Just because a game can be broken in many ways doesn't mean you have to play it like that. It's up to the individual player and if they want to utilize it that way or play it the way it's meant to be. You all still behave as though FFVIII is the only game that can be broken, in the history of time.
A total NO to the Laguna section, those were thr parts that bored me from this game. And you don't need to break the game at all, lol, that is your decision.
I get emotional thinking about Edea because she's actually such a kind person. She was a woman cursed with powers, but gave all the love she had in herself to children whose parents died in a war, gave them food, shelter, and the means to defend themselves so that they don't suffer the same fate all over again. She also allowed Ultimecia to possess her because she refused to let Ultimecia harm any of her children. She embodies all the qualities of a good mother.
To me, Edea is a truly genuine person who wanted the best for the ones around her. Her story says something about the duality in people, but intentions are what's most important. I'd love to get more insight into Selphie or Irvine! Thanks for an awesome story.
Yes! Selphie is my favourite character and was a huge inspiration for me as a depressed teenager. She had gone through some terrible shit but made the active choice every day to be a bright person, inspire motivation in others and in general fought against her internal struggles. Selphie will always be my hero!!
As much as i love the FF7 Remake, i can't help but feel this game would had benefitted even more from the formula, specially since time travel is already an established plot element.
Yes, if they presented the store through your active experience vs being dictated the story, I think it would have made more initial sense and made it better received by fans and critics alike. Chopping it down, probably necessary, hurt its legacy.
It must have been a weird situation for Cid - he started the entire Garden establishment, knowing that ultimately the entire thing was only for Squall's benefit to realise his potential to defeat the sorceress in the future as fated. It also makes sense that he appoints Squall as SeeD's leader, saying to Squall that it is his fate, his destiny, to lead SeeD in defeating the sorceress, and Squall angrily berates him for talking like it had been decided since his birth. It had been - and Cid (through Edea) knew.
Edea is so well liked I think because you get to actually utilize her even if it is for a short time. Most FF games give you control over powerful allies for a short time but I wish there were more instances of that in FF8 in my playthrough I felt most faith in Squall who ended up being the only true overpowered member of my party
@thedagfather8807 I agree, there's a certain connectivity to the character when you control them, especially when their desired actions are 8n line with yours (the player). I just commented in a similar way on the previous comment--you can appreciate them more, like Golbez in The After Years. I know the game deserves little credit, but the parallel is there.
For me, the whole Edea assassination part of the game felt soooo spectacular, probably partly to Fithos Lusec parade and the dramatic twists. It really stuck with me as one of the greatest parts of any FF game.
I feel like the story of this game is one you have to play multiple times to really appreciate. it's so deep and there's so many things I didn't notice/pick up on during my first playthrough
Edea is one of several major landmarks in FF8 which captured my heart in my teen time. I played FF8 as a mean to learn English from reading dialogues in the game. Edea first appearance in Deling City (in her private chamber) was so overwhelming. I felt like her every movement could express its meaning without sound. She was a total package of main antagonist, enigmatic gorgeous manipulative and also ruthless. It was kinda fun to figure out along the story who she really is. I think most of FF8 players would consider her the official bad guy more than the elusive Ultimecia who never showed up until the end of the game. As Edea the matron, her conviction and determination is astounding. She has done her best to go against her fate. One thing i like about Edea is that she doesn't sugarcoat things. She is kind but she doesn't beat around the bush or mindlessly talk BS (like her husband did during disc 2 and 3.... Honestly i kinda wish Edea would dump him lol) to her kids. Her speech at the orphanage to Squall in my opinion was well thought-out and it's like she knew the perfect time to do it. She's one of few decent adults in FF8 (i could only think of Raines, Dr. Kadowaki, and Kiros) where some grownups seem to forget their maturity somewhere. Thank you for Edea's video... Since it's a female character i'd vote for Celes from FF6.
@DevilKaz i kinda knew beforehand that Edea and Cid were married. Still, when Norg spilled the beans about their relationship, i thought "the hot witch in an extremely cleavage-revealing jet black bodysuit is that goofball's wife?... Maybe it's not Deling she would've wanted to snuff him back during the announcement.." No wonder she had to have White SeeD as a backup team. Cid was not cut out to run a campaign at all. Picking Norg as business partner, allowing Norg's subordinates to push him around, and providing nothing useful to Squall (he even made a stupid blunder regarding Rinoa's state at one point) throughout the whole game. The guy is clearly super lucky to get to marry Edea.
It's pretty cool that Ultemecia giving Edea her powers is the actual reason why she can possess her from the future in the first place. Ellone can only send someone's conciousness to the past into someone she knew. Assuming the Junction machine: Ellone works the same way, it could probably let Ultimecia trace her power back to every sorceress in time that wielded it, and take possession of them.
