The relationship between Melinoë and Scylla is actually so funny to me. On Melinoë's side, It's clear from her dialogue that she does not care about Scylla even a little bit. On a personal level, at least. She fights her because she's in the way, but if Scylla moved somewhere else or Melinoë found a better path to the Underworld, she'd likely never think about her again. Scylla, though? She *obsesses* over Melinoë. She wrote this entire song about how much she Very Very Hates Her Guts, detailing all the specific reasons she hates her more than anything and everything she wants to do to her. She even titled the song after the *exact phrasing* Melinoë used when they first met ("Don't you drown your so-called fans to death?"). I fully believe that once Scylla regenerates from their fights she skulks around her dressing room, bothering Jetty and Roxy with questions about Melinoë and, on nights when she visits the surface instead, demands to know why she didn't come back tonight and what she's off doing that's oh-so-much-more important than her. Her death wasn't his fault and yet he almost liberated her with sheer skill alone if Hades wasn't a dick.
I love how Coral Crown is the song that plays first, especially given how different the lyrics for that one are, like it's a song you wouldn't be all that surprised to hear a siren sing, something they would have written regardless. Makes perfect sense they'd be ready with that one the first time they meet you, it's just another show. Then one encounter with Mel tilts Scylla hard enough to pivot and write the hardest diss track of all time. That fucking rules lmao
The vocal work on this is a fantastic bit of acting; it absolutely nails Scylla's self-centred petulance. At 0:59 you can really hear that she thinks she's come up with the greatest put-down ever, and I love the building childish enthusiasm for all the animals doing violence at 2:02. It sounds like singing this in character must have been such good fun.
I cannot express enough how much I love the character in her singing. Even in Coral Crown, which is much more subdued, certain lines like "Gods and witches cannot tame me" and "All who hear me, prince or pauper" really show her personality. I also like that they made her very middle-school level immature, it reminds me of the literature about her that says her laugh (as she ripped men apart) sounds like that of a young girl.
The most remarkable thing about this is that Scylla and the Sirens managed to come back to life and compose this song in only a few hours before Melinoe shows up again.
"The underworld princess remains ever watchful, for in the depths of Oceanus lie the dreaded singers whose haunting singing serves as a grim reminder of the fate that shall soon follow" "Homer, you are not helping" "Meanwhile, the player prepares to vibe with such melodies, which only further implies the doom of the underworld princess, for one can't help but be controlled by such bangers" "AUGH!!!!"
When I found that scrap of lyrics in Scylla's chambers i just knew something was gonna happen with them. And then it happened. I love this game so much.
They turned up right after having this play for the first time. I can only assume Melinoë's reaction was from her paying more attention to the fight than the lyrics
Honestly it didn’t even dawn on me that the transition room is the siren’s dressing room until I picked up that scrap. Awesome little detail even down to Scylla’s mirror being twice the size of Roxy/Jetty
God I loved that moment. I really wish I could delete my memory of my first playthrough and do it all again... Over and over again until the end of time. Stuff like meeting polyphemus for the first time and realizing what the third boss in the underworld is.
I love how Scylla seems to be losing her temper during the bridge, getting more animated and frenetic as she's imagining Melinoë being abused by the deep, before regaining composure for the refrain.
>Scylla and the Sirens sing amazing prog-rock anthems as they end your run "This brings joy!" >Cronos unpauses your game and kills you while answering the phone "This does not being joy."
@@thecactusman17 Oh yeah absolutely lmao, I hope it doesn't make it into the final game; Chronos isn't too long of a fight, but clearly there's many, many reasons why someone might end up needing to pause during it. I'm sure the intention was to make Chronos feel either really powerful, or like a cheap motherfucker (Because a lot of his attacks are actually like that; see the boomerang toss that throws off your natural dodging instincts, or the scythe swipe with its very odd and kind of disjointed second hitbox), but that's not really a good excuse for punishing players for... having a life, I guess? Maybe this is a too-thorough dissection of a mechanic that's practically a gag in game, so: TL;DR - You shouldn't punish players for needing to pause.
