Pro tips: if your popcorn isn't popping vigorously enough or burns before a significant number of kernels have popped, you either aren't adding enough kernels to the bag, aren't using a rotating carousel in the oven (crucial), or you are spreading the kernels too far apart on the bottom of the bag. In a normal store-bought bag of microwave popcorn, there is a "susceptor" made of a metalized film which converts microwave radiation into heat, but without that in a simple paper bag, you must rely on the high index of refraction of the food itself to slow the speed of the microwaves, trap them in the food efficiently and heat it internally. This works better for larger, more consolidated masses of food, so you should use at least 1/4th cup of kernels and you should tilt the bag to make a pile of kernels at one corner of the bag before putting it in the microwave. This will increase the thermal inertia of the mass of kernels, reduce their heat loss rate to surrounding air, and increase the microwave absorption efficiency by taking advantage of the microwave radiation-slowing effects of water-containing food's huge index of refraction when consolidated in masses at least as large as a half wavelength of the microwaves being used to irradiate it. In conclusion: use enough kernels , turn the carousel on, and pile the kernels up in a corner of the bag before popping . Enjoy your ultrafrugal science-oven popcorn.
Found a bunch of paper lunchbags in the back of my cabinet a few months ago. no idea why I had them but now I know what I'm gonna use them for! Thanks so much!
This popcorn is so delicious and fun to make! I have a bag of popping corn that seems to last forever. You only need 1/3 cup of popping corn to make a nice big bowl of popcorn. I think once you try this fresh popcorn recipe you will not want to go back to the packaged kind. I hope you can try this Microwave Popcorn in Paper Bag soon!
This recipe sounds better. I tried another video and they used 1/2 c of kernels. That was too much because the bottom of the bags busted and I almost had a mess. I will be trying this was in the future.
Popcorn is one of my fav treats. I eat so much store bought popcorn that I am probably loaded with butter "flavor". I'm going to try your recipe this week!
I just add 1/3 cup of popcorn, pop, then transfer to a bowl and add melted butter, salt or other spice afterwards. Was tired of messing with the oily or buttery bag.
I just finished up some popcorn experiments with my students and I could use some help on some thing. I would like to cook popcorn in a microwave, but I would like to do it where there is no other taste other than the popcorn itself. Essentially, I would like to replicate popcorn that has popped from an air popper, but done it in a microwave. If I just eliminated the salt from your recipe, with the popcorn still pop? In addition, would I get the same results from a stove top pan? The question that I’ve been exploring with the students is if different methods of adding heat to popcorn will affect the taste. So, any insight you could give would be very much appreciated!
You can pop the popcorn without salt. I think you can pop it without oil too. The salt and oil give it extra flavor. If you pop the kernels plain I think they would taste the same no matter which heat method you use. But I am not positive so that is a great experiment! Let me know how it turns out.
@@CookingLessonsforDad sure! Melt a little butter of your liking ahead of time. Does not need to be a lot. They even make a spray butter. Put it in an shake the bag. Then sprinkle a little salt in the bag and shake again. Add more if you need more. Done 😊

@@CookingLessonsforDad you're a bit neater than I am i have a quarter cup measure, drizzle the oil over the top. Let it make it's way to the bottom and dump it in the bag. Once the corn and oil is in, I put a few hearty shakes of my seasoning, a little shake on the way to the microwave and there you have it. 🔥 🔥 warning, if you are not careful sadness occurs. I had to change my measure container, the old one was a small amt more than the 1/4 cup i now use. I popped the bag in and didn't thing about the difference....oh dear, much longer and there would have been flames. Bad enough my house smelled like murdered popcorn for days.
Of course it tastes best and crunchiest when it is fresh. If I was going to store it for a day I would store in in a sealed container. A ziplock bag or plastic container would work.
You can use oil to pop the popcorn. Then add melted butter after the popcorn is popped. My husband melts butter in the microwave and then drizzles the butter on the popped corn (Salt too). Very yummy!
That is too bad. I don’t know why. It has always worked for me. Maybe it has something to do with how hot your microwave gets in a certain amount of time? Maybe try it in a friend’s microwave and see how it turns out?
Can happen with high watt microwave or ineverter kind that u can put foil in. Been doing this for years. I mix all my stuff in the bag and shake. But yup....if u heat the bag again it could....or lower the watts. Life happens.

