As a huge Seifer fan, I'm just really happy videos are being made about him. He's a great antagonist but overall just a great character with a lot of depth.
I think that Seifer’s impact on Squall is also incredibly interesting as well. Seifer hates Squall much more than Squall hates him. I think this is due to the standard Squall has for himself. Squall is mentioned to look up to lions for thier “strength and pride”. Squall is always chasing this standard to be strong, fearless, and independent and Seifer is exactly how he proves himself to be worthy. Its almost like some kind of coping mechanism, because theres points in the game where Squall feels bad about himself for being scared or confused. Fighting Seifer is a way to prove to himself that he is strong enough. It’s obviously not the best coping skill because it gets him in trouble a lot and gives him scars. That kinda hits close to home for me
I have always felt Seifer had a special role. He was not evil at the core, but misguided along the way. I would love to see you do a video on FFVII's Yufie and her origins.
I'm basically Cloud in real life but Squall and Cloud do share some essential traits so I can relate. I've got a fractured identity and tend to compulsively latch onto a single stereotypical ideal and contort myself into conforming into the shape of that ideal. Also, I'm tripping balls right now!
to those unaware, this was actually a pretty bad translation choice: ”romantikku” in japanese still has the original meaning of historical Romance, a.k.a epic, dramatic, poetic. But in English, it just sounds like ”lovely”, or related to romantic love. a less cheesy translation would be: ”I’m gonna tell you about this epic dream of mine one of these days!” . But of course, then it wouldnt have been as iconic!!
@@SHIkun9000 Weird because that's exactly how I understood romantic in the English version when I played it. I knew in the context of the scene and Seifer general attitude that he meant the Romance from the epics/stories, etc. Not the intimate, love related version of romance.

Thanks for this. I just beat FF8 for the first time this week after not getting the junction system when I was a kid. I really liked the story, especially Laguna's. Very underrated Final Fantasy in my opinion.
One of the best antagonist because he is the living embodiment of the darkness sleeping in all of us that is so often on the brink of seeping out. His character was the perfect preview of what it would feel like to take that final critical step that there is no return from and that again we were all so close of crossing at one point in our lives. Witnessing the sobering descent into hell that became his reality after his choices was soul crushing when confronting him at different points during the game. You could feel the mental fortitude he probably summoned in order to present a stoic facade in front of his ex comrades when really he was on the brink of caving and crumbling. It was refreshing that Square didn't just kill this antagonist to move the story like most medias.
Seeing him smile was probably my favorite part of the ending. Because you really feel bad every time you beat the brakes off him. Felt like Doc Holliday fighting Johnny Ringo.
When I first played VIII, I was so happy that you can play Seifer at the Dollet Mission, and then I found out that it's the only scene where you can play him. I think they could've made him playable after defeating "controlled" Edea. I was so sad. 😥 Speaking about Edea, her design inside battle is just too detailed for me.-
For me, it was just too early. I'd ground the levels and GFs so hard that I still wasn't aware that limit breaks required one to be actively near death, and missed his Fire Cross.
I’ve always loved him as a character, his flawed intentions to be the “hero” was captivating. This was probably said by someone else by now - but I loved the detail that as the game progressed: Seifer’s overcoat becomes more tattered as his defeats add up and reflecting his tattered confidence and his unraveling. By the end his once proud and polished appearance “looks” tired and defeated. Then after he’s found himself again he has a new, pristine overcoat.

I have been thinking of Seifer as a brother to Squall. He even looked up to Laguna in the movie he saw. I also hoped they would realize their connection and come to a peace.
Seifer's surname 'Almasy' resembles the Arabic phrase المسيح meaning "The Christ (Messiah)" and he is always shown with at least one Cross in his outfit. I'm unsure what the significance is, but it was clearly a deliberate choice in part of the artists. He often is at the center of things and sees himself this way.
I'm glad someone knows how to pronounce Seifer lol! When anyone mentions me in their videos, they call me 'Seeferboy'. I try not to get annoyed because I know a lot of people don't know how to pronounce German names. Fun fact: some of my grandparents had the last name 'Seifert'!
