Apple was very close to releasing a Super Cube. I heard that from a person who worked in RAM compatibility testing at Micron in Idaho. The engineering samples they'd been sent had one RAM slot that for some reason didn't work. How they'd test involved taking a computer apart and mounting the mainboard to a fixture so it'd be easier to swap RAM. They'd done that with the original Cubes and the engineering samples of the Super Cube. But after being sent production samples of the Super Cube, the word came to not bother with testing because Apple had decided to not put it into production. So somewhere in a Micron warehouse in Mountain Home, Idaho, there may still be some Super Cubes on a shelf, next to a box full of dismantled Cubes and Engineering Sample Super Cubes. They never bothered to reassemble anything they'd tested, and unless a manufacturer requested (and paid for) return or certified destruction, the systems tested went into a warehouse.
I think every Device without an Headphone jack is behind of its time because in every Single Device is enough Space to put an Headphone jack inside maybe in the near Future it wont be possible but Today it is...
Gaming Embassy I love all computers with PowerPC architecture. My first PowerPC computers were Power Macintoshes from the 90s, and later in the early 2000s I got a G3 and G4. I currently don’t have any PCs or non-Apple computers with PowerPC chips, but I’d really like to buy a new Raptor Talos 2, which uses modern POWER9 PowerPC chips.
Fun fact you could add a fan into these towards the bottom and put G4’s up to 1.8ghz and the GPU can be upgraded as it has a standard AGP slot, but the card has to be small enough to fit, limiting options. The ram also goes up to 2gb. With those upgrades, these old guys could out perform the G4 mac minis.
I worked at Apple when the Cube was released. I still have mine somewhere in the garage I think. It sold out at launch and for the first 2 weeks the sales were very strong...Then it happened. It was published about the screws in the top being over torqued and cracking the top plastic (This was not the case, it was from the fill process in with the acrylic). Needless to say the WSJ did an article about it and it was deemed a "flaw" by the media. At this point we tried to fix the process but it wasn't doable. You could return your cube or get money back. It was canceled only after 3-6 months (I can't remember when we got the memo). Crazy times.
I had worked at Apple from '79 to '85, and was working at Sun Microsystems when the Cube came out. We were using some Macs in the documentation department where I was, and we got a couple Cubes to add to the early Macs we were also using. The "cracking" problem was clearly an issue with injection molding fill lines, but the press never really got it right. Interesting machine; one ended up coming home with me when we replaced them, and my wife used it for several more years before the iMac she's still using replaced it.
I acquired a G4 Cube in January, and I've upgraded it quite extensively. I actually installed TWO SSDs: an mSATA SSD running Mac OS 9.2, and a 2.5-inch SATA SSD running Tiger in place of the optical drive. The Cube's optical drive died a while ago, and since I had several IDE-to-SATA adapters left over from earlier projects, I decided to turn my Cube into a dual-SSD machine! I bought a great Formac Firewire external optical drive. It's only a CD-ROM drive, but due to the Firewire connection, inserted discs load almost instantly on the desktop. I also installed a GeForce 2 MX graphics card with 32 MBs of V-RAM, and a fan (powered with a Molex double-adapter) to cool the new card more effectively. The only component I haven't touched is the processor. I actually own a 1.2 Ghz G4 upgrade card, but it's unsupported for the Cube, and while other Cube owners I know have unsupported processor cards in their Cubes, I don't want to risk breaking my Cube's brain. I already had some hairy moments of failed booting while upgrading the Cube's hard-drive situation. Since my main computer is a 2008 Mac Pro, Firewire 400 is far more convenient for transferring new files onto my Cube than through the Cube's slow USB 1.1 ports. My Cube runs really well, and I use it for retro gaming and music (as the USB speakers sound amazing). The Cube runs Mac OS 9 and earlier games flawlessly, and handles 3D games fairly well. RealMyst is pushing the Cube a bit, but RealMyst has never run well on any of my Macs (even my Mac Pro with a 1GB HD 5870 graphics card). Max Payne gets a bit juddery during gun-fights, but is still very playable. My favourite computers are my 2008 Mac Pro, my Cube and my Lombard G3 Powerbook. I love my Cube and had a great time upgrading it, and I'm glad you're so pleased with your own Cube. :)
Okay, so I spent a good chunk of last night binge watching many of type videos. Loving how you restore so many old pieces of tech. And you're content is pretty clean.
Amazing how much effort you put in these videos. Mad refurbish-skills, too. It really is fascinating how many of the apple designs hold up for years or even decades to come. Cheers from Germany!
