    I used to erroneously believe minks also went ermine in the winter due to both being associated with elegant white coats, and incorporated this into a character in one of my comics who was supposed to be an American Mink. Interestingly the color change happens in a lot of other mustelid species, but not as starkly; some martens (Japanese martens in particular, I believe) have _only_ their faces turn white, some change from one shade of brown or gray to a slightly lighter shade but not fully white, and so forth. Changing between a thick winter coat and a thinner summer coat is of course quite common for mammals in general, as any owner of a mid to large sized dog should be aware; those bred in colder climates especially.

    These guys are gorgeous! Robert, you captured the progress of the color change beautifully! Thank you for sharing! 👍☺️💕
    The SCC (seasonal coat color) molt is adaptive in temperate and polar regions where it snows. However, scientists are concerned that climate change will find these animals exhibiting color changes even when warming shortens the snowy season. The coat color changes are also heavily influenced by hormones responding to the photoperiod (changes in the seasonal ratios between daylight and darkness that remains constant every year). So, we'll be witnessing the change to a white coloration even when it fails to snow and this might work to make these guys more prone to predation and decrease their survivability when their white coats contrast starkly with a brownish background. This is another reason to think about how climate changes affect the planet. 🤷‍♀️

    • @susanaquezada7671
      @susanaquezada7671 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But photoperiod is going to be the same, so should not to influence the color changes.

    • @Master_Petes_Theater
      @Master_Petes_Theater 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@susanaquezada7671 Photoperiod will stay the same, but warmer conditions in the winter will bring less snow and the stoats will turn white while the ground stays dark. So the white stoat won't be able to camouflage itself.

      I have shared a little evidence to disprove the above claims about climate change. We should be always caring for the environment and putting it first. However his/her claims about warming in Europe and the UK, shortening winters, is just not true. Purely made up. The opposite is actually true. Colder winters and unexpected cold snaps in unusual times.

    I would also add it seems like perfect camouflage for the animal. The coat is roughly a similar percentage white as is the surrounding environment.
    As said many times, triggered by temperature, which is a great way to make sure the coat is always the right mix of brown and white to stay well camoflagued. A good example of biology, through survival of the fittest (the most easily able to camouflage themselves survive the predators).
    Well that is my opinion on it all.
