I love how you almost had to beg the spider to bite you. You pressed down on her that first time and she was basically like "Ooooo a back massage? Thanks! Haven't had one in ages."
Hahaha yep they really don’t care. It’s like I said you almost have to be TRYING to get a wolf spider to bite, and even then probably gonna have similar results to me
My school was having a field day at a pumkin farm. So basicly all the classes were in this field in front of the farm and then there was this big wolf spider scuttling around. One of my classmates then tried to step on it. They didn’t kill it but it raised it front legs and showed us it’s orange fangs. It was cool to see but I felt sorry for the spider. Later I heard that it died anyway becuase they stepped on it again and I felt bad for the spider :(
@@green29373 killing spiders brings bad luck. I would know, I used to killed dozens every day working under boat docks... Now my life is really REALLY unlucky
When I was in high school, I had a “pet” wolf spider (more like I had a bond with it because I fed it). It grew to be really large, barely fitting in my palm. I had to relocate it because my best friend had arachnophobia. It never bit me and I would often play with it and handle it with absolutely no fear. I actually still really miss it and wonder if the wolf spiders I see now are maybe it’s descendants as I inherited the same property I grew up on.
I bet you they are! You probably see the distant descendants of that spider you took care of, and maybe in their spider culture they revere you as the Great Giant Who Cares and have holidays and everything in your honor. There’s probably even spider atheists who claim you don’t exist.
Pretty much 😂 poor little thing. Glad the little guy got back in its little burrow though! Probably has tons of alien abduction stories for its friends now
@@MyWildBackyard The Spider: Oh no I think I just approved the biggest myth in the world by finding a weird looking freak The Casual Human: ........ Did this guy call me a freak 😂😂
Yep she was sorry cause she thought we were buds and hanging out. I kept her for observation after to make sure she wasn’t hurt by the stress, also fed her a skipper and she happily devoured it. That release shot during my conclusion bit was the next day and she was happy to go back to her burrow!
@@-G0G0-with most adult spiders, you can look at the little arms positioned in the front of the spider to tell the gender. These arms are called the pedipalps and male spiders have a sexual organ on the ends of them that kind of makes it look like a boxing glove or a bulb. Also, you can look on the underside of the body and find a female’s reproductive organs too. It’s hard to tell the gender at first glance, but once you contain the spider and can get a close look, these details become noticeable.
Never knew these spiders to be aggressive. Just extremely intimidating due to their size. Every one that I've ran into ran away quickly the moment I noticed it. They are gentle giants!
Don't know why, but every summer we have a wolf spider living on our front porch. We don't get rid of it because it's not bothering us. It comes out at night, probably for food, and unless I go looking for it, that's the only time I see it. Last week I read an article about how NOT dangerous they are, as well as how beneficial they actually are. After reading it, I felt a lot better about it being around😁. Last year we had a hay bale on the porch, and that wolf spider had a tunnel that went from the top of the bale to about halfway down the back. It lived there from July until mid November.
my dad had a great experience regarding the psychology of a wolf spider. so my dad was in the woods and he saw a huge wolf spider, so he tried to get it to climb on a stick, the spider doesn't want to go on the stick so it goes to walk around the stick, by dad tries again, he puts the stick in front of it and again it went around, the 3rd and final time my dad put the stick in front of it, the spider was like "leave me alone" and ran up the stick, bit him on the finger and went on its way.
The wolf spider has always been one of my favorites. Been catching them since I was around 8 years old and never got bit by one. Just seeing how much trouble you went through to get bit is kind of a testament about just how "savage" this lovable 8 legged freak is =)
@D lol Well doesn't everything want to kill you in Australia??? I am slightly jealous though =) Outback wildlife = best wildlife. The one country I would love to visit just for all the cool stuff minus the box jellyfish. Screw those guys.
@D Isn't that where that nasty Wandering Spider is from? The one with the 'pissed off and mad about it' attitude? No way would I want to run into one of them, mate.
The spider is like, "I've already gazed into your soul, and I know your true intentions. I am annoyed you have inconvenienced me, so I will not indulge your petty curiosity, good day"
😂 I’m glad the little guy was so cooperative! Almost too cooperative! Either way we got our results for science and the spider was safely released, so I’d call it a rousing success!!
I love that you show how reluctant they are to bite. You really had to bother her to get her to bite you. It helps combat unnecessary fear about them. I've always loved all matter of creepy crawly things.
What a beautiful spider. She's so placid, she doesn't want to bite you. Videos like this help inform people that spiders dont run and jump and want to attack you, they are peaceful creatures ( for the most part ) and just want to be left alone..