I feel like things would have been different if squall wasn't put on a high pedistool. It makes me wonder if by squall going in the past warning about ultimecia and matron and did training seed and preparing squall to be the protagonist it made seifer the antagonist out of understandable jealousy
I like that all along he was really just an attention seeking bully. Its nice to see that he gets a chance to reflect on all his mistakes at the end; and hopefully, he goes forward to become more humble. Good video. I'm not a huge FF fan, but these character analyses make me want to play through the stories for myself.
Thank you for making this video. He's definitely one of my favorite antagonists of the final fantasy series. And I agree let's do an episode on the Laguna next!
Thank you for working so hard on these videos! I always feel like you really hunt down as much as you can and dig for every bit of nuance that you can reasonably fit into one video, and it's very satisfying. Even when I don't agree with your overall assessments of a given character (which isn't often), I still have so much respect for the way you put together the presentation of facts.
I know 7 is the most popular entry, since it was people first FF (it was for me) but, 8 was always my favorite. The story was well written (for the most part), paced properly, and the characters were so relatable. Each character represented a different human emotion. Which is why they all needed each other.
Seifer had more character than Squall and that's the reason I liked him more but was hit by cases of unfortunate outcomes and unplanned actions causing rejections, rejections and more rejections. Everything about him was relatable and I actually wished we had more chance of using him and hoping he was part of the final battles.
I kinda hope that Seifer was able to meet "Zefer" (see the beginning of Disc 4, they could've bumped into each other or something). And I would definitely love to see Zefer sharing his wisdom with Seifer. 😆
Seifer reminds me of the villain from Spirits Within, who coincidentally looks like the American animator who designed him and served as inspiration for his expressions.
No one thinks that Martine (Galbadia Garden's headmaster) might be the father of Seifer? They resemble each other alot, plus Martine has Seifer's Card.
This is an interesting perspective on Seifer. I always assumed that Seifer was the superior fighter of the two and Squall simply wanted to step out of his shadow, hating the constant comparisons. That said I completely agree that Squall was the target or preferencial treatment that he didn't appreciate. That's just what I think though.
Genesis Rhapsodos' Origins video next, please. There are lots of FF7R theories coming out, that cover Loveless and Project G. I'd love to see an in depth video covering his character, and influence in the lore of FF7.
I just noticed that Seifer wears very similar clothing to when he was a child at the orphanage, whilst the other characters' clothes change significantly as they grow up. I feel like that can't be an accident.
I was a kid when FF8 first came out and when I played it. I remember being fascinated with Seifer, thought he was extremely cool, and I always wanted more of him in the story. Because he could be in your party for the SEED exam and he had a portrait there and everything, I thought there could be a way to have him in your party, most likely instead of Zell (the 3rd member of the exam). I have no idea how many times I replayed the game up to the SEED graduation ceremony, hoping to see Seifer receiving his rank instead of Zell. I would try all sorts of little variations, but as we all know, he was never a playable character past that point. Heck, I started playing DFFOO with the sole purpose of unlocking Seifer and building a team around him. Here is hoping we get an FF8R down the line and more Seifer too. I would love to see who would end up voicing him.
What I liked most about him is how unlikeable he was, he was not bad because of the bad stuff he did he was just an arsehole which made fighting him very satisfactory. Great video, you really delved deep into his character without going off on a head cannon tangent. I kind of feel 8 is the game that would most benefit from a remake as it had great ideas but was let down by its unorthodox narrative.
I actually like Seifer. To me, yeah he's the bully but things could have turned out different if he had the backing he needing from the adopted family, and the kids in the orphanage.
Seifer is my all-time favorite FF character. Something about the corrupted heroes arc in story telling attracts me to those characters, and he’s one of the best. I do wish he had been made available in the various Dissidia releases. A missed opportunity in my opinion.
I really loved this game; I honestly feel it would have added more depth to the story for the main cast to be more familiar with each other. The biggest reveal in this story was how they all first met, not why they couldn’t remember. You could even have Zell be a bit of an airhead and not fully remember Selphie or Irvine, since they presumably hadn’t seen each other for nearly a decade. I think that is a much more intriguing story for the characters to know each other, but the audience doesn’t know how or why until the backstory is finally revealed. That said, the premise was great and the time element was masterfully done, not too heavy in the plot, but enough to make us scratch our heads whenever Laguna and friends would appear. The gameplay wasn’t terrible, tho you could break it if you wanted. And Seifer was probably the most realistic antagonist this franchise ever produced.
