Derpy/Muffins/Ditzy/Brighteyes/Whatever she'll be called next, was wall eyed ever since she was a filly. Remember "The Cart before the ponies"? In Rarity's flashback, we saw her win 1st place as a filly, and she was Walleyed. So yes, I believe the best we can say is they tried to give her corrective eye surgery and it didn't work. That's my theory anyway. It's a best guess. :)
Meaning her parents knew she'd go bad from the outset? We know from Flurry Heart's naming that new parents have some time to decide on names for their foals. Carrot and Cup Cake came prepared with very appropriate cake-themed names, but FH was named for an event. Spoiled Milk? I have no idea where that could have come from. But just remember 'Clear Skies' and 'Fluffy Clouds.'
Apparently Spoiled isn't from Ponyville. Else Filthy Rich wouldn't have to introduce her. Also... Milk is a farm product, though from cattle... wonder if she acts so anti-rural to hide her own humbler roots? Still... I see how Filthy and Spoiled go together, both having so unsavory names.
I was thinking that the parents had already died (I mean, Granny is in full control of the farm, which I highly doubt would be the case if the Apple Parents were still alive. Even Granny would eventually bend to the passage of generations), but Applebloom is missing. That leaves me with only two options: The Parents are in some way absent (Work, quest, serious injury, idk) or Applebloom is young enough (0-1 years old) that she would have no ability to even vaguely recall this and would simply be kept in her crib throughout these events. I don't really think Applebloom is adopted. She shares too many physical traits for them to have different genes IMO.

I think the most logical answer is that they are still alive at this time and Apple Bloom has yet to be born. Now the question remains where are the Apple parents? Well, the simple answer is they aren't involved in the farm. Perhaps it is this, the Apple family is on their mothers side. Their father is perhaps an adventure, explorer or remote archeologist caught the attention of a farm girl who was seeking something more than being stuck on the farm. So now they married and set off on adventures in that time they have AJ and Big Mac, since adventuring isn't a place to raise kids they leave them on the farm for Granny to watch over. And also their mother still has an attachment to the farm (you can take the girl out of the farm but can't take the farm out of the girl) Now just fast forward a year or two from this episode and the parents have Apple Bloom and the shortly thereafter are killed in a terrible accident. It would then make sense why AJ is soo protective ofher sister as she was old enough to be taking care of baby AB more full time and the trauma from losing her parents. And in explanation of why they weren't there when AJ got her mark well they were off on work. And camp friendship with rarais after getting her mark and before this episode, she would write rara a good while until Rara makes it in Manehattan which would be around when AJ is caring for toddler Apple Bloom.
Great story, character development of Bigmac and Applejack. Also loved the SHINNING twins (at the end of the hall, you just see them when Granny and Applejack go in search of BigMac) and Durp at the hospital (guess for corrective surgery) But what the hay, “Spoiled Milk? I understand Milk as a last name but SPOIELD, explains why she had to get married to the RICH family. As to Applejack’s parents, they are obviously on a secret mission for Princess Celestia, Deep under cover. Well they could be.

Jacob Carpenter technically speaking here. She did mention in Raiders of the Lost Mark to applebloom. She quoted "if mom and dad were here they be proud" pretty much puts out that they are gone.
I believe if the writers finally decide to tackle AJ's parents, they would best do it in a Cutie Mark Chronicles style episode showing the interactions between all the mane 6 with each of their parents, so not to expend too much time on the ever delicate subject of death.

I still think that their parents are dead; probably sometime shortly after Apple Bloom was born. (Plus it's been hinted before that their parents are indeed dead). No, Applejacks parents are dead by this time. Remember Applejack went to ManeHatton where she got her cutie mark than returned to the farm. Applebloom would be about a year or two old about now, meaning Diamond Tiara is a year or two younger, she just acts older. If she only a year younger than Applebloom, than maybe her parents had to marry. You think Spoiled trapped him.
There is another option. The apple parents are already dead in this issue and applebloom is not born yet. Making her applejacks daughter, raised out of wedlock as her sister as to not bring shame to the parents.

I agree that I was a bit disappointed this wasn't the episode regarding AJ's parents, but what we got was fine on it's own. At least it adds a lot to Applejack and Big Mac as characters.
Given the nature of the episode it's hard to explain the apple parents being MIA. Good evidence that they are already gone at the time of this episode.... before apple bloom was born.... just saying.
Come to think of it... a disease that Granny Smith remembers well enough to describe but (most) others in Ponyville don't? Granny was a filly when she and her parents moved in... before Ponyville existed. So when did Granny Smith come across this disease? Perhaps that disease was what AJ's parents (and Filthy Rich's for that matter, considering Granny mentions talking to his grandfather), pretty much anypony of that age in Ponyville died of? (I doubt Rarity's parents live in Ponyville. They only make an appearance to drop off Sweetie Belle and have never been seen since). Children would have had a mild version, and the elders had immunity from having it in their youth. (This may also have given Granny the idea of spots during her jam-making). Probably Applebloom was in hospital with it, being a baby and all...

