    People complain about the sounds. Please think about the palette and the potential. I listened to a version of Inception's Time theme performed by a multitracked Minibrute. It sounded awesome even on TH-cam. This Peak could produce absolute prodigies if the player has talent, imagination and a work ethic. If you're a typical-commenter-tier user, then you won't sound good even if you have unfettered access to Zimmerman's and Junkie XL's studio - unless you learn how to use your tools properly.

      As an owner of Minibrute I will say that in terms of basic sound character Peak sounds very harsh, spiky, cold and stiff compared to the Minibrute. Far less musical sound and I can see myself searching for those sweet spots in it, because from what I've heard in demos (I've listened most of them, including Summit) this synth doesn't seem to have a wide sweet spot, but one has to really figure out where it sounds good. It's obvious that it is very easy to make it sound bad. I'd really like to play it in person and see if the harshness can be dialed out. Most presets in the demos are overcooked with too much FM and distortion. On paper, sure, Peak has tremendous potential, but for me if the basic tone doesn't cut it I don't care about the complexity of architecture. On my first listen I thought: "Wow, this is one synth that would be very difficult to fit in a mix well without a lot of EQing and compression."
      In terms of basic raw tone there are many, many synths, hardware and software that sound way more pleasant to the ear. Peak is simply, well, peaky and my ears suffer when I listen to it.

      You say, "People complain about the sounds. Please think about the palette and the potential." Is that being presented here?

    • @kierenmoore3236
      @kierenmoore3236 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol … well, you can’t change the fundamental timbre - nit without a lot of work. The most analog-sounding patches I’ve heard from the Peak (and I’ve been through, watched, tested EVERYTHING) don’t cut it for me … ymmv. I understand the convenience, features, etc - but it is a compromise … and if the sounds/possible timbres don ‘t do it for you, no amount of polyphony or features can make up for that, in my book …

  • @KacyDennis
    @KacyDennis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Thanks so much Nick. Those particular patches do a considerably better job of showcasing the sonic palette and capabilities of the instrument than anything else I've heard at this point. Much appreciated.

      Friendly tip: be a music prostitute only once: create a shitty track like "Whoppa gangnam style". Your bank account will be huge and then you can buy all the synths you dream off. You can even use them to create good music :-)

      unmonox > Correct 100%!!! A few of the secrets for success: 1. Choose the style of your music. 2. Make your music sound different from other producers, don't copy others! 3. Use melodies (harmony) 4. Make excellent master and demos. 5. In your demos, use only the maximum four of your VERY BEST tracks. 6. Copyright them through a Music Attorney. 7. Use a well known Music Publisher. 7. It takes time for song pitching, be patient. 8. When they offer you a recording contract DON'T sell your copyrights, add an Auditor's Clause to your contract 9. Don't let your music to be released in a compilation LP. 10. If you sign a contract, that doesn't mean that the Label will release your songs!!! Be careful... and good luck!!!!!!!!

      Nice synth, but a lot of coin for 8 digital voices and 4 banks of presets.

    • @MrLawrence0071
      @MrLawrence0071 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EpicWinz You think? You can find it slightly over 1000 these days. For what the thing does, it's a bargain. Certainly compared to the INSANE prices a DSI costs... And honestly, I yet have to hear the first DSI that can compete with this beast in terms of sound. It's relative and personal, I get it :)

  • @WxkR

    I think this demo shows the more traditional-sounding side of the Peak, which is pretty good and Nick, being very musical, does a great job at showing that. However, I understand that with the proliferation of excellent analog synths today, this might not be the preferred one for many people. I, myself prefer the Dreadbox boxes in several respects, Deepmind can do amazing pads, the DSI/Pioneer box produces very clean, controlled sounds, the Roland SE 02 can be super aggressive in the lower octaves and pristine in the higher, etc. But if you check other demos of the Peak around TH-cam, you'll notice it can do a lot more than this. Hear the more percussive patches and non tonal sequences (more rhythmic than melodic) and you'll realize that this is not just a great musical tool but a weapon for sonic transgression. I really think this synth has the potential to become the staple of electronic music genres just about to surface. It could become a legendary instrument.

    I love the sound of the Novation Peak. It sounds fresh and warm at the same time. I don't have a lot of space for gear, and I keep thinking about adding this. I haven't heard anything I like this much in a long time.

