THIS ACTUALLY WORKS! It took 2 months for me I almost gave up but I watched another video about "why is your budgie scared of you?", and I think that our pet shop (where we got my budgie) scared him too much, my family told me that he always wanted to escape from her when she trying to grab him and that made big trauma for him :( So I tried to understand him and gave courage to do, I always said "You can do it you are so smart don't be scared I'm with you" and talked kindly while he was in my hands, I dunno how it happened but this night my budgie ACTUALLY FLEW TO MY HAND WHEN I CALLED FOR HIM :'))) even though I was too far away from him he trusted me and flew to my hand... I was about to cry, seeing him getting over with his trauma makes me really happy...
I had my budgie for maybe 4-5 I adopted him from a house where they grabbed him alot let their kids play with him like he was a toy but since I got him I never thought of gaining his trust of taming him bc I was like 12 or something my family grabs him sometimes, he never gets out of the cage also his very terrified of us for obvious reasons but I’ve been thinking of giving him a chance to actually trust me I just want him to be happy honestly but is he too traumatised to tame?do you if its gonna work out if I trained him?
@@GorabisnotGorab my budgie was terrified of the same. It took me over a year to teach my budgie to trust me. What actually really seemed to help, was first letting him explore on his own. After he got comfortable with my hands, i start to play. Crawling with my fingers, starting close to him then "running away" coming back and forth to him. I think he learned that im not always trying to grab him, that i want to play too. That my hand can be near him without him having to worry if im going to force him or not. Noticing your bird comfort level is huge and you always have to respect it and not push them past their own boundaries. You just have to show them that there isnt anything to be afraid of. Words of encouragement really do seem to help. The amount of times ive held my hand out saying "come on! You can do it" is rediculous 😂
You've called budgies "small parrots." That alone helped my mindset while training / bonding with my scared budgie, that these are smart capable complex creatures.
@Anita O'Connell - How are things going with your little budgie now? I just got one a little over 2 weeks ago and it's been harder than I thought. It's taking much longer than I imagined after hearing how people are doing with their birds after just a week. I feel like I'm doing everything wrong. I just wanted to check to see how things are going and hopefully hear that all is great. I'm looking forward to my little guy at least starting to want to play. Right now he's not doing much except for eating.
because budgies are small parrots. they are members of the parrot family. parrots come in all sizes from parrotlets to macaws. too many people out there don't realise that parrots are a family of bird not a species or genus. Budgies are very trainable just a little harder than some to gain the trust of due to their size making our size seem so much scarier. but not all parrots are so trainable. for instance redrumped parrots are rather flighty because they are small and energetic. but consistency and persistence and patients and even birds you would never have expected to be trainable can make great pets.
My current flock consists of a torresian crow-1yo, a budgie 18mo and 2 baby red rumps 3weeks old. 3 out of the 4 are rescued after storms blew them from their nests this year and last.
my crow has never been caged and roams the neighbourhood but he talks and comes when he's called and also makes a great guard dog. he alerts us to visitors then flies away.
anyway point is you should have considered your budgie a parrot from the start as that's what it is and my second point is that parrots aren't the only trainable birds. infact the corvid family is probably the most trainable but also very misbehaved.
Hope you have made all the progress you'd hoped for plus more with your budgie after this made you look at the bigger picture after watching this video.
anyone purchasing a bird should really research the species and not just the requirements and suitability to their home. because knowing the species in detail can be a huge help when troubleshooting.
I think a major contributor to this problem is in so many countries they call Budgerigars "Parakeets" which is an umbrella term for small parrots and create confusion with people who aren't knowledgeable about birds as they think parrots and parakeets are 2 different families and sometimes just 2 species of bird.
@@ESLteacher62 don't stress just be patient and calm and don't push too hard. it will come around. some are infinitely harder than others as they may have only had traumatic experiences with people. you just need to gain it's trust and sometimes if you over do it you will reinforce that fear. which seems to be when you push them after they lose interest.

Lost a beautiful boy a few months ago,had over 30 words in his vocab. 2 weeks ago got another one,I fear its older 2 weeks and still can;t touch it.