Well, if you notice Apple Bloom isn't seen or mentioned in the flash-back either. Maybe the parents weren't around because they were caring for a new born, or that MamaApple was in bed resting and PapaApple was bucking trees as quickly as he could to make some time for an up-and-coming baby. Maybe they were both out in the orchard spraying to prevent more "Apple Blight" from spreading? We never did see AJ, Big Mac, or Granny out working in the orchards. My best bet is: they were working.
I see where you are going. But then again why wouldn't they be there for supper time. Their family has always kept close ties and nothing says close ties more than supper.
I thought of that after I posted my comment. The only thing I can say is Apple Bloom wasn't there either. Not a high chair in sight. Maybe they were at a birthing class? Taking AppleBloom to Gymboree? Or maybe they weren't on the farm at all? Maybe they were off in some sort of daring adventure and Apple Bloom wasn't born in Ponyville? If they have family all over Equestria, who's to say that they weren't at other orchards? Or at the parent-in-laws house? The question can't really be answered because we just don't know enough.

It made me think of movies like The Sandlot and A league of their own...Someone in the present day looking back at crazy Memorable moments of their childhood, AND the fact that Aj is my favorite Pony and whenever her and the rest of her family are on screen I can't help but smile! I expected the Apple parents to be in this because of the title and how it reminded me of the saying "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree", but even though they weren't I still enjoyed this episode a lot.
I don't know if anybody else caught this but AppleBloom is changing. Every now and then her voice stops being as squeaky as normal. Our little Bloom is growing up at last.
Well, MLP is 6 years old now. Of course her voice actress would be a lot older now. Scootaloo is the only CMC whose voice hasn't really changed...for unknown reasons.

If the Apple Parents had shown up, that's all everyone would have talked about, and everything else would have been lost. I think if we are going to learn about them, it has to be in an episode unto itself. Also, do we really want the fanfic writers filling in the blanks as to why Big Mac calls himself "big"? I mean, you know where that setup can go.

I really enjoyed this episode, but more importantly, it made me hungry for more flashback episodes like this. There's so much you learn about the characters in them, and it's just fun to see the world at a different point of time than we normally see. Please, writers! More episodes like this! :D
Well Dr. Wolf, I think that the only thing that Applejack and Big Mac has in their past is the birth of Applebloom. We didn't see their parents so I do think they must be tending at home getting ready for Applebloom to arrive. I guess Spoiled Milk now called Spoiled Rich might be the same when she was pregnant with Diamond Tiara. The light blue pony is not Screwball. Her name is Screwloose. Screwball is the purple pony with swirly eyes and a propeller cap. She has been seen in "Return of Harmony" and "Cutie Remark". I do think and episode that involves Applejack's parents may be as promising like the parents day episode of "Hey Arnold!"
I noticed a very interesting thing in this episode: There is a unicorn in the hospital that has half of his horn bandaged. WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT GUY?! How did half of his horn break off?!
I actually didn't even think about the parents being mentioned at first. I figured it was one of those things that was safe to assume was probably meant to remain a mystery at this point. They've been purposely left out all this time so I can't say I was expecting any mention of them. Regarding the episode, I really enjoyed it actually. I could feel the uneasiness from AppleJack seeing the lies escalating like they did and all the stuff going on in background added to the amusingness of the episode. Good episode. Would watch again.
When Granny Smith came out of the cupboard with all the brooms after big mac was taken for surgery, there were two fillies in the hall behind them, twins, just staring, and holding hooves... that I believe was a Easter egg to the shining.
As a writer II think it's better that the apple parents weren't mentioned. Here's why. 1. as you said living up to fan expectations at this point would be impossible. Everyone has vast ideas on what happened to them, what happened afterwards, and how the family copes. There would be no way to please everyone. I had the same problem with the 100's episode. When the background ponies got canon personalities suddenly a bunch of fanfics and comics and pictures were debunked. This would be even worse for the apple parents as while with background ponies some consistency is present, it's less present with the apple parents. Sometimes it's better to leave things to the fans' imagination. 2. I think by the time the story takes place the parents are long gone. Think about it. Applejack's parents weren't there when Applejack left for Manehatten as a filly. Why would someone's parents not see their little child leave home like that unless...they couldn't. Applejack's parents were gone before she got her cutie mark. That means by the time this story takes place they've been dead for years. it'd be a little odd to have someone bring them up when they had nothing to do with the story itself. 3. One problem this particular show has is that when something happens it tends to steal the show. When ditzy/Derpy/Muffins first spoke "The Last Round up" became famous for that one scene alone and the rest of the story is never brought up. When the adorable Coco pommell first appeared a lot of artists focused on her and less on the fact that Rarity got her Rainbow Connection. I think if Applejack's parents were brought up the rest of the story would have been over similarly overshadowed. I think if the apple parents WERE brought up then it would need to be one that focused on them. I don't think Death should be 100% avoided in Childrens TV. There are good ways to talk about it. Just look at What Seseme Street did with Mr Hooper. But that doesn't mean everytime Applejack's past is brought up we should hope for a mention of her parents.
I can't believe Dr.Wolf missed the Shining Reference in the episode when talking about background snipits. It's when AppleJack is leading Granny down the hall to where Big Mac is in the lecture hall on the gurney. If you look behind them, at the end of the hall are two very familiar looking twins holding hooves. XD
In regards to the still unknown fates of Applejack's parents, keep in mind these are the same writers that have been sitting on Luna and Nightmare Moon for literally six years. As much as we'd all love to see a certain and concrete conclusion in a canonical episode or even a comic, its something that's perhaps best left to the imagination.
Can't forget to point out the Shining Twins in the background of once scene, and the cameo appearances of Nurse Redheart and Raindrops in the stands of the surgical room. Probably a few other cameos of lesser known/recognised BG ponies throughout the hospital too (I bet Nurse Tenderheart is in there somewhere).
I loved the episode, but the one thing I kept wondering is "WHERE THE HECK IS APPLE BLOOM!" I mean if this is before her birth, than not showing the parents is really weird. If it's after, Granny just left a baby alone in the house! Unless... Apple Bloom's adopted?
If they're going to talk about Applejack's parents anywhere, I assume it'll be in the movie because this is a kids cartoon. And even though so many other shows have brought up the concept of death, they're scared to do it here. However, the movie is aimed at an older audience so they could safely get away with it more.
Generally speaking. The lowest rating for kids movies is G. And it's common for adults to go to and enjoy G-rated films. Think of Disney and Pixar. But some people still believe that doesn't apply to TV, so studios feel the need to ignore difficult topics. Because the movie is a theatrical release, they may feel more comfortable talking about death.

