    “Rogueport, while not as memorable as Toad Town-“ exCUSE ME

    • @matesafranka6110
      @matesafranka6110 5 ปีที่แล้ว +106

      Agreed. My main problem with the original PM was that, while it had a lot of charm, almost nothing about the story or the characters was particularly memorable. TTYD just oozes personality from every pixel.

      I like Rogueport, but Toad Town is just tops for me. Personal preference, and probably nostalgia lol
      I will say Rogueport's buildings/aesthetic all blend together and I liked how PM64 utilized Toad Town and the sewers better toward the story

    • @garygamer4506

      I was thinking the same thing. Toad Town is just a suburb where everything is pastel and family friendly. Although the underground news bulletin on the back of the regular one does add a bit of personality. Rogueport, on the other hand, is a place of complex characters, with struggles and questionable ethics that makes them lively and memorable. It's even got a gallows in the town square, and warring gangs controlling different parts of the town. I will say that I love the soundtrack of both towns, but once again, the life and adventurous ambiguity of the Rogueport theme sets it apart.

      I agree, Rogueport is probably my favorite Mario RPG town. It has so much personality between the slums and the rich parky place and the sewers and all the alleys and secrets So many characters with interesting sidequests, and great music too. Toad Town is fine, but it's not very unique.

    • @AHeckman118
      @AHeckman118 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you're considering just the "town" portions of TT and Rogueport, I'd have the same reaction. But, if we're adding the sewer system into the mix, I think it's a hell of a lot more even. Rogueport just didn't have as much going on in its sewer.
      I'm also super nostalgic about OG Paper Mario though, so that's probably not helping my impartiality.

    The Cortez fight is one of my favorite gaming memories. I was 11 or 12 at the time when it came out and did not understand the concept of grinding in RPGs. I fought Cortez for hours and hours with no avail. His sword attacks were just too much for me. But there was one battle where I was able to pull of 5 perfect counters. The battle raged on and on until Cortez was down to 12 health and I was down to 1 hp with no items remaining. I had 2 shine sprites in the slots. I attack Cortez first and pull off the stylish move. The slots begin to spin and I can feel my heart beating so fast. I hit the A button. Boom! My first ever triple shine. I screamed so loud that my parents thought that I had hurt myself. With full health, I slayed Cortez and thus ended a magnificent battle.

      I still remember my younger sister getting to shadow queen years ago. She lost the first time, so we give it another go... Mario was down to a few HP, so we had to play it smart. She accidentally hits A while hovering over a HONEY SYRUP, so we get 5 FP and are doomed to die. Shadow Queen uses that dark wave move, with the really obscure defense window -- and somehow my sister presses B and gets the Super Guard! She went on to win that fight, and that was the best super guard of all-time, as far as I'm concerned.

    In my opinion, Paper Mario TTYD is better than it predecessor. It raises the stakes further. The battle system has that unpredictability aspect to it that makes every battle fresh.
    The writing is also more intense and more humorous. The first game writing felt more story book ish with everyone being cutesy and serious. TTYD I feel is way more "out there". More emotional, more funnier, more weirder, more darker, more real, and it feels like the developers went all out not holding anything back. If they want to make a computer fall in love with a princess, they'll do it. If they want to make the main hub world a dangerous place full of criminals, they'll do it. If they want to make some asshole take your body and steal your entire party members leaving you helpless, they'll do it. TTYD has so many twists and turns that it totally blows the first game out of the water.
    SPM did this too and I like it for that too, but I'll save that for when you talk about that game.
    Unfortunately the series went from taking risk to playing it safe with using basic Mario aesthetics and characters. The writing in the newer games feel safe and boring. Color Splash try to make it work, but half of the time, it just doesn't work. You can't use Toads and Shyguys only and expect the same result like TTYD with its variety of design. You just can't do it.

    • @TinyGuy97
      @TinyGuy97 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree. I want another Paper Mario game with original characters, good writing, partners, and etc.The reasoning for why they took it all away was just stupid. Who cares if Mario & Luigi exist? That's a totally different franchise to me. Paper Mario and Mario & Luig tackle differently. Mario & Luigi has high numbers, is more action based, has wacky off the wall humor, and is overall very silly.
      Paper Mario has low numbers, is more tactical, has dialogue based humor, and is overall more serious compare to Mario & Luigi more action style.
      Also, Paper Mario came first so changing the earlier Mario RPG series is such a stupid move on Nintendo part. Plus, Mario & Luigi kept the same formula for years now so why change Paper Mario?

