New SHOES for my Honda CB500x 🏍 [S3 - Eps 23]

  • In this episode I am riding to Umeå in Sweden to get some new tires for my Honda CB500X. It wasn't so easy to find dual purpose tires in this part of Sweden as the shops only sell street tires! Luckily, the Pirelli MT-60 tires didn't take long to order so that's what I went for. Ready to continue my journey North after this!

As soon as I see a notification from Itchy Boots the hellish depressing world stops for 15 to 20 minutes and I'm entered into a world of geology, European culture, tins of smelly fish, camping and stunning scenery. I'm sure I'm not the only one who really needs your videos right now. Thank you Noraly X.

Thank you so much for that, you don’t know how happy it made me to read that! I keep on thinking how I can do more, help more, now so many people need it, but I can’t figure out how yet. So until I figure that out, I’m happy that the videos alone are already doing something for people! ❤️

@@toqtoq3361 Yes, I think so. It doesn't appear to be a big stretch for them to switch to English. The British are all distant cousins to Europeans, its highly embarrassing to hear some English attitudes. I read that the Vikings were actually two main groups. Those from Norway and those from the southern parts of Scandinavia. The Southern Vikings were responsible for the Danelaw, while the Northern Norsemen took the North West of Scotland, for a time Dublin and Lancashire. I'm yet to do a test, but it seems like my father's side owes much to the Corded Ware peoples of the Baltic region who moved North and were later absorbed into other groups. It's amazing that these days we can get scientific proof of such events.

I love seeing motorcycle shops in other parts of the world and I fancy traveling the world and visiting these shops. I have worked in the motorcycle industry a couple times in my life, last being a 4 year "sentence" and I was just released in March of 2020 only to find the world being locked down. The gentleman who was changing the tires seems to have a very typical experience of dealership life. He doesn't ride much, nor does he currently own a bike. One or both of those conditions is so common among those I have known in the industry. I jokingly refer to my time in the industry almost like a prison sentence because you kind of get stuck there. When I went back to work in 2016, I intended it to be a transitional job between careers. I never planned to stay 4 years.
Now that I am a free man, I do get out and ride a bit more. With my new job, I am still accumulating adequate vacation time so that I can take a nice trip somewhere in a few months. I can only hope that the Covid situation eases a bit by then, but we certainly are not making great progress here in the USA. I will just live vicariously through video series like this. Thanks for bringing us great content as usual. I wish you continued safe travels and good health.

Good luck @Aaron Behind Bars . BTW, 1.5 months ago I took a 2 week motorcycle trip from Texas to Oregon and back again. It really depends on how you want to do your trip and probably where you're going. Mine was more to see the scenery and roads as I rode, so COVID wasn't much of an issue. Everyone wore masks, food was readily available, the hotels were very clean, etc.. I also kept to myself and the site seeing I did was for the most part things along the road. I hope you're able to get out there soon. :)

@VolDep45 You've got some valid points there and I think I can relate a just LITTLE. My girlfriend's father is on oxygen almost full-time (something like COPD but different) and we're a bit on edge knowing that if he gets the virus that's probably the last time she'll see him (not that she's seeing him now). I also learned how fragile my mother's health is last December due to her heart and cardiovascular issues and I'm afraid to think what would happen if she got COVID.
I really tried to word my reply to Aaron carefully and hope I did not come across poorly. I honestly didn't think too much about health in my reply because Aaron didn't mention it, but it's definitely something to think about.
I believe everyone has to take into consideration their own situation. How's their health, how's the health of those they interact with, where are they going (different States have different rules), what kind of trips do they like to take (do they like to stop in every town/shop along the way or do they just like the view the scenery as it goes by) and so forth.
I thought I'd share my experience because it was another motorcyclist who shared theirs that convinced me, with some preparation and common sense, it was possible to take a trip I'd been dreaming about for almost 2 years. Of course, I'm fortunate, I'm in good health, work from home, and don't live near my girlfriend's father or my mother.
Good luck to you and, hopefully, this'll all be a bad memory soon.