My guess is that the Apple parents didn't like farm work. They are more the travelling type. So maybe they left their kids in Granny's care while they travel Equestria and came back when AB was born and then they went to travel more or died. And for those of you who would say that it would make them shitty parents.... people like that exist in real life. Maybe they stayed on the farm until AJ was born and then decided to leave and when they had some "fun" on the road, AB was concieved

All I have to say is yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes YES!!!! A mention of their parents might have been nice, and I really loved the depth we got for both of these characters, but I'm mostly looking forward to having an episode like this for each one of the mane six either going deeper into their Elements of Harmony spirits, like this one did, or another aspect of their personality and around the same age maybe. Because it'd be cool to see all of the mane six's styles for this in between stage.

This episode was just further proof of the Apple family monopoly over cider. The Flim Flam Brothers were warriors of justice and the free market, until the Apples for forced them into a life as conponies.
At the beginnin of the episode, when Granny said AJ once told a lie that ended up bringing tho whole family to the hospital, I tought "Holy crap, AJ is responsible for the death of her parents !". So I was a bit disapointed that they weren't even refered to. I didn't catch Ceerilee, but I did see the two twins girls from Shinning. XD
Applejack learned that when she tells more lies around all the ponies in Ponyville, it only gets her into more trouble until she was trapped with them, she thought a lie can keep her free, but the only way for her to be free from them, was by telling the truth

Well, truth be told, I was hoping to see or hear something on the Apple Parents, but I guess we'll have to wait a little longer for that question to be answered, Dr. Wolf. Still, I generally enjoyed the episode and love this little dive into Applejack and Big Mac's pasts that led to how they behave today.

It's been revealed elsewhere that RD's idol's full name is Daring Do Dazzle and that Twilight Sparkle's mother's name is Twilight Velvet. And the Apple family start off with "Apple" in their names. Have the rules been confirmed anywhere?
As far as Filthy Rich goes in the show and EG movies, I think that's actually quite a profound look at how different cultures and environments shape us. Ponyville is much smaller and the community far closer, so with the Apples around as a good influence and business partner helped keep Filthy Rich and his ancestors decent, but in EG, where we have modern cities and business is probably less personal and more professional the characters grow in different ways. We saw shades of EG Filthy Rich in the flashback of the show, and if not for Granny giving him a good talk to and who knows what else, Filthy Rich may have ended up more like his EG counterpart.
Applejack's parents probably was there just not on screen because Applebloom apparently don't exist in this flash back because if we see a young Rich and Milk with no Diamond Tiara.
I was really frustrated that they didn't mention or show the Apple parents too. Clearly Apple Bloom isn't born yet, so they have to still be alive, or at least around.

