My favorite part of paper mario as an RPG is the low numbers. A lot of RPGs start you off doing random 4 digit numbers of damage and healing these days, and it's meaningless padding. The overall low numbers throughout the game means that every single number actually matters, which is both more intuitive and cleaner design.

    • @stephybloops
      @stephybloops 5 ปีที่แล้ว +41

I really liked the high numbers that were done with Earthbound, where with the mechanic of HP scrolling, you had no chance to eat food in time before you die at low levels, but high levels become very strategic, you have to manage your whole team to attack and heal while you're pelted with Elite Starmen using PSI Starstorm and heavily damaging your whole team, and you actually feel strong hitting enemies with 500 damage, but they're scaled up with you so they can still be a good threat. Great example of high numbers without having them be padding

IkomaTanomori what rpg starts you with 4 digit numbers?

    • @Dracomut
      @Dracomut 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

I do agree with your point, but what RPG starts you with 4 digit numbers of damage? In general most good JRPGs, especially Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, start in the double digits and then slowly raise so that you get used to the increasing numbers.

I know this has nothing to do with PM, but this is always why I just couldn't ever get into Yugiho when I was already so into Magic. Paper Mario is to Magic the Gathering as JRPGS is to Yugiho. Everything does like 1500 damage or more. Like why?

In my honest opinion, Paper Mario has one of the best soundtracks of all time. If you look at the full tracklist, they put an insane amount of effort into it. There are little songs that only play once or twice, but they still put them in. Every major boss has a unique track. They could have just made a generic boss fight song, but they wanted to make sure every major boss had a special feel to them. One of my personal favorites is the Koopa Bros. battle music which has a sound effect in it that sounds like they're cackling at you. It's amazing. The soundtrack was way ahead of its time and it was super memorable and well composed. I love this game so much. It is just so well rounded and super fun!

MistressZelda If you love paper mario, you should try a romhack/mod called Paper Mario Pro Mode. It beefs up the difficulty, making every enemy deal 2x damage and changing lots of encounters to have more and/or tougher enemies. For example, you'll fight a Clubba or two as early as the Koopa Bros. Fortress. There are also new badges and boss mechanics, and a hidden boo in Peach's castle kitchen lets you skip the prologue. The Dry Dry Desert is made a lot more interesting with sand dunes and other obstacles blocking certain paths. There are other QoL changes like being able to answer Chuck Quizmo's questions all in a row until you either miss one or reach questions about parts of the game you haven't reached. In this video specifically, Snoman complains that the star powers weren't very useful. This hack's extra level of challenge changes that. In Pro Mode, you need every opportunity and advantage you can get, and Paper Mario's awesome battling, leveling, badge, star power, and partner mechanics are pushed to an entirely new level. You HAVE to play it if you like Paper Mario. Just look up the Star Rod Discord and find an invite.

My favorite thing about Paper Mario is just the world Intelligent Systems had laid out for the portly plumber. It’s so fleshed out and feels so alive. The towns and communities are all well established and everyone in them has something interesting to say. I also like that the enemies you see in most Mario games aren’t all bad here. Most of them are actually pretty friendly. It’s only those who are loyal to Bowser who are considered “bad guys”. It’s a world where all these different peoples and species live together in harmony. Speaking of Bowser’s baddies though, I like their portrayals a lot too. When you talk to the Koopatrols as Peach in the the Chapter 6 interlude, they all act like regular joes just doing a day job. They slack off, they complain about how hard they’re worked, one guy even rants about his Clubba co-worker slacking off and not letting him clock out of his shift. The games are just so full of character and personality that it’s crazy. Apologies for my long comment; this game just amazes me from every angle. It’s one of the best games out there in my opinion.

While it's in the sequel, I personally love how Rougeport acts as a melting pot of so many different races living together.
It's a type of detail that modern RPGs that try to build a more serious world can sometimes lack.

I love the first 3 Paper Mario games.
Paper Mario felt like an evolution of Super Mario RPG's timed-actions during turn-based gameplay, with a reworked Partner system, badges that altered the way you play, and traversal puzzles that made good use of both Mario and his partner's abilities.
Paper Mario TTYD built off the last game's originality, charm, unique environments and scenarios and gameplay mechanics with better hardware to enhance the framerate and visuals. A lot of effort went into contextualising story events that affect the gameplay, and it made the world feel that much more lived-in, from character designs that set apart the denisens of Mario's world from one another, to the reasons and circumstances behind partners joining your team. The crowd that watches you during battles added yet another dynamic layer to the already fresh take on turn-based gameplay, with hecklers throwing dangerous weapons at you if you don't deal with them fast enough, and supporters throwing coins or healing items. The more excited the crowd gets, the more Star power you earn, and getting a large crowd behind you could greatly help during the more rigorous battles.
Super Paper Mario was... well, an odd game to say the least. It wasn't really the same type of game as the previous two, yet it still had unique level themes and scenarios the franchise is known for, as well as an emotional storyline, and one of the best rogues-gallery I've seen in a Mario game. I also love how said villains weren't just evil for the sake of it, with the charasmatic yet sympathetic Count Bleck doing what he did out of inconsolable grief and vengeance, and Nastasia willing to do anything if it means pleasing Bleck. And of course, my absolute favourite Mario villain, Dimentio. Initially introduced as a minion, I was shocked just to see all unpredictable ways he'd behave, from fighting Mario to helping him, to demolishing an entire world, and and even temporarily killing him at one point. And that's not even getting into the revelations at the end. I also love how throughout the game, you have a painful reminder of how much danger the world is in, with a black hole growing ever larger in the hubworld as the game progresses. It's such an effective way of making the player empathise for the characters, and while the general art style and character designs left a lot to be desired, the villains, story and worlds themselves more than made up for it in my opinion.