Can I use any oil
@@Iluvenhypen896 I would use a vegetable oil without too much flavor. I have used grape seed oil. What oil are you wondering about?
I never thought it would be this easy, it came out perfect!
So glad to hear that!

This worked out great. I think we will use coconut oil next time thanks❤

I made this and it is amazing!! This is a good hack to do!!!

Thank you thank you for teaching me this I need to do this for my mom
That is very nice of you. I am sure your mom will appreciate it!
I will definately try this but in the meantime, does the popcorn ever escape the bag? Seems like it would. Oh, I've subscribed too. Thanks!
If you don’t put too much popcorn in the bag and fold over the top it shouldn’t escape 😀. Thanks for subscribing!

I think it would pop just fine without oil. One reason I use oil is to help the salt stick. Let me know how it turns out.
I tried it without oil, and it tastes fantastic! thanks so much!
I love this
Thanks! I hope you can make some tasty popcorn tonight!

Yes. I have made it without oil a few times. Do you have any tips for getting the salt to stick without oil or butter?

Just wonder if their is any PPSA in the bag?
I am not sure. You could contact the company who makes the paper bags.
Im planning to make popcorns before the day of consumption.. can i store it like that in a sealed plastic ?

I appreciate the respect and learning something new!
Extra good popcorn, even without added butter!
Thanks! It really is!
Very nice 👌❤️
Thanks!
Yummy food
Thank you!
Can we use sugar instead of salt??
You can try that. See if it sticks. Maybe both sugar and salt?
How do you get all the kernels to pop?
They never all pop. There are always a few left. I found it does help to get a good quality popcorn.
Save them and pop with thr next batch!
I've made it this way many times. Just be prepared to clean up all the oil that gets in the microwave plate.
I didn't notice that but you could probably set the bag on a plate or paper plate or paper towel?
patty 8873 I use a paper towel
IT. TUN. GOOD😀😀😀😋😋😋😎😋😋
Thanks!
Where do you buy small paper bags?
I find them at the grocery store near the plastic wrap, Ziplock bags and foil. They are pretty cheap. I hope you like the popcorn!
Walgreens, walmart, any place thay sells zip bags.
Could I use oil and butter

It's normal paper bag r separate paper bag for microwave
I use a brown lunch paper bag. They only have one layer.
I do it with No oil
I have done that too. Very delicious!
Dont trip. Even regular popcorn bags have sparked in avg persons microwave. Throw them kernals and salt in that bag and pop
Good to know. Thanks!
Is this a microwave sheet? Or bread
I am not sure what you mean by a microwave sheet or bread.

Actually you don’t need oil tho , but it really depends on your own 😹 erm usually I don’t use oil ... just put it in and about 2 minutes and done
True. The only reason I use oil is I am hoping the salt will stick better. I am not sure if it does or not. Does the salt stick to your popcorn?
@@CookingLessonsforDad no it doesn’t stick at all ..
I guess that is the reason for the oil but you are right you don’t need it.
crunchy though?
Medium crunchy.

Store bought microwave popcorn=high LDL cholesterol.
True.
Just put a little popcorn PLAIN popcorn
Yes you could do that too! So easy!
tried it.. my paperbag went on fire
That’s terrible!
Not a joke: Followed instructions, bag caught on fire in microwave. Would not recommend.

don't try this at work. using a regular paper bag to pop popcorn is a great way to start a fire, set off the fire alarm, and get fired from your job
Did you try it and started a fire?? How long did you pop it for?
