@@cdsellars87 Cheers Cody, glad you like it. I love Witcher 3, but because I haven't played the earlier titles yet I don't feel educated enough about lore and story to discuss it atm. I have considered Bloodborne and the Dark Souls games too because they're really interpretable and I love how weird they are (haven't played Sekiro yet but it seems like a mix of DS and Tenchu). For now I'm focusing on FF and a few other series such as MGS; but if I manage to complete the above games you mentioned, I'll be likely to discuss :)
I just subscribed because i fumbled upon your channel and enjoyed your presentation. My only question is this.. You cannot, if i remember correctly, interact with those in the present unless you have a relationship or something of that matter, with the individual you are trying to interact with. So what I'm outright trying to say is, how did Ultimecia have a previous relationship with Edea if she was none other than Rinoa? Just wondering what your thoughts are on the matter.
@@RG-df2lr it's an interesting one, but one thing we know is Ultimecia only possesses sorceresses in the game, so whether its a connection based on the shared embodiement of the sorceress powers that's passed down to her is a possibility, but I agree it helps add to the speculation of R=U too.
While Edea is one of my favorite characters from FF8, she isn't the first to have this kind of backstory or switch in FF. That would actually be Golbez from FF4 who, after being controlled by the real villain for most of the game, is shown in the remainder of the game and in its sequel to have a much more benevolent personality.
FF4 did something similar with the villain bait and switch thing with Golbez and Zemus. Golbez is set up as the primary villain, even possessing Kain (the secondary antagonist), only to have it revealed that some far away guy was actually possessing HIM and then he decides to try to help you stop the guy, only to fail at the last minute because he's using darkness on a darkness guy. Time vs Space is the main difference here, but it's similar, though Edea doesn't go to the final dungeon to help with the villain like Golbez did, though that's probably down to the difference in ability to just go there like Golbez and FuSoYa could, since they just needed to beam to the moon and use a MacGuffin versus going through time and getting past a bunch of stuff designed specifically to stop the only type of people that could beat the villain. I guess she gets enough credit for helping with the plan to train people to stop the villain, since she would know what a Sorceress's weaknesses are, but the stories are similar yet different. That's how you do this kind of thing when you need to rehash stuff in a long-running series. Addendum: In the Japanese version, Ultimecia's speech to Galbadia was much longer and more roasty. This is a classic example of that meme where the villain just mouth flaps for ten minutes and then they dub them just saying "I'll destroy you!" over the last few seconds of mouth flaps. The only reason I see that they even cut this speech is because she mentions making the Final Fantasy with everyone and localization teams always seem to deem the title drop "too corny" and cut it out. Kind of a stupid reason, since every villain in the series is seeking this "Final Fantasy" in some way or another. It's so flexible that it can be applied to whatever it is they want to achieve. Censoring this little detail changes the villains in subtle but bad ways that are hard to really explain in a short conversation.
I always found Edea visually intriguing and somewhat mysteriously attractive and you explained why that is rather well, "femme fatale, serpentine mystique"

Edea's shock breaking through Ultimecia's expression could very much be the case. I think this is the first time she encounters the party and seeing Squall again may well have prompted that reaction, I like the idea
I think ultimecia is the most intriguing character on FF8. Because very little is known about her. And how powerful she is. I still don’t understand the whole time compression thing it’s confusing.
Yeah I always liked Ultimecia because so much is left unsaid. It's generated a lot of conversation over the years and it's funny that FF8 is one of the games not to get a prequel/sequel because there's plenty that could be explored there.
The time traveler story fan in me would love a story exploring the SeeD war in the future with her. Maybe the main protagonist has to use Ellone's power to navigate the event set up of 8 before they get wiped out in the Time Kompressed world.

I wonder if there is an intended connection to be made between how Squall's starting GF is Shiva, who employs ice magic and is really his first initial source of power both at the start of the game and to defeat the first boss Ifrit....to how Squall is defeated at the final boss of Act 1/ First Disk by his even earlier source of power (support) Edea, using ice magic. Irony or Coincidence?
