Hi i am 13 yars old and i started skimboarding last year with a wooden made skimboard i learned sone tricks and now i want to catch some waves what board should i buy please answer
This video inspired me to start skimboarding… in my mid-40’s. Six weeks, several minor sprains and countless scrapes & bruises later, and I made it out to a wave for the first time this morning. I wish I’d started years ago, but better late than never. Thanks, Blair.
I'm 61 and started today by waxing the bottom of my new board OOPS. One bad fall and a little sore in the wrist, but i did get two good rides of 1 foot each!
I didn't know the dry sand training trick shown in this video (I didn't know shit about skim boards really🤤) and I didn't have wax today. But that looks like it works at a speed, that I'd be cool with trying for the first time. On the wet sand u sprint and jump on. because if u run to slow the board will just plant in the sand and wont work. Anyway, I tried for the first time tobay and it's harder then it looks and has about a 99% beginner injury rate. I'm 42, kinda athletic, kids are 16 & 17 and it was tuff. I think theirs other shit that's just as fun without the high injury risk.
First time I saw skimboarding was when I was 14 in 1983.... I thought it was pure magic and the greatest thing ever! The guys I watched said they made their boards at school in woodshop.
I was skimboarding and making my own boards in 1983.... There were no foam boards til late 80s, and to do the one-step you were good! We just threw the board down and jumped on within a few steps though. My best board was a WilsonArt (Formica) bottomed Victoria shape. It was FAST and I shredded! My first ones were half-inch plywood with polyester resin like the old Victorias. My first was a round one 26 inches across. 10 speed bike tire. Yeah that was about right, I said as I stood in it. I taught myself at Scripps pier on the flats but mainly I was at Santa Cruz and Aptos. I even built a jig to bend the nose up after soaking the first 8 inches in water for a week. I also had KILLER paint jobs with colored resins. So great to watch the Joog Squad in action and GREAT instructions. KEEP UP THE GREAT VIDS!!
The fact that he emphasises how important it is to drop your board correctly shouldn’t negate how incredible a surfer this guy actually is. 1000’s of hours of gone into getting to that level of competence in actual wave riding.
Blair has some serious skills...I have been skimming mostly flatland for 30 years...I am in my 40's and am just now pursuing this method so I can get out to the waves and ride them back in. Thanks for putting these tutorials out...learn from the best...that's my plan.
I lost it when he said “you run as fast as you want to fall” haha very true... but very good... keep them coming... I need to learn it all... yes.. even the hair flip
Skid Kids sa-weet!!! Different styles of hair flips please... like wet hair... dry hair flips and do you also throw sand on the hair on a windy day to control the flip... haha... easy to support something so dope... love it all... so much information but it’s all sooo good... looking forward to more!🤙🏽
Hey Blair, I ordered myself yesterday the most beautiful Blairacuda. I'm so excited to start skimboardind after a brake of about 23 years or more. Thank you Blair, for being an inspiration for other people to go out and try nice things. God bless you greatly.
I haven't used my skimboard since the 1990's! Things have definitely changed! Still have my original fiberglass, foam core board. And I remember using my friend wooden board, lol, literally a wood board...
I used to watch this video when I first started skim boarding and now I own the black exile in this video and its crazy and how it went from California to florid to Alabama
I’ve been skim boarding for a few months and I love watching videos like this and instead of starting learning how to drop my board on sand I did it on carpet before I had used it
Before I saw some of your videos, I didn't know this was a thing, now I cant stop watching them and I want to learn! Thanks for taking the time to show us the basics, invaluable! Im a proud subscriber to Skid Kids! East coast, Long Beach...
Awesome tutorial man, I moved to Maui 9 months ago and have been learning skimming at Big Beach. I learned more watching this video than I have from anyone there, thank you.
DUDE! this was a great video. I hope you continue to make these how to videos. I'm in my mid 30s and I only get to the beach once a year. I don't have the community that has all this information. I bought a board years ago and I had some success when i would go each year to the beach, but I couldn't quite figure some stuff out. So many of my questions have been solved by this short video. Please please, continue to produce these. The information is great and you made it super accessible and easy to understand. I would love to learn anything you would like to share!
I was skimming in like 1986 but we were at Puget Sound washington at tacoma. Not the same, just some sections of thin water and muddy sand. Had no clue back then that with a bigger better board you could catch a wave, so incredible.
Great detail, interesting the way you hold you board slightly crooked while you run, then give it a little turn as it drops. It would be great to see more on wave timing on different kinds of waves would be very helpful. Thanks
I am so homesick. I was born in So Cal and have had to move. You make me feel like home. I wanted all my life to surf. When I FINALLY get home, I want to learn to do this. I am going to continue to watch for pointers. Then mabey lessons when I arrive.
Tonight I was practicing at Juanita Beach on the shores of Lake Washington. I was trying to increase the speed of my run and drop. So, there I go at a good trot, drop the board, step on, and I catch a spot of dry sand. Freeze frame a millisecond later, spreadeagled in the air, and suddenly I hear Blair's voice in my head: "you want to run as fast as you want to fall." Unfreeze, fall to the beach, execute a perfect tuck and roll, smooth exit, and as I'm walking back to my board, I think "Good advice, Blair... good advice." :-D