@@meepmopx1841 the most frustrating thing about it was that because I needed to actually stop and cut the audio I couldn't even hear what he was taunting me with as he unpaused the game. Absolutely I want him to mock me while the game is paused, that was a _great_ idea. But my family and my job is not going to be put on hold for a video game.
I would love to see, after Melinoe tells Arachne about it, you get to Scylla only to have an army of spiders show up and wreck them for you, just the once
Avoiding damage from attacks? Sure. Avoiding emotional damage caused by the boss literally insulting my fashion sense in her own boss theme? No can do :(
Can’t even describe how exciting it was having Scylla seemingly off-handedly saying she’d been working on a new song, only to then hear this absolute banger start up! Not sure which song I like more, but the fact that they’re both this good is just incredible.
My favorite part of this is when you take out the rest of the band and it's JUST Scylla's vocals on major prominence while a light tune lingers faintly in the background. I don't know if they recorded multiple tracks for different boss phases, or if the changing audio just highlights it more, but oh my god, the way her voice is just DRIPPING with hatred... chills every time. I have legit held off on finishing the fight JUST to listen to her finish her increasingly unhinged scream list of horrible things she wants to do to me while all her band and everything else lies slain around her and I'm just...vibing in what an amazing work of art this game is... I'ts actually gotten me killed a few times because suddenly a barnacle is flying at me and I'm going "Oh crap! Still gotta dodge!! NOOOooo, I had a good build going! Damn you, Scylla!!!" A +++ Supergiant. YOu're not even finished with the game yet and already, you've done it again.
usually when someone makes this joke it's just a one liner but they actually made an entire song for this one, this kind of effort is why supergiant is the best studio
"Claw out your eyes and drown you to death." Dissing Melinoe with a bopping track. Now I can imagine a battle of lyrics with Deities and other mythological beings associated with floods, water and the watery depths like Hapi, Khnum, Hershaf, Yemoja, the Mami Wata, Agwe and Olokun, for example.
The slow build up to Coral Crown leading to the full verison during the fight, amazing. Knocking out certain band members drops their part from the song. Amazing. RETURNING TO GET A DAMN DISS TRACK? Outstanding, Supergiant are absolute wizards.
scylla after spending an all-nighter feverishly coming up with lyrics and musical arrangements for a diss track aimed at someone she has met three times in her entire life: why are you so obsessed with me??????
LITERALLY, though! this was stuck in my head from the moment I heard it until I actually got there! (Afger picking my jaw up from off the floor because going there for the first time was AMAZINGGGGG)
@princessthyemis agreed. I also noticed after I made the comment that the singing gets more pronounced the lower you go, and that who's singing during the fight changes depending on who you knockout/kill first. Maybe I'm just stupid but I thought it was cool when I noticed those.
Scylla: I wrote a new song it's called: I Am Gonna Claw Out Your Eyes Me: Oh that's a funny on theme piece of dialogue Boss theme: Changes to this song... Ooooooh damn that is clever
I was already floored by this boss the first time I fought them, such an inspired and amazing concept, but to learn they had a second song dedicated to hating on you elevated it even further.
in the tradition of Raphael I do like a villain that sings their own theme song. This one feels like it is on another level though, the ammount of detail and callbacks in this is absurd.
Minor typo in the lyrics description in this TH-cam upload: She actually sings "stomped by hippocampusses" instead of "hippocampus" (actually the plural is "hippocampi", but that would not work as well with the song). Thank you for this insane(ly brilliant) music (and the rest of the OST)!
First run: whoa the lyrics are kinda weird Second run: but the song is catchy Third run: I really shouldn't be liking this Fourth run: must resist..! Fifth run: I AM GONNA CLAW OUT YOUR EEEEEYES
I think it's so cool that you can hear her beckoning song lyrics get louder and louder as you progress through Oceanus. Such a fun character. If I could have one wish from supergiant, it would be for Scylla to have a small album of songs like this she might play when you fight her. Maybe give the band slightly different movesets based on the song playing. Like just a single special move they have per song. Also wouldn't mind just an album, not in the game but irl.
if i had a song for each time a version of Scylla had an absolute banger of a song, I'd have two nickels, which isn't much, but it's strange that it's happened twice (Hades II Scylla and the Epic musical's Scylla)

"The underworld princess remains ever watchful, for in the depths of Oceanus lie the dreaded singers whose haunting singing serves as a grim reminder of the fate that shall soon follow"
"Homer, you are not helping"
"Meanwhile, the player prepares to vibe with such melodies, which only further implies the doom of the underworld princess, for one can't help but be controlled by such bangers"
"AUGH!!!!"
