My dad found the case for one of these a couple years back, completely empty though unfortunately. Overall a very solid case with a great design and I would say it's better than 98% of cases today.
The monitor on the other had (which was also found, however separate from the Mac Pro) is astonishing. I'm using it as my only monitor for my PC and I couldn't be happier. Great design, solid build quality, great "life-life" image quality and handy touch-sensitive brightness buttons on the side.
The only Apple product I've personally owned (apart from the monitor) is my trusty iPad mini 2 and my mums old iPhone 4.

I tinkered with this machine so much back in the day. With the dual quad core's and flashed to a cMP 2,1, it had a lot of horsepower. It finally met it's demise, when I somehow accidentally bent some of the cpu socket pins and I moved on to the cMP 3,1. It was a great machine to learn on about hardware upgrading and boot efi's.

I can't recall what it gets you but you can easily flash a 1,1 MacPro to a 2,1. Also these can have the CPUs swapped out for something faster and the RAM can be maxed all the way to 32 GB fairly cheaply. I keep one of these as a "garage" computer at my electronics workbench and it is still shockingly good.

They are designed for servers that are meant to run all the time. The metal enclosure for each stick is a heat sink for the RAM chips. This generation of the Mac Pro required these server RAM sticks until the 2009 models, when by then they only needed to be ECC memory.

As a 4,1 -> 5,1 user, I sure do like to see cMPs getting their life back. Not a bad find considering it came with the ACD and decent GPU to accompany it. If you stumble across a 3,1 cMP, i recommend OpenCore Legacy Patcher, OCLP. If you get a 4,1 then i recommend flashing to 5,1 and then going with Martin Lo’s OpenCore package.

Sweet find! I found something similar: A Power Mac G4 dual 500 MHz for $5. Works perfectly, just missing the optical/zip caddy/faceplate, the hard drive, and one of the 3 hard drive sleds. It also didn't include anything else, but it's in otherwise amazing shape. The PSU didn't have a single bulging cap, either, and the G4 power supplies are known to fail. Talk about luck.
It's rather ironic that what was once Apple's top-tier professional computer offering for $3499 could be found for a total of $9 including the bus I took to pick it up. These are going for as high as nearly 10% of their original price on eBay. It's amazing what you can find on Facebook Marketplace.

    • @DJSekuHusky
      @DJSekuHusky 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I had the single core 500Mhz G4. Found it on the side of the road back in 2008.
I ended up getting the Sonnet 1GHz CPU upgrade for it from a thrift store for $10, still packed in the original box.
Ended up selling it for like $40. By then I had upgraded to the dual processor 1.83GHz PowerMac G5, bought from a Goodwill Computer store for $29.99 in 2010.
Just yesterday I went dumpster diving and snagged a mint condition working 2011 Mac Mini (Core i5) from a roll-off dumpster behind a warehouse.
It now joins my 2010 27" iMac (Core i5) bought from a Goodwill for $69.99 and upgraded with an i7-860 I got from my school's dumpster (in the original retail box).

@@redleader6442 Yeah, I had wanted to purchase a Sonnet card on eBay, so I knew what it was as soon as I saw it.
Thought it would be dead or something but, by everything I could tell, it had never even been installed.
The guy I sold that Mac to was a beginner in music production and had put up a CL ad specifically for this era of Mac, and it had to be like 800+ MHz G4 minimum to run the older music software he had a license for.
I told him I had a 1GHz G4, then I show up with this visibly older style rig and the guy was a bit suspect of it until I popped the panel and showed him the purple heatsink with the Sonnet tag on the fan, then booted it up to show it was indeed a 1GHz G4. I even helped him to successfully install, activate and run his software on it.
Guy was extremely thankful; I was happy to sell it to someone who would put it to good use.

    • @redleader6442
      @redleader6442 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@DJSekuHusky I'm not sure what's more impressive: That you found a Sonnet upgrade card for such a low price, or that it's new old stock (or as good as). Thrift stores are magical places. I once paid $15 at one, for an old Athlon system with a Voodoo3 and an Aureal Vortex2, and ended up knocking more than half of my next month's apartment rent out with the profit I made from fixing and reselling it.
I love the design of the graphite and white PMG4's because it just screams modern art, akin to something you'd find on the wall of a professional music studio. The fact that you sold yours to an aspiring producer is oddly fitting.

This was such a great machine. Bought mine as a refurb from the Apple store in 2007 and used it as my daily driver for a full decade. Mine is retired now (it uses way too much power) but I still fire it up and play with it occasionally. You can use an NVMe SSD in it (700MB/s) but only for storage, not booting. A GT710 will work with the appropriate web driver if you want a fanless video option.