Was it a boy or a girl? My grandparents had one who knew at least 20 words and phrases. They boys really pick it up while the girls do not. It's not common for them to talk.
@@bobbooker4531 the more bars on the head, as well as the rounder and darker pupil (can’t see the iris) means it’s younger. Look for that next time you want to buy a budgie to ensure you get a young one. Good luck!! 🍀

Our macaw will go upside down and say "I'm a bat! I'm a bat!" it's the cutest! I taught her this because she would go to the curtain rod when someone came to the house and hang upside down. Each time I would say it and she eventually learned! It's a;so from Hotel Transylvania.

@Isabel Hello! If it seems serious, I'd suggest seperating them. You don't want to come home to a injured or worse bird, trust me. If their fighting is just minor, keep an eye on them to see if it gets better or worse. If one gets hurt from the other, you should definately seperate them. Do you know the genders? I could for sure help with that :) research is also very important so make sure to do a lot of it ^w^

I'm so happy you mentioned about the bad advice of leaving a budgie alone for a day or 2 to "settle in". Many many years ago I got a budgie and someone told me to start interacting with the bird straight away and ignore the settle in advice and I was in 2 minds about it because it went against EVERYTHING else I was told and read elsewhere. However I did quietly and calmly start with hand feeding and step up from the minute I got home and that budgie was so much happier and bonded to me from day 1.
Same goes for me and my cockatiel, Baby. You're part of their new environment, they might as well start getting used to you, too, right from the start.
Ok so i want to have my bird out of the cage so it doesnt settle too much in the cage. She mentioned how she would have blueberry out and rescue them when they got too far. I want to do something similar, have them out in a small area but if they do go somewhere i have to 'rescue' them how does that look like??? I dont want to snatch them but i also dont want to scare them. Its her first day here and i want to make sure she doesnt get too used to the cage.
@@pastrycookie8080 Personally what I did on the first day was leave my hand in the cage with some millet in my hand. I sat down on the sofa with the cage next to me, opened the door and rested my hand and arm in the cage, with my arm in enough to block the door. It took a few hours but eventually he sat on my hand to eat the millet. Be still and patient and try to get comfortable because your arm will ache. Then I moved to "step up" on to my finger, still in the cage. I did the same on the morning of day 2. In the afternoon of day 2 I left the door of the cage open until he came out on his own. If he flew too far he was already OK with the step up to my finger. He did fly off quite a bit and took a few tries at first but the first couple of days with my hand in the cage got him tame enough to start bonding and training. Make sure doors, windows, blinds and drapes are all closed to stop them from flying out or into windows. Never grab your bird, ignore if they bite and test the limits of your patience to be still and not force anything. This is just what worked for me. I think Bird Tricks has a budgie training pack and I'd recommend you get it, they know what they're talking about, especially with diet as well as training and diet DOES impact bird behavior a lot.
@@mattkinsella9856 thank you! I kinda just spent my whole monthly budget on this bird so ill look into getting it. Ive been doing the hand thing but out cage door is a swingin one so in case she did "fly" (she came to us already clipped) out i used the perch she was standing on instead of my hand, she seems to understand getting on the perch to get back to the cage so hopefully when she does get used to my hand in these next few hours she may grasp the step up way easier.
@@mattkinsella9856 I’ve had my budgie for 2-3 months and they are scared I’m in my room a lot which is always near them and I do give them some attention and I’ve tried to put an apple on a stick to feed them but they just run away.

I watched hundreds videos of how to tame your budgie it worked a little 4 % I am gonna try these tips too.
Budgie taming has only 5% rate you have to struggle for year but there are some lucky people who tame them in just days after all there is only 5 % rate you will tame a budgie
@@tangieee6592 that is completely false. Given the right attention and love, there is 100% chance you WILL tame your budgie. The only reason you wouldn't is from cruel treatment or past trauma and even then it is still possible just harder.