@James Gravil that is completely irrelevant to my comment. Why barf this common obvious garbage as a reply. Yes obviously Squall is associated with water and clearly I would be aware of all the psychological analysis as it pertains to that. It has nothing to do with the connection I'm pointing out, if indeed it is an intentional connection (which it likely isn't). But what is Squall's starting GF, is it Leviathan since everything about Squall has to relate to water? NO it's Shiva. I'm merely bringing up the observation that on disk1, he literally starts and ends with ice. Maybe learn to read a comment twice before replying with pointlessly regurgitated themes most FF8 fans would easily already be familiar with. I think it's extremely disrespectful.
Why do you think Edea and Cid didn't tell Squall what they knew about his future? Was it so that he wouldn't be crushed under the weight of his fate? Or were they afraid that by telling him it might change the future? Or some other reason?
Interesting discussion point. Personally I think it's a combination of what you've suggested. Telling Squall could make it a self-defeating prophecy, in part because he's so obviously insecure at the beginning of the game that the weight of expectation might be too much for him, as you mentioned.
Edea's character switch was a great twist when I first played the game. It's part of the reason I got stuck on disc 3... that and leveling everyone too high with terrible stats.
Edea: "Hey guys, it turns out I wasn't a sorceress atall since the end of disk 2, I gave my powers away to Rinoa subconciously!" Squall: "So how have you been throwing icicles around and killing things by literally pointing at them? everything you do is magic, even your outfit." Edea: "Shhh, I'm not a sorceress, K."
Edea is so epic and makes everything more epic. She is such an amazing part of such an amazing game which I always appreciate more w good analysis such as this ^^
great stuff bro! I've just purchased an original ps one copy of this game and am really looking forward to replaying it. I'll be honest when i first played it a lot of the more complicated character themes and story elements were lost on me so these have given me a lot of really useful context!

Όλα τα στοιχεία είναι εκεί, υπάρχουν και έχουν μόνο συγκεκριμένη ερμηνεία, μα δεν εφαρμόζονται με τον συνήθη τρόπο του να φωνάζουν μέσα από χαρακτήρες ο ένας "Είμαι ευαίσθητος", ο άλλος "Είμαι σκοτεινός και έχω περάσει δύσκολα στο παρελθόν μου" και ένας άλλος "Δείχνω πάντα αισιόδοξος, μα το τι σημαίνει για εμένα η εξωτερίκευση αυτής της εικόνας δεν το ξέρετε και ναι και εγώ δεν είμαι τόσο χαζοχαρούμενος", που είναι πολύ σύνηθες στην σειρά μα και γενικά. Τους χαρακτήρες εδώ ως έχει η υπόθεση και ως λένε οι ίδιοι συχνά, δεν υπάρχει χρόνος να τους γνωρίσεις επειδή δεν θα μιλήσουν και δεν θα αναλύσουν διότι ο κόσμος καίγεται και είναι δουλειά τους κυριολεκτικά και έπειτα και προσωπική τους επιλογή να σβήσουν τις φωτιές του κόσμου και έτσι τελικά τους γνωρίζεις μιλώντας σε γνωστούς τους και από τον χαρακτήρα τους που φανερώνεται μόνο όταν έχουν λόγο να μιλήσουν. Ένα μεγάλο πρόβλημα με τον εν λόγο τίτλο είναι η βάση του όλου άνω ως το προς γιατί δεν έχει αναλυθεί και το παρακάτω είναι αλήθεια. Πολλοί μισούν το