I played TTYD as a kid and only later as an adult went back to play the original. Both are FANTASTIC games, but playing them in this order is probably ill-advised. Not for story reasons (they're pretty disconnected), but because TTYD expands so much on the concept that going back to the original feels like the step-back it is.
It's also incredibly apparent how much was flat-out copy-pasted into TTYD. Partners, locales, abilities, etc. Not that I'm complaining, mind you, but it's really interesting. Overall they're both phenomenal games that are totally worth playing in 2018

NME gaming If you love paper mario, you should try a romhack/mod called Paper Mario Pro Mode.

I think the main beauty about the first 3 Mario RPGS (Mario RPG, Paper Mario, and Thousand Year Door) is just how polished they are. They have some things that could be better, but there is nothing that can be called legit bad, they are nearly perfect games.
Mario RPG could have better platforming control, but you get used to it, and both Paper Marios could better some things, but only slightly.
I personally like TTYD the best, but probably just because it's one of my nostalgia games. I replay it every couple of years.
Super Paper Mario is nice, and I haven't played the other 2, but the first 3 really are a gold standard for RPGS for me.
They aren't overly long, every battle is fun, grinding isn't really a thing in them, characters are memorable and there is all kind emotions and tones throughout them.
Damn I wanna play one now. Thanks

the first time i ever played paper mario as a little kid, i thought it was a great idea to put all my levels into health points, and had almost zero badge points and a few flower points, and i will tell you right now that made the game 10 times harder than it should have been. And then the second time i played through it a few years later, i distributed my levels evenly in health, flower, and badge points, and the game was a lot easier, but still as enjoyable due to how detailed the game's environment is.

Personally I haven't found a good balance for level up bonuses in Pro Mode. I've put most of them into BP, a few in HP, and like 1 or 2 in FP. I just use the BP for extra health and fp badges though.

That reminds me of the first time I went through M&L SS. I didn't realize that the wheel for additional points could be moved down to different stats, so I just took the 1 to 2 extra HP for every single level up I had. Sure didn't help in the end, for sure.

12:23 All the little details, eh?
My favorite part of the game isn't really a huge one. It's the sidequest in Club 64 where you help a diva (a Toad named Chanterelle) regain her singing voice by helping the Master Poet get Lyrics and a Melody. But then, once you complete the sidequest, the devs went the extra mile by giving her a song to sing, and you can listen to it any time you want by revisiting the location. This was something I just thought was cool back then, but upon revisiting this years later, I realized that games just don't have flavor like this that often anymore. Normally they'd reuse a song or remix something that exists elsewhere in the game or something, so for such a meager sidequest to have a song like this absolutely warms my heart, and it's why Chanterelle is straight up my favorite NPC in all of Paper Mario.

Paper mario as a kid... was my absolute favorite game. I had to have rented and beat at least 6 different copies and multiple times for each over the years. I loved it so much that it was absolutely my favorite game of all time. I remember just being an absolute master of this game helping a friend beat junior troopa after going back to toad town on the whale unprepared.... WITH ONE HP. I don't think any other game has ever come so close to my heart as the game I actually idolized, or as a game that seemed MADE for me. As I grew up I loved thousand year door too but THIS game. The first paper mario it still just stands above almost all other games for me and I honestly kinda forgot that until I watched this. It really brought me back to a time where I wholeheartedly loved video games. Great video

Personally I still found Super to have a lot of charming elements even if the combat and sometimes the level pacing were a little weird at times. Also Color Splash from what I have seen absolutely is brimming with great humor and gorgeous anesthetic. Although the lack of character and an engaging battle system does seem to hinder it, I would say it still seemed like a fun time. Of course returning to the roots of what made this series so amazing would be a lot more favorable with the added depth and unique characters the series had.

Goombario is hardly useless. Charge + Multibonk will wreck almost any non-spiked or non-ceiling enemy in the game. It can even make short work of bosses. His Tattle ability is also very useful in and out of battles. Once you Tattle an enemy their HP bar will always be shown which will eliminate the need to equip the Peekaboo badge.

I'm going to throw this out there, personally similar to other series currently like 3D Mario, Mario Party, Mario Tennis etc I think Nintendo might (the emphasis is might) knock the next Paper Mario game out of the park. Personally I think the first words uttered by a Treehouse employee will be "we are harkening back to the original Paper Mario on N64 & TTYD that fans loved back in the day". The game itself I think will follow the same mindset a lot of games they have been producing have recently which is let's take the original formula and add to that in new, unique ways. They will probably bring party members and badges back, maybe even a hub world and the traditional way of selecting moves in battle. I firmly believe that they will do this with their mindset on how they approach fresh new games in long running franchise currently.

