      Alcohol can do everything from light to extremely severe damage to your body and personality--anyone who has any relatives, for instance, that they've seen really dramatically change due to their drinking over the years can easily see this. My Dad went from great, friendly, playful when I was young to sullen, unfriendly, resentful after 20 years, and then got even worse after another 15 because he really could not see what it was doing to him--it was absolutely heart-breaking. Alcohol not only damages people, but at the same time it seems to make them impervious to being able to see that it IS damaging them. Talk about bad.

      Aunt Barbara
      the reason I stayed away from that and other similar things is that I dont want to be a slave to them...usually people drink to numb themselves to reality..I dont want to feel the need to anesthetize my brain because reality is hard sometimes...if you cant be happy without a drug then you really need to change your reality...not take the drug for a temporary 'fix'...

    I used to drink regularly every weekend with friends for years and used to get totally smashed. But now if I even have only 1 beer, I will literally have a hangover for 2, 3 or sometimes even 4 days! So now I do not drink at all. It's unbelievable the pressure I've gotten from other people when they see me ordering just a seltzer water. When I explain the bad effects, I've had multiple people tell me they wouldn't know how to carry on living if they couldn't drink anymore. How sad is that?! Alcohol is so toxic and has destroyed so many lives. Yet binge drinking is encouraged and glamorized endlessly in movies, tv, music, everywhere. I fell into that trap for many years and thought I was so cool because I could drink so much. It's a sad state of society.

      heck yeah i was in the Military and we drank like it was our job.. and it only led to being broke.. hung over and angry. it also led to poor decisions for many of my fellow warriors who got girls pregnant at a young age when we were on active duty. many military brothers i knew were either involved in an alcohol related incident or were in a car wreck due to drunk driving. and i know of one good friend who died from a car crash. and he was a really good dude. i myself do not drink anymore either. i train hard i attend college and i do a lot of reading and i run and hike and scuba dive. and for a certified scuba diver Alcohol and diving don't mix. :)

    When I choose not to drink, my trick for getting the drunks to stop pressuring me to drink is to offer to do a shot with them (I ALWAYS order these shots so that I'm in control of the situation). I ask the drunks what kind of shots they want, then I go to the bar, order real shots for them, and secretly order a cranberry shot for myself. This way, I don't have to be harassed by the drunks all night b/c they think I'm drinking an alcoholic shot, and I don't have to compromise on my decision to stay sober. It's a win-win, and it works EVERY time!

But instead of saying "no thanks. I'm not drinking tonight" a million times, I find this cranberry shot trick is soooo much easier.

    • @sarahphinasunset3312
      @sarahphinasunset3312 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      OcchioniApotropaici They're perfectly respectful and understanding when they're sober, and it's not necessarily friends who do it. Often, it's random people you meet at the bar, or work colleagues, etc., who don't know you as well. Alcoholics are horrible for pressuring others to drink.
      I just find this is an easy way to keep the mood light and carefree by not having to scream "I'M NOT F**KING DRINKING TONIGHT!!! GET IT THROUGH YOUR THICK, F**KING HEAD ALREADY!!!". That spoils everyone's mood. Plus, the cranberry shots are free, so you can't go wrong ☺

    I agreee. As an inline skater, alcohol would just tear up my performance to pieces. Especially going long distances everyday in the city, I would hate to get hung over in the morning and continue onto my trek. I just don't see the appeal in alcohol. A lot of people who drink say, "you're not living life if you don't get drunk at least once in your life." I prefer to travel the world, meet new people, and see new places. That's livin life in my book.

    Love this video! I very much respect you for your position. As I'm sure you've experienced, it can get very difficult in social settings revolving around the bar scene. When I decided to cut out the drinking (and this was before I had even made it to 21) It was extraordinarily bizarre to my peers that I wasn't going wild on my 21st or partaking in the big drinking holidays or even just having a beer! I struggled for awhile with that feeling of being "left out" as well. Now- I don't believe there's anything wrong with drinking in moderation- having a glass of wine with dinner, having a beer with friends, all that jazz; live it up, enjoy the spice of life; however, every individual has to evaluate whether or not having that glass of wine or beer or cocktail, fits in with their lifestyle and overarching goals. For me, I have an awful family history concerning substance abuse. I myself, have had issues in the past with limiting intake- I just couldn't say no! And, at the bottom line, I just don't feel well when I drink. I can have one drink, and feel hungover the next day- which lowers my performance, not just in the gym but in all areas of my day! But it's not like that for everyone! So for me, drinking just doesn't fit. Anyway, my apologies for this novel of a comment- I just love your message! Keep on rockin and rollin!