I always wanted to see a sequel to this game. I wanted to see Trabia rebuilt, Edea and Cid being happy, and seeing what happened to NORG. But most of all I want to see Seifer get a chance at redemption.
Considering Final Fantasy VIII is my favorite in the series, I really do like Seifer! He sadly doesn't get that much attention. If Square ever does a Final Fantasy VIII Remake (PLEASE GOD!), I hope they add additional scenes and gameplay moments where we can play as Seifer and see through his motives. While he may have been a villain at one point, and even chosen the wrong path, he still wanted to become a Hero and be the ultimate wielder of the Gunblade. But with Squall always surpassing him and defeating him everytime, Seifer was afraid that he could never reach his goal. Which caused him to become a confused misfit that doesn't know what to do anymore. There's more to it, but the video here pretty much sums it all up for me. Not to get off topic lol but I would love for Square to add more Seifer moments in a FFVIII Remake! I believe he's a character you can either sympathize with or feel sorry for. But hey! That's just my opinion. I swear you guys are the BEST channel when it comes to Final Fantasy content! Please keep up the brilliant work!
Oh Seifer, he does remind me of those idealistic classmates of mine who felt insecure towards their surroundings...It's like a quarrel between your friends and peers alike to see whose better among your peers and also there's the delusion of thought n grandeur such as getting praised by your teachers in class, when these guys are also goofing around, only to get their emotions change when their rival did something impressive in the class and stay silent. **and it happens around us to these days like you wanted to be somebody and you like this guy to be somebody else and thus animosity is build among rivalries. and the truth hurts between these two guys. Squall is like that guy who is submissive, strives for hardwork while bounded with morality and realism to learn things while Seifer strives to be famous among his peers like an attention seeker but has confidence and charisma to persuade peers around him.
Seifer was such a complicated character. Despite the drawbacks of the game, I heavily applaud SE for taking the time to create such a nuanced person. I always pity him, probably because we all know what it feels like to be ostracized, ya know? I will also echo the requests for Laguna. He is one of my absolute favorite characters in the whole series. I always bawl like a baby at the end of FF8 during his scene. Please pick this goofy dad!
Seifer truly isn't a bad character nor rival for Squall. Honestly I never seen him as much of a enemy in the game. He reminds me of characters like Draco Malfoy, and Seto Kaiba they want to be number 1 and get all the praise, but when a character that outshines them come along rather than trying to befriend them they want to prove superiority until the end when they are faced with the facts that they have lost. Hopefully when the hype for FFVII remake dies down Square will focus on making a FFVIII remake. This is TRULY an underrated FF game. If Square does this they'll leave Seifer's character the way he is. He truly is my second favorite character in FFVIII lol.
The rest of Seifer’s story probably was a bit more grim, and I’d like to think it went something like this: Little did Seifer know that the Estharian military and SeeD had formed a perimeter all around the docks in waiting. The only reason they hadn’t captured and executed the mass murderer on the spot was because Squall wanted Seifer to taste true freedom, even if for just an afternoon, before the rest of his existence would be spent in a cell or hacked to pieces. The SeeDs and students from Trabia, in particular, wanted to peel him like a pear. Seifer had done too much to just walk away. But Squall pitied his rival. And as the leader of SeeD, even the most bloodthirsty among them would honor Squall’s request gladly. Squall himself knew Seifer deserved the “death beyond death” with which Ultemicia taunted them. Still, his heart hurt for the man who’d come to define greatly his life. Despite Seifer’s spiteful behavior over the years, Squall knew he was about to lose a brother to only have a deadbeat father be the substitute. Suddenly, Squall was gripped with the realization that he’d risked existence itself only for his reward to be someone important taken away again, the man who’d driven Squall to be the leader he was. Despite all he’d gained, reclaimed brothers and sisters, Squall grieved over this final scar Seifer would leave.
Siefer... an intelligent and strong individual was hounded by his own self conscience. Him wanting to be recognized for his actions led him to do things that ironically would see him admonished. If you ask me, his story is a sad twist of fate that was compounded by his feelings of inferiority and instigated by others dismissive behavior toward him.
I love the fact that 20 years later we are still getting new content about FF8!
Caw-Caw, I suspect it will still be relevant in 10 years. At least I hope so...