    • @TinyGuy97
      @TinyGuy97 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, too bad next we'll get "Paper Mario Glue Surprise" as the next Paper Mario game if nothing change. Good news is, I remember an article that came after Color Splash that said they were going to take Paper Mario into a new direction from Color Splash so Sticker Star 3 is probably not the next game. One can hope.

    Definitely want to see Super Mario RPG get a proper sequel. Paper Mario was originally going to be a sequel but that changed while it was being made. In fact, Paper Mario has many elements that are similar to Mario RPG (Peach not just being a total damsel in distress, ending parade, a part where you can become original Mario, active timed hits in battle). Still, a proper sequel and letting the RPG characters be a part of Mario in general would be awesome.
    Also The Legend Of Dragoon would be a cool sequel, although it desperately wants a remaster more than anything.

    Two of my favorite sequels are Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3. Adding an entire postgane, increasing the scope of the world, adding more Pikmin, while still retaining its great environment and feel. Yet, they don't devalue the original, since it has the best sense of urgency, best speed runner set ups, and is more streamlined with fewer cutscenes and tutorials than the latter ones.

    Actually, the backtracking regarding General White while not executed perfectly actually does serve a pretty important purpose for the atmosphere of the final battle where all the people from all the places you‘ve been to pray for you. Now Paper Mario 2 isn’t exactly the shortest game and if you don’t have that much time, you’ll take over a month to beat it, so having you backtrack to all those places is to remind you what you did there in advance to prevent you from going „Wait, who were these guys again?“ during the epic moment in the finale. Good idea, but bad execution. Still better than all the aimless running around you have to do in Sticker Star if you missed a Thing Sticker and didn’t even realize you did.

    • @hauntedshadowslegacy2826
      @hauntedshadowslegacy2826 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It probably should've been a more optional last-look-back quest. Instead of going everywhere and talking to everyone to find one guy, it would've been better to have him right there and tell the player something like, 'after this, there's no turning back. Might wanna stop by and see your friends before heading off. I'll be in [place name] when you're ready.' That way, you could see all the places you've been OR you could skip right to the final fight.

    • @primrosett
      @primrosett 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I always see ppl complain the most about the General White thing but I think it's.... meh. Like, sure, I'd prefer it was handled differently and better but honestly chapter 4's backtracking is way more painful to me. Maybe it's because I would really, really love chapter 4 if not for the backtracking because the concept, aesthetics and Vivian are all great.

    The perfect New Paper Mario game would be an expansion of TTYD... a mix of the best elements of 64 and TTYD, and a change to the Turn-based stage you fight on. 64 had nothing. TTYD was a stage. What could the next game do that affects gameplay, doesn't feel too off, but is still a ton of fun?
    TTYD handled fast travel poorly, and had a confusing sewer. 64 handled Fast Travel a lot better.
    That's an example of something 64 had that TTYD didn't do as well. Fast Travel should be fast... Having to unlock new moves and travel a long distance just to get to fast travel pipes is annoying... and areas that are accessible in Rougeport, like Glitzville, don't have a fast travel pipe. Fahr outpost should've had its own fast travel pipe, because every time you go there, you have to walk through a hallway with a ton of hard-hitting enemies.

    • @snomangaming
      @snomangaming  5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Answering the question at the end, one of my all-time favorite sequels to a game has been, & always will be, Sly 2: Band of Thieves.
    Sly 1 in my opinion was a mediocre game - it was a 3d platformer collect-a-thon that didn't do the collect-a-thon genre too well. It had an unforgettable story with pretty good writing, but the bosses did feel a bit repetitive. On top of that, the stealth aspect felt a bit forced to me & almost contradictory to the type of platformer it was trying to be.
    Sly 2, on the other hand, built upon the the original's story, made the whole Cooper Gang a playable cast, & you truly felt like you were pulling off a string of heists. The game lightened up on the collect-a-thon aspect in favor of putting that aside as a side objective. You had straight-up levels in unique & massive hub worlds of which you went around completing various objectives all of which built up to the grand operation... & the writing & plot twists are absolutely BEAUTIFUL.

    YEAH BOIIIII.
    I absolutely love TTYD. I think the main thing that makes sequels that aren't too different from their predecessor work is time. If TTYD came out for the N64 too it would have felt too samey, but because it is for Gamecube it works perfectly. The graphical and control improvements, as well as all the content, are enough of a plus to justify all the similarities.
    Another example of time being a major factor is the Mario Galaxies, in their case, there wasn't enough time, and it resulted in Galaxy 2 feeling like just an expansion for Galaxy 1, even if they are still good games.
    An exception would be Majora's, which went so far ahead of Ocarina artistically that it didn't matter they looked and felt so similar.
    One game I have believed needs a sequel ever since I played it is a little gem on the DS called Ghost Trick. It is legit one of the best games of all time. It's so sad such a near perfect game got shafted by bad marketing when it first came out.
    Missile best dog in gaming.

