    I don't understand that people are able to sing microtonal melodies but it opens up a whole new world. We need more of that. 31-tet is great.

      It's surprisingly doable, once you have an instrument that can accompany you. Of course it's impossible to do acapella, but that's the same in 12 ;)

    One 31TET harmonic structure I find intriguing is (for example) C D# F G#… Something “kinda like” this can be rendered in 19TET or even 12TET (same pitch names), but I find it much more compelling in 31TET, because of its close approximations of 7:6 and 8:7 harmonies. Of course, that’s just a starting point - a fairly-stable “triad alternative,” in essence, with both melodic and harmonic value.

  • @mr88cet

    I have commented to this effect on other videos as well, but I think you’re wise to suggest exploring subminor, neutral, and supermajor harmony _initially at least_ on the chord extensions: 7ths, 9ths, 11ths, etc. Those pitches are expected to sound “spicy,” and it’s usually less disorientating to maintain a familiar base harmony.

      @@HearBetweenTheLines You’ve probably heard of augmented 6th chords, where an aug 6th resolves outwards to an octave:
      G-B-D-E# - F#-A#-C#-F#
      Well… with 19-TET, I can make major 7ths resolve outwards to an octave:
      Gb-Bb-Db-F - F#-A#-C#-F#
      I used a cadence like this in my piece “misatetarta”, where the chord E-A-C-F (a 3rd inversion major 7th chord) resolved to Fb-Ab-D#-Fb (a dominant 7th chord).

    • @ramiolsen
      @ramiolsen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That will happen at some point. The thing is, it's much harder to explain and we kinda wanna focus on making microtonal music mainstream and not so daunting for people, you know? I actually have a 53 tone acoustic guitar, but it's just too hard to play, so it will also be turned into a 31edo one. But I'll definitely foray into 53 at some point.

    • @eriknatanael
      @eriknatanael 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ramiolsen Yeah makes sense! Very cool with a 53edo guitar, I didn't know that was a feasible number of frets :D I'm currently developing a 53edo digital musical instrument for myself to be able to play freely over the whole range. Although, for (bowed) string instruments 53edo actually makes more sense than 12 imho, with the pure 5ths between strings and all, unless you venture too far from the open strings that is.

    • @ramiolsen
      @ramiolsen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@eriknatanael It's not really feasible, hahaha, that's why I'm gonna switch... I know what you mean, with the pure fifths, that's the only slight annoyance in 31edo. But I think it's ok, you get a lot in return.
      I'd love to hear more about your instrument! Let us know about your progress and we'll feature it somehow!

    I love the video! It’s super awesome. I don't know if it is out of the scope of the channel, but do you think it would be possible to make some videos that break down some of the more simple microtonal concepts. One might know what a tritone is, but I feel like there is an assumption that the viewer actually knows what to do once they see the different flavors, I know that I for sure don't lol. Since not everyone is a theory nerd or even a jazz musician looking to spice up their jazz harmony, I think it would be cool to maybe do a break down of a song like your Between Dream or a JC song. Going over how each concept is used. Not sure if I properly got my thoughts across but keep up the good work, can't wait for the next vid! sina allouk!

    Thank you for a great video. I was wondering about keyboards in weird TETs/EDOs: the normal piano is in 12 TET and you can use 2 and detune 1 of them by 50 cents to play 24TET as you say in the video, but what about 17TET, say, or 53EDO? You'd have to use a programmable keyboard, or perhaps a virtual one. I wonder if you have any tips.

    • @HearBetweenTheLines
      @HearBetweenTheLines  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you liked it! Well for those tuning systems you need to decide whether you want to have
      1. a 12-note subset of them and change them with a MIDI tuning plug-in e.g. Infinitone DMT
      or
      2. you want to get a keyboard with a different layout like the Lumatone
      We'd recommend starting with option 1 while saving up for 2... That's what we did

    I use a half-flatted minor 7th to approximate the seventh harmonic.

    • @HearBetweenTheLines
      @HearBetweenTheLines  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So 50 ct flat? We also tried that a bit, but found that the combination of a 14 ct too sharp major third plus the then 19 ct *too* flat minor 7th, add up to a 33 ct off septimal tritone. So actually the regular 12 TET is kind of closer to the overtone series when you take into account the relationship between the maj 3rd and b7... Apart from the theory we just didn't like the sound sooo much, because it just stops sounding like a 7th to us and more like a really unhappy 6th.
      But our hearing habits change, maybe we'll grow to like it. :)

    • @ValkyRiver

      @@HearBetweenTheLines i created track stacks for each chord and then had one note that was part of the melody which was the reference point to the chord so the chord could shift around it. I then used the pitch correction plugin and detuned by the cents that equal temperament differs from just intonation according to the interval. but that mostly only was like 15 or less cents so i can only move one quartertone per about four chords.
      It sounded so bad because i shifted in the wrong direction at first but now that i corrected it, it is listenable haha
      It would be great to know if you use a different plugin or program though because mine can only shift up to 50 cents (using logic pro X included plugins)