Ff8 is my favorite ff game. I could easily say that edea is my favorite character in any ff game. So well rounded and the most humane character displayed in any ff universe.
Loved 8 minus the junction system, and before anyone says I was just too stupid/wasn’t paying attention as to how to use it correctly, you’re absolutely right.
I know how to use it, to the point where it's game breaking, and I still agree with you. It's just... not a good system imo. I mean I literally never used magic at all because of it.
I had the opposite problem, i felt it make breaking the game too easily, specially if you have the patience to max out every magic as you discover them. It also turned the game into a tedious slog as i was spending so much time drawing, specially since i'm a pretty obsessive completionist (i have a similar issue with FF9 and stealing). Really broke the flow of the game. Wish i had discovered the refining system in my first playthrough to alleviate that.
Triple Triad will solve everything. If you play your cards right (pun very intended)... within 3 or 4 hours of game time you could be OPed without the need to grinding the draw :D
@@trinquisitor_th2993 yeah i know about it now but i don't really enjoy card games so i didn't spend much time doing it when i first played as a game. If you know what you're doing with Triple Triad, you can bend the game over before you even get Ifrit lol.
The junction system makes sense plot-wise with the in-game "Para-Magic" system. I assume that back then, the Materia system of VII was more than good enough, and returning back to class-based characters would not fit with the wider narrative of VIII, that Devs needed a system similar to VII, hence the junction system. frankly I abused the hell of it, and by the time I am in control, magic is pretty much just a buff to regular skills and commands (commands are more important and interesting, not to mention amusing on some).
Out of all the FF Origin videos, I NEVER get tired of hearing about (MY FAVORITE GAME) Final Fantasy 8! Years later, and the story of this game is still awesome! And you guys giving me a history of the game makes me love it even more! THANK YOU!!!

ANOTHER AWESOME VIDEO! i can't believe how I'm always learning something new about this game despite how obsessed I am over it... thank you for such a well-made video as always.
When I was little and used to watch my brother play FFVIII, I had a lot of nightmares where Edea would kill me and my friends with her powers. That is, until I discovered she's actually a good person. Then the nightmares stopped and she became one of my favorite characters.
Yuffie please! Also, I remember on my first playthrough not being able to wait to take Edea down, but learning she wasn't the actual main antagonist. I think it was the first game that made me look into characters to try to figure out why they did what they were doing.
Thank you for that awesome video, I've always been obsessed with Edea ! Could you consider making a video on Lady Yunalesca ? I've always find her fascinating
Wow! This was really interesting for me. I never did finish 8, I had a borrowed copy and ran out of time (darn train sequence) - I never got this far into the story. Definitely a compelling character and with this duality to her, one of the more complicated "bad guys" in Final Fantasy that I've learned about!
So, you wanted a comment on Edea, she was the only female Opposing side Same side, Time shift shit that also solicited this idea of power and what the cost really is. Thank you for sharing the creation knowledge of the prime sorcerers god guy thing. Even he had to share it, so he chose wisely. and so did Edea with squall... A completion of the cycle. But retention of the nature of being a sorceress. I had forgotten just how deep, eloquent and yet simple/brief and never overstayed in You're Role Playing of Their Story. This game actually added alot of salvation into me. Even with how is is, there still is. peace.
Awesome video guys! I have spent so much time thinking about this game over the past decades, but am not really sure that I ever thought about Edea first inheriting Ult's power and then later being possessed by it. That's bizarre! As for the next origins, how about Lady Yunalesca or Princess Ashe?
Edea had been told that she was no longer a Sorceress before she left Esthar. That she'd given up her powers already. Zell explains this when everyone meets up again on the Ragnarok.
Please do Garnet Til Alexandros XVII! Her story was so powerful -- suspicion, betrayal, family issues by the dozens, eidolons; I always thought of her as the true main character of FFIX.
Yeah, but that's because the first half of the game we had no idea of who Zidane really is.. the plot for Zidan became so strong the moment we found out about Garland but before that Garnett feels like the main char.. Great video! But I think you left it a little unclear on how the sorceress possession works. I would LOVE a video on that, as I've found it so hard to follow as different translations say different things on how the sorceresses inherit power and what that actually means for them.
Pls cover oerba characters (fang or Vanille). I want to deeply understand their origins, when i saw your caius ballad origins video, it’s really amazing and i’m hoping you can explain also their life before the events of final Fantasy 13
I mean, while the public wouldn't have known, her other role, as the feared sorceress, was simply Ultimecia, not her. One thing that's a problem in a story involving time travel, what was to stop Ultimecia possessing Edea at any other time? Seemed like she could possess any sorceress she wished at any time in history
Hey Alex! Thank you for commenting, glad to hear you enjoy the videos! To answer your question... we're trying to improve the quality of our videos, but there are some teething problems! Fingers crossed we'll get it right next time! >.