      And, answering one of your questions! I'd love to see a sequel to the Wii JRPG, The Last Story. But mostly because of the gameplay, in both feel and design. I don't think using the same characters and setting from the first game would be very interesting, so I'd like to see a Xenoblade-like treatment, where the sequel has a new world, but with the same gameplay from the previous iteration.

    Sequel wise, I'm personally waiting on another Weegee's Mansion. I never had a Gamecube (R.I.P me), so I've only ever played Dark Moon, and it was (and still is) one of my absolute favourite games.
    The concept made something brand new out of good ol' Luigi board, turning him into an actual ghostbuster, traversing brand new ghostly mansions or buildings, each with different themes, my personal favourite being the Haunted Towers.
    Plus, I'm a fan of my puzzle games, and the different kinds of puzzles that were presented made my heart melt. From blowing back a rug to reveal a hole in the floor, to transporting a bucket full of water via portals to make a vine grow, to making doors reappear by using your dark light.
    And, sure, many moments were undoubtedly questionable (i.e. fighting a... Staircase?), but the main story seems almost perfect and I've spent hours on Dark Moons trying to hunt every last Boo and nab every last Gem.
    Edit: 3 weeks later, I CALLED IT! LUIGI'S MANSION 3 IN 2019! YEEEES!

    Chapter 7 in TTYD is eased by the fact that most of the areas have a fast travel warp system in the sewers of Rogueport, meaning that you just go around the sewers from place to place.
    Additionally, as people have mentioned, for those not rushing through the game, the beginning of Chapter 7 tries to make you go back through all the different areas that you once visited. It kind of shows you how far you've come.

    TTYD!!! I feel a good example of a recent good sequel would be Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, it heavily expands on the themes of the first while sprucing up the gameplay in fun ways, while keeping the simple stealth and grounded gunplay from the first game. Also CASTLE CRASHERS NEEDS A SEQUEL!!!

      5: Ni No Kuni 2. Stole my heart away with it’s artstyle, amazing story, intuitive combat, and the fact that it was the only game that made me cry tears of joy with its ending. It’s a genuine feel-good game that’s worth a play through or two.
      Before I state 4, just so you know, it’s a pity spot as I’ve never seen a game who’s community and the people against it became the plot of the game.
      4: Undertale. I don’t find this game anything too special. It has great music and characters, why also suffering from notable flaws. It’s a good 7/10 game. The only reason it’s here is the previously stated reason.
      3: Banjo-Kazooie/Banjo-Tooie. It’s a tie, and for good reason. These games were the must-haves of the N64. The first with its bright, colorful and disconnected worlds, amazing music, writing that games made this year still struggle to beat, and an artstyle that when up-resed. to modern 1080 still have a modern feel. The sequel with its connected worlds, massive scale, and boss fights for every world, why keeping everything that made the original so great intact. Huge worlds that are deceptively huge, that seem simple at first until you see the extra layers of care and effort in each one. These games are 100/10 masterpieces that should be played by everyone, and in my opinion are the greatest games ever made.
      2 and 1 are able to top 3 due to the emotional impact that they left on me, changing my feelings, attitude, and opinions on everything.
      2: Night in the Woods. I found this game through the same source I saw 1 through. It made me come to terms with where I was from, removing my desire to run away from the mountain state, now infamous due to FO76, and gave me a desire to help it. It’s a rushing story with multiple paths, but only one ending. It’s a good game. 6.5-7/10.
      1: OXENFREE. This game would take double the Ann of words than everything I’ve typed in this comment when it’s finished to describe every impact it had on me. I’m no horror fan, yet this is my favorite game. It’s helped me get out of a lifetime battle with depression, help me find a way out of my autism’s personality and forge myself into my own person, saved me from committing suicide, and more. I recommend that you play this game first before watching anything, it’s an 8.5/10 game that is fairly intuitive and easy to get lost in. It’s $20, but if you don’t want to shell out the cash for it, I recommend you watch who I got it from, @JackSepticEye. His playthrough if the game didn’t have new game+, but the first 10 minutes are what made me want it.
      And there you go.