Not only is AppleJack's parents absence unexplained, but if they were already dead by this point in the story - where's Apple Bloom? Plus Filthy Rich & Spoiled Milk were engaged & had CLEARLY not conceived Diamond Tiara yet, so there's no reason 2 think Apple Bloom would exist at this point either! Therefore, it would make MORE sense 4 AppleJack's parents 2 b alive at this time - yet they're nowhere 2 b found! Explain writers! EXPLAIN!!!!!!!!
I absolutelly loved they made relationships between AJ and Big Mac and we finally could see Big Mac talk normal and long sentences and not as a joke or get cut off by other ponies. I really wish they let Big Mac say more words than just eyups and nopes just like back in S1 Applebuck season episode where Big Mac got 1st time introduced. I mean he can still be a small talker just don't use it as long runing gag that he can only keep conversations with only 2 words
I don't know about any Hearts and Hooves vibes, but as we've learned from Dungeons and Discords, specifically when Discord transported them to that night club and Big Mac oggled one of the passing waitresses, Big Mac knows a pretty filly when he sees one. And considering this was during a time when he talked more than listened, I'd be willing to say he was just checking Cheerilee out.
Honestly, I never wondered what happened to Applejack's parents, but since you brought it up, I now have to wonder about them. Even if we don't know what happened to them, I guess we're better off not knowing, and leaving it to our imagination. I did like how we learn why Big Macintosh decided to be a pony of few words after the whole predicament.
They can't ignore the fact they are keeping us on the loop about the lack of A.J.'s parents forever. Yes, we got some subtle hint that they died and A.J. was near tears at the moment Apple Bloom was born. But apart from that, we know absolutely 'nothing' about her family anymore than we know about Dash's family. Were they always away a lot and left their kids at Granny's until their eventual deaths had them living with her permanently? Or were they missing on an overseas voyage to a land far away from Equestria and they've not been heard from since? As much as I enjoyed seeing the stories of how Applejack learned to be the honest pony she is today and why we don't hear Big Mac talk as much as he did in this episode, in addition we learn a lot of Granny's backstory... WHEN are we going to know about the parents? What happened?I will say this: If we don't even find out by either Season 7 or the upcoming movie next year... Maybe we'll 'never' find out.
I was kind of hoping for the Apple parents but wasn't really holding my breath. The thing I was really hoping to see, though, at least since the trailer, was even a quick look at the other characters when they were younger.
Something I just realized, and it's something I probably should've realized a long time ago. Even if we assume Spoiled's family might've been something like milk mares (hey, that's a headcanon right there), her cutie mark is basically that she's a gold digger.
I noticed Spoiled Milk has a different muzzle shape to what she had in previous episodes. I think its to show that she had some work done on her muzzle (Nose Job, Muzzle Job?) between now and the future.
This basically confirms Fluttershy is the oldest of the Mane 6(Starlight not included in this case) In this Episode Granny said AppleJack was slightly older than Applebloom in the story.In which she had skinny legs. However during the flashback when they got their cutiemarks Fluttershy was already skinny-legs. Meaning Fluttershy must be the older than all of the Mane 6 at least 1 year. I'm debating whether or not to watch the season finale early... I feel like I should wait till next Saturday, but from the few spoilers I know it's exactly what I want it to be with exactly who I want to be in it. Just writing this has gotten me like ten times for hyped
HEADCANON!: The Apple Parents [Buck Apple and Appleseed] were actually dead by that point, and teenage Fluttershy was babysitting Baby Apple Bloom. Also; we've seen filly Derpy before, and she does have derp-eyes then, derpicdn.net/img/2014/1/31/539452/full.png derpicdn.net/img/2016/8/6/1218514/large.png so my guess was either a failed fix operation or perhaps she tried to fix them herself after getting mercilessly bullied for them. What suprised me was the hint that Applebloom hadn't been born yet. In The Cutie Mark Chronicles, Applejack left home when she was very little for the big city. We have always assumed that the parents were dead at this point as Little Mac and Granny were the only ones we see wishing her off. However this episode shows that the Riches aren't even married yet and Applejack already has her cutie mark. No pony even got a foalsitter before they rushed off to the hospital. Mom and Dad are still around somewhere and neither Mac or AJ take them into account for who will inherit the farm. What kind of ponies were their parents? Certainly not reliable ones if what we've seen is any indication.
maybe this episode is why she left the farm. that the guilt made her feel she didn't deserve to be on the farm anymore and so she left for the city only to discover she was ment to be there
I wanna see more flashback episode from all the mane 6 I wanna see Rarity's family, Rainbow Dash's family, and at least one episode showing all of Twilight's family like her mom and dad and not just her brother and when there isn't a world crisis.
I wasn't disappointed by the lack of parents because I never expected any appearance from them. Despite the second the synopsis was announced everyone jumped up in joy and got too caught up in the moment to actually think if it was possible. My little pony are not allowed to say the word death, nor show or imply it. We previously established that way back in season 1 with a Bird in the hoof. Hasbro ordered the episode to be rewritten as it was originally a story about the death of a pet. All references to the Apple parents being deceased are never outright said. The closest thing we have in the series are two throw away lines. Tanks for the memories, an episode about the grieving process and dealing with death had to be hidden under metaphors. Heck some shows made for teens (like Steven Universe) don't even allow the characters to use the word death. They have to come up with their own code names for stuff like that.
I think it's best we don't see their parents. Expectations too high plus how could they explain their absence in the three times we've seen flashbacks to Applejack's past? This was a great episode, AJ's my favorite so I'm always happy to see more of her. Plus all the Big Mac screen time! It was so funny! Plus we can see how staying quite and listening to others has changed him. He's so wise now. I'd be interested in more flashback episodes in the future. Derpy/Muffins/Ditzy/Brighteyes/Whatever she'll be called next, was wall eyed ever since she was a filly. Remember "The Cart before the ponies"? In Rarity's flashback, we saw her win 1st place as a filly, and she was Walleyed. So yes, I believe the best we can say is they tried to give her corrective eye surgery and it didn't work. That's my theory anyway. It's a best guess. :)

Carrot and Cup Cake came prepared with very appropriate cake-themed names, but FH was named for an event. Spoiled Milk? I have no idea where that could have come from. But just remember 'Clear Skies' and 'Fluffy Clouds.'

