    I've watched a LOT of spindle and bowl turning videos over the last month. Your explanations have made it "click" for me. Stopping the lathe and the close up shots while you explain are extremely helpful for me. Thank you!

    Hello, I have a few questions as a soon to be beginner bowl turner. How do you decide what size bowl gouge to get as a beginner? These things are not a cheap investments--1/4, 3/8, 1/2? Also the different grinds, traditional 45 degree and the Elsworth fingernail- why would you want one over the other? I want to do small bowls and some end grain hollowing ( lidded box's) to start out with. Maybe you have this in you other video? Thanks for video and good explanations.
    That looks like a piece of Cedar you are demonstrating on?

      Greg,
      Good questions. I'd recommend starting with a 1/2" and then add a 5/8" if you can. See all my Bowl Gouge videos in the Bowl Gouge playlist here. There is a ton of info contained within. Also check out my course. www.TurnAWoodBowl.com/courses

    I'm new to turning. I have a lathe and chisels handed down from a family member. I think I have a bowl gouge, but my gougelooks different from the one demonstrated in the video. I took an introduction to turning class that emphasized spindle turning. I found this video to be incredibly helpful. The principles of body control and muscle memory gained through patient practice resonate completely with what I learned from the class. I'm looking forward to exploring your other introductory videos. Thanks for sharing your expertise on this channel.

    I have been turning pens and a couple other small items , I’ve wanted to take a class on turning but it never seams to fall on my schedule. A couple months ago I met a fellow that is one of the instructors at our area wood store and he has been going over some of the basics , I watch him turn a bowl and of course it looks super simple.
    You can guess the rest of that story
    I knew you had to hold the gouge a certain way but I did not understand what it was 100% until I watched this video I’m super excited to go put this new found knowledge into practice. I’ve really become fond of watching your videos your not in a hurry to get through the process as fast as possible and I’ve noticed you repeat key points

    How do I know the angle that I should rotate the flute too? In most of the videos I’ve seen, people are constantly changing the rotation of the tool. It would be incredibly helpful if you could make a video about this. Like what you did in 5:56, but just in more detail. Thanks!

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In general, especially when starting out, point the flute in the direction of the cut and rotate it to 3 o'clock for a left to right pass, or 9 o'clock for a left to right pass. You don't want to be able to see down into the flute. If you use this principle to start, the gouge will make light, clean, and relatively safe cuts. Happy Turning!

    Thank you for this video. I've turned a few bowls. I spent this past weekend making 2 bowls. 1 before I watched your gouge videos and 1 after. The 1st one I had catches & grain tearout, like my few previous bowls. The second bowl, after watching your videos, went much smoother. I made the bowl look how I wanted it to, rather than just going thinner until I got all of the gouges from catches out.

    I'm very new to this, just got my first lathe and have used it only 5-6 times. I started with carbides because I heard they require less learning curve and don't need to be sharpened. I just got a little set of HSS tools to try out and see if it's worth buying a sharpening system. Turns out, even new tools have to be sharpened? Is this true? Can I get away with using a bowl gouge right out of the box?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  วันที่ผ่านมา

      Jamie, great question. Traditional gouges do require sharpening and this does discourage many. However, bowl gouges "slice" end-grain fibers, while scrapers tear end-grain fibers. Once you get started with gouges you will see the extra effort of sharpening is a small trade-off for the quality finish they produce. I’m 70 years old, a former marine engineering fitter. I was introduced to wood turning at school at about twelve years old. Never did turning again till my 50 s when I needed to turn a bobbin to fit into a flexible flue liner I had to fit. Bought the cheapest lathe with the cheapest tools and without tuition made the bobbin. Live in the middle of nowhere ( by north east Englands standards), far from tuition and wasn’t using internet at the time. Went on to dabble with turning occasionally with some pleasant results. Eventually, 3 years ago got a small but well made lathe and a set of much better tools. Managed some really nice pieces but only with great difficulty and a lot of time. Seldom produced long shavings. Frequently had snatches, and many frustrations. Access to lots of sycamore and yew encouraged me to persevere. I made little progress. Even buying a high quality, cryogenic gouge made only a little difference.
    This video has dealt with all the fundamentals of using a bowl gouge. Plain speech, clear pronunciation, no one trying to be a comedian, no irritating background music, no superfluous nonsense full of Americanisms. just plain, simple, straightforward speech and detail with common sense as well as a high quality video. I’ve watched numerous others but none deal with the elementary essentials like this video. It really is one of the very best wood turning videos I’ve ever watched . You not only possess the skills and experience but you also have first class communication skills. If it wasn’t 02.08 hours here. I’d go into my garage and practice what I’ve just watched. With most other videos I want to stop them and ask questions. With this one I just want to get in with it. There are two elements to learning: a learner must UNDERSTAND and REMEMBER. One without the other is useless. It’s is the skill of a communicator to impart knowledge in that way . You just did it for me. Thank you so much. The outstanding English, woodworking teacher Paul Sellers is surely one of the world’s finest teachers and a gentleman. His numerous videos are remarkable. I think I’ve just discovered the wood turning equivalent. Thank you so much