  • @BlueNinjakoopa553

    The attention to detail when it came to mechanics is what keeps this game so fresh in my opinion, aside from the amazing visuals. Cortez's swords for example each had their own properties. When you play through the game more, you learn that Vivian's Fiery Jinx made short work of them, but as a kid, I had to deal with those swords individually and was fascinated with their different effects. The rapier for example struck both characters and ignored defense, while the hook could poison you.
    On parallels, yeah there are a lot, but I think that this was an attempt to remind the players of what made the first game so memorable. Chapter 3 having a boss based on a classic enemy from Super Mario Bros. 3 (Spike) that held a "secret" that made them more powerful and responsible for the disappearance of certain individuals was a welcome feature. Chapter 4 involving town mischief (Shy Guys in Toad Town, the pig ordeal in Twilight Town) and a storage room to access an important item. The Riddle Tower having throwbacks to Crystal Palace, and the Palace of Shadow having puzzle throwbacks to Bowser's Castle were also nice touches. Then you have character parallels: Tec-XX and Twink, Crump and Jr. Troopa, Pennington and Herringway, and most of the partners. Some could argue that these make the game feel more like a remake than a sequel, but I think they were reused to keep the feel of the original intact.

    I'm glad that you mentioned the subjectivity of comparing sequels to the original. Personally, I love Banjo-Tooie, but I realize that can be an unpopular opinion. I feel that it refined so much about the original game mechanically, while expanding the story and exploration to truly make you feel like you are on an adventure. While somewhat limited, they did introduce many new means of traversal, such as warp pads and the train; I mean some levels even had secret passageways to other levels. The complexity of certain puzzles made them very rewarding to solve, and I ended up engaging with the world far more as a result. Coupled with excellent music and characters, most levels were just more memorable than the first game for me, apart from Click Clock Wood and a few others. Still, you can't go wrong with either game; just a matter of preference, really. Anyway, great job with this video Snoman!

    I didn't mind the backtracking to find Bobbery at all, but I love the world of TTYD so much so that's probably why! I have a lot of "favorite" sequels that did everything the predecessor did but better (mostly), so I'll list em.
    -Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver
    Dumbass gen wars aside, you have to remember that these were supposed to be the last Pokemon games developed before the first director straight-up bailed. And holy shit, compared to it's time, Pokemon Gold and Silver are seriously one of the best sequels you could ask for from a game. A new region to explore, revisiting the old region, collecting 16 gym badges, fighting your past self (which no other game at the time it was made did this to my knowledge), extra things to do and find thanks to the in-game real time clock mechanic... This is how a sequel should be done in my honest opinion. And I genuinely hate how the level curve is supposed to be a con against Gen 2, because in casual play, who fucking cares man. What, do you wanna be level 60-70 by Elite 4 first round and fight Level 120s by the end? That sounds like some edgy fangame not gonna lie. Pokemon Crystal improved the game even more too with more quality of life details.
    -Pokemon Explorers of Time and Darkness
    Following the Pokemon train, Time and Darkness is also a really fucking good sequel. While the rival team in here doesn't do that much compared to Team Meanies in Red/Blue, the removal of friend areas (Rest In Peace I'll miss you forever my sweets), everything else just feels overall better. The story is completely different yet still heart-wrenching, the OST is one of the largest soundtracks I've honestly heard that's pretty much all original songs, more Pokemon of course, the items you can hold that boost certain Pokemon and types, much much more items, much much more cinematic cutscenes, and very little bloated 99 floor dungeons just make it a joy to play through. Red and Blue still stand on their own, however, for telling a completely different story and being much shorter, and thus overall, easier to replay. And like Gold and Silver, Explorers of Sky expanded upon the game *EVEN MORE,* making an already good sequel almost god-like, if it wasn't already.
    -Super Smash Brothers Melee
    Another game's title that envokes wars from just mentioning it. But fuck man, some people may love 64, but in my eyes, Melee is a major MAJOR step-up from it. Graphically and content wise. It may have balancing issues and can be glitchy too, but like I said in Gold and Silver, a casual (aka me) hardly even notices. I'm playing with AI here, not with fucking tourney goers that pick Marth, Fox, Shiek, Puff, Falcon, and Falco 24/7. Balancing is hardly an issue at my level, and glitches don't crop up as much as you'd think if you just play the game for fun. I haven't even mentioned the good stuff that sets it apart from 64 either. The event matches are a new welcome addition to expand upon the game's life, and I loved the event matches where you can play whoever you wanted to play. Adventure Mode is a great step-up from the previous adventure mode in 64 in every way, with some hidden secrets to find if you're good enough. Meta Crystal is gone sadly, but when you unlock Luigi the game throws a curve-ball at you and instead of fighting Metal Mario, you now have to fight the Metal Bros. It's so fucking good. Old Adventure mode has been retconned to Classic Mode, and I'm fine with that. Just having the option there is super nice. Plus the introduction to trophies to learn more about Nintendo, the more stages, the more characters, the graphical jump from 64 to GameCube... It's all so good.
    -Paper Mario TTYD
    I can't really say what's already been said here. I just really fucking love it. Mainly for the battle mechanics. It's incredibly depressing that no game has even come close to replicating and fleshing out TTYD's battle system. Because it's so fucking GOOD. That new Paper Bugs game coming out sparks some hope for me though.
    -Donkey Kong Country 2
    I could go in-depth as to why I love DKC2 so much, but somebody else did. And I'd recommend you check him out. His name on TH-cam is TheGeekCritique.