Yes! I love listening to them nibbling millet or seeds. For a while, I fed my little flock of budgies with plates on the ground of their cage so they could all eat at the same time. And often I would sit next to it, listening to their whispering eating sounds. 🥰
It's taken months but my (Petsmart) budgies are finally bonding with me. They will jump onto my hand and eat out of my hand in the cage. They're now very comfortable flying around the living room and using the top of the cage as their home base. It took a number of flights until they stopped freaking out about being out of the cage. I trusted they'd figure it out and they did. And I never forced them. Now, they sit on the perch inside the cage near the door and wait for me to open it so they can come out. Just recently they're stepping up onto a stick outside the cage. One of them is letting me target train him. Patience and time are paying off. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't happen right away.
I got mine from Petsmart also around Christmas and she is a scared baby but I try to communicate with her everyday. I hope she come around 1 day
How’d you get them comfortable out of the cage? My birds have been in my home for a long time, and they’re fine with me inside the cage, but they freak out when they are out of the cage.

This gives me hope. I’ve had my 2 for about a month now and they eat from my hand and let me pet them. One hops on my finger but I’m moving slowly with them. Can’t wait to give them time outside of the cage
Blueberry is so content sitting on your shoulder. She has no fear of your hands as you move them. Budgies love millet! As soon as you picked up the millet spray her attention was focussed on it. We had several budgies who would make a lot of fuss if their favourite food was in the room but not offerred to them. Millet, apple, lettuce, biscuits (cookies). Let them out and they make a bee-line for it!
when you say cookie or biscuits are you talking crackers or some sort of product like that or the literal thing
@@alteria2714 In UK we call cookies biscuits. We have many hundreds of different biscuits available in stores. Our budgies used to enjoy biscuits, and also savoury crackers.
@@peebee143 I wouldn’t give actual cookies or crackers (as we call them in the US), but I do use the crappy pet store seed mix as a training tool with my budgie. They get super excited about that and they don’t get it on the regular
My budgies snub beaks up at anything besides seeds. Even early introduction.
Chickweed makes them freak out even more than millet (if they know it already). I grow chickweed in containers on the balcony so I know it's not contaminated by dog pee etc. Judging from my experience, Chickweed for budgies is like tuna for cats. 😂 And it's really tasty, it tastes a bit like fresh peas.
I think it's really great that you're showing people that little parrots are just as great as the big ones. Especially budgies. Those guys are everywhere stuck in tiny cages because they are so cheap. As if price determined how good a pet an animal is. Thank you!!!, I think you can change/do so much for them. It's easier that people try to train big birds (or take them more seriously), but these little guys are so understated just because they are cheap :(

Nothing in this world is sweeter than a loving, friendly budgie. They radiate love for their person. More loving than a dog IMO.
In May I lost my little tame budgie girl and miss her incredibly. She used to come over to my shoulder and preen my cheek and sometimes didn't want to let me leave the room.
The others aren't really tame, they just come onto my hand for really good treats, but stay alert while eating them.
However, when I returned from hospital after surgery in August, I somehow thought I'd show them why I had been away. So I pulled up my T-Shirt to show them the wounds on my belly that was still orange. And they realised I was wounded, instinctively. They all came nearer and stared at my belly in shock. Luke then came onto my hand and preened my hand to comfort me- he had never done this before. I was really moved. 🥰

We just got two budgies last week because one was alone at a pet store and no one was buying him so the owner had stored him in a dark corner in a tiny cage and my 13 year old was in tears about his neglect. He is about 8 months. We went and got him a friend as well that is more like 3 to 4 months old and way more willing to train. I totally have seen him learning by watching her. He was afraid of hands but after watching her learn "up" and seeing that it was ok, he started to step up on a finger as well. I am so excited to keep up with training and making your recipes as well. Thank you for the great info!

Thank you for this! Patience! Patience! Patience! Mine was a flighted baby and it simply takes time. Lots of time. One day it all clicked. Big scary human suddenly became the scary giant that always has great treats! Don't give up! These tiny birds have GIANT personalities and are so much fun! Don't forget that these guys need sleep! Quiet and dark! Makes a big difference in handling them.
That is the truth about their personality. My first parakeet used to like sitting on my shoulder & she’d pinch my neck with her beak. I’d raise my shoulder to get her away but as soon as I’d relax, she’d nibble me again. I got the impression she was teasing me! She was a good bird. Sir Issac Newton! Didn’t know she was a girl when I named her☺️
Sometimes this takes looadsss of patience. It took me over a year to teach my budgie that he can fully trust me. He was only obsessed with trying to find his reflection somewhere in the house but just recently, he allowed me to scratch and preen his cheeks and that was the final barrier to break his fear. Now he comes straight to me when i put my hand out, greets me right when i get home. I love him so much! 🥰
When I was a kid, we had a Budgie and somehow managed to do the right thing. Skippy was super friendly and learned to talk and interact freely. We had to trick him to go back to his cage. I love your advice and would need it if I decided to adopt a budgie again, which I would love. They’re so adorable.