Apparently Spoiled isn't from Ponyville. Else Filthy Rich wouldn't have to introduce her. Also... Milk is a farm product, though from cattle... wonder if she acts so anti-rural to hide her own humbler roots? Still... I see how Filthy and Spoiled go together, both having so unsavory names.
I was thinking that the parents had already died (I mean, Granny is in full control of the farm, which I highly doubt would be the case if the Apple Parents were still alive. Even Granny would eventually bend to the passage of generations), but Applebloom is missing. That leaves me with only two options: The Parents are in some way absent (Work, quest, serious injury, idk) or Applebloom is young enough (0-1 years old) that she would have no ability to even vaguely recall this and would simply be kept in her crib throughout these events.
I don't really think Applebloom is adopted. She shares too many physical traits for them to have different genes IMO.

I think the most logical answer is that they are still alive at this time and Apple Bloom has yet to be born. Now the question remains where are the Apple parents? Well, the simple answer is they aren't involved in the farm. Perhaps it is this, the Apple family is on their mothers side. Their father is perhaps an adventure, explorer or remote archeologist caught the attention of a farm girl who was seeking something more than being stuck on the farm. So now they married and set off on adventures in that time they have AJ and Big Mac, since adventuring isn't a place to raise kids they leave them on the farm for Granny to watch over. And also their mother still has an attachment to the farm (you can take the girl out of the farm but can't take the farm out of the girl) Now just fast forward a year or two from this episode and the parents have Apple Bloom and the shortly thereafter are killed in a terrible accident. It would then make sense why AJ is soo protective ofher sister as she was old enough to be taking care of baby AB more full time and the trauma from losing her parents.
And in explanation of why they weren't there when AJ got her mark well they were off on work. And camp friendship with rarais after getting her mark and before this episode, she would write rara a good while until Rara makes it in Manehattan which would be around when AJ is caring for toddler Apple Bloom.
I was surprised because I initially believed that they would end up injured and needing medical treatment, hence them needing to go to the hospital.

Also loved the SHINNING twins (at the end of the hall, you just see them when Granny and Applejack go in search of BigMac) and Durp at the hospital (guess for corrective surgery) But what the hay, “Spoiled Milk? I still think that their parents are dead; probably sometime shortly after Apple Bloom was born. (Plus it's been hinted before that their parents are indeed dead). My new headcanons has to be with Derpy though, I thought that was interesting.
No, Applejacks parents are dead by this time. Remember Applejack went to ManeHatton where she got her cutie mark than returned to the farm. Applebloom would be about a year or two old about now, meaning Diamond Tiara is a year or two younger, she just acts older. If she only a year younger than Applebloom, than maybe her parents had to marry. You think Spoiled trapped him.
There is another option. The apple parents are already dead in this issue and applebloom is not born yet. Making her applejacks daughter, raised out of wedlock as her sister as to not bring shame to the parents.
Don't know how much this holds, but the interview does state that AJ's parents are dead and the possibility that we might get some closure on that in the future.

I agree that I was a bit disappointed this wasn't the episode regarding AJ's parents, but what we got was fine on it's own. At least it adds a lot to Applejack and Big Mac as characters.
Given the nature of the episode it's hard to explain the apple parents being MIA. Good evidence that they are already gone at the time of this episode.... before apple bloom was born.... just saying.

Come to think of it... a disease that Granny Smith remembers well enough to describe but (most) others in Ponyville don't? Granny was a filly when she and her parents moved in... before Ponyville existed. So when did Granny Smith come across this disease? Perhaps that disease was what AJ's parents (and Filthy Rich's for that matter, considering Granny mentions talking to his grandfather), pretty much anypony of that age in Ponyville died of? (I doubt Rarity's parents live in Ponyville. They only make an appearance to drop off Sweetie Belle and have never been seen since). Children would have had a mild version, and the elders had immunity from having it in their youth. (This may also have given Granny the idea of spots during her jam-making). Probably Applebloom was in hospital with it, being a baby and all...
What if AJ and Big Mac's parents had Applebloom while they were traveling Equestria and something happened as they were coming home:?

