@@Dutchempireball - which is good and in my opinion it would be better if they got shorter still. I think that could be achieved with gradual lowering the weight limit. Teams have the budget cap so to pass the safety test they might have to decide whether they focus on the size and areo benefits while being overweight or make car smaller and ligher but with less aero.

I think they should cut the weight minimum entirely and rely on testing to determine what the cars weigh in at. Couple that with harsher penalties for reliability issues (engine penalties that increase instead of decrease)
I'd imagine the teams could build cars significantly under the current weight limits, without failing current tests or compromising significantly if at all on safety and reliability.
reliability is key to make f1 "cheaper" for the teams, if having penalties for new engine component caused by the engine making too much power that it only lasts a race week, wouldn't that just gonna make hamilton brazil happen again?
The engine penalty is a joke. Like you said it decreases as you take on more engines. That’s counter productive to what they’re trying to do. Also if you can put a new engine in the highest power setting for the weekend, that 5 place grid penalty you incur on the later engines won’t hurt as much.

The reason for the limit is to put all teams on equal ground. It assures that not Ferrari which much more budget or better personal arrives with a 20kg car while Haas is stuck with 1000kg...
@@UkuleleProductions the budget cap makes for equal ground, not a weight limit. if ferrari can outspend haas and want to work to the limit, they just make stuff that doesn't count towards performance lighter, and put the weight savings into performance gains. like reducing COG, more aero flicks and bargeboard bits, etc.

I would re-introduce refueling. A smaller tank should be less likely to break, is slightly lighter and doesn't take up as much space. The safety issues could be tackled by either high standards for the pumps or a supplier for all teams. It should be limited to about 65 litres (~50kg of fuel) to allow for a one-stop but make a two-stop the best strategy in most races.
Maybe they should also allow for more exotic materials so safe weight, plus remove all the minimum weights for powertrain components. After all, with budget limits on engine and car development, the teams should be at least free to decide how they want to spend their allowance.
Also, you could just reduce the minimum weight and see what happens. Maybe it's way too high and the teams can easily go below it, plus it makes a shorter wheelbase more appealing since a long one actually comes with a weight penalty.
Some other things I would do is to remove the fire extinguisher from the cockpit (it's absolutely useless, instead better equip the marshalls) and that weird wood plank from the underfloor and replace it with a different measure.

I think it's a big increase in the weight and it will totally change the aerodynamics, in some cases for the better, so whether it will be an improvement is debatable, but, the truth is, in upcoming seasons, using this template, the cars could get undoubtedly faster.

Small increase? They are almost 250kg heavier than their lightest point, and 100kg heavier than 2014. The trade off is huge

When I started to follow F1 like a fanatic since mid-ish ‘80’s(I’ve not missed a race since mid ‘89) the cars were a bit over 500Kg. It gives perspective that the cars are now near on 300Kg heavier! That is very much excessive to me. I would like to see the team that developed the new car stick around and give them a new objective of cutting weight from the car, I think 40Kg to start should not be too difficult. F1 could also just start by reducing the minimum weight by maybe 5Kg every year or two. Now with the larger 18” wheels, perhaps allow the use of composites(C Fiber) in their construction. I think that the 2m width is perfect but the length has become rather absurd in the last 20-30 years. That should be worth some kilos.
I’m sure my most controversial suggestion/wish is a greatly diminished ERS, or complete removal until battery energy density is greatly improved. I can even seen a path to a n/a p/u. Nearly all automobiles will be EV’s so it makes that whole “road relevance” argument rather moot. The only tiny segment where ICE’s are desirable, even preferable, are with hi-perf or super cars. So why not a 2.5l-3.0l V8, V10, maybe even a V12. But this would be ultra efficient and use 100% synthetic e-fuel. This would be a great way to further diminish the weight by a significant amount. I really miss how snappy, quick, and responsive F1 cars used to be. The cars are now very lazy and slow on turn in and do not appear lithe and nimble. Anyway, it should be interesting to see how these fat F1 cars get on. It would be nice to loose the hubcaps. The open wheels would be an opportunity for wheel manufacturers and I would like to see the wheels filled with caliper and disc glowing red hot. I’m not convinced the wheel covers aero effect are as critical to drive ability in close proximity to other cars as is being alleged.
For ICE part, it's not all about super relevance. Or sutainability. It's all about "Manufacture Incentive"
Looks no further than LMP1. You can choose boring small turbo-hybrid engine on top of extra sandbag penalty on top of heavier PU, or awesome V24 NA engine with no penalty whatsoever.
Guess what? ALL manufacture team choose hybrid despite all of the thereotical downside, yet still destroy all the non-hybrid LMP1