Your Blueberry videos completely changed my perspective on budgies. I think their low price tag causes people to underestimate them. I have a sweet little budgie named Saffy and I am using your budgie course, nutrition system, and videos here on TH-cam to try to provide her (or maybe him, honestly the cere is three different colors right now) with a healthy diet and an engaging environment. Omg! ❤ I have been trying for 3 weeks to get my birds to be a little less frightened of my hands after placing my hands in throughout the day. My birds ATE UP the stick training! They were climbing alllll over me and very interested in stick training within minutes!!! Thank you thank you!
I didnt take my budgie out for the first 4 days or so because he didn't want to but I step up training him in 2 days from inside his cage now I'm at 3 weeks and I can pet him and hold him and hes not scared at all. I hope I give him the right diet I can't buy pellets in my country so I have to make everything myself like chop and healthy seeds and grains and I use millet as training food and he LOVES it he is very excited when I come home and open his cage. Right now I'm training him recall and he is doing well thank you for the videos they are very helpful 👍
Mines are so scared of me. How many hours a day did you bond with them. Amd how did you get them comfortable being around your hand at first ?
Talk to them and put your hand around the cage spent about 15 mins talking to them for 3 times a day for 1 day then start moving your hand around the outside of their cage till they aren't scared of your hand then put your hand in their cage with a treat like millet spray most small birds love it. Keep your hand there for a while don't make direct eye contact with them. Its ok if they don't go for the millet at first after doing this a few times a day for a few days they should start coming closer to you hand to eat the treat when they do that don't move you hand for a while do this a few times till they are totally comfortable with your hand then move your hand around the cage while they are eating the millet. Then you can start to bring them out into your home. Best of luck with your birds
This is a life saver. I got two birds and every other training video didn’t mention that you can train two birds!
This class is especially helpful for newbies, getting them off to a good start. Parakeets are really smart, and if they happen to be a talker their vocabulary is amazing. So nice to see how Blueberry has settled in, clearly she is one very happy bird. Thanks for sharing.
We’ve had our two young budgies from a pet store for about two weeks, and they’ve been generally unhappy most of the time. We started playing ‘touch the stick’ with them, and they took to it immediately! They loved the game! They both are much more confident to step onto our fingers now. They’ve also been hopping/climbing around their entire cage exploring every toy with great excitement. These exercises are clearly good for them. Thank you so much! 💕
Thank you so much for this. Budgies are SO overlooked and make the most wonderful, intelligent, trainable pets. Plus they are affordable for most people, don’t need colossal cages, don’t scream, can’t really hurt you, and don’t involve a 20- to 80-year commitment. We lost our English Budgie, Dexter, a few years ago at around 8 years of age. He was was beautiful Blue Spangle, and and amazing talker. He knew quite a few tricks, too. After watching your videos, I wish I would have gone even further with his training. I’m hoping to get another Budgie some day soon.
Thank you for this, I have 3 tiels & a parakeet, she was a rescue, long story short, the previous owners found her in a chip bag in a parking lot while they were on vacations many states away. They took her home, even know they didn't know much about them. They kept her for over a year before they met me "The bird lady" They asked if I wanted her & I went & got her that day. She was in a tiny cage under a rat cage, the most unhealthy terrified little budgie I've ever seen. She lived that way for over a year before I got her. The first week, she was so terrified, she was afraid of toys & millet. Wouldn't touch them! She was obsessed with a little mirror in her tiny cage & wouldn't leave it. I tried for a month to tame her & bond with her & she didn't make any progress except more terrified of me. After her 30 day quarantine in my bedroom, I introduced her to my 3 tiels, after a week, she was a different bird! She fell in love with one of my female tiels, followed her everywhere. They share a large indoor aviary as their "cage" they stay in at night & when I'm not home. Anyways, she won't get too close to me, but she follows my tiel everywhere & my tiel is my velcro bird, demanding kisses all day. So I can get my budgie where I need with my tiel. When my tiel goes into her aviary for bedtime, my parakeet follows. Its a blessing not having to "catch" her & put her into the cage. I would never stand a chance at gaining her trust, but my tiel makes it possible. Sometimes a tame bird can help a terrified bird trust you. Fast forward a year later & I've made some good progress with my budgie. Thanks for this info, I'm going to try it!

