Sanding and wood finishings are very personal. In this video, I'll show you how I sand my wood bowls when I'm done turning on the lathe. Hopefully, you'll be able to learn my technique for sanding wood bowls and incorporate some specific tips to into your sanding routine.

I think I finally learned some different techniques of sanding. I used to make pens and enjo the turning process, and then enjoyed the outcome. I like the fact of you teaching that I really don’t start sanding so much, until after I turn the outside, put a tenon on it, turn the bowl around in the chuck, make the bowl round again, THEN, sand the outside.
You have motivated me to start turning bowls. I appreciate your videos and teaching.

Finally.....an decent explanation of the process of finishing the bowl by sanding! Your points regarding a very good light as well as safety measures regarding the dust are perfect and cannot be mentioned enough. I try to mitigate these issues by moving the operations outside of my work shed (when possible); however, the safety points are still applicable. Take care Kent and stay healthy.

Good question. It's still bare wood. I might try mineral oil on the cut off section and see how that works first.

Kent, as usual, you have produced another great video. I appreciate how you break down a particular process and explain the details in a logical manner, to help all of us become better wood turners. In viewing this video, I did not see what speed your lathe was set at for using the 3" sanding disk on this bowl, and what the size the bowl is. I understand that sanding is done at a reduced speed, and the larger the bowl, the slower you should be going in the turning and sanding processes. I will watch the video again. Thanks so much for taking the time to share all this information!
Good question. I simply reduce the speed to about half the speed I was using to turn. I don't turn with an RPM readout, so I do my speed setting by feel. I have a video coming in a few weeks about lathe speed. Stay tuned.
Thank you for all the information. I am in the process of sanding a bowl that was ruff turn in 04. I am new at turnig bowl like these and have spent couple of days working on it and a few hours today sanding it. It is almo sd t there but with your information I think I can do it better. I like to add to your video what I didn't hear you say and what I do. When I am done sanding with each grit I always vacuum or blow blow off the sand paper grit and dust before I go to my next grit. This helps alot with scratches from the previous grit.

Thank you Kent. I don't have a lathe but I'm addicted to watching your videos on turning. I know you and other turners will disagree with using wood carving discs but my spinal cord injuries limit to what I can do. But I'm so inspired by your work. I bought a pc of Honduran Mahogany( 6"×6"×2") on Ebay and I'm going to try to make a cigar ashtray with a carving disc. I would love to see you turn a cigar ashtray out of cherry or a exotic pc like Zebrawood. Thanks again for your inspiration and your talent. GOD bless you.

Always a great lesson, thank you for your inspirational videos! One shortcut I always use is I stop after 320 grit sandpaper. For my final sanding, prior to applying the final finish is best done with 0000 steel wool with the RPMs at least 1000. It makes the wood shine and it is a smoother finish than 800 or 1000 grit sandpaper. Works great. Happy turning! :)

Another wonderful video, Kent. Sanding is not a pleasant part of turning for me but you’ve given me a few tips that may may improve this process. Most of my bowls are small so using power tools can be problematic since there is little space. Hand sanding, especially end grain, is laborious and can cramp up my hand. Most of my pads are two inch on a small, oscillating air sander. It works fairly well but I also need hearing protection as well. I think an electric tool would have been better for me.

Like everyone else I think the video is really great! Being a basic beginner sometimes I get a bit bewildered by the different accessories that are used - like what you use on a drill for the sanding - because I don't have that and the accessory used to hold the bowl in place after halving in the video in making two in one!

A friend recommended your videos. I am watching them in order from oldest to newest. A really great set of lessons. I was just wondering if you use different rotation directions on your drill motor depending upon which part of a bowl you are sanding. ( I just finished the one on American Chestnut ) Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and skills. Dave
What I've been using on the outside of my bowls (now that I've eliminated the problem of them exploding) is a tool I've been using in my furniture refinishing business for over thirty years now; an air driven random orbit sander such as Dynabrade which in itself uses an orbital combined with an oscillation motion. Its super fast and leaves an amazing finish. It also allows you to use the entire surface of the sandpaper disc as opposed to just the edges. And because of that one fact there is no fighting it as happens with a disc which has but one motion much like that of a grinder. Sadly the machine itself is too large to fit into a deeper or smaller bowl, but a five inch pad will get into a shallow or wider bowl similar to the one you are using for this demo. #abrokenbowl

Hi, Ken! Each of your videos is very informative. But I do not stop at 320, and sometimes go up to 400, 600 and then grind felt. 320 consider too rough skin! Only then I use oil and wax. Thank you for explaining the directions of grinding!!!

Hi Kent. Your take on sanding is much appreciated. I've been making smaller pieces such as a 100mm (4") bowl. I've found sanding difficult but imagine less so as I incorporate more of your techniques. As a novice turner (6 months) I wonder if a better strategy would be to turn larger bowls (8 and 9 inches) to practice technique and create bowls. With my Laguna, I can go up to 12" inboard and 16" outboard. Cheers, Al

Hello Mat in Argentina! Yes, you can do that, but I find that the moisture in most wood will raise it naturally. Remember we aren't turning 100% dry wood most of the time. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

Thanks. Weigh it on a postage scale over several days or a few weeks. If no weight change, it is equalized and as dry as it will be.

