. Thanks for all your efforts.

I was glad to hear you found learning "Big Love" a bit tricky. In your recent tutorial you said it wasn't that difficult and I thought there was something terribly wrong with me.😂

It’s tricky when you don’t know how to do it. Once you do, and you get the phrasing in your head, it’s not that hard. 👍🏻

I started finally to learn to read. I figure there are six legs to the musical stool: 1)scales, 2)music theory, 3)ear training and 4)chords (every where) & CAGED system, 5)reading and 6)alternate tunings.

Joleane was oddly the first song I played by ear and realised it’s easier without looking at a sheet of music.
I now listen to a an unfamiliar piece 30 times to hear the little nuances. I found out eventually the secret to playing acoustic guitar was to add the drums and bass in your playing . Jolene for example needs a strong bass line. You need the ROOT note of each chord to mimic the bass run.

Great information thanks Rob! I get the rhythm but it's knowing where the notes of the tune are on the fretboard, that's the difficult part, any tips for that?

  • @vincentrigby5611

Hi yet again 🙃 I assume this is to get the rhythm of the piece of music, and progression do you need also to know the notes, isn't this a more really advanced idea, I can pick out notes either piano or guitar but it takes forever, best way I can put this as playing by ear seems impossiblebly long winded, ps will not be leaving your channel for well could be forever great material, I play rhythm not bad and my style, but finding lead guitar most difficult were to Start I have scale knowledge and major and min pentatonic knowledge but putting it together is another thing. Cheers Vincent

Playing by ear takes of lot of ‘listening’ practice. ✌️

What was the name of the final classical piece? I know it by hearing it. Can or have you done/did a lesson on it? Was it Asturias Leyenda by Issac Albeniz.

A lesson on ear playing by a Liverpoolean and you first sample Lynyrd Skynyrd with so many great bands from Liverpool & Manchester & Birmingham? I guess as a Yankee who grew up on the British Invasion I first think of British bands. 😅

Surely playing by ear is trying to pick up what chords are playing. It looked like you already knew the chords.
