OK, so I finally made this. I didn't have a stapler so I used masking tape. It worked incredibly well. My 9 year old is picky and only eats microwaved popcorn, the bagged stuff loaded with chemicals. He loves this new way! I made it two ways one with popcorn kernels and the other with butter. I suggest making it only with kernels and add the butter later.

I eat popcorn all the time cooked in various ways. I thought it fun to give this a try. It worked perfectly for me, I did the no oil version.
FYI, if you microwave does not have a high enough wattage, even store bought micro popcorn will burn.
Staples will be safe as they are small and low to the bottom of the microwave. Yes you can even put aluminum tv dinners in a microwave as long as the sides are not very high. Just google and all the info is there.
Thanks Jen, never would have known!

A microwave oven uses microwaves (high frequency radio waves) to heat food. Radio antennas are very specific in size and shape, which determines which radio frequencies they resonate at. Metal in the microwave becomes a problem when the metal object is the correct size and shape to resonate at the frequency used by microwave ovens (2.45 Gigahertz). When that happens, the metal absorbs the microwaves like an antenna, and gets really hot really fast. Staples apparently don't resonate at 2.45 GHz.

@TheBiogirl2010 - I always have some kernels that don't pop but if it burned, try a little less time in the microwave. It just takes a few too many seconds for this popcorn to burn. It should still be popping but slowed down when you remove it. I hope this helps.

I notice that you didn't show the pop corn with the oil.
I tried it once before seeing you video and the oil gets real hot.
it was very close to catching on fire with a lot of smoke.
Instead of staples use a plastic bread clip it works fine.
If you use a heavy paper bag you can use it over and over again.

@TheBiogirl2010 - Hmmm. I'm not the only one doing this paper bag popcorn. You'll find other videos on youtube showing the same thing. There has to be an explanation. Can you tell me the brand of popcorn and the list of ingredients on that package of popcorn and also the brand of lunch bags. How many staples? How much popcorn per bag? Send as much info as you can and we will get to the bottom of this!

The artificial-butter-flavored topping is typically from hydrogenated soybean oil (another trans fat), artificial flavoring, beta carotene for color, and preservatives. theaters use different brands or supply sources, but this roster of toxic ingredients is typical. One "flavoring agent" used in popcorn "butter" is called diacetyl, and it has been associated with lung disease among workers in the factories where it's made.In addition, even the salt theaters use is something of a science project.

It could be that your microwave has less wattage than mine. Maybe you could try turning it on for longer, like 3-4 minutes, but keep listening for when the popping slows to about 3 seconds between pops and turn it off. It never fails for me so I hope you can make it work.

  • @theroadwedrove3288

I invented this recipe 25 years ago. I tried various carriers - a big plastic bowl with a lid - nope didn't work. A large paper bag - nope didn't work. Then I tried a lunch sack size paper bag, no butter or oil, 1/3 cup yellow corn (I like yellow), make sure the top is folded over a couple times very tightly and microwave 2 minutes. Then add whatever you like. I always put olive oil and Nutritional Yeast on mine, sometimes chili powder. I don't use salt. For a sweet treat - I drizzle on some honey, added some Hemp Hearts and chopped nuts. So whomever thinks they developed this recipe, now you know where this actually came from. I just never got credit for it.