Thanks that was awesome I think I will re watch this again
I like that all along he was really just an attention seeking bully. Its nice to see that he gets a chance to reflect on all his mistakes at the end; and hopefully, he goes forward to become more humble. Good video. I'm not a huge FF fan, but these character analyses make me want to play through the stories for myself.
Thank you for making this video. He's definitely one of my favorite antagonists of the final fantasy series. And I agree let's do an episode on the Laguna next!
Im so glad you finally did seifer! Plz do one on Laguna from ff8 as well.
I still own more then one copys of the original version of ff8 on ps1 it maybe rough around the edges but it works for me💛🤔💛
Same here. I have 3 FF VIII for PS1.
You are so welcome Sonja! It's so great to hear that you enjoy the way we present our content :) ~Darryl
Just as Squall was based on River Phoenix, I wonder if Seifer Almasy was based on Keifer Sutherland.
Seifer reminds me of the villain from Spirits Within, who coincidentally looks like the American animator who designed him and served as inspiration for his expressions.
I don't see that comparison at all
I think he looks almost exactly like James Dean.
No one thinks that Martine (Galbadia Garden's headmaster) might be the father of Seifer? They resemble each other alot, plus Martine has Seifer's Card.
Cid has it, Martine doesn't.
Cool I liked seifer I just wish they fleshed him out a little more
I just noticed that Seifer wears very similar clothing to when he was a child at the orphanage, whilst the other characters' clothes change significantly as they grow up. I feel like that can't be an accident.
Love ur orgin vids. Amazing how you can make me appreciate these masterpieces even more decades later.
Thank you 🤟
It was our pleasure
I never thought that much about Seifer. Thank you for expanding my mind for that. Can you talk about Agrias if you hadn't? Maybe Orlandeau?
My favorite character from all FF's
I totally understand Seifer if I was treated like him I would be acting out too
I never hated him, heck, now I am just as smitten as Rinoa??
I actually like Seifer. To me, yeah he's the bully but things could have turned out different if he had the backing he needing from the adopted family, and the kids in the orphanage.
The character known as the Warrior of Light in games like Dissida and WoFF would probably be an interesting watch.
Seifer is my all-time favorite FF character. Something about the corrupted heroes arc in story telling attracts me to those characters, and he’s one of the best. I do wish he had been made available in the various Dissidia releases. A missed opportunity in my opinion.
I would love to see an origins video on Delita Heiral from Final Fantasy Tactics
Fantastic work as always. That said I'd love to see a video on Delita Hyral.
Woah his birthday is the same as mine, strange how I've never known of that.
Thanks a lot, that was refreshing !
Awesome video! Keep up the good work!
I'd love a sequeal /spinoff that followed Seifer,Fujin,Rajin on a redemption arc of some kind
I’d like origins videos regarding the ff type 0 characters. They’re so interesting
FF8 has always been one of my favorites. I know all the flaws, but honestly it’s still a damn good game, and I’ve always loved the story.
Please do Yuffie, especially since her story is expanded far beyond what is shown in just FF7 and AC.
Seifer is the Final Fantasy's Cartman
next to maybe barrett, my favourite character ever
You must mean Barret.
In germany it gives a fanmade book (dont know if its still available in english) its such a great book about after ff8
I always wanted to see a sequel to this game. I wanted to see Trabia rebuilt, Edea and Cid being happy, and seeing what happened to NORG. But most of all I want to see Seifer get a chance at redemption.
great work guys!
Thank you so much for the kind words! We're so glad to hear you enjoyed the video :) ~Darryl
Kuja next? maybe Seymour?
Been anxious for this one!
aw... I love/d him so much when I was little I picked his last name as nickname... I still mostly use it nowadays :D
Thank you
Seifer gives off so much Slytherin energy. lol
He is pretty much the Malfoy of FF.
I would love an origin story on Kuja! As a villian he's really interesting to me.
I'd love to see a remake because they can expand on Seifer's backstory.
I love Seifer but I thought his story should've been told better and have a better ending. I just felt like his story wasn't resolved.
at least the rich ideals behind the concept are still there
The rest of Seifer’s story probably was a bit more grim, and I’d like to think it went something like this:
Little did Seifer know that the Estharian military and SeeD had formed a perimeter all around the docks in waiting.