Great video Kent. I never paid attention to the grain, now I will watch it. I will have to check the center sanding too. Is the remote control the only control for your lathe? Looks like it has speed, forward/reverse, besides on/off. I've thought of a remote for my Powematic, would like all the controls that are in the headstock. Anyways, thanks.
Yes it is and it's magnetic so it attaches to the lathe whereve you need it. One of the features I love about the Robust Sweet 16.

Thanks, No, I don't do much wet sanding. But you can if you want to get into the 600+ grits

Very useful video Kent on sanding, thanks. I note you say you can do all these stages on green wood but isn’t it normal to dry the wood first (I use the microwave method) and then finish the turning before sanding and finishing as moisture locked into the wood might cause damage or rot later?
That is correct. However, green wood turned to final thickness will dry quickly. Some touch up sanding might be necessary, but not much. Happy Turning!

Good idea to clean after "each grid" with damp cloth or minerial spirit.
Also use steel wool for cleaning the dust off before and after the first coat of finish. Sanding is half of the job of turning. Don't cut corners.

Really helpful topic, Kent. Normally I would just sand the bowl without considering the grain orientation. by the way, how do you know when its time to throw away the sandpaper? I suppose each piece loses its grit after repeated uses.
Jay, great question! The sandpaper will not last long. Of course, the wood plays a factor but most paper will dull quickly. Run your finger over an unused sandpaper disk. If it's very different compared to the one being used, it's time to change. I heard someone once say, "use the sandpaper and sanding disks like someone else is paying for them." LOL A dull piece of sandpaper is like a dull bowl gouge. They aren't doing much and you're getting poor results.
A "Mile-High" Howdy! I've been spindle turning for decades. Your videos and E classes have me motivated to try small boowls on my midi-lathe. I've found a source for sanding mandrels and 2" Abranet discs. I thought I would use my drill as a power source. I did notice, on line, the manual sanding handles. They have "stationary" and "rotating pads. What's your personal opinions on these types. Appreciate it! Ol' dude, Ed (35 yrs. times a couple, plus a bit)
That is awesome! I was just west of you possibly and a mile higher. Drove over Loveland Pass earlier this week. Beautiful country and the aspens are stunning right now!
The stationary or kinetic pads are good, but I think they are more appropriate for spindle turnings. You really want to take the time to work the edge with the wood grain in order to remove scratch marks. And that needs to be done with the lathe off.
Thanks Kent. What you say makes perfect sense now that I've heard it. Plus, when I spend the extra money on the rotary type I'll just tell my wife, "Kent made me do it!" Yes, Colorado is an idealic state. My last 2 years of my Army career were spent here as an instructor. The next 33 years have been spent here still staring at the Rockies in total awe and wonder. The same feeling when looking at wood.
Kent, what causes the whitish areas or streaks on primarily on the inside of the bowl usually 180 degrees apart while sanding? Assuming that I'm tearing grain particularly with darker woods like walnut. How do you prevent this or remove it when it happens? thanks

It is a variable speed controlled by the trigger. Funny, I haven't really paid much attention to the speed. Probably about midway to full-speed most the time. Happy Turning!

Does it matter what part of the bowl you sand from when the lathe is on? Lower right on inside? What area on the outside?
Not so much. Just be sure to use the edge of the sanding pad. There is a location where it natural works. The sanding pad can kick out of some locations. Experiment. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Do you clean the sawdust off your bowls prior to applying finish? And if so what’s your process?

Yes, it's nice but soft. Use a sharp tool and make light cuts to prevent end grain tear out. Happy Turning!

what lathe speed do your run at while sanding? Also do you run the sanding drill clockwise and the lathe counterclockwise?
Slower than turning, roughly half speed. No, I just do clockwise. If you are doing a show piece, perhaps sanding in reverse would be nice, but I haven't found that much difference. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

Hey Kent. After I finished the inside of my bowl is decently smooth, but after I sand with the power sander I have ridges throughout of the in inside of my bowl... Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Good question. If you have ridges, like tool marks, level them off immediately with 60 or 80 grit paper. Then smooth the surface with each grit further. Don't leave ridges or high spots because they won't disappear. And use the edge of the disk to sand in-line with the wood grain. All the best to you!
Kent, after applying the Tried and True I noticed a lot of mistakes that did not get sanded out. Is it ok to sand again and then reapply the finish?
Jeff, Yes, you can sand and reapply. That's one of the beauties of using an oil finish. Happy Turning!
Did sand but clogged sandpaper very quickly. Is there a way to remove the Tried and a turn without sanding?

Hi Kent, where do get the foam piece for sanding at? I checked your tools list but I couldn’t find it on there. It looks thicker than the one listed on your website.

I looked at those and actually have them, the one on your video shows a much thicker white foam one. The problem with the ones on the link is that the black foam is to short and doesn’t flex like yours in the video. BTW, I love ALL of your videos!! Not really. There is usually some texture on the surface. However, the better the bowl gouge cut the higher grit you can start with. With good technique, you can start sanding around 180 or 220. Great question, thanks!

Thanks for noticing. That screen stops shaving and dust from flying everywhere. It's just window screen suspended with bungie cords. ;)

I understand. Just be sure there are no "pinch points" and it's usually ok.