Wow you’re editing is amazing!, I love the camera angle! The parts where are you talk to the audience! Beautiful I’m inspired to edit my videos this way! 😍❤️
Man I love your videos so much. They are so relaxing and I love how much effort and care you put into them. Now to just find myself some methalated spirits and eucalyptus oil in Canada and I'm set.
You should be able to connect a 24 inch Studio Display on it. Back when this came out, every computer store selling Macs had one for display and there have been many case mods for it.
That was my main computer for a few years back in the day. I almost upgraded the CPU with a sonnet upgrade later on. I think I was going to go for a 700mhz G4.
I've got a 500MHz G4 Cube I bought new in 2000. It's been sitting mostly idle since about 2006, and I thought the hard drive and CD/DVD drive were going bad. I've owned dozens of different models of Macs since 1984, but it's the one I can't bear to part with, just because it's such a classic. I just recently got it working again, planning to put an SSD in it and max out the RAM. Perfect machine for running pre-OS X software (though I put Tiger on it, too). Speakers and everything are still in good shape.
this was one of my dream computers growing up. i was lucky to be able to purchase one again recently. already upgraded the CPU to a 1.4GHz 7450 G4, 1.5GB RAM, nvidia Geforce 6200, 128GB SSD. if only i could get an aftermarket superdrive but those are all long out of production. i simply love these vintage apple computers
I will be saving up for one of these. There is a video that shows you how to restore the rubber on the speakers and also convert the speaker connectors to usb with soldering.
Apple discontinued it after about a year saying it only sold a third of what was expected. Still 41,000 people bought one and people continue to love and mod them today. There's a Mac World article on this. The Cube at 10. Why Apple's Eye Catching desktop flopped. I still want one and will have it, though many being sold either are listed as untested, broken or do not work. I don't know if one could repair the Cube case today. Repairing the inside is possible. This could be considered the Father of the Mac Mini. I wish Apple would consider making a 20 year anniversary model with modern graphics, cpu, memory etc and modern connectors and a mini cam.
I used to do PC emulation on my Cube! On a Connectix Windows emulator. Lil rough coz the Intel CPU was emulated. I should get it going again and show it. It ran DOS pretty well!
Yeah, I have a powermac g4 and can’t get any web browsers even the supported ones to work via usb or disc, or find any software anywhere, but i still love it
Nice! My co-worker just gave me her G4 Cube, I’ve not unboxed it yet to take a look. I surely wanted one back when I had my Power Mac G4. I’ll have to do some video covering what I find as I get into it,
I've been watching your vids for a year and it was after rewatching this one, on purpose, that I realized I wasn't subbed. Well, I fixed that. Great channel, mate.
TenFourFox requires more RAM but he has it. Camino was a great web browser but no workey on the modern web. I have it on my Cube and it runs pretty well. Much slower than Camino tho'.
Kudos dude I’m hella happy for anyone that takes youtube on professionally, that’s goals for me one day ! Also that is crazy how the design does still fit in today’s zeitgeist
Damn that thing looks good! Amazing that Apple now can not only have a fanless laptop that doesn't overheat, but it's also super powerful for something of its size!
A friend owned one of these around 2001. It looked supercool and minimal on her desk but she pretty much only ever used it to run MS Word and write uni essays! p.s. In 2000, 640Mb RAM was considered a huge amount. A bit like having 600Gb RAM today.
It is so cool to see people still holding on their beautiful Macs, i still have very first Macintosh computer... the iMac G3 DVD SE with the original box and all accessories it came with, i also have a Power Mac G4 Cube in almost near perfect condition i purchased from eBay many years ago and a Power Mac G4 Double Mirror desktop in great condition.Thank you for the video, it was great to watch and appreciate other fellow Mac owners still enjoying their Apple relics. Peace!!!
Holy shit this is crazy!!! This seems so futuristic and honestly seems ahead of it time. This literally looks like what I would assume the future of computers looks like. It’s also crazy that there was a Mac desktop and literally no one even knows about. Crazy!
I own one of these, I got it for free from a house that my mom was renting out, the person renting the house never paid their bills, so they were kicked out and left behind a mess that is straight out of my hoarder life, I can't even describe what was in the house, but I saw a G4 cube laying on the floor, I was super stoked to find one! And I took it home, and now I proudly display it on my tech collection.
The stupid acrylic foot my 23" Cinema display was also broken when I bought it, after seeing the 100 goddamn dollar list price for a replacement, I found that the best makeshift solution is to prop it on a cheap, easel-style guitar stand from Amazon. Works surprisingly well.