Oh, is that who the narrator is? Been wondering.
@@Techhunter_Talon Yup
Melinoë calls him by name sometimes. I don't remember Zagreus doing that though.
@@ShinSennju neither can I, now that I think about it
@@ShinSennjuZag refered to the narrator as "Old Man". He didn't name drop him as Homer directly.
Darren Korb once again proving he is the king of strange time signatures
When I found that scrap of lyrics in Scylla's chambers i just knew something was gonna happen with them.
And then it happened. I love this game so much.
I found those after and didn't even realize until listening to this here!
Scylla: You are so obsessed
Also Scylla: *Proceeds to drop a diss track on you*
As a huge Scylla and The Sirens fan I am very happy with Melinoe for inspiring them to make new music, even if she is too uncultured to appreciate it
I love how Scylla seems to be losing her temper during the bridge, getting more animated and frenetic as she's imagining Melinoë being abused by the deep, before regaining composure for the refrain.
>Scylla and the Sirens sing amazing prog-rock anthems as they end your run
"This brings joy!"
>Cronos unpauses your game and kills you while answering the phone
"This does not being joy."
The only upside to Chronos's pause-stopping shenanigans is unlocking the upgrade that allows you to pause anyway and hearing him get frustrated.
@@meepmopx1841 It's a really bad mechanic.
Maybe this is a too-thorough dissection of a mechanic that's practically a gag in game, so:
TL;DR - You shouldn't punish players for needing to pause.
@@meepmopx1841 the most frustrating thing about it was that because I needed to actually stop and cut the audio I couldn't even hear what he was taunting me with as he unpaused the game.
Absolutely I want him to mock me while the game is paused, that was a _great_ idea. But my family and my job is not going to be put on hold for a video game.
if anything, you could exit the window which stops the game (for me at least)
i like to think Arachne takes that dress comment personally.
In literally any other game it would be a funny throwaway line, this is why Supergiant are untouchable
The sheer pettiness in these lyrics is amazing.
Damn you, Scylla!!!"
A +++ Supergiant. YOu're not even finished with the game yet and already, you've done it again.
Peak Erin singing, it has so much character in it
usually when someone makes this joke it's just a one liner but they actually made an entire song for this one, this kind of effort is why supergiant is the best studio
Was so happy that this song actually played after Scylla mentions it! I really, really hope they have more songs, they are so catchy 👍
Maybe they'll add one for extreme measures
@@diccchocolate416 lol I was wondering the same thing as well! I hope so
Yeah!!
scylla after spending an all-nighter feverishly coming up with lyrics and musical arrangements for a diss track aimed at someone she has met three times in her entire life: why are you so obsessed with me??????
DAMN IT ROXY
WHAT HAPPENED TO JETTY!?
Night Bloom >:3
We making it back to the House of Hades with this one 🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥
nuh uh :3 🕜⌚⏰
@@thebaseandtriflingcreature174 Yuh huh 🧙♀️🗡⚒️⚡️🌩
LITERALLY, though! this was stuck in my head from the moment I heard it until I actually got there! (Afger picking my jaw up from off the floor because going there for the first time was AMAZINGGGGG)
@princessthyemis agreed. I also noticed after I made the comment that the singing gets more pronounced the lower you go, and that who's singing during the fight changes depending on who you knockout/kill first. Maybe I'm just stupid but I thought it was cool when I noticed those.
Scylla: I wrote a new song it's called: I Am Gonna Claw Out Your Eyes
Me: Oh that's a funny on theme piece of dialogue
Boss theme: Changes to this song...
Ooooooh damn that is clever
I've had this song stuck in my head for 10 days straight.
I AM so obsessed with her.
Absolutely negative chill. You love to see it.
Uhhh, musically this gives me heavy Symphonic/Opera-Metal-Vibes. Awesome!