That camping place looks exactly the one i stayed with some polish guy years ago in umeå. We arrived in the middle of the night with our bikes. The reception was closed, but after 18h riding we just had to get some sleep. We slept 4h on the floor of some shed in the common area. In the morning the receptionist still charged us full price...
The polish guy was coming from norway and had so worn out rear tyre that the strings can be seen. The tyre broke in umeå in the night and he had ferry leaving to germany later that day. We managed to find used tire from some tyre shops trash bin, changed that by hand and filled it in some 24h service station which was the only open one in the area. After all that we got to the camping place...
Later the polish guy sent me mail that he got to the ferry just in time 😅👍

You were so close but still so far away :) Welcome to Umeå my city and to northern Sweden, my neighborhood. regarding that you mostly see sports and tourung motorcycles is that in the summer you want to travel to something other than the forest at home, so you have to travel for many hours / days to get to southern Sweden or Europe. after a 3-4 hour trip you are almost still at home. And thanks for all the youtube videos, thanks for sharing a part of your life.

I remember back in ‘87 when i had a motorcycle trip to Nordkapp when i crossed the Artic Circle it became so absolutely freezing in the night that i feared i’ll never wake up again. 😂 From then it was boardinghouses and hotels. And it was in August. The daytime was steaming hot, up to 16-17˚ C but the night,,,,,,,,, 😰
So I can imagine with you camping in September it must be rather chilly.
Ohh, by the way, as far as I can hear you have a pretty good swedish pronouncation. 😊👌

I work in road markings around Sweden (and from time to time Norway and Denmark) and it's fun recognizing a lot of the major roads you travel along and figure out from context clues where you might be even when you're on the gravel. You're in luck riding the e4 outside of the major vacation days for Swedes, it can get pretty crazy with slow caravans, trucks, and fast everything else.
    Safe travels!

The asphalt that was being laid down seems to be done in the same way as I’ve seen done in Finland: several machines in line, some remove the existing asphalt, some others crush and heat it up, and others lay it down (basically recycle the asphalt). Perhaps some Swedish users can confirm.

    • @MyLostYouth

Yes, HUGE propane tanks feed the burners after the first lorry.
When you ride past on a motorcycle you can feel the heat through your pants ;)
And yes, some new asphalt is added and lots are Chew up by the machine heated and recycled, all in one long pass by all the machines.

Saw it stated somewhere that asphalt is THE most recycled material in the world...
The trains of vehicles doing the whole process in one go is probably more common on longer stretches of road and away from plants - around me they usually don't do very long stretches at a time, and I think there's a plant in the region too, so it looks like they cart off the ground off top layer and cart in the freshly processed stuff to be laid down.

    • @MarkRose1337

These bags pack up really small and very light in weight.
    Great for motorcycles.

My sleeping bag is also not to small in size, as it’s nice to be able to move about inside it.

Wish Pirelli would give them the attention they deserve. Now almost no-one who’s testing tire on youtube, include the MT-60. 😢

@@shaungordon9737 Dont know much about the ones in NA. But Sweden have around 3000 bears and very few incidents. Somewhat of 1 per year. And two persons have died by bears in the last 20 years. They are very shy and avoid humans. The majority of incidents are also moose hunters that mistake them for moose. So yeah, pretty tame :D

Noraly. To keep warm in a tent . After years of winter rallys you learn. Its simple and you wonder why you you never thought of it earlier or rather wished you had. Get a old tin biscuit tin. Put loads of holes in lid . Stick a couple or more eight hour candles in tin, you know the little ones , light and put lid on. The PC health and safety lot will be aghast. Put it away from rolling over on it in night. And leave zip a bit open for air to circulate. Warm and toasty in minus degrees.

Thankyou for showing videos of Sweden (and your European adventure) - takes me back. 40 years since I undertook major road trip in Europe . (Flew to London, bought a VW and spent many many months in most countries in Europe and included Greece and some communist countries. Top to bottom, east to west. No GPS, no mobile phones and no internet so I have a great collection of maps! Like you I camped and used cabins) Most of my extended travel since then has been my motorcycle. Hard to beat motorcycle travel ! Your videos are informative and easy to watch. Thankyou for taking us along.