This was my first Apple Computer, the G4 was an amazing little Computer In it’s day till Apple moved over to Intel Processors. Years later I gifted the G4 Cube to a Deign Museum of modern Art.
Much of the time you can buy speaker foam/rubber suspension replacement kits, not sure if it works with speakers like those though. The glue usually comes off with some isopropyl and some scraping, its not so hard assuming they didn't glue the housings together.
Nice purchase; I ve always wished to get a Cube, its a beautiful piece of hardware. It looks great!!! I have just repaired the Apple Pro Speakers I bought for my Quicksilver G4 a while ago. They came in the same conditions, with desintegrated and sticky rubber surrounds . Well, after some research I cleaned the expoiled rubber and put the unexpensive rubber surrounds I bought from Aliexpress and some Tacky glue. Like new! I keep the link if you want to buy them. I paid like $3 for a pair and they fit nicely. I took the link from another TH-cam comment, btw!
That was a great deal man! I’ve been on the lookout for a cube for about 5 years. Hope I won’t have to wait 10! But I do have every component in the video, except the cube itself and the power supply.
You can get new speaker drivers for those small ball speakers. Just measure the diameter on it and hit it up in ebay or even better search with the model number printed onto magnet
What a find! I’ve wanted a G4 cube for years. Sad to hear about the cones on the speaker, but I believe that’s happened to most of those speakers over time, the iMac G4’s speakers were much more resilient as they were made out of another material.
@@psivewri I happen to have a iMac G3 from roughly 1999 that had more or less the same foam used on the G4 cube speakers, weirdly they didn't disintegrate yet...
they should have brought this design back (without the plastic around the cube) to serve as a cheaper alternative to the 2019 Mac Pro, replacing the Mac Mini. That opening mechanism is amazing, and pulling the sleeve off of the pc to get access to all of the internals is what i'd love in a sff pc.
Folks complained about the Mac Cube running hot, which mine didn't. It was a Mac Book Pro I had at work that actually CAUGHT ON FIRE! Imagine my surprise. Torched itself. Those were the days!
Hope y'all enjoy this video 🙂 I'm starting to treat TH-cam like a business so expect more videos soon 👌

"Methylated Spirits"? Is that Aussie for Isopropyl Alcohol?
Methylated spirits is stronger and should be sparingly used. Isopropyl is a mild cleaning solvent, which would have been more suitable.
Probably

Methylated means "alcohol denatured with methanol", which is easily found in the US as denatured alcohol, not to be confused with isopropyl alcohol.

1:36 Damn that handle is satisfying!
Love the cleaning/ upgrading montage. 👌👌👌
That was a great deal man! I’ve been on the lookout for a cube for about 5 years. Hope I won’t have to wait 10! But I do have every component in the video, except the cube itself and the power supply.
Also, I can’t wait for more videos! I hope you do more on iPods!
What shooter was the game your were playing?
Beautiful computer, gorgeous Display.
God damn, you look and sound so polite when you talk. I fucking love it.
I turned the bottom into an aquarium.
You can get new speaker drivers for those small ball speakers. Just measure the diameter on it and hit it up in ebay or even better search with the model number printed onto magnet
GDOyIIH! Great video MAYYYYTE!!
I love these videos
You could probably refoam the speakers if you felt like it. The cones themselves look good - it’s just the foam surrounds that have disintegrated.
What a find! I’ve wanted a G4 cube for years. Sad to hear about the cones on the speaker, but I believe that’s happened to most of those speakers over time, the iMac G4’s speakers were much more resilient as they were made out of another material.
Very true! My iMac G4 speakers are all still working great 👌
@@psivewri I happen to have a iMac G3 from roughly 1999 that had more or less the same foam used on the G4 cube speakers, weirdly they didn't disintegrate yet...
You can get replacement foam rings from AliExpress for not much. A bit of glue and the speakers will be a good as new.
dang that custom stand tho I'm loving it!
they should have brought this design back (without the plastic around the cube) to serve as a cheaper alternative to the 2019 Mac Pro, replacing the Mac Mini. That opening mechanism is amazing, and pulling the sleeve off of the pc to get access to all of the internals is what i'd love in a sff pc.
G4 cube is by far the most beautiful personal computer in my opinion.
Folks complained about the Mac Cube running hot, which mine didn't.
It was a Mac Book Pro I had at work that actually CAUGHT ON FIRE! Imagine my surprise. Torched itself.
Those were the days!