      Andy, thank you so kindly for taking the time to share your thoughts. I'm honored to have been able to communicate these rather mundane, yet important lessons in a way that connects with you. I hope you find peace and happy long shavings in your near future. You have YEW, you must keep turning. I've seen yew turnings and they are lovely. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    I've been turning for about 3 months, and fully understand what NOT to do as I found i'm doing everything incorrectly or should I say uninformed. I now understand how to AVOID the ring marks, chatter and basic understanding of the angles involved Thanks for the lesson and can't wait to turn my next bowl!!

    Hi Kent,
    I have been watching your TH-cam’s from my hospital bed for over a month! My name is Gayle & I’m from Queensland Australia.
    A couple of months ago I made my first bowel that ‘turned’ out pretty well though i’m under no allusion that I know what I’m doing!
    Santa has bought me a wood lathe & some chisel’s, thus the binge watching.

    This is my first time seeing how to properly use a bowl gouge,i turned a lot of things bowl's, platter's vases ect but with a carbide scrapper which did a great job. But this idea is far superior to that one and I just bought a larger lathe. The first one would turn 12 inch bowl's but you can never get the maximum and this one is got a overall circumference of 14 inches so I should be able to turn some nice piece's with it. Thanks for sharing 😊

    Hi, Kent, really appreciate your videos which are helping enormously to understand and get better with the bowl gouge to name just one. As a newbie I've a long way to go but am loving it and know with your help I'll get better. Could you tell me, please, what causes "chatter" when using the gouge? Does my gouge need sharpening or is it my technique which is at fault? Thanks again and keep them coming.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      William, Thank you for writing and sharing! Chatter can be from a number of things. If you are roughing a blank, voids will cause chatter. Rubbing or pushing the bevel into the wood will make chatter. Try lifting the bevel/heal of the gouge just a hair as you cut. That might solve the issue. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    I am quite new at bowl turning and I try to apply that technique (riding the bevel, double angle) as best as I can. Yet, I recently experienced many catches as I worked in the interior of a quite old, quite dry, spalted piece of wood. What is it that I do not understand? Is it possible it was to dry, to hard to be workable? Even with the sharpest gouge I could manage to get, I had catchs, little nubs of wood were flying out rather than chips and the surface was not getting smooth. As I was getting something acceptable, a little crater was forming again. Even scraping did not give any nice result. I was turning around 1000 RPM and lower. I had to rely on sanding paper to make something acceptable of that medium size bowl, and I abandonned the idea of making the wall thin. By the way, your videos and written documents are just great.

    Wood shop Teacher question here: trying to get lathe work going, but on every video i watch, they are no guards. How can students lathe out the inside properly if they can't move past the guarding?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hm? Sounds like a question for the insurance company. Guards are going to be in the way of almost all bowl turnings. Staying out of the line of fire is the best method. Honestly, those guard cages will probably ricochet the piece out in any random direction. Left as is, the piece usually comes off in line with the rotation plane. Stay out of the line of fire, keep the rpm under 1,000 for all bowls and the piece will pop off to the floor in the front or back. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    I have tried using the traditional bowl gouge many times over but just couldn’t catch on. I went out and bought the Wolverine sharpening jig and that didn’t make much of a difference. I got so frustrated I turned to using carbide tip tools and I am able to turn out some very beautiful work that I’m very proud of. I had basically given up on the bowl gouge until I seen this video. The way you explained it ,,, it’s like my brain exploded . Yes with your excellent presentation of the gouge to the wood it was like you turned on the light switch for me. I have been using the bowl gouge and have not had a problem on the outside part of the bowl riding the bevel. It is when clearing the interior that I have my catches. When I get 2-3” into the hollowing process that the catches happen even when trying to ride the bevel. Do you have any videos on this part of the hollowing process?

    Do you know what they say .... a little bit of knowledge is dangerous. I am trying back into turning after a long lay off. I know in my head what I want to do but nothing is working right.I can't get that feel back. I guess I am starting all over again. Your videos are helping with things I have forgotten. I like your tip draw a line down the gouge and you should not see it when turning. Thanks.

      Yes, take your time. There are tons on muscle memories that you probably need to revive. You can do it! Take small steps and it’ll come back to you. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    Hi Kent, I have recently discovered your videos, haven't used the bowl gouge yet but this video is a great illustration of the dynamics of the bowl gouge. I am going to attempt to work on a platter made of scraps to see how I do.