    Amazing, i totally agree with everything your saying! Alcoholism runs in my family too, though I have never been addicted, alcohol has always been a hit and miss experience for me. When I am sober, i feel confident, in control of my emotions and able to converse how i want. When i drink, sometimes it's the opposite, even after one drink.
    I have been to some of the best parties, bars and clubs in the world,however those are not the memories that stay in my mind, it's the sober ones I remember. Now at the age of twenty five, I am ready to move on and experience life on a purer level, away from alcohol. Looking forward to improving myself socially, and as a person... The trick now is finding interesting activities outside of work to fill my time with ;)
    Again props to people who can drink occasionally and enjoy it.

    This February 4th I will have made it a year without alcohol. I went through a very hard time last year and was having a bottle of wine on a bad weekend night. I new I would be hungover the next morning and end up feeling worse. I decided that night that was the last of alcohol I would drink. I woke up and swapped drinking for a gym membership. Fitness really was a mind thing for me. It helped my anxiety so much. It brought me out of my depression and made me feel in control again. With that said....I fell off. Got too busy...was involved with the wrong people. And had a hibernating season and now I'm ready to get back on track. Your videos are helping me so much. Thank you. I will not give up this time.

    Exactly! We're blessed with brains (Aqal) that can reason out based on what we see what alcohol does to people..so why do it if it brings more harm than good. I was blessed to have been brought up with Islamic faith that does not allow Muslims to consume anything intoxicating based on the consequences but as we grow older, we realise why it is not allowed in the first place. You managed to use that Aqal..and that is a true testament of being a good human being; loving yourself. I hope I make sense. Love your positivity! So invigorating and infectious!

    I've been sober almost 17 months and it feels great. Still have allot personal work to clear the noise in the head and try to clear the vast memories of persuasion catching the low self esteem given in with my mirror to the world. It's still a pain to think about. But damn, getting the fitness goals in perspective without giving enough effort is frustrating. It's complex but you got a positive attitude. I'm praying I find friends like you soon. It will be a seemingly frightening change. But shifting my habits to the ultimate life of sobriety, fitness, and above all... fighting the gremlin in the head allot of us are familiar with.

    I love going out occasionally with my girls for a drink, but I can't stand people who do the crabs in the bucket scenario. While I do like having fun with alcohol, I don't do it often and when I go to a party just to hang out sober, the people who pressure you to drink just ruin the fun. Some people simply can't believe in having some booze around once a month, not every weekend. I'm eighteen and especially my generation places so much emphasis on alcohol and having a good time, but not all of us like that association all the time. My pact with my friends is that if someone doesn't feel like drinking you support them! Pressuring leads to dangerous situations like blacking out and even alcoholism. Brenda is right, drinking is a very personal choice and peer pressure is just wrong.

    Alcohol abuse runs in my family, and that is why I don't drink alcohol because of that reason. And this video I understand her point of view of not drinking and she has a point. My dad and mom were alcoholics including my older brother. And my sisters and I suffer from that. And when we go out like she mentioned in this video your friends start acting weird and in my case they called me party pooper, stuck up and conceited bitch. But they don't know my story why I don't drink alcohol. So, this video is very inspiring and very true. I just wish I people weren't so judgemental on people who don't drink. By the way love all your videos much love girl.

    I don't drink EVER, but I have gone to parties with friends who did drink-and you'd swear we'd been to two different parties if you heard us talk about them the next day. I guess my point is, if you drink then consider the possibility that you might not be having as much fun as you think you've been having. You should be able to talk to your friends without having to stay up half the night, waste $80 AND feel like crap the next day. Just saying.

    I get so much from your posts. You are such an inspiration. I too get annoyed when I go out with my friends and they want me to eat the foods I don't want to eat and drink alcohol when I insist I don't want any. It's gotten to the point to where I just don't go out with them anymore and it makes me feel like I'm missing out on things or I'm throwing away good "socializing" time with friends. But you're right!! What the heck am I missing out on when I don't even enjoy it. Those darned crabs. Thanks for your support. (Even though you don't know me, I know you support me.)