Well, if you notice Apple Bloom isn't seen or mentioned in the flash-back either.
Maybe the parents weren't around because they were caring for a new born, or that MamaApple was in bed resting and PapaApple was bucking trees as quickly as he could to make some time for an up-and-coming baby. Maybe they were both out in the orchard spraying to prevent more "Apple Blight" from spreading? We never did see AJ, Big Mac, or Granny out working in the orchards.
My best bet is: they were working.
I see where you are going. But then again why wouldn't they be there for supper time. Their family has always kept close ties and nothing says close ties more than supper.
I thought of that after I posted my comment. The only thing I can say is Apple Bloom wasn't there either. Not a high chair in sight. Maybe they were at a birthing class? Taking AppleBloom to Gymboree? Or maybe they weren't on the farm at all? Maybe they were off in some sort of daring adventure and Apple Bloom wasn't born in Ponyville? If they have family all over Equestria, who's to say that they weren't at other orchards? Or at the parent-in-laws house?
The question can't really be answered because we just don't know enough.

It made me think of movies like The Sandlot and A league of their own...Someone in the present day looking back at crazy Memorable moments of their childhood, AND the fact that Aj is my favorite Pony and whenever her and the rest of her family are on screen I can't help but smile! I expected the Apple parents to be in this because of the title and how it reminded me of the saying "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree", but even though they weren't I still enjoyed this episode a lot.
I don't know if anybody else caught this but AppleBloom is changing. Every now and then her voice stops being as squeaky as normal. Our little Bloom is growing up at last.

An excellent, well written episode with not too much backstory revealed. The writers probably want to save as much as they can for future stories.
If the Apple Parents had shown up, that's all everyone would have talked about, and everything else would have been lost. I think if we are going to learn about them, it has to be in an episode unto itself.
Also, do we really want the fanfic writers filling in the blanks as to why Big Mac calls himself "big"? I mean, you know where that setup can go.
I think Animelodie had the best answer to the question of where AJ's parents are this episode. I quote:

I think it was an attempt to fix derpy's eyes as in season 7 you see her slowly getting worse and she's quite a bit younger.
Spoiled Rich's maiden name explains so much. And she only looks slightly better pre-nose job.
I really enjoyed this episode, but more importantly, it made me hungry for more flashback episodes like this. There's so much you learn about the characters in them, and it's just fun to see the world at a different point of time than we normally see.

Well Dr. Wolf, I think that the only thing that Applejack and Big Mac has in their past is the birth of Applebloom. We didn't see their parents so I do think they must be tending at home getting ready for Applebloom to arrive. I guess Spoiled Milk now called Spoiled Rich might be the same when she was pregnant with Diamond Tiara. The light blue pony is not Screwball. Her name is Screwloose. Screwball is the purple pony with swirly eyes and a propeller cap. She has been seen in "Return of Harmony" and "Cutie Remark". I do think and episode that involves Applejack's parents may be as promising like the parents day episode of "Hey Arnold!"

I noticed a very interesting thing in this episode:
There is a unicorn in the hospital that has half of his horn bandaged.
WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT GUY?! How did half of his horn break off?!
I actually didn't even think about the parents being mentioned at first. I figured it was one of those things that was safe to assume was probably meant to remain a mystery at this point. They've been purposely left out all this time so I can't say I was expecting any mention of them. Regarding the episode, I really enjoyed it actually. I could feel the uneasiness from AppleJack seeing the lies escalating like they did and all the stuff going on in background added to the amusingness of the episode. Good episode. Would watch again.

When Granny Smith came out of the cupboard with all the brooms after big mac was taken for surgery, there were two fillies in the hall behind them, twins, just staring, and holding hooves... that I believe was a Easter egg to the shining.
As a writer II think it's better that the apple parents weren't mentioned. Here's why.
1. as you said living up to fan expectations at this point would be impossible. Everyone has vast ideas on what happened to them, what happened afterwards, and how the family copes. There would be no way to please everyone. I had the same problem with the 100's episode. When the background ponies got canon personalities suddenly a bunch of fanfics and comics and pictures were debunked. This would be even worse for the apple parents as while with background ponies some consistency is present, it's less present with the apple parents. Sometimes it's better to leave things to the fans' imagination.
2. I think by the time the story takes place the parents are long gone. Think about it. Applejack's parents weren't there when Applejack left for Manehatten as a filly. Why would someone's parents not see their little child leave home like that unless...they couldn't. Applejack's parents were gone before she got her cutie mark. That means by the time this story takes place they've been dead for years. it'd be a little odd to have someone bring them up when they had nothing to do with the story itself.
3. One problem this particular show has is that when something happens it tends to steal the show. When ditzy/Derpy/Muffins first spoke "The Last Round up" became famous for that one scene alone and the rest of the story is never brought up. When the adorable Coco pommell first appeared a lot of artists focused on her and less on the fact that Rarity got her Rainbow Connection. I think if Applejack's parents were brought up the rest of the story would have been over similarly overshadowed. I think if the apple parents WERE brought up then it would need to be one that focused on them.
I don't think Death should be 100% avoided in Childrens TV. There are good ways to talk about it. Just look at What Seseme Street did with Mr Hooper. But that doesn't mean everytime Applejack's past is brought up we should hope for a mention of her parents.
I can't believe Dr.Wolf missed the Shining Reference in the episode when talking about background snipits. It's when AppleJack is leading Granny down the hall to where Big Mac is in the lecture hall on the gurney. If you look behind them, at the end of the hall are two very familiar looking twins holding hooves. XD