Final Fantasy VIII. Το Final Fantasy VIII δεν έχει αναλυθεί σοβαρά όπως έχουν κάνει στα αλλά επιφανειακά διάσημα, όπως τα έξι, επτά, εννιά, δέκα, δεκατρία και δεκαπέντε. Πολύς κόσμος μίσησε το Final Fantasy VIII μόνο και μόνο επειδή δεν ήταν το επτά (το οποίο στις δικιές του γραμμές αριστούργημα), επειδή δεν έκανε τόσο προφανή τα γεγονότα αναλύοντας σε μωρά το τι συνέβη (exposition) και επειδή δεν είχε μεγάλα σπαθιά και έντονα χρώματα στα μαλλιά. Το Final Fantasy VIII έχει μισηθεί επειδή όσοι έπαιξαν το επτά και περίμεναν το ίδιο μίσησαν αυτό και μίλησαν πολύ για το πόσο το μισούν και ο κόσμος το μισεί χωρίς να του έχει δώσει μια ευκαιρία να χτιστεί μπροστά στα μάτια τους, μα για όσο αυτό ήταν μπροστά τους ήταν με την κριτική των του κοινού των κοινών του επτά και έτσι ποτέ δεν αναλύθηκε σοβαρά για την σωστή σιωπή του, για το τι έχει γίνει τελικά στο τέλος, για το πώς η μια θεωρία δεν είναι θεωρία, γιατί κατά αυτόν τον τρόπο μέσα στο αβέβαιο θεωρία είναι και πως ο Λαγκούνα είναι πατέρας του Σκούαλ, ενώ έχουμε φάει σαν δεδομένο πως ο Σέφιροθ είναι παιδί της Τζενόβα γιατί μας το έτριβαν στη μούρη συνέχεια, ενώ μιλάμε απλά για το παιδί δύο άλλων που απλά έκανε ενέσεις Τζενόβα οσάν να έκανε ενέσεις αλόγου (τότε θα ήταν άλογο;). Ναι, η Ρινόα πολύ θλιβερά είναι η Αλτιμέσια. Μακάρι να μην ήταν, μα αν δεν ήταν δεν υπήρχε και τίποτα από όλα αυτά. Σε μια ελαφριά σειρά γίνεται κάτι πολύ βαρύ που δεν δίνεται ποτέ άμεσα στην εξιστόρηση, ακριβώς όπως πολύ δύσκολα και πιο καλλιτεχνικά μέσα από τον πολύ ελαφρύ και ανάλαφρο κόσμου του για το αντίστοιχο της σειράς του έκανε και το The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Πολύ λίγοι έχουν δει κίνητρα, εξέλιξη χαρακτήρων, ανάλυση κόσμου και ιστορίας, μέθοδο γραφής και σοβαρότητα του παιχνιδιού και πολλοί έχουν σταθεί σε εσκεμμένες αμνησίες. Πρώτων. Λογικό είναι όταν έχεις να δεις κάποιον από πως ήταν στα επτά και οκτώ του, να μην τον θυμάσαι μετά από οκτώ έως δέκα χρόνια μετά, που τώρα που τον ξαναείδες έχει πλέον εμφανισιακά μεταλλαχθεί και όταν όλοι λένε πως γνωριζόμαστε να λες, ωχ... Ναι!!! Δεν θυμάμαι και δεν θα αναγνώριζαν κανέναν συμμαθητή μου από νήπιο και πρώτη δημοτικού, όχι τώρα, αλλά από τα δώδεκα μου και μετά. Τα Γκάρντιαν Φορς δεν σε κάνουν να ξεχνάς τι έφαγες χθες, μα ναι αποδυναμώνουν την μνήμη και είναι ωραίο κομμάτι της συγγραφής, όπως και το ότι οι χαρακτήρες έχουν μπλέξει σε μια χρονική λούπα παράδοξου και αυτό αυτομάτως δημιουργεί μια ιστορία για πεπρωμένο και μοίρα, μάλιστα λόγω αυτής της λούπας και της αέναης εφαρμογής της, καλύτερα από οποία άλλη ιστορία πεπρωμένου και μοίρας, γιατί κάτι που είναι σίγουρο πως θα γίνει είναι ο ορισμός της μοίρας. Το Final Fantasy VIII λέω ξανά πως είναι ένα Ντοστογιεφσκικά σιωπηλό αριστούργημα που σου τα έχει ήδη πει όλα χωρίς να φλυρίσει για να τα καταλάβεις σαν να είσαι χαζός όπως έχουμε συνηθίσει, ακριβώς όπως έκαναν και τα παιχνίδια της Team Ico, μα αυτά πέτυχαν λόγω αλλού ύφος ενώ αυτό σαν πείραμα απέτυχε, ναι, γιατί το κοινό είναι χαζό και θέλει μασημένη τροφή την ιστορία του, ειδάλλως είναι θεωρίες και οι χαρακτήρες δεν έχουν βάθος αν δεν μιλήσουν τον νταλκά τους. Το πιο αδικημένο παιχνίδι της σειράς και το πιο αδικημένο εμπορικά πετυχημένο παιχνίδι πότε στα όλα του (σύστημα, ιστορία, χαρακτήρες, κόσμος, κτλ).
