you can get perfectly good used cages from craigslist or facebook marketplace for about $100, even up to macaw size. pellets are $4 per lb in the US from the bins where they are the freshest and veggies are very cheap here too. dogs are much more expensive because they require real high quality meats at up to $7 per lb for ground sirloin. you can make toys your self for pennies. birds are not expensive if you check out the deals.

My Rainbow Lorikeet had metal toxicity from playing with jewelry, while he was being looked after by someone else for a while. He would continuously vomit and not be able to hold down any food. When I spoke to the vet he suggested to have Simon put down because he was unlikely to survive and if he did survive he would probably have neurological problems. I said that it didn't matter how disabled Simon was, I wanted him alive as long as he wasn't in pain. Simon made it and he is a very happy healthy boy again at home with me. Remember jewelry can be toxic too.

I think you forgot to mention one really dangerous and ubiquitous item: Cables.
Dangerous on the inside (copper), dangerous on the outside (rubber) and even more dangerous when plugged in (electricity).
Maybe it's just a kink of my bird but I have to be really careful when he is near any cable or he will start chewing on it.

Your channel along with others like it has taught me so much about birds. I had never had a pet bird until a little over a year ago when I met my current boyfriend. He had a cockatiel for almost a year before we met and was not aware of how to take care of him properly. We got him a little budgie friend a couple months later. They were on all seed diets, kept in their cages most of the time and the cage was cluttered and had mirrors. They were kept around candles and cologne often. Because of you I've been working to change their diet. It has not been easy, but has gotten better. (Their weakness is fresh parsley 😊) We moved and they have a whole room to themselves now with lots of toys and perches. Their quality of life is continuously growing. It's unfortunate that the general public doesn't know how hard it is to properly care for birds. If it weren't for TH-cam they probably wouldn't have made it. Thank you for all that you do!

My landlord varnished the hardwood floors on the flat below ours and didn’t warn us. Luckily we hadn’t gotten a bird yet, but that could have been fatal for the bird. I was angry!
Antifreeze. And those blue bleach cleaners for toilets that people drop into the back of tanks - don’t use them if you have pets of any kind. My friend killed her cat that way. And you can give your pet (or yourself) hyperthyroidism by using too many toxic cleaning products around them that spray in the air. Thank you for providing this information!

One thing you didn't mention was long hair. They land on your head or walk around on the floor and it's easy for them to get a long piece of hair wrapped around their toe or foot and that can lead to an amputated toe or foot.

@@tzxazrael no, it happens. Hair, even human hair can wrap around a bird neck or foot and cause death or amputation.. Good point. Brush your hair daily and empty the brush daily and do not let your bird pluck at it. Put your long hair up in a sloppy bun, a french braid, a french twist. but no long stray hair, esp. for smaller birds because it is deadly.

One thing that I recently had a friend learn the /really/ hard way (dead budgie 😭) is to be really careful about window and door screens! It is a huge project, keeping our beloved critters from eating all the toxic stuff in our lives! Just wanted future readers to get the memo re chicken wire. It’s a community effort!
Also, honestly I feel like most any pet would be able chew through mosquito screens on windows- and then either fly or fall out the window. That’s so likely to lead to injury or death, that maybe chicken wire exposure isn’t worse?

Great video, Jamie!! I wanted to add hair spray and perfume to the list. I'm sure you have them on your download.
I'm old school, and still wear hair spray and real perfume. Most times the dogs are with me in the morning while I'm getting dressed, and as soon as I pick up the can of hair spray, they line up at the door. That's my cue to get all the furry and feathered friends out before I spray. And I never put perfume on my neck or wrists because that's where Yoshi goes. Gotta get creative to keep these guys safe.

I just found out that I have been using a ceramic coated curling iron that has Teflon in the coating, and I used it in the bathroom next to my bird room 😰
There are so many products that are coated with Teflon that we aren’t aware of because they’re marketed as “ceramic coated”

I'm glad you did a video on this subject. Their is a couple that you visited and helped them with their Sun Conures , they also have a TH-cam channel Best Flocking Friends.. I made a comment in one of their videos about their ceiling fans running when birds are out and how very dangerous it is.She responded back and said it is ok they know they are there. They respect y'all could you pleading contact them and convey how dangerous it is with the ceiling fans going.

Hot stoves I used to have my bird on my shoulder while I was cooking and then one day realized that she likes to land on the stove which is fine if it’s cool so now before I start cooking I put her in my bedroom which is where her cage is and shut the door so she can fly around my bedroom but not get out into the kitchen

Wow! Thank you so much for all your videos! I've owned smaller pets (rabbits and tortoise) before, so I was aware of things like plants, soil and dangerous household objects, but a lot of things you mention in your videos is new to me. I love that you even gave a recipe for making my own bird food because I´m already very aware that store bought pet foods (actually for almost all pets, not just birds) aren't as good for your animal as they would like us to believe. Super happy to learn all of this before I get my little parrotlet.

Thank you for this fantastic video! I don't have any birds, but I love them and am unendingly curious about them, so I love your videos simply for educational purposes and just to appreciate your beautiful bird babies. I've had a few close calls in past where I thought I was going to be asked to take on a bird by one person who died and one who had a new baby & a toddler & couldn't cope, but it didn't end up happening. I was already fascinated by birds at that time and watched a lot of videos, so I had a small idea of what I could be getting into, but that was 7 years ago and in the time since I have learned a LOT! LOL! Anyway -- more things to think about here for sure. . .Thanks again!

Check out her videos about general things for bird owners, as it has brilliant advice for EVERY kind of bird. You could also watch ElleAndTheBirds th-cam.com/channels/rozpXn44uk0V9uQWFhxJuA.html since she has a green cheek and talks about him a lot. Lots of good videos about them there, too.

I inherited two parrots, a Senegal parrot and a sun conure, I’ve learned a lot from these your videos, thank you very much!!!
Story of my Senegal parrot: he was hatched est. 1983 and he had three previous owners (including my grandfather of whom I inherited the birds from) the second owner mistreated him and now he was scared of people, but I’ve gotten him calmed down and is now OK with being around people, he still attempts to bite people but still making progress!
Story of my sun conure: hatched est. 1998 She is very calm, very vocal too, but we can’t seem to get her to step up, always bites, but as I said making progress, only two other owners (including my grandfather) anyways, thank you very very much for your videos and as always, stay awesome!! :)

Would a cage with dimensions 31x20x51 be good for two cockatiels, (or two lovebirds or budgies.)
We have been watching these videos, and trying to make all the right choices. We haven’t decided on a breed yet, but would any of these safely fit in that size cage? For more context, I stay at home, and they would be allowed out often. Thanks for the info! 🙏

Hello Jamie Leigh, Do your macaws ever bite you? if so then do you need to go to hospital and get stitches done? My African grey's bites used to really hurt so I imagine macaws can do some pretty bad damage if they are annoyed. This does put me off from getting a large parrot. Should I be scared of getting one?

We are about to get a cockatiel and I have a question. It was mentioned no galvanized cages due to metal poisoning. We live in a large loft that has exposed galvanized AC vents in the ceiling. Would this be to unsafe to have the bird around?