    For the question I would say comparing Donkey Kong Country Returns to Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. Similar to how you did with 1 and 2.
    Returns was a really good reboot but was held back by certain mechanics (1 Hit K.O. Minecart and especially the Rocket Barrel Stages), oversights (Even though it didn't bother me many people complain about the waggle controls), and the main villains coming off a bit bland.
    Tropical Freeze on the other hand improved what was already so great about Returns and fixed almost all of the issues people had. Minecarts and Rocket Barrels being able to take multiple hits and collect hearts made the stages much more enjoyable and accessible for new players. The Player could play with far more control schemes allowing people who didn't like waggle to have fun and lastly the Snowmad's are really good antagonists that actually feel like they were made with advantgarde creativity in mind.

    for fun: my own comments on the whole Paper Mario lineage
    PM64: Not only just good, potentially unfairly underrated next to TTYD. Has it's own sorta simple charm to it that no other Paper Mario ever really attempted to re-capture, probably the second best of the series depending on how you factor in SPM, and I can understand why some people have it as their top game even if I don't completely agree
    TTYD: You already know everything i could say here and I agree fully with the praises and faults this video and most other people bring up. (especially General White), my other biggest complaint is just that it's a total cakewalk and I think Superguarding, while really cool on paper, just destroys any semblance of difficulty from normal enemies and leaves you a bit *too* much room to utterly decimate everything with an overpowered badge setup. Maybe some day a "Pro Mode" hack for it will come out. Still my favorite out of all of them though. Also Vivian is a precious being and I love her.
    SPM: This is like the polar opposite of the game that comes after, being not an RPG at all but still definably being a "Paper Mario" game. What it loses in becoming a platformer it somewhat makes up with great writing and fun storytelling and characterization... somewhat. Honestly it's not my cup of tea at the end of the day though the Pits in this game are pretty great. I've watched a playthrough of it in recent years and i don't know that it holds up AS well as people think it did, but it's alright for what it's trying to do, and I think they could've refined the formula better if they did this again. Also Bowser is a precious being and I love him. The problem is, unless you're someone who just really doesn't care for RPG gameplay and likes platformers a ton, there's pretty much nowhere for this to go but 3rd place regardless of quality thanks to...
    Sticker Star: This is basically someone at Nintendo missing the mark as hard as humanly possible about why people like Paper Mario, potentially that someone is Miyamoto, but who knows. It's a turn-based RPG, but it is not a "Paper Mario" game by any standard except what characters are performing the actions on-screen. It's a black mark on the franchise as a whole, and even if judging the game in a vacuum would make it "okay" to even "Good" potentially, it's a slap in the face to fans of the series and a very bland game even outside of that. Also finding the place to use Thing stickers is a Guide Dang It moment sometimes, which is horrible considering that's the main method of progressing the story. But there's not enough time in the day to complain about Sticker Star's faults, it's the worst game, there is no discussion to be had. If the production values were lower this is designed like a weird fangame that doesn't know how to write dialog, so they just don't include it beyond what's required. Burn it.
    Color Splash: it's basically "Making the best of a bad situation", paint mechanic kinda adds some depth to combat but after your first handful of level ups you'll almost never run out of paint again unless you're extremely wasteful. Ultimately though it's still Sticker Star 2, with one notable exception. It has a writing staff, and a REALLY GOOD writing staff. It's a funny game, and that's pretty much the saving grace of it. I still don't know that you'd really need to play it to get the experience of the good parts (it's Sticker Star 2), but at least get the team who wrote for it on some better projects.

      edfreak9001 Miyamoto is to blame just a little for Sticker Star, but only very little. He just said for Sticker Star to use Mario's already pre-existing designs. Not to make everything and everyone Toads. And if you've stuck with Mario for the long-haul, you'd know there's *plenty* of designs to work with to make a coherent game.