Thanks glad you liked it :) regarding the remaster, you may have already read that some were disappointed that the characters were upscaled but not the environments, and that did jar with me in places, mostly battles. Also the characters being more anime and the FMVs keeping the 'realistic' style was kinda odd. But being able to speed up battles was great because the original seemed to have a slower frame rate. I ended up returning the Remaster and buying it again in a Steam sale, because it is an upgrade but maybe not enough to pay full price. Just my opinion :)
Am i the only one who thinks ff7 8 9 cgi scenes have been always the best in the entire franchise due to how it able to convey scnenes, feelings, emotions and actions WITHOUT THE NEED FOR VOICE ACTING???

This Final Fantasy definitely has a lot of story that can be explored. I think this was a overlooked Final Fantasy

Το Final Fantasy VIII δεν έχει αναλυθεί σοβαρά όπως έχουν κάνει στα αλλά επιφανειακά διάσημα, όπως τα έξι, επτά, εννιά, δέκα, δεκατρία και δεκαπέντε. Πολύς κόσμος μίσησε το Final Fantasy VIII μόνο και μόνο επειδή δεν ήταν το επτά (το οποίο στις δικιές του γραμμές αριστούργημα), επειδή δεν έκανε τόσο προφανή τα γεγονότα αναλύοντας σε μωρά το τι συνέβη (exposition) και επειδή δεν είχε μεγάλα σπαθιά και έντονα χρώματα στα μαλλιά. Το Final Fantasy VIII έχει μισηθεί επειδή όσοι έπαιξαν το επτά και περίμεναν το ίδιο μίσησαν αυτό και μίλησαν πολύ για το πόσο το μισούν και ο κόσμος το μισεί χωρίς να του έχει δώσει μια ευκαιρία να χτιστεί μπροστά στα μάτια τους, μα για όσο αυτό ήταν μπροστά τους ήταν με την κριτική των του κοινού των κοινών του επτά και έτσι ποτέ δεν αναλύθηκε σοβαρά για την σωστή σιωπή του, για το τι έχει γίνει τελικά στο τέλος, για το πώς η μια θεωρία δεν είναι θεωρία, γιατί κατά αυτόν τον τρόπο μέσα στο αβέβαιο θεωρία είναι και πως ο Λαγκούνα είναι πατέρας του Σκούαλ, ενώ έχουμε φάει σαν δεδομένο πως ο Σέφιροθ είναι παιδί της Τζενόβα γιατί μας το έτριβαν στη μούρη συνέχεια, ενώ μιλάμε απλά για το παιδί δύο άλλων που απλά έκανε ενέσεις Τζενόβα οσάν να έκανε ενέσεις αλόγου (τότε θα ήταν άλογο;). Ναι, η Ρινόα πολύ θλιβερά είναι η Αλτιμέσια. Μακάρι να μην ήταν, μα αν δεν ήταν δεν υπήρχε και τίποτα από όλα αυτά. Σε μια ελαφριά σειρά γίνεται κάτι πολύ βαρύ που δεν δίνεται ποτέ άμεσα στην εξιστόρηση, ακριβώς όπως πολύ δύσκολα και πιο καλλιτεχνικά μέσα από τον πολύ ελαφρύ και ανάλαφρο κόσμου του για το αντίστοιχο της σειράς του έκανε και το The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Πολύ λίγοι