Pretty amazing results, and what a sweet package perfect for woods, clear cuts, open fields and any place that requires a good bit of hiking. Would have loved a rifle like this in my youth.
I owned a Ruger Model77 since 1979 in 30-06 it has been the reason for a lot of meat in my freezer. And they were obtained with 180 grain ptd soft point core-lokt ammo the rifle and the ammo did it’s part 99% of the time if I did my part. A few yrs ago I gave this rifle to my son. And I hunt with a Tika in 270winchester and 130 grain core lokts work like a charm! Love this video! 👍👍😊
I got one on order, A Howa barreled action, Retired all my magnums, At 55 years old, My joints and bones fill it when I squeeze the trigger, Enjoying the light recoiling calibers, Took me 40 or so years to figure out I didn’t need a magnum rifle to fill the freezer.
Suggestion: If you're wanting to reduce the effect of the barrel temperature variable in your testing, get a $15 IR thermometer from Harbor Freight and choose a location on the barrel to take measurements consistently. This way you can make sure the barrel has cooled sufficiently before the next group.
Considering how often you do this type of video and how consistent your process is, seems like the perfect oppurtunity to gather data on how a shusher machine affects grouping.
I’m sure he will cover that. In my experience, with a Banish 30, velocity hasn’t changed more than +\- 10 fps. Vertical point of impact is all I’ve seen shift much and it’s usually 1-1.5” high.
Excellent! Very excited about these Gen IIs. Also, I have a soft spot for the old 7-08; it is sort of getting “covered up” by the huge popularity of the 6.5 Creedmoor but it remains a peachy cartridge.
Love my Ruger American Gen 2 7mm-08. When sighting it in last month, I was rewarded with some nice 100 yard groups. I don't have calipers, I used a tape measure and my Mark 1 eyeball and measured a 3/4 inch group with Remington 140 gr. Core Lokts. A really pleasant surprise was a 5/8 inch group with 140 gr. Federal Fusions! They were my go to in my 243. I noted that in your ammo test video with your Gen 1 Ruger American 7mm-08, you tried the 120 gr Fusions and it didn't like them. You should try the 140's in your Gen 2 and see how they shoot. Love your videos WTW!
Fantastic. Very well done. You are an excellent shot. Your hold & trigger pull were very consistent . I would think that had you fired more groups one of them would have been 025". However 0,82" average groups with a stock rifle and factory non-premium ammo is remarkable.
I think this is one of the best lower prices rifles! I love the 708 it's my favorite deer catcher but my 6.5 prc is close on its heels for the title. Darren
I am going to take a old Remington 721 that I got from a pawn shop and I am got a barrel coming for it to make a 280 AI this year it was the b model with a checker wood stock and I think it will be a fun project what do you think
I view those groups a little differently. In my mind you just shot a 12 round group. If you were to measure the coordinates of each shot and calculate the ES and mean radius of the 12 rounds it would be an even more meaningful expression of the true bench rest precision of the rifle. Just guessing but the total 12rd group size looks to be around about 1.5” ish which is pretty dang impressive for that type of rifle and ammo. You mentioned on some shots speculation if this one or that one was just “me”. I see that a little differently too.. IMO every single impact is a byproduct of the system comprised of the ammo, the rifle, the rest, and you, and the conditions. Quite literally, what you ate for breakfast that morning and how that affects your performance is even expressed in that 12rd group. BTW… ain’t 708 grand?… I absolutely love that cartridge. Cheers!
Actually the 7mm-08 is the ballistic twin to the 7 x 57 Mauser. WDM William D. Bell brained many of the 1000 elephants he dropped with 175 grain round nose full metal jacket bullets. And elephants are culled from helicopters using the 308 cartridge. I like 7mm-08 cartridge based on the 308 cartridge better though.
Great video and very informative, I was really curious how that would shoot with the barrel twist. I've been impressed with the rifle and how it has shot in the the videos so far. Thanks
I hope Remington isn’t the only type of ammo we get to see run in it. We don’t see a whole lot of Remington ammo in my area and what little we do see usually isn’t for the caliber you’re looking for
Nice shooting WTW! I would love to see some match grade rounds group in this gun. Not sure what the Hornady ELDM weight is for 7mm-08 but I would love to see what it can do.
Im really considering one of these. I tend to not even look at cheaper priced options just assuming they wont make me happy but there are not too many manufacturers offering this type of setup in 7mm-08. If Tikka had the T3X Roughteck available in the US with that cambering it would be an easy choice. But they dont seem to.
Question. With all of your Rugers, have you ever noticed any trend with the more ammo you put through them they get a bit more accurate? I've noticed it in many rifles, both factory, and custom, the latter, to a lesser degree.
Commented on a earlier comment here but I own 2 American predator rifles in 6.5 and 7mm-08 and both of them got more and more accurate through the first 60 - 80 rounds. Both tightened up significantly
I see on the Ruger website that the 7.62 X 39 model comes with mini 30 mags. I guess it makes sense for them to just grab them out of the pile and throwing them in the box with the gun, but AICS mags make more sense to me.
Unless you are a Ruger guy, and already have a mini 30 and a bunch of mags ;) I just picked up a Ruger American Predator in .223 that uses AR mags, mainly because I already have a bunch, and ammo.. and dies.. :)
I'm watching you pull the trigger and noticed that you use a hold where you have your thumb laying atop the pistol grip/comb.... I have seen that position a lot with bench shooters. I was taught and continue to use a grip where my thumb circles the top of the stock, giving more of a "lock" (or pressure) on the stock and providing a more consistent (IMHO) position from which I pull the trigger. I'm wondering if you use the same hand hold when hunting? I suspect not because, when hunting, you are holding the rifle stock with your right hand and the forearm with your left.... giving you solid control of your rifle when out in the field. Just thought that, perhaps, you'd like to think of the differences in your rifle "hold" and how it may affect your trigger pull. Your new Gen II is giving plenty good groups as is and I'd sure accept it as a great hunting rifle. I went from a borrowed 30-30 Marlin to my own personal 7mm WM and could get groups down to 1".... but this "kid" asked for, and was given, too much rifle (should have been something like a 7x57 for better consistency).... after a lot of shooting... and some informed coaching from from shooters while in the USAF (of all things....), when I returned home to hunting with that 7mmRM... my groups dropped to 1/2" with a finely tuned original Ruger M77. Most of that was my insuring a consistent hold and position on the cheek piece. Blessings, Brother, I always enjoy your videos. The Gen II, in 7mm-08 would be my choice for a hunter if I wasn't wedded to my .270.
I was taught wrapping your thumb over the stock puts potential bad energy into the stock that can badly affect your groups. Thumb over the stock is old-school shooting taught before precision bench rest shooting was a thing.