      Color Splash is also LOADS better at letting you know what to do. It can go too far sometimes but usually it's pretty good. Also the overall story is actually pretty creative. Yes, it's "collect X items", but literally every game in this series has done that, TTYD included. The environments aren't the most creative things ever but they're not bad and do feel very connected, unlike some of the predecessors.

    Interestingly, I played TTYD first, so I felt the rehash problem when I went back and played the first game a few years later. I had no idea that the Excess Express whodunit scenario had been done before or that Koops' entire personality and character arc was a repeat of Lakiluster. I feel that I can appreciate TTYD more because of that, but I recognize that it retreads old ground from the first game. Besides, I felt TTYD had the stronger cast anyways with characters like Vivian, Bobbery, and Goombella. Those three alone had more memorable personalities and backstories than the partners in PM1, imo. PM1 is still a solid game, but I more fondly remember TTYD.

    Now Thousand Year Door is a game near and dear to my heart and I very much agree with the video... However no game is perfect and I think for all its awesomeness Thousand Year Door have a HUGE flaw that really hurts it on subsequent playthroughs: the pacing.
    The pacing in this game constantly changes and very rarely for the better. The game gets too heavy in the exposition in the Peach interludes, which makes these already sluggish sections feel even more slow. Also Chapter 4... Just Chapter 4. I think people like to go easy on this chapter due to having Vivian become a party member and the introduction of the memorable enemy Doopliss, but in all honesty this is one of the worst chapters in the entire franchise due to the nightmarish amounts of pointless backtracking and how you are forced to avoid enemies for an extended time. And of course: General Freakin’ White. This seems to be a problem in all Paper Mario games, they like to hear themselves talk and will grind the story to a halt just to tell a joke. Francine forcing Franky to say he's sorry 100 times is hilarious the first time, but after that... You just really wish there was a fast forward button. Compare to Paper Mario which is always sure to keep things brisk and paces it's exposition much better, as well as Color Splash which also keeps things going quickly and makes sure that if things do halt for a joke it doesn't do so for too long and that the joke is light on text.
    Now I do still really enjoy this game, it remains easily one of my favorite Mario RPGs and it is certainly better than the travesty that is Super Paper Mario. For it's serious low points, Thousand Year Door has a high point to help alleviate it. Personally It think you have be just as quick to criticize your favorite games as well as praise, if you are unable to find something wrong with a game you like I think there is a problem with that.

      Sticker Star is a travesty to be sure, but I find Super Paper Mario to be an even LARGER travesty. Sticker Star has at least more than 10 times I enjoyed the game, whereas in Super Paper Mario I can count the amount of times I was having fun on one hand. I get why people like Super Paper Mario so much, but for me I just can't get past all the times it frustrates me. To me it feels like a proto-Undertale: people enjoy the story so much they forget the gameplay has a lot of problems.

      Dracomut Except Sticker Star is a larger bigger travesty, not SPM. Super Paper Mario was still great. Sticker Star disrespected Paper Mario and embarrassed itself with dull design. SPM had unique designs. The gameplay can still be fun. The gameplay isn't fun in Sticker Star at all. Super Paper Mario still kept many of the concepts from TTYD. Sticker Star didn't and ended up generic/uninteresting. Not only it's the worst in the series, but there's a reason why Snoman didn't mention it.

    Gotta disagree with the verdict on Banjo-Tooie. It cut down on a lot of the mindless collecting that took place in Kazooie and streamlined it so that collectibles were rewards for meaningful accomplishments rather than just trinkets to gather. In addition, while the worlds of Kazooie were fairly safe and trope-y (snow, desert, jungle, etc.), Tooie had unique worlds like a Mayan Temple, a mining complex and an amusement park, just to name a few. Finally, the amount of effort each Jiggy took to get made them so much more rewarding to find, and the puzzles were way more creative and outside-the-box than ever before (the ones involving the train are still some of my favorite in any game).
    That last point may be just preference, but what's not preference is how much richer and more alive the world of Tooie is than Kazooie. The characters have deeper personalities, they have actual conversations rather than just talking to themselves, and the tone is much darker and more mature. In it's presentation and writing it's an improvement over the original in every way, raising the stakes and adding depth that wasn't there before while still retaining the fairy-tale-gone-wrong charm and cheeky British humor that made the original so likable. There are some bad things about Tooie like a few obnoxious minigames and how easy it is to get lost in worlds like Glitter Gulch Mine and Terrydactyland, but the pros far outweigh the cons for me.