@@michelehemlokhexwhite4310 thank you. Plan on doing a video on my birds soon. Just adopted two Congo African Greys a fee days ago that came from a really bad situation. The female is 20yr old & used to be locked in a closet, for days at a time, the male is 17yr old & very aggressive & territorial of his cage. Its going to be a LOOONG road getting them to trust me & getting them to eventually like or tolerate eachother, but I'm committed for life. ❤

I bought my two budgies 4 years ago, and they were very happy and bonded well together. They even were trying to come to me. Then one was horrifically killed by a toy ring set, they were playing and the one slipped down into the corner of a star ring and was strangulated. When I had to get him out, the other bird was silent until he saw my hand trying to get it off the ring. He attacked my hand so I had to take the bites to get it out. Then he was so depressed that he would sit for hours with his head hung down and rarely would come out of the cage even though it was open for him to get out.
So then I bought another budgie hoping they would become friends and as soon as I introduced the new bird, my older one ran to him and looked him up and down and then started dancing. Since then they are best friends. When the new bird saw the older one terrified of my hand putting food in the cage, they both started to stay away and now they just want to be with each other.
My advice is to never buy a dangling ring set with other shapes. Just get the circle rings. My bird was killed by the one with the star.

Perfect video! I’ve ordered all the ingredients for the healthy seed mix. Ordered perches, toys, and pellets. Even going to have chop made and frozen a few days before I pick up my Budgie! Next I will get a nice big cage......then when everything is ready I’m going to have “blueberry” of my own!!! I’m so excited!!! Thank your daughter for me! Withholding food during training was the best thing for me. I have had them for about 8 months and theyve never tried to come close to me. I took their food out overnight and i tried using millet in my hand. First day they were perching on my hand and eating from it! Best advice ive heard! They are definitely food motivated!

This is super helpful! I totally agree with the cage thing because my budgie is already tame and isn't afraid of me but she is afraid of being outside of her cage. When I first got her she was already cage bound so I'm having a hard time getting her to hang out outside, but we're making progress. So it's very important to get your bird used to the outside world as soon as possible!
The genuine affection and intelligence of a budgie compared to the really low cost of purchase and maintenance makes them one of the most amazing bargains one can ever find in any aspect of normal life. Whoever said you can't buy love, they never purchased a budgie. Same goes almost as much for cockatiels (my cockatiel, Baby, insisted I say)....

What a lovely video, such great advice! Blueberry is such a cutie. I don't have a budgie (or any bird) but would like to have one in the future when I have more space. I watch your videos quite often because it's so nice to see someone interact with these animals so lovingly and with such amazing knowledge and understanding of their needs and quirks. I also feel like your videos are preparing me really well for when I will finally bring home my first bird, and some of your advice is really universal, for example what you're saying here about holding the bird even though it's terrified. I have a turtle, and even though they're not pets to be held or touched a lot at all, it's helpful for them to learn that it's okay to be held in a hand (for when it's time to go to the vet, for example), and some people just hold them until they stop scratching and wiggling around and basically give up even though they're terrified. I tried putting my hand under my turtle in the water and letting her "sit" in my palm, but she can swim away whenever she wants (and gets a treat after), and then putting a treat in my palm and letting her swim into my palm to take it, and then holding her in the water, and she has become very trusting that way and I can now hold her even outside of the water and she is cool with it. I only fully realized what I was doing and why I was doing it after watching some of your videos where you talk about these things, and I am glad to have (consciously) learned something that enables me to interact more positively with animals. Everybody has been telling me let my birds to stay in the cage for two weeks they can get used to it, what you said makes a lot of sense and today I went to diamond and touched her and pearl I touched her and I didn’t mind very much, but I could tell that they were very paranoid and had a lot of Anxiety, and I was so upset by saying that switch I to shut their cage and let them be for the night