I was actually just telling myself that tonight.. that it seems like I always lose "2 days" each time I drink.. I'm 30 now. I've drank about once a week or once every other week since college. I had some breaks of a few months in there when I was training hard, but for the most part, I've been a weekend warrior. THANK YOU SO MUCH BRENDA FOR THIS VIDEO. I've come to the realization (with this awesome video) that I don't have to drink alcohol of I don't want to. It doesn't matter how much people push me to do it. Isn't that suppose to be the perk of being out of high school! The reason why Im saying this is because it's been so hard for me to say no to people cause ....let me break this down: I live in the heart of Miami (where people live for drinking), my mom's family is Cuban, so are my friends and friends of the family, and my dad's family is Honduran, so alcohol is like a must. They ALWAYS pressure me to drink alcohol so I can "relax," even my mom (I'm 25 by the way) cause she says I need to "chill"! Isn't that interesting. So thank you Ms. Brenda. Now I can stand up to every body and tell them "NO, thank you," cause being better is my true reason to not drink the stuff. I love being clear, focused, analytical, and autonomous. I can't do that if I drink.

    I've been sober for over a year now and will not be going back, for pretty much the same reasons as you. Your experience is almost dead on with mine as far as the social aspect of it, but I could really care less what others think of me. You also start to ask yourself a few months down the road why you still hangout with those "friends" that are really just nothing more than drinking associates, you have to ditch the bad in your life and find like-minded people. Instead of going to a bar try going to a coffee house or tea spot, outdoor activities etc. Solid vid, thanks.

    The problem with people who don't drink is that many of you are often condescending towards the people who do .....and you come across as very condescending in this video. Those of us who do imbibe aren't the ones pestering those of you who don't .....I definitely think it's the other way around and judging from the comments on this video and the undertone of your attitude, I'd say I am most certainly correct.

    • @MathandMakeup
      @MathandMakeup 10 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      i agree that people who don't drink can seem condescending, but ALSO people who do drink DEFINITELY do harass others....I decided not to drink something the other day because my stomach had bad acid reflux....and these two guys that were friends with my boyfriend told me that I was "lame" and not fun and that I was too concerned with weight loss....what the hell? there are other reasons people don't want to drink. it's a toxin that makes my stomach feel sick a lot. people who drink have done nothing but harass me throughout my life. I HATE IT and am sick of it. If I feel sick and don't drink, leave me the hell alone for christ's sake.

    • @MidNovembersDreamaugnov
      @MidNovembersDreamaugnov 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MathandMakeup I think it goes both ways. I, personally, respect personal choice and don't engage in harassment of others who choose not to drink. There are some of us drinkers who do. I just have a real big problem with the non-drinkers .....every last one of them (except one) that I have ever encountered was condescending. I don't care if you don't drink, but don't look your snooty nose down at me because I do. It's one of my biggest pet peeves in life, lol, especially when someone young like me, in their 20s does it......

    • @MathandMakeup
      @MathandMakeup 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't "look down on people with my snooty nose". sometimes I just choose not to drink b/c my stomach feels sick. I have a bad stomach and the yeast in beer causes problems as does liquor for acid reflux. if thats condescending to you then I'm not sure what to tell you. there ARE other reasons other than snooty people for why others don't drink. this is the last time i'm commenting on this video to say this. i'm done arguing about pointless things. i was merely trying to make a point that there ARE other reasons not to drink and tha ti'm SICK of getting made fun of and having alcohol forced down my throat by the alcoholics in my family. that is all. have a wonderful day everyone and I hope you do what makes you happy.

    • @MidNovembersDreamaugnov
      @MidNovembersDreamaugnov 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MathandMakeup I wasn't arguing with you though, so why the hostility in your response? I wasn't using "you" in reference to you, because I do not know you personally; my usage of the word "you" was figurative as if I were speaking to a non-drinker that I know myself. No need to be hop on the defense. I've already stated my position on the matter as have you. This isn't a debate or a court trial - you have your point of view and I have mines .....no arguments necessary, end of story!