In regards to the still unknown fates of Applejack's parents, keep in mind these are the same writers that have been sitting on Luna and Nightmare Moon for literally six years.
As much as we'd all love to see a certain and concrete conclusion in a canonical episode or even a comic, its something that's perhaps best left to the imagination.
Can't forget to point out the Shining Twins in the background of once scene, and the cameo appearances of Nurse Redheart and Raindrops in the stands of the surgical room. Probably a few other cameos of lesser known/recognised BG ponies throughout the hospital too (I bet Nurse Tenderheart is in there somewhere).
I hope that in a future episode, it will revolve around applebloom and her feelings on not having parents. Like "parents day" from hey Arnold
I loved the episode, but the one thing I kept wondering is "WHERE THE HECK IS APPLE BLOOM!" I mean if this is before her birth, than not showing the parents is really weird. If it's after, Granny just left a baby alone in the house!

If they're going to talk about Applejack's parents anywhere, I assume it'll be in the movie because this is a kids cartoon. And even though so many other shows have brought up the concept of death, they're scared to do it here. However, the movie is aimed at an older audience so they could safely get away with it more.

The lowest rating for kids movies is G. And it's common for adults to go to and enjoy G-rated films. Think of Disney and Pixar. But some people still believe that doesn't apply to TV, so studios feel the need to ignore difficult topics. Because the movie is a theatrical release, they may feel more comfortable talking about death.

So maybe they left their kids in Granny's care while they travel Equestria and came back when AB was born and then they went to travel more or died. And for those of you who would say that it would make them shitty parents.... people like that exist in real life. Maybe they stayed on the farm until AJ was born and then decided to leave and when they had some "fun" on the road, AB was concieved

All I have to say is yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes YES!!!! A mention of their parents might have been nice, and I really loved the depth we got for both of these characters, but I'm mostly looking forward to having an episode like this for each one of the mane six either going deeper into their Elements of Harmony spirits, like this one did, or another aspect of their personality and around the same age maybe. Because it'd be cool to see all of the mane six's styles for this in between stage.

This episode was just further proof of the Apple family monopoly over cider. The Flim Flam Brothers were warriors of justice and the free market, until the Apples for forced them into a life as conponies.

At the beginnin of the episode, when Granny said AJ once told a lie that ended up bringing tho whole family to the hospital, I tought "Holy crap, AJ is responsible for the death of her parents !". So I was a bit disapointed that they weren't even refered to.

Applejack learned that when she tells more lies around all the ponies in Ponyville, it only gets her into more trouble until she was trapped with them, she thought a lie can keep her free, but the only way for her to be free from them, was by telling the truth

Well, truth be told, I was hoping to see or hear something on the Apple Parents, but I guess we'll have to wait a little longer for that question to be answered, Dr. Wolf. Still, I generally enjoyed the episode and love this little dive into Applejack and Big Mac's pasts that led to how they behave today.

It's been revealed elsewhere that RD's idol's full name is Daring Do Dazzle and that Twilight Sparkle's mother's name is Twilight Velvet. And the Apple family start off with "Apple" in their names. Have the rules been confirmed anywhere?
As far as Filthy Rich goes in the show and EG movies, I think that's actually quite a profound look at how different cultures and environments shape us. Ponyville is much smaller and the community far closer, so with the Apples around as a good influence and business partner helped keep Filthy Rich and his ancestors decent, but in EG, where we have modern cities and business is probably less personal and more professional the characters grow in different ways. We saw shades of EG Filthy Rich in the flashback of the show, and if not for Granny giving him a good talk to and who knows what else, Filthy Rich may have ended up more like his EG counterpart.
Applejack's parents probably was there just not on screen because Applebloom apparently don't exist in this flash back because if we see a young Rich and Milk with no Diamond Tiara.
I was really frustrated that they didn't mention or show the Apple parents too. Clearly Apple Bloom isn't born yet, so they have to still be alive, or at least around.

Plus Filthy Rich & Spoiled Milk were engaged & had CLEARLY not conceived Diamond Tiara yet, so there's no reason 2 think Apple Bloom would exist at this point either! Therefore, it would make MORE sense 4 AppleJack's parents 2 b alive at this time - yet they're nowhere 2 b found!