My school's electronics recycling dock regularly throws out a lot of hardware, I salvaged enough to build a hackintosh running Monterey and a 27 inch Apple Cinema Display hooked up to it, which is a 1440p panel with awesome speakers (actually better than the new bose soundbox I was using), webcam, microphone, all the bells and whistles. Still pretty bright, but had to use Lunar to configure the brightness otherwise it'd break. In general though, that hackintosh is an amazing machine running an i7 7700, 2x 8gb ddr4 2133, rx 470 sapphire nitro+, a gigabyte ultra durable whatever board, and a mediocre psu. Couldn't be happier, since nearly all of it was for free.

Haha, that dust is nothing compared to a computer at work that reception used for nearly nine years. By the time it was decommissioned, it was so caked full of dust that it had pretty much no airflow & I couldn't even see the CPU. I had the honorable job of removing the hard drive out of the machine and, since the dust was so dense, I didn't want to dirty my clothes, so I ended up wearing a mask, a disposable apron and gloves to get the hard drive out. What would usually take me a couple of minutes ended up taking me at least 15 minutes, most of which was me laughing at myself for needing to wear so much PPE to take the hard drive out. It reminded me of the days when I worked at a meat processing plant and needed to wear more or less the same type of PPE, all because I didn't want to dirty my clean clothes. Anyway, good find with the Mac Pro and I'm sure you will give it a good home.

I couldn't install Windows 10 directly, however I was able to install Windows 7 (and there are tutorials you can follow to create a modified install disc to be able to install the 64 bit version), which can then be upgraded from there directly to Windows 10. It's probably not going to run any modern heavy duty games, but for regular web browsing, videos, older/light games, it works pretty well (definitely way better than my Mac mini from around the same timeframe, which struggles even to play TH-cam videos).

Hey, sorry but I cannot stress this enough, but whatever you do, DO NOT ERASE ANY INFORMATION ON THE DRIVE! If you do and it is a file system for Mac OS, you cannot get it back unless your a huge coder that can make code quick and easy, (meaning a week) because that File system has all the Boot EFIs and img for the system. If you do this, use a VM so you don't erase anything. Someone did the same thing and payed the price for their Apple Sins. They did what you did and installed windows, but cleaning the drive deleted Mac OS and the Boot EFIs and img files. In the future, be more cautious, and it lowers the value of these beautiful relics.
P.S. I am a hardcore apple fan that dreams of having the Prototype devices as well as officially released devices.

@@dbbrant3522Well I usually know enough to stay away from system files and haven't ran a drive cleaner in years, besides this one didn't even have a HD in it when I got it, so I had to put one in and install Mountain Lion (with a CD I had) before even installing Windows); so if something did happen; I'd just wipe the whole drive and do it all again (which is how I normally do it anyway - not many files on that computer that are THAT important/not backed up elsewhere, and what there is is mostly saved on a secondary drive in one of the other bays).

Of the Mac Pro’s the 3,1 is the one I used most and still use from time to time. Getting it running Mojave and adding an SSE4.2 emulation layer allowing the function of the Metal API and use of Polaris and Vega cards from Radeon makes it rather silly. But it was certainly fun.
There are 3D printed drive sleds available for the various older macs and I’ve seen some files on thingiverse for them.
The 4,1 and 5,1 are certainly better than the 3,1. And substantially better than the 1,1 or 2,1.
The 1,1 and 2,1 were all SATA2 and PCIe1.0 slots, and only firewire400
    The 3,1 had SATA2 and 2 x PCIe2.0 and 2 x PCIe1.0 slots and both FireWire 400 and 800.
The 4,1 and 5,1 were SATA3 with all PCIe2.0 slots and only FireWire800.
I think the 3,1 has been the most versatile for me over the last decade I’ve had it just with connectivity and being able to troubleshoot wide arrays of other macs from it both older and newer.
My best deal getting them was clearing a closed technical school that was going to throw a ton of the old cheese graters out as e-waste. So I got 20 of them for free. A mix of all those behemoths 1,1-5,1.

I had a G5 one of these, same case design, got it used many years ago, 2009 I think. Used it up until I got the late 2012 iMac. Good computer but yes they are big, Mine was under the desk so I made a skate to put it on so I could more easily move it to clean around any try and minimise the dust.

I think you could install something newer than El Capitan! That EFI file is really a nice patch!
It's fairly possible that stuff such as the sound card is not supported in El Capitan. You could definitely look for patches online!

That whole rig is cheaper than a decent PC case, which is what I would have turned it into.
irrespective of how it's used it's still a great project and an interesting look into Apple's engineering; Alienware tries the same thing but ends up making something that's loud, hot and slow.