I for one welcomed a new playstyle for Paper Mario, but Super Paper Mario had some major issues with level design and pacing in my opinion.
That aside, it has the honor of featuring the best story of the entire Mario Franchise, wonderful characters, fun base platforming and puzzle solving, great bosses (albeit a bit easy), great music, and a lot of creative alternate ideas for a normal 2D Mario game.
I'd welcome them coming back with a similar gamestyle, but perfected. As if the next Paper Mario was the TTYD to Super like TTYD was to 64.

Dracomut Bad level design? I strongly disagree. Maybe in a very few small sections. I know it's more of an RPG, but in terms of raw 2D Mario platforming SPM is my favorite of the bunch. And I fully welcome the difficulty, Mario games aren't usually known for their difficulty. The difficulty in the first 2 games wasn't extremely consistent either to be fair.

@@TheDaemonDD It can be fined tuned I agree, but if the problems mostly pertain to Merlee's Mansion, Whoa Zone, the Cragnon trials, Sammer Guys' trials in Chapter 6 and Overthere Stair, that is where I disagree, because I think they're "annoyance" we're purposeful for the experience.

Thanks for this video, just flat out appreciating a game with a video essay like this is really nice.
My favorite part was just being able to explore this awesome world of Mario from a completly new perspective with all the small details you mentioned. This game is filled to the brim with fun ideas the devs had and thought to themselves were just that: Fun and creative. I salute you, Ingelligent systems. I hope one day we'll get something akin to those first two games again.

Donnerbalken If you love paper mario, you should try a romhack/mod called Paper Mario Pro Mode.

As much as I like SPM, that's where things started to go downhill on the Paper Mario series. It tried to be edgy to the point that the games after did a full 180.

Yes! This was a fantastic game. Honestly, as much as I love Thousand-Year Door, I sometimes think the original Paper Mario might have been the stronger entry thanks to all of that optional content you mentioned. The combat is certainly better in TTYD and some of its story ideas are pretty original, but PM64 feels like a fuller experience with a larger world to explore.

This! The original Paper Mario always felt like the bigger, grander adventure, although the plot itself is more simple. I think it's because considerably more effort went into designing the overworld. Those huge bursts of exploration and progress in between the dialogue-focused events are super important and were really lacking in the 2nd game imo

I love the progression you make as the story goes as you play. First you get steam rolled by browser and get knocked to square one. From there you get stronger and get more badges and fight your way to the top. Eventually getting back to bowser and dropping 8 damage a jump with op healing items.

In my view, the best thing about PM64 is how easy it is to figure out. It doesn't have too many strange, hard to get used to gimmicks as other games, and you can pick it up and become really good in a matter of hours. I also just love the story and characters of this game, they're so imaginative and creative, I could just play this and never get bored. Finding secrets throughout the world is also really fun, like how you could get the over-powered Whacka's Bump from using your hammer on Whacka? Brilliant. Even the name of the character sort of suggests something.

I don't play many RPGs but the ones I invest into are fresh, unique experiences (Mario & Luigi, Xenoblade, Mother). Paper Mario (and TTYD but that's for the next video) is one of the most unique Mario games ever. Gives me such much joy to play it. My favorite part has to be the Locations as you mentioned. You start out in a Goomba Village, that's genius. Toad Town is lively and with many secrets. There's a haunted mansion in the woods, a Yoshi Island with a volcano, a big desert with Egyptian ruins, the Crystal Palace, Star Heaven, Bowser's Castle under Peach's Castle... I could go on and on but you resumed why Paper Mario is basically a 10/10 game perfectly.

I love games that set up the end objective right from the beginning, it gives the player something to look forward to. I remember my first time playing this as a kid I couldn't wait to get to Bowser's Castle in the sky. Finally getting there and then seeing all of the rooms with Mario that you went through as Peach earlier in the game is so satisfying. just one minor thing that makes the game so great, along with everything else you mentioned

Goombario is NOT useless. Besides Tattle being essential, (who wants to waste 2 BP on Peekaboo?) Charge is unbelievably broken. You can shred a lot of bosses by letting him charge up a few turns because there’s no limit to how many times he can use it. His power increases by two each time, so after you charge him like eight turns he’ll dish out 48 damage with Headbonk if he’s at Ultra Rank! Sure, he can’t hit spiked or electrified enemies but just imagine how easily he can win boss fights for you. Especially against the Super Blooper.

Chapter 5 was my favorite part as a kid, not sure what it was about it but I would always make a copy of my save file after I finished chapter 4 so I could do chapter 5 whenever I wanted.
Never liked the part where you baked the cake for exactly 30 seconds, I'd always have to use a timer or our microwave to make sure I got it right.

The perfect adventure. It has so much variety, every chapter is unique and memorable. But the cake goes to the Train Murder Mistery, without a doubt. It's like... every chapter is different, so I'm guessing "what's it going to be this time?" and it goes full Agatha Christie on me, and I'm like "What???"