Nowadays the company that made the game doesn’t really exist anymore, but I’m still glad with what I got. Today the market is plagued by shooters, while most of them a are first person and Metal Arms was third person, it didn’t have too much that really made it stand out, and I feel if it got a sequel somehow, it wouldn’t be what the original was. The game was amazing and I wish it had gotten that sequel, but alas, ‘twas not to be.

      YES, and the way it was introduced was amazing, having you play an entire level where it’s the only real weapon you have at your disposal, and letting you see there are some enemies you can’t use it on. Just 10/10 performance. Except hold your ground, hold your ground sucks.

    I wish Kid Icarus Uprising had a sequel. I know it's part of a series of games already, but it does so much different from the original games, really only taking the story and aesthetics. It recapped the older games while introducing something new that has so much potential to be expanded on. I just hope it doesn't take another 25 years lol

      This. The world building in Uprising and overwhelming amount of insanely charming, memorable characters made it shoot to the top of my list of favorite Nintendo franchises, for lore at least if not raw gameplay. Though I was quite fond of the gameplay as well.

    Snoman Gaming, I'm really happy I found your videos. I recently was playing DK64 and was loving it. I had your video about it in my reccomended but ignored it for a while because I liked the game. I finally watched it and loved it. It made me realize that while I still do love DK64, it does have many flaws; and thats when I subbed.
    As for this video, I've actually heard from many that they found Banjo-Tooie even better than the first but I like Banjo-Kazooie more personally. I agree with what you said. As for my favorite sequels, I definitely think that Spyro 1, 2, and 3 have great sequels. Im really excited for the remaster.
    I think I have three games that I would enjoy sequels for:
    Okami (Okami 2 because I'm aware that Okamiden exists but another one would be cool)
    Anyway, awesome video! Keep up the great work!

    I honestly think Thousand-Year Door hits all the marks of a great sequel. It flushes out the combat system with a audience system that I never knew I wanted until I got it, made the world's more expensive, the dialogue was just as funny if not more so. But the main reason why I love this game so much is just because of its replayability because every time I replay this game I get so hyped 😆!

    Can’t think of too many game I would have wished to have gotten a sequel because there’s much to be said on how people react and debate over sequels whether they haven’t changed enough or changed too much. I would say that I would love a new 3D Kong game without all the bad game designs but still with the same charm as you stated in my favorite video of yours, Bad Game Design: Donkey Kong 64. I will say though that I loved this video especially how you incorporated iconic game soundtracks like Banjo Tooie’s to smoothly transition between your examples and criticisms. Too often I see people complain about whether a sequel has abandoned it’s old predecessor like Nuts and Bolts or is just beating a dead horse like name a CoD game. It’s refreshing to see someone put some thought into what they believe makes a good sequel as you have in this video :)

      I think the next DKC game - assuming there's another one - could have a 3D overworld you can physically move around in, both as a homage to DKC3 and probably borrowing some from DK64.

    Two of the best sequels out there are Danganronpa 2 and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze.
    Danganronpa 2 takes everything you knew about the first one and turns it on its head. Mysteries aren't so clear cut and simple and have a new layer of complexity. The killers are more sympathetic, the setting is a nice change of pace, the cast is far better, and the plot twist are insane.
    Tropical Freeze took everything from Returns, which was a pretty great game, and turned it into the a 2D platformer masterpiece. I can't thing of a 2D platformer with better level design than Tropical Freeze.

    IMO, the creepy steeple's backtracking is much more annoying than the search for general white. At least when searching for general white you can just run through warp pipes directly there... no need to keep fighting the same damn enemies. And in steeple, you go through the same place like six times consecutively. At least when looking for the general, it's places you have't been in aw hile

    • @TinyGuy97

    I really liked Majora's Mask when compared to OoT. It had the lovely gameplay of its predecessor, while providing a much more complex and interesting story. Rather than "you are chosen to defeat such and such" you are instead doing it because Link is kindhearted enough to do so.
    The world itself is also darker, with aliens abducting cattle and a young girl (which has a dramatic effect on her sister) to a monkey about to be executed. The three day mechanic really shines here, as you go back in time after completing them and then do it again, examining it, Cremia's side quest as well as Anju and Kafei's being the most memorable for me.