I absolutelly loved they made relationships between AJ and Big Mac and we finally could see Big Mac talk normal and long sentences and not as a joke or get cut off by other ponies. I really wish they let Big Mac say more words than just eyups and nopes just like back in S1 Applebuck season episode where Big Mac got 1st time introduced. I mean he can still be a small talker just don't use it as long runing gag that he can only keep conversations with only 2 words
I don't know about any Hearts and Hooves vibes, but as we've learned from Dungeons and Discords, specifically when Discord transported them to that night club and Big Mac oggled one of the passing waitresses, Big Mac knows a pretty filly when he sees one. And considering this was during a time when he talked more than listened, I'd be willing to say he was just checking Cheerilee out.
Honestly, I never wondered what happened to Applejack's parents, but since you brought it up, I now have to wonder about them. Even if we don't know what happened to them, I guess we're better off not knowing, and leaving it to our imagination. I did like how we learn why Big Macintosh decided to be a pony of few words after the whole predicament.
They can't ignore the fact they are keeping us on the loop about the lack of A.J.'s parents forever. Yes, we got some subtle hint that they died and A.J. was near tears at the moment Apple Bloom was born. But apart from that, we know absolutely 'nothing' about her family anymore than we know about Dash's family. Were they always away a lot and left their kids at Granny's until their eventual deaths had them living with her permanently? Or were they missing on an overseas voyage to a land far away from Equestria and they've not been heard from since? As much as I enjoyed seeing the stories of how Applejack learned to be the honest pony she is today and why we don't hear Big Mac talk as much as he did in this episode, in addition we learn a lot of Granny's backstory... WHEN are we going to know about the parents? What happened?I will say this: If we don't even find out by either Season 7 or the upcoming movie next year... Maybe we'll 'never' find out.

I was kind of hoping for the Apple parents but wasn't really holding my breath. The thing I was really hoping to see, though, at least since the trailer, was even a quick look at the other characters when they were younger.
Something I just realized, and it's something I probably should've realized a long time ago.
Even if we assume Spoiled's family might've been something like milk mares (hey, that's a headcanon right there), her cutie mark is basically that she's a gold digger.
I noticed Spoiled Milk has a different muzzle shape to what she had in previous episodes. I think its to show that she had some work done on her muzzle (Nose Job, Muzzle Job?) between now and the future.
This basically confirms Fluttershy is the oldest of the Mane 6(Starlight not included in this case)
In this Episode Granny said AppleJack was slightly older than Applebloom in the story.In which she had skinny legs.
However during the flashback when they got their cutiemarks Fluttershy was already skinny-legs.
Meaning Fluttershy must be the older than all of the Mane 6 at least 1 year.

I'm debating whether or not to watch the season finale early... I feel like I should wait till next Saturday, but from the few spoilers I know it's exactly what I want it to be with exactly who I want to be in it. Just writing this has gotten me like ten times for hyped
HEADCANON!: The Apple Parents [Buck Apple and Appleseed] were actually dead by that point, and teenage Fluttershy was babysitting Baby Apple Bloom.
Also; we've seen filly Derpy before, and she does have derp-eyes then,

so my guess was either a failed fix operation or perhaps she tried to fix them herself after getting mercilessly bullied for them.

What suprised me was the hint that Applebloom hadn't been born yet. In The Cutie Mark Chronicles, Applejack left home when she was very little for the big city. We have always assumed that the parents were dead at this point as Little Mac and Granny were the only ones we see wishing her off. However this episode shows that the Riches aren't even married yet and Applejack already has her cutie mark. No pony even got a foalsitter before they rushed off to the hospital. Mom and Dad are still around somewhere and neither Mac or AJ take them into account for who will inherit the farm. What kind of ponies were their parents? Certainly not reliable ones if what we've seen is any indication.
I think the bandage over Derpy's eyes was a failed attempt to fix it. Mainly because she was still wall-eyed in the flashback in Pinkie Pride.
When Apple bloom said that Applejack never lies, did anybody else yelled "Party of One!" at their tv?
maybe this episode is why she left the farm. that the guilt made her feel she didn't deserve to be on the farm anymore and so she left for the city only to discover she was ment to be there
I wanna see more flashback episode from all the mane 6 I wanna see Rarity's family, Rainbow Dash's family, and at least one episode showing all of Twilight's family like her mom and dad and not just her brother and when there isn't a world crisis.
I think this works best in the building aspect
I wasn't disappointed by the lack of parents because I never expected any appearance from them. Despite the second the synopsis was announced everyone jumped up in joy and got too caught up in the moment to actually think if it was possible.
My little pony are not allowed to say the word death, nor show or imply it. We previously established that way back in season 1 with a Bird in the hoof. Hasbro ordered the episode to be rewritten as it was originally a story about the death of a pet.
All references to the Apple parents being deceased are never outright said. The closest thing we have in the series are two throw away lines. Tanks for the memories, an episode about the grieving process and dealing with death had to be hidden under metaphors.
Heck some shows made for teens (like Steven Universe) don't even allow the characters to use the word death. They have to come up with their own code names for stuff like that.

I think it's best we don't see their parents. Expectations too high plus how could they explain their absence in the three times we've seen flashbacks to Applejack's past?
This was a great episode, AJ's my favorite so I'm always happy to see more of her. Plus all the Big Mac screen time! It was so funny! Plus we can see how staying quite and listening to others has changed him. He's so wise now.
I'd be interested in more flashback episodes in the future.

She may have went to the Hospital to have some surgery done on her eyes.Just What If Derpy had just lost her eye and What If Derpy has a glass eye for the remainder of the whole time which is misaligned thus makes Derpy look that way.Anything is a possibility.