Almost like a lighter Blackbriar 🖤
@@infractal5033 exactly my thoughts
I didn't expect a SECOND banger, I blame my last death on the Supergiant music team
Same)))
I kept refusing to kill the boss so I could listen to this. Now I can finally leave the second area already!
I was already floored by this boss the first time I fought them, such an inspired and amazing concept, but to learn they had a second song dedicated to hating on you elevated it even further.
The stank put on the word garbage is amazing tbh. Arachne is gonna be pissed!
The Misfits really are out to get Jem this time huh.
Oh shit, Mel even has Jerrica's hair.
I swear bosses who use music in any form as means of attacking will ALWAYS be my favorite type of boss battle
Love how much more expressive and experimental they got with the soundtrack
The Sirens sing songs to die for! Over and over again.
Melinoë dropping death defiance (pt. 3) in response
It makes so much sense that the siren song is this good I’m already enraptured
This boss fight is probably one of the best ever made in game industry
in the tradition of Raphael I do like a villain that sings their own theme song.
This one feels like it is on another level though, the ammount of detail and callbacks in this is absurd.
1:55 for the breakdown.
It’s soooo hot
Seeing the most watched parts of this song slowly go up like a sliding volume bar makes me very happy
Ok I'm already digging this one based on the title alone.
WHO IS THE MADMAN WHO WROTE THIS SONG IN 11/4?!?!
Korb loves him some compound time signatures.
What is that?
@@marpanj1871
If you're referring to the "11/4," that means 11 beats per measure, and each quarter note is one beat.
Legendary fight, one of the best boss fights I've ever played in 25 years. And this track is one of the reasons for that. Beautiful!
Scylla really said "I hate the way you talk, the way you walk, I hate the way that you DRESS"
So I need you to give the sirens more diss tracks in future updates. I need whole concert dedicated to making fun of Melinoë
WE NEVER MAKING IT OUT OF OCEANUS WITH THIS ONE
🗣️ 🔥 🔥 🔥
Genuinely one of my favorite bosses of all time in any game
Minor typo in the lyrics description in this TH-cam upload: She actually sings "stomped by hippocampusses" instead of "hippocampus" (actually the plural is "hippocampi", but that would not work as well with the song).
Thank you for this insane(ly brilliant) music (and the rest of the OST)!
hades has no business being this fun.. i wasn't ready for this
First run: whoa the lyrics are kinda weird
Second run: but the song is catchy
Third run: I really shouldn't be liking this
Fourth run: must resist..!
Fifth run: I AM GONNA CLAW OUT YOUR EEEEEYES
Took 5 runs for you?? I was singing in the second one already
They didn’t have to go this hard! One of my favorite boss fights ever!
Also wouldn't mind just an album, not in the game but irl.
if i had a song for each time a version of Scylla had an absolute banger of a song, I'd have two nickels, which isn't much, but it's strange that it's happened twice
(Hades II Scylla and the Epic musical's Scylla)
"stomped by hippocampuses" Nobody is spitting lyrics like Scylla!
This song has been living rent free in my head since first hearing it a week ago. I’ve died to this boss fight several times because I’ve been jamming out too hard
Pov: you stopped focussing on their attacks and realised they're actually singing a banger
I choose to believe this is Scylla writing a diss track for Melinoe because she can't cope with how she's developing a crush on her
shes just so genuine here
It comes from a very personal place, right? 😂
I was laughing my ass off when the chorus started during the boss fight 😆
gotta add these to Spotify
It might be years, depending on if the early access period lasts as long as the first.
so fucking hyped to hear this banger in game
Me when I'm playing Defect in Slay the Spire
No claw is flaw!
based
I'm trying to learn to sing it from memory, it's so hard to memorise all those fish and how they kill, thanks for something to do Supergiant
Reasons why Scylla and the Sirens are the best artists in the whole Ocean? Their last album comes with a free game when you buy it! Thanks, Scylla 😍
When you make an artist hate you so much she writes this banger, GirlRage™ lmao
I must seem deranged these past few days because I simply cannot stop myself from singing "I am gonna claw out your eyes and drown you to the death!"
Too catchy! Thank you Chlamtsune Miku!
I cannot get over how damn good this is
I hope there’s at least 1 more song by them in the full game 🙏