If squall fights and defeats ultimecia (a reality that ultimecia knew would eventually occur) she forced her powers onto past-version-Edea, whom would be inspired by squall to create SeeD via timeloop repetition and setting into motion a series of events that would eventually reach Rinoa who would receive the sorceress powers. Based on the myth of Hyne and the origin of the sorceress powers, until a timeline exists where the sorceress powers cannot transfer onto someone, the world and its multiple timelines are held captive by Hynes magic which hosts women able to be manipulated into sorceress powers. SeeD attempts to combat sorceresses, ultimecia attempts to create a timeline where Hynes powers no longer exists...she is the overlooked hero of the FF8 story...
What I have noticed was that the orphanage design looks a bit the same, as the Deep Research Center when you have to go down to fight Ultima Weapon. They all look to be inspired by Roman architecture but at the same time, they could be related in some form?
Thank You! Replaying 8 off and on been stuck on triple triad(or is it tetra master i mix them up) im in the desert prison and i cant stop grinding cards for the card mod... I have a problem lol
If you are not grinding Triple Triad like 6 hours straight every day, you are still in the fine area. From a former Triple Triad junkie who grinded it 8 hours straight for the whole weekend, with 2 extra brains in bed.
Wow, after playing the whole game years ago, I got only about half of that information. Thanks! If the battles didn't keep getting harder and the summons weren't so long, tying together the dialog scenes in my mind would have been much easier. Also, voice acting and the characters having faces that looked unique would have really helped. When I tried to understand the game after seeing the ending, I didn't even remember the brief scene about Hyne and how it all started, and it is the one thing that makes everything else make more sense. Having so much drama and having no voice acting really made it difficult to follow in general. At least Hyne gives some kind of meaning to Ultimecia's power and motives--she is like the ultimate incarnation of Hyne's power. I just assumed either R=U (after reading plot theories since I didn't know for sure whether the plot made sense) or that the plot was drivel. If only it were directed better, then the story and meaning behind all of the confusing details may have come together better. FF7 is great but has the same director who spread details out too much in the same way. The major explanations of the plot of FF7 are also essentially placed as easter eggs, unfortunately--though I did a nearly 100% playthrough and didn't suffer from that problem. In FF8, along with solving that, more characters and character development, which FF7 at least had, would help as well. Ultimecia is basically a cookie cutter villain even with all of the possible correlations with Hyne. I didn't even realize the scientist guy was connected to Edea and Cid and that's how he knew Ultimecia even existed. If the game explained more about how he knew it was her possessing Edea that would have really helped.
Dang, I really need to play FF8 again and actually read all of these things again. Even though it was my first FF game, I guess I really dont know as much about the story as I thought. Learned so much about Edea here lol
There is a problem here with her story. In the past she received her power from a sorceress at 13 and later started the orphanage with Kramer. Or that or it is a bad time loop. Because Ultimecia transfers her powers to Edea and dies and shouldn't be able to control Edea later. Or she did receive her powers at 13 we continue through the time line and Ultimecia appears in a time line where she never received those abilities and passes her power on to Edea and the dies leaving Edea with the full power of all sorceress from all time. This of course implies that she will pass on her power and later it will make ultimecia even more powerful in that next loop.
This video made me wonder how she would have been fit into FF7. I like Edea as a villian. Also, please do an Origins video on Lani from FF9 if you have a chance.
Like, in a visual and musical sense, FF8 is one of my favorites. But in no way could I ever recommend it to someone not familiar with the games already. Edea is one of my favorite villains (?) in all of FF, but even after watching this video it really encapsulates how needlessly complicated this story is. Its kind of painful because it had everything lined up to be so good, but where it counts they kind of scuffed it.
Any possibility of getting an origins video for Aki Ross from The Spirits Within? Just thinking on how much development time was spent on the movie, there's got to be a story in there somewhere.
Personally, I second the votes for Kain, Kuja, Laguna, Ashe, or some FF14 love for the first time with Thancred or Y'shtola (would make for fairly lengthy videos too!), if not them, though, you could also look at Estinien, Emet-Selch, or Crystal Exarch in terms of other fan favorites from 14!
I personally would love to see an origins of X-Death from FF5. We don't have much to cover over FF5, but X-Death would be a good choice since he lost to Gaulf's team and Bartz's team, so u have stuff to talk about.
I have repressed memories of playing cards against Edea as a teen. That struggle was way more real than Ultimate Weapon.