έχουν δει κίνητρα, εξέλιξη χαρακτήρων, ανάλυση κόσμου και ιστορίας, μέθοδο γραφής και σοβαρότητα του παιχνιδιού και πολλοί έχουν σταθεί σε εσκεμμένες αμνησίες. Πρώτων. Λογικό είναι όταν έχεις να δεις κάποιον από πως ήταν στα επτά και οκτώ του, να μην τον θυμάσαι μετά από οκτώ έως δέκα χρόνια μετά, που τώρα που τον ξαναείδες έχει πλέον εμφανισιακά μεταλλαχθεί και όταν όλοι λένε πως γνωριζόμαστε να λες, ωχ... Ναι!!! Δεν θυμάμαι και δεν θα αναγνώριζαν κανέναν συμμαθητή μου από νήπιο και πρώτη δημοτικού, όχι τώρα, αλλά από τα δώδεκα μου και μετά. Τα Γκάρντιαν Φορς δεν σε κάνουν να ξεχνάς τι έφαγες χθες, μα ναι αποδυναμώνουν την μνήμη και είναι ωραίο κομμάτι της συγγραφής, όπως και το ότι οι χαρακτήρες έχουν μπλέξει σε μια χρονική λούπα παράδοξου και αυτό αυτομάτως δημιουργεί μια ιστορία για πεπρωμένο και μοίρα, μάλιστα λόγω αυτής της λούπας και της αέναης εφαρμογής της, καλύτερα από οποία άλλη ιστορία πεπρωμένου και μοίρας, γιατί κάτι που είναι σίγουρο πως θα γίνει είναι ο ορισμός της μοίρας.
Το Final Fantasy VIII λέω ξανά πως είναι ένα Ντοστογιεφσκικά σιωπηλό αριστούργημα που σου τα έχει ήδη πει όλα χωρίς να φλυρίσει για να τα καταλάβεις σαν να είσαι χαζός όπως έχουμε συνηθίσει, ακριβώς όπως έκαναν και τα παιχνίδια της Team Ico, μα αυτά πέτυχαν λόγω αλλού ύφος ενώ αυτό σαν πείραμα απέτυχε, ναι, γιατί το κοινό είναι χαζό και θέλει μασημένη τροφή την ιστορία του, ειδάλλως είναι θεωρίες και οι χαρακτήρες δεν έχουν βάθος αν δεν μιλήσουν τον νταλκά τους.
Το πιο αδικημένο παιχνίδι της σειράς και το πιο αδικημένο εμπορικά πετυχημένο παιχνίδι πότε στα όλα του (σύστημα, ιστορία, χαρακτήρες, κόσμος, κτλ).

Thanks glad you liked it :) regarding the remaster, you may have already read that some were disappointed that the characters were upscaled but not the environments, and that did jar with me in places, mostly battles. Also the characters being more anime and the FMVs keeping the 'realistic' style was kinda odd. But being able to speed up battles was great because the original seemed to have a slower frame rate. I ended up returning the Remaster and buying it again in a Steam sale, because it is an upgrade but maybe not enough to pay full price. Just my opinion :)

Am i the only one who thinks ff7 8 9 cgi scenes have been always the best in the entire franchise due to how it able to convey scnenes, feelings, emotions and actions WITHOUT THE NEED FOR VOICE ACTING???
Absolutely. They used the limitations of the time brilliantly. I've grown accustomed to voice acting but I prefer the PS1 trilogy of FFs