    • @adamhurst86
      @adamhurst86 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I know this is an old thread, but I can understand how some people think it sounds bad. I have had my Peak for about a week. Initially and from a lot of the demo videos it sounds thin and not as robust as its true potential. I even thought about sending it back after the first night, but as I was able to work with it more - especially using the FM between wavetable oscillators in the modulation matrix - I now have been able to program some pretty amazing patches. This thing is capable of making some very soft beautiful and lush sounds, as well as some very aggressive and edgy basses, leads, pads, and soundscapes. It is a lot different to program than others synths I own or have played with. Once you figure out the voice spread/unison options and mod matrix routing, it is a pleasure to program on, and the patch possibilities are endless. Not to mention the excellent build quality and software support. Upgrading firmware or switching between banks is incredibly simple using the Novation Components website. The latest firmware update added more wavetables to the mix, and I hope they will continue with adding more wavetables as future updates come out. This synth offers a new flavor that can sound very analog or digital with an inherent warmth. I have analog synths in my studio, this is my first hybrid, and next I will be getting the Hydrasynth when they are back in stock. Analog, hybrid, and full digital in my arsenal to cover all flavors and character.

    i literally sat in my studio, put my krks on loud and listened with closed eyes. i had goosebumps... i think the peak is just a kind of new and unusual sounding syntesizer. there are so many possibiltiys to route the the sound and edit it.
    in my opinion just something new to its relatives like moog 37.
    But i'm not sure if it isnt a little too expensive, would be cool if it would have a keyboard

    I think it sounds excellent, the distortions on it and the reverb seem to give it a lot of it's character; and it's certainly got a warmer and diffeent sound than the Wadorf Quantum, not that that means better, but different in a good way. Really useful I think having those lovely distortions and cavernous reverb. Very interested.

    Thanks for playing the presets just in the right ambient playstyle. I bookmarked this video, watching it every time I wonder if I should spend the $$$ for the Peak or not. Oxford oscillators good and all, but eventually what matters is how it sounds. If I can make a full song from every patch this machine is gold.

    Until now I was undecided between this and the Deepmind, but now I'm more toward the Peak. A much wider palette of timbres and patches sounds good with less amount of effects to me. I just find some of these presets a little harsh for my taste. Nice pads.

    • @Nachtdwaler
      @Nachtdwaler 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is pretty much true for all instruments, but I guess in the end it kinda depends on the user's workflow.
      I see that in a minimalist or limited space setup one can't keep stacking synths even though he/she wants to :P

      Nothing beats playing a synth in person, I didn't comprehend from YT videos just how lovely DM12 sounds, with or without FX. Went into GC for a midi controller, left with DM12, it's everything I could have wanted in a keyboard, it punches well above its price.

    I do believe I shall be adding this to the arsenal in the not so distant future. I like the sizzly, crunchy sound of the distortion. The strings sound fantastic! The form factor makes it a great solution for a live rig. I'm loving the sound of these hybrids. The DSI Pro 2, the Modals; this is the way ahead in my mind.

    Hey Nick, thanks again for another nice update on the Peak. As you have reviewed both extensively, how does the ultranova measure up against the peak in your opinion ?

    • @donaldpriola1807
      @donaldpriola1807 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll answer for you. The Peak's sound is ridiculously good, especially with the marvelous onboard effects. The Ultranova is sneaky good though, especially with its extensive modulation capabilities; it also has more polyphony. It's a great bargain on the used market. It does help if you know your synthesis programming, as it isn't truly a knob per function synth. But it's worthy, especially for under $400. However, If you have the cash, the Peak is absolutely stunning, and one of my favor rite synths ever, but at a bargain, your'e getting a lot with the Ultranova.

    I'm a newbie with some basic synth experience trying to decide between the Peak ad the Hydrasynth. Peak seems to have the sound quality and knobs but more diving. The Hydra appears easier to program bigger? wider? more? FM with less diving aking it mre immediate.

      Jim Walker They bought synths costing $2000+ and it bothers them the Peak sounds so good and has so many features.

      I played one earlier today at PMT in Birmingham and it sounded great - the balance between digital and analogue has been really well thought out. I can easily see why Nick got lost in its sounds - it just wants to be tweaked.

      Analog snobbery is probably the most hilarious thing to happen in electronic music in a long time. Oh well, more interesting hybrids and purely digital gadgets for us.

      Actually it is, program change on fpga board is fast, you can play midi cc codes and change programs on fly and use it like multitimbral synth.