Pit Stop times will be a thing to think about too.
So, if the heavier weight is implemented in F1 2022, how will it affect turning (particularly, the Monaco Hairpin).
Heavier cars will eat the tires faster, but they'll still get around just fine.
There will be more load on the outside tires , particularily the front tire because that tire has to initiate the change in direction. So that front tire will wear faster and possibly create more push (understeer) in those slow corners when there is minimal downforce available.
That faster wear might cause earlier onset of graining.
In general: Weight is the nr1 ENEMY of race car designers. It has negative effect on ALL dynamics: acceleration, braking, cornering, the ability to change direction. That's why weight reduction might even do more for a cars' performance then 5 or 10hp extra.

can I find out which wheeled board was placed under f1 car after car has been lifted up a bit? so pit crews could easily push F1 car back into their garage
The biggest culprit would be the power unit. As battery and the motors contributed to the weight. There's also restrictions on material of the engine which limited material that brings less weight but too exotic for every team to use. Not only that, but the cost cap and part homologation were also contributed to the added weight
Now frankly the ICE was pretty much the same since like 1900's so there's nothing much they could've do. The electric system on the other hand, they could have a much less heavier storage option such as Supercapacitor (Used by Toyota LMP1 in 2015 and IndyCar next year) or a Flywheel which was developed by Williams during the KERS era.

The main culprit is the power unit. No two ways about it. I know WTF1 has to be careful what they say because they are much more high profile than they used to be. They hinted at it but never actually stated it plainly.
But it’s the power unit. Batteries weight a lot and are not structural load bearing members. So you need structure around that. Plus the energy recovery systems. The cars are bigger in order to accommodate the hybrid power units. This produces a viscous cycle where the suspension and other elements have to be stronger and this adds even more weight.
Safety was an interesting point though. I would just say, wouldn’t it be better to make the tracks more safe? The cars are pushing a 50% weight increase since the 2000s. That makes them more dangerous down to their weight gain alone. They have a lot more momentum. Why not work with the tracks to have improved barriers and have lighter cars?
Safety is not just about hitting the wall. If you watched the video, it said resist T-bone crash better. I don't think you can get into a T-bone crash by hitting the wall. Also, you said cars are 50% heavier, that means you just need to make the structure 50% more crash resist to account for that. That's not a big deal. Those 2000s probably aren't as safe even if you factor in the increased weight.
The 2014 cars (690kg without fuel) with the same power units were 105kg lighter than 2022 (795kg without fuel).
Formula E Gen 3 will also be lighter than F1 2022. At the start of a race, F1 will weigh 900kg with a full tank of fuel, whereas battery-laden FE Gen 3 will weigh 780kg.

The safety thing may be a bit more tricky. Since other measures increase weight the energy that remains in the car going to crash is higher and more energy is there to absorb. Which requires an increase in safety measures that increase the weight slightly more. They should apart from safety measures aim for an each time lighter car. This way safety increases even further as byproduct and they get more fuel efficient.
The fuel and safety hit that the bigger rims incur therefore is stupid looking at that being only done for the looks and marketing!

Isn't there a sort of rubber sheet sandwiched in the carbonfiber to make it stick to the car when it breaks? last season when a wing broke off, the whole track was covered in sharp carbon.

Just remember that a formula e race distance is only about 85 km and not always at full chat. An f1 distance is 305 km, over 3 and a half times more.
Batteries suck. And they are the main reason the cars weigh so much and why the cars are more boring.

I think what will be really interesting is that Indycar was really the one to again introduce the philosophy of relying on ground effect for the majority of the downforce back in 2018, and even though F1's design requirements are different and much more advanced with higher power outputs and downforce, It'll be interesting to see if a team like McLaren holds an advantage having experience in a series where ground effect is the heavy focus. Also, F1 cars are officially much heavier than Indycars as an Indycar, at least according to Honda, is approximately 740 Kg in its road configuration. Obviously we know which car is going to be faster, but it's an interesting development to see as Indycars, even during the CART days, were always significantly heavier.

F1 cars aren't racing drones that lightweight means the most, and the weight added into the cars just give them more grip, more aerodynamic efficiency and more safety measures letting drivers feeling safe to go fast.
Weight doesn't give you more grip lol, it makes you slower. 10kg of weight is roughly 0.3s. F1 cars are now 250kg heavier than at their lightest point, that's 7-8 seconds of free lap time that has to be recouped through aerodynamics and dirty air. And some people wonder why they can't follow.

It's a balancing act between safety, strength, power unit, fuel, body structure. As long as these desicions are being made with scientific purpose and good reason then I don't see much of a problem. As always the engineers will try to get as much performance out of these beautiful machines as possible. And still a 1000kg car with 1000+hp with ridiculous aero and engineering will always be marvelous to watch.