    I absolutely love EarthBound Beginnings, mainly because it's a whimsical adventure that recreates that childhood essence. Its sequel, EarthBound, takes that whimsical feeling, but expands on it by also exemplifying the loss of childhood, giving the story even more impact. Even though EarthBound also improved over its predecessor in terms of mechanics, what makes it a perfect sequel is actually how deep it goes as a narrative.

    while the sly series is, well, a series, i loved every game, and really want sly 5. it always felt great flying though the air, stringing together jumps and stylish moves, kept together by the almighty para-glider. combat was smooth, and unfortunately bare, but always satisfying. the stealth was perfect, with it being in line with the ascetic of the game (that of a comic book) and was so simple to pick up. damn i love those games.

    Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back did a lot right, I think, and feels like the real launch of the series. It introduced the crystals to be series, the idea that you open up five levels at a time rather than going through levels in a strictly linear fashion, and gave Crash more actions to do like crawl, slide, and ground-pound, so that all of the buttons on the front of the controller did something now (unlike in the original, where the circle button had no function). Yet it also kept a lot f things that the original did right, such as taking full advantage of the third dimension, retaining the sense of humor, etc. It elaborated on what the original did without feeling like a fundamentally different game.

    • @stephybloops
      @stephybloops 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think Crash 3 and Spyro 3 innovated on the predecessors a bit too much to be great sequels. The more you add, the farther you get from that core gameplay. Why am I traveling through time to stop an evil mask? I just want to take down Dr. Cortex and save my girlfriend. Why am I playing with 5 characters? I just want to play with Spyro.
      The 2nd games were definitely the best in both series

      @stephybloops 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dracomut Not really. My main point was the farther you deviate from the original gameplay, the less related it is to the first game. People don’t like Zelda 2 a lot because it was miles different from the first, and got rid of what made the original fun. You go from hopping on enemies in Super Mario to throwing turnips at enemies and having a health bar in Mario 2

    • @Dracomut
      @Dracomut 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fun is fun, regardless on whether it is similar to the original or not. Keep in mind we have more franchises that get criticized for not deviating from their norm than franchises that do.

    "What if we took Super Mario 64... but gave him a water pack?"
    No but really, Sunshine is more amazing than it gets credit for. It keeps (most of) 64's acrobatic finesse and includes a brand new mechanic over top it that not only gives Mario a way to control his jumps, but turns up the environmental interaction to 11. AND it brings back Yoshi. It feels so good to play and is so surprisingly skill-based that it's no wonder it's such a popular speedrun game.

    Mass Effect 2!
    It gets blamed for being too focused on action, but I think its more action-oriented combat actually made it kinda less relevant (no more having to choose things down to the bullet type) and left a lot of focus on what I really loved about Mass Effect: the world building.
    Free from the chains of the original plot (being a spectre, being in the military) you are left to roam the universe to your heart's content while engaging with even more interesting characters than in the first chapter (though I really missed having Wrex).
    I think it's for these reasons that Mass Effect 3 couldn't have been the best game from the get go: It was meant to wrap up the story rather than expanding it even further (and in the end it didn't do such a bad job at that).

    My favorite gaming sequel is definitely Monument Valley 2. After the first game introduced new mechanics and/or plot points almost every level, the sequel provided a couple levels to refresh your memory of the old game’s mechanics, and then introduced some new ones. MV2 also continued the franchise’s legacy of beautiful, vibrant yet simplistically detailed stages and calm, brilliant music.

    Funny enough, I feel like the Pokemon games do "sequels" pretty well. Graphics upgrades are just the most obvious changes. Others include fully-animated in-battle sprites/models, easy-to-access menus, and better uses of touchscreens. Also, some Pokemon that are usually rare get more emphasis, such as Slowpoke showing up early (along with other water-types) and having a dungeon in Gold/Silver/Crystal and Dunsparse being available for 1st-gym-demolishing in X/Y.

    Infamous 2 is an amazing sequel. It fixed every problem i had with infamous 1 (except for half the story being locked behind an evil path that ill feel guilty for playing, but its kind of a core aspect of the series so ehh). The climbing in 1 had a lot of spamming jump so in 2 they added neon bars that instantly yeet you to the top of the building, as well as an ice block boost jump. The areas in 1 were kinda samey, in 2 theres the city, the graveyard, the flooded areas, the train yard, etc that all feel different and require you to move around differently. In 1, the standard shock attack was the most efficient and had 0 cost, in 2 the shock drains your energy slightly just like everything else, the melee attacks were made stronger and looked cooler with the tesla bat, and the other special attacks were made more worth using in general