Thanks for making my day. I was looking for something fun for the kids and after watching your video, we bought two boards today and after numerous tries the kids succeeded with their first runs. Thanks again for the great tutorial!
That was the best how to video on learning to skimboard I have seen. Thanks! Tried when I was a kid, but falling on the sand was too tough on me. Wet sand is hard!! Now I'm 50 and have a skimboard I use kiting. Your tips have me thinking I might be able to learn skimboarding. Going to watch this video more times.
Love it man. Just moved to SoCal from TX and as soon as I can get my balls acclimated to this freezing ass water, I’ll totally be giving this a go. Have zero doubt it’s taken all 18 of those years to reach your level, but appreciate you stepping down and sharing your knowledge with us mere earthlings! Get such a kick out of watching your vids and can’t wait to bump into you at the beach brother! Take care
This is excellent. Time to go and dislocate my knees. Oh how I wish youtube was around when I was a child! I always used the 25 step technique growing up, throw the board miles ahead, sprint as fast as possible to catch up and the launch two footed on to the board and hope for the best

Many times a pro will either not understand the challenges that a beginner faces, or else just has no patience for methodically covering the basics. Thanks for a great, useful vid.
Just got some skimboards and i cannot wait to learn how to skim thanks to this viddy. Really hoping my longboarding skills come in handy. Thanks for the tips
Sick tutorial. If i was just starting this would have helped a lot. I think a really helpful video would be teaching how to do a cutback or whatever its called. You know, where you hit the lip and ride it back in. Anyway, keep the videos pumping.
THIS is your best tutorial 👍I think. For someone who knows nothing such as myself. I just need to get a skim board. I'm a skateboarder and I'm so excited!
Just got to the beach. Got a $40 skimboard from Walmart. This’ll be interesting EDIT: Fist day was awesome but wiped out a lot. The thing I struggled with most was keeping enough momentum once I jumped on the board to keep the board going because when I hopped on the thing just sunk
I live in Indiana but I visit Myrtle Beach occasionally so I’ve kinda skimboarded for a few years but never learned much. But now I’ve just graduated high school and I’ve been doing longboard dancing/freestyle for about a year now so I finally decided to learn how to skimboard! I’m able to ride out into the waves and kinda power slide up onto them and ride a little bit (day one). And I can do 180s as well as these weird 180s where I’ll start the spin regular then I’ll put one finger in the side and slide the board around and it kinda looks neat. Can’t wait to learn more! Gonna have to try to find some spots back home in Indiana but I’m stoked
Thank you Blair! On quarantine here in Clearwater and our 10 year old daughter showed an interest in learning to skim. So we pulled up you videos and will be taking our skim board put of our quiver to go out and try. Best PE distance class Eva!

