  • This is a documentary style video I put together, giving interesting information about the American mink. It compares and contrasts the mink to other members of the weasel family.

Someone I knew was walking along the creek in my city. He saw what he thought was someone's escaped pet ferret. He chased it and cornered it under a bridge. He carried it home, put it in a cage and took it to the humane society. They looked at it and asked him if he still had all his fingers. Because it wasn't a pet ferret. It was a wild mink. They took it back to where he caught it and released it.

I love mustelids. I've kept ferrets and truly loved them. I'm dying to get a mink. They're beautiful and amazing creatures and I'm glad you save them from those horrible fur farms. I wish I could save every one. Thanks for your wonderful videos.

I have personally seen 2 wild mink hunting along the water edge while fishing. I have also seen a wild Wolverine for about 10 seconds while driving over a mountain hwy In New York State. I've been told that they never been seen this far south but I know what I saw. I was about 30 ft away from it while driving and my jaw is still on the ground in disbelief. I know what I saw and it wasn't a small bear. It was a real live wolverine.

i have lived in Massachusetts for over 40 years, & id never seen a wild mink, or fisher cat, or any of the small predatory mammals. just a few days ago, i was taking my daily walk through the woods near my home. i was walking alongside a stream that runs through western MA, and i saw the unmistakable face of an American Mink poking up at the top of a small waterfall. i tried to catch a video for it , but the second it saw me, it dove under water, and swam very fast to what id guess was its den. Keep in mind, in Massachusetts right now, the temperature goes from 50F, down to -20F, and this Mink was in the water. It couldnt be easy, swimming in below freezing water, fishing for crayfish, but it looked very healthy.

I don't know if anyone has ever mentioned this to you yet, Joseph; but you really remind me of Marty Stouffer and his old program called "Great America". From the depth of your explanations, your apparent passion for the animals, even down to your tone of voice and monologue delivery. It's so good a video series that carries on in a similar spirit as that program. Best of luck to your future videos!

I was fishing for Salmon on a tributary of the Spey and only once saw a mink drop into the water straight below it and it came up with a brown trout! That area is wild. I thought I was very fortunate to have seen that. I notice they are excellent swimmers. On another occasion one went into the water and swam right down thorough some bad white water below me. I followed it down and incredibly it surfaced and swam to the other side of the river. What a swimmer =better than myself an ex diver.

Was amazed that the mink which seemed a lot smaller was getting the better of the rabbit because at the time I wasn't sure just what I was witnessing. I felt sorry for the prey animal but never intervened as nature must be left to take her course. Thanks for the informative video, ATB

@@JosephCartertheMinkMan I agree. You're adding a lot to the conservation of nature in this fallen out of old style of hunting turned pest control. It's is or was common in the Netherlands where I'm from. Where waterways are reinforced with reeds and wood, and musk rats do tremendous damage that will turn all of the Netherlands back into swap too if not careful.

I have a question, which I should probably paste on a newer video. How sensitive are mink to loud sounds? Can noise really scare them to death?
I flew A6 Intruders from aircraft carriers; we flew low, fast and loud. During exercises where we flew low over Norway the Navy told us not to fly near mink farms because we'd scare the mink to death. This was fine, we mapped them and treated them like enemy missile sites we had to avoid.
How real was that danger? Do mink get spooked by loud noises?