I found just sitting nearby but still at a distance to their cage helps and slowly moving your seat closer. Each day to just get use to your presence. Oh and be careful if you let them out. I lost count the amount of times I had to help my first budgie unstuck from somewhere. (The underneath of my bed had some fabric hanging down in easy to get stuck in bunches. That might be what helped in getting her use to me. She might have started to see my hand as a safe place idk. Though she still doesn’t like being held if she can’t move her wings which is why I keep that to only if I need to get either of mine into the travel cage for the vet if needed)

This video was great - not a budgie owner, but I just got a foster ringneck yesterday and she is terrified!! She's only a year old and her family said she was "unfriendly" because she was so shy. Not even our species coordinator let her out of the cage for the week she was there, but we opened the door the minute she left (coordinator wouldn't let us start her out of the cage), but she came out right away! ❤ she won't take food from my hand yet but I'm excited for her future!!

I am loving your budgie videos, and they have helped my 8-year-old, talking, affectionate, bonded budgie to have an even better life. We moved about a year and a half ago and he'd been less active than in his old home. I've now added flight training, having him fly to different parts of the room, trick training, new foods, and more--and his confidence and happiness have grown so much. We're going to keep it up and look forward to seeing more from you and Blueberry!
I had a parakeet just show up half starved in my yard two day ago. His poor chest feels like a razor blade. This will helpe get him more comfortable and know that I'm his friend.
You make it sound easy! There are some points In my parakeets training that I just broke down… I have 2 wild parakeets, neither are taimed, they are super scared, I have had them for almost a year. I have tried working with them and trying to gain trust. I can’t seem to tame them. I’m trying to find someone else to tame them for me.
I relate to this so much. My two budgies are so scared of hands and they will only go on my hand for millet when I've given them pellets. I found that if they spend more time with me out side of the cage but not with me hovering over them and training them, they get more comfortable and are more comfortable with me.

I hope you (or someone else) managed to tame your birds, I relate strongly to the struggles you were having, as I've had the same trouble with my bird for far too long. It's a long story, but I'm a live-in caregiver for my mom and she is the one who unexpectedly bought three parakeets at a pet store three or four years ago. We knew nothing of how to care for birds (she'd had birds in the past and so she thought she understood how to care for them... not so much) and we did EVERYthing wrong, most importantly, we didn't know to separate them or stagger bringing them home - in order to bond with and tame each one, therefore, all three are still untamed. Sadly, we've lost two of them and I have no idea why. The third bird is actually the one I claimed for myself, Sissy Spacek, a pale yellow little treasure, and though I've endlessly worried about Sis being lonely without her mate, my mom flatly refuses to get another bird. Therefore, I do all I can to spend hours each day, singing and chatting to her, just letting her know she still has a companion, even if she's mostly still terrified of me. It's clear she longs for connection, we'll make progress here and there but setbacks happen so easily. If only we could cross that divide between fear and trust, if only she knew how happy I can make her if she'd just let me near... In any case, I didn't intend for this to be so lengthy, I just hope you and your birds are in a better place.
@@tokamohamed4078 Because my bird is still entirely untamed and I don't want to clip her wings, I'm scared of her injuring herself outside of the cage. The house isn't terribly bird-situated... Our other, late bird, escaped a few times and slammed into the sliding glass door. I was horrified. So while it's also agonizing to have a lovely, sweet little bird stuck in her cage all the time (and it truly is, I wish I'd done it all differently) I'm so afraid for her safety. I'll work on getting a large perch, and try to close curtains and make the room safer. Anyway, it's comforting to know I'm not the only one struggling to tame my bird.

I made the mistake you mentioned of trying to hold my budgie in my hands to calm him down. He no longer trusts me and screams whenever I come near. I've tried to regain his trust for months with no success. I share my story with others so that they will take you seriously when you caution them not to handle or hold their new budgie to "tame" him. My story is especially sad because my budgie was stepping up when I purchased him. After his wing feathers grew in (he was clipped in the store), he would no longer step up or come when I offered him millet for a treat. That's when I brought him back to the pet store to interact with other trained budgies and tried the holding technique. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Both of us have paid the price for my mistake. It's too late for me and my budgie but maybe someone else will read this and avoid making the same bad mistake. ❤ Good luck, everyone!