I live on the east coast in Maryland so I started skateboarding while up there. I really wanted to try surfing and skim boarding so my parents got me a board for both while we were in North Carolina. I had no clue how to start but your video helped so much!! Thank you!!
I haven't been in the ocean since I was 4 years old. But watching your Videos made me see how cool skimboarding actually is. Great instructional. 👍 I've only surfed powdered snow since 1988. So this looks like fun..
This was a great how-to man. I didn’t realize you could ride the waves back in…I’ve been going to Maryland and NC beaches for years and have only seen kids skimming across the thin shore breaks. I need to get me a better board!! Mine is like 10 years old, and damn near flat as a pancake

Nice job teaching Blair! I'm not a young buck anymore, but that looks like a lot of fun, and SoCal beaches are only 30 minutes away. Thanks!
can you make a video on how to drop on water? If you have already have than can you send me the link? Thanks
We have not made one yet but we will most definitely in the near future. THanks for the support!

You know he's elite when he practices on an empty beach with no one else around to bother him
Im ur trainee right now. By your vlog i will learn . Thank's champ
5:12 *adds his own soundtrack while skimming* :) (or was that the cameraman?)
Brooo... 😭😭😭
First video I have ever seen about learning this!! AWESOME JOB!
I learned to skim board on jenesse beach in new Hampshire. That place is as flat as a pancake. Like you can quite literally go for hundreds of feet in one throw
Lucky one of the only places I can skim is my grandparents and it is so sloped and hard to ride
started surfing after a friend gave me a board passed to friends, buying a skim board and my kids as well, we love the island life here in south FL and couldn't imagine anything different for us
Appreciate the vid catering left handed people 🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼
I live on the east coast in Maryland so I started skateboarding while up there. I really wanted to try surfing and skim boarding so my parents got me a board for both while we were in North Carolina. I had no clue how to start but your video helped so much!! Thank you!!
Update for this, I have some scars now but I can say that I am doing pretty good 🥳 this video was so helpful
How to pick out a good skim board ? Don’t live by a beach just lakes that I would like to skim board ... thanks great video !!
Zap skimboards
Such a down to earth guy despite his accomplishments. Thank you!
Were's all my goofy's at?!
Yes skating goofy is live i want to learn skimboarding too but i am from austria
San-Mari Geldenhuys I’m goofy
San-Mari Geldenhuys I think it's goofy to be regular
Wait so if you are right footed you put it on the back of the board
Me I surf and skim
I haven't been in the ocean since I was 4 years old. But watching your Videos made me see how cool skimboarding actually is. Great instructional. 👍 I've only surfed powdered snow since 1988. So this looks like fun..
heyyy blair Nice video and nice explain 🇧🇷
Appreciate it!!
Wow that’s so awesome my son was saying he wants a skimboard and I had no idea what it was. So cool
This guy looks like he never ages he’ll be 76 and look the same
This was a great how-to man. I didn’t realize you could ride the waves back in…I’ve been going to Maryland and NC beaches for years and have only seen kids skimming across the thin shore breaks. I need to get me a better board!! Mine is like 10 years old, and damn near flat as a pancake
Cooler than surfing imo
That black exile and the swallow tail are sick!! I’m a surfer don’t really do much skimming but enjoy your videos yeeew
Synth song is called Zero Gravity by ELFL
Watching couple days now your vids.. Made me buy 1 myself really stocked for it to arrive!!
I wish I woulda seen this before I ran full speed and sprained my hand 😂
This looks really fun. This is on my bucket list of things I want to learn.
where is the place? Will visit from Germany!
I didn’t even know this existed so idk why i watched this but now I know how to drop the board if I ever decide to try this out!
Will this still work with one of those cheap wooden skim boards?