I had way more trouble getting of Random in in Dollet. It was pretty easy by the time I got to Centra.
Alexander and laguna card want some words with y'all.

Hahaha, for real.
This game really could benefit from a proper remake, so that the developers can flesh out more backstory of the characters, fix the issues (mainly the monsters leveling system, balance the junctions and limit breaks so the game won't be so easy to break) and of course have a bigger Laguna section.
I agree. I think they could use a remake to really fix the issue that the game had with it's narrative.
Not the laguna section though lol

One thing that's a problem in a story involving time travel, what was to stop Ultimecia possessing Edea at any other time? Seemed like she could possess any sorceress she wished at any time in history
I would love to see you cover the origins of Celes from FF6 or Rydia from FF4. They are my favorite! Thank you FF Union.
I don't know much about 8, Thanks for breaking down who she is.
I would love to see a origins video on kuja
i want a remake someday with Ultimecia more fleshed out.
Thanks a lot.
As always, it's a really informative discovery.

Could we please do Vanille next?
Could you do an origins of Zell? And where did he learn to run around the world?
This was actually a pretty good video.
I know people have said it before but please do Ultimecia >.< You did Rinoa and Edea and I would absolutely love to see her done as well.
Man I love your videos, but how is it that every time I gotta raise the volume because you start in mute and then blast my ears with regular volume?
Hey Alex! Thank you for commenting, glad to hear you enjoy the videos! To answer your question... we're trying to improve the quality of our videos, but there are some teething problems! Fingers crossed we'll get it right next time! >.
Great video. I wanna make a suggestion for Kuja, as I feel Kuja is the best villain in the FF universe
Could I request an Origins video for Garnet Til Alexandros, please? Loving all the content, by the way.
Awesomeness!!!! Now Laguna,please!!!!
What does Edea mean to me? She a total evil babe, that's what.
What I have noticed was that the orphanage design looks a bit the same, as the Deep Research Center when you have to go down to fight Ultima Weapon. They all look to be inspired by Roman architecture but at the same time, they could be related in some form?
She deserves her own game
Laguna video next please :D
Wow! That's Prefect stay more Origins videos see you soon next video
Love any video you do on FFVIII
Would love a origin of Ultimecia 🙂.
Thank You!
Replaying 8 off and on been stuck on triple triad(or is it tetra master i mix them up) im in the desert prison and i cant stop grinding cards for the card mod... I have a problem lol
Triple Triad
If you are not grinding Triple Triad like 6 hours straight every day, you are still in the fine area.
From a former Triple Triad junkie who grinded it 8 hours straight for the whole weekend, with 2 extra brains in bed.
id like to see emperor Mateus Palamecia. I really like edea she knew what would happen but did it anyway. because she knew it was for the best.
Love it! Could you please do Zell too???
Dang, I really need to play FF8 again and actually read all of these things again. Even though it was my first FF game, I guess I really dont know as much about the story as I thought. Learned so much about Edea here lol
It’s funny you guys made this I just watched projared play through this
I like the orange logo better
Well now I wanna know about Ultimecia.
Also, please do an Origins video on Lani from FF9 if you have a chance.
matron wasn’t edea’s name at the orphanage, it’s more of a prefix and job title
Thank you.
Absolutely amazing listened to every single word what a LEGEND....
Just got the remaster on switch as it was on sale. Still dig this game
My favorite game of all time
Like, in a visual and musical sense, FF8 is one of my favorites.
You should do how religion is portrayed in each final fantasy!
Any possibility of getting an origins video for Aki Ross from The Spirits Within? Just thinking on how much development time was spent on the movie, there's got to be a story in there somewhere.
Remake 8 , 9 , 10 that's what people want . 7 was popular because of graphics and sephiroth the story in the original ends with a 15 hr grind.
was it really pronounced as "seed"?, because everyone around me during my younger years keep referring to them as "C"- "D""s
It would be good to see the story of Ifrit of FFXV.
Video suggestions; The Cetra and The Gi tribe ❤
You guys do the best origin videos for Final Fantasy! Please do Agrais Oaks!!!! I love Taitcs!
Bit of a stretch. But I’d love a Y’shtola origins video sometime. Can’t deny she’s a personal favorite. Dunno if I’m the only one there 🤷♂️
Personally, I second the votes for Kain, Kuja, Laguna, Ashe, or some FF14 love for the first time with Thancred or Y'shtola (would make for fairly lengthy videos too!), if not them, though, you could also look at Estinien, Emet-Selch, or Crystal Exarch in terms of other fan favorites from 14!
I personally would love to see an origins of X-Death from FF5. We don't have much to cover over FF5, but X-Death would be a good choice since he lost to Gaulf's team and Bartz's team, so u have stuff to talk about.