I found it terribly endearing that when that spider did not bite you even when you pinned it down with the forceps. You pressed it so hard that its legs splayed in the air and fangs were resting on your skin and it still did not bite. That is a really understanding creature.
I admire your work man. My 4 year old daughter loves bug hunting with me, and we actually keep isopods and jumping spiders as pets. She likes watching your videos with me as well. Keep it up man, your work is appreciated!
Thanks so much! And hello to Young Mank’s daughter! Ask her what videos she’d like to see for me! I’ll be sure to whip some cool adventures up for you guys
I was in my 20's when I lost my fear of spiders. Where I live in Colorado, the wolf spiders we have are the biggest species you'll see, or at least that I've seen. One summer night, I and a group of friends were sitting on a private, secluded sandy/rocky bank of the Colorado River. That night was a full moon. Like many full moons in the summer time during that time of my life I was with a small group of close friends experiencing large quantities of special fungus. On one such occasion I was sitting by myself in the bright moonlight on the edge of a boulder pile. In front of me was such fine sand, a million glorious little sparkles twinkling in the moon light. As I sat there a wolf spider the size of my hand skitters through the sand. On her back was likely 100 little babies, clinging on, their little eyes also twinkling in the moonlight. This was the biggest spider I had ever seen and in that moment, it was one of the most absolutely beautiful things I had ever seen. She stayed around in that area hunting for some time. Me just sitting there as still as a stone, studying her every move. After that night I was never afraid of spiders and took it upon myself to learn as much as I could about them in general, but especially the ones in my habitat. I have so much respect for these little cogs in that which is nature. They have an immensely huge part to play in our world and are much misunderstood.
Love this story. I’m gonna pin this comment I think. Sounds to me like a Geolycosa species, those get HUGE. And that’s what I love about studying invertebrates, they’re all just cogs in this secret world that exists alongside “ours”. It’s actually the concept of one of the series I’m doing here, where I try to capture more of the little hidden lives of these animals on camera! Thanks so much for watching, and thanks for sharing this incredible encounter!
That is so cool Cory. To be honest I still have trouble with fearing spiders. Well, I mean big spiders like Wolf and Funnel Web spiders. I have seen those sparkles of spider eyes with a head mounted flashlight at night and yeah female spiders carrying a mass of little spiderlings looks amazing, like sparkling jewels. Jumping spiders don't seem to worry me that much I guess because they look and behave a bit differently as though they're more intelligent. But anyway, your story reminds and inspires people like me to see the beauty in these creatures.
That's a really beautiful story :) I started appreciating the beauty and intelligence of spiders after I got a better camera to see them up close. Watching videos of jumping spiders and wolf spiders made me realize they're not scary.....they're fascinating and often times beautiful sometimes even cute and some display cat-like behavior the way they groom themselves and hunt. Wolf spiders are even known to make an audible "purring" sound as their mating call. 😸 like tiny eight legged cats.....
I'm a Colorado native also. I can testify that what you say is true, that the wolf spiders in Colorado are the biggest anyone will see. I loved watching the momma's carry their babies around. It really is amazing seeing how many babies she cares for!
Just showed this video to my sons (6, 4, 2) we decided to release the wolf spider we found in our bathtub back into the wild! Thanks for making interesting and family friendly content 🙌
I love my "wolfies"...and around Wake Forest they are everywhere! Yesterday, I was out trimming overgrown azaleas...they were easily 8 feet tall, so I had to get into the thick of them to clip them down. Well, after awhile it felt like something may have been on my head in my hair. It was like a little tickle and then it would stop. I tried ignoring it as nothing After about 10 minutes I again thought something could be on my head. I thought it was probably one of those ugly azalea caterpillers! So, I took my gloves off and started brushing off the hair at the top of my head. I must say that I was very surprised when off fell a huge wolf spider! I wasn't creeped out at all. I actually laughed as I had not expected that. He was okay and crawled under my shed.
As usual, your backyard experiments are second to none. Really nice plot progression, I was hooked through the whole video and I loved how much information you snuck in. Also, I think you gave the single best justification for taking an intentional bite or sting that I’ve ever heard. We consistently advocate that these animals are not harmful, we should have the experience to back that up sometimes. Nice work man! - Harrison and Evan
As I was working on this video, I kinda challenged myself to make a bite video that (theoretically) Andrew Hoffman could watch and be like “you know I agree with this video 100%”. That plus fitting it into my ongoing investigation of the secret world all around us made it flow nicely together, and honestly I’m super pleased with how it turned out! Glad it passed your approval, and glad you enjoyed!
Not sure why you only have 70K subscribers. These videos are changing my whole perspective of spiders. I’m frightened by all spiders but knowing that most spiders are not aggressive, these videos are so great to watch. You have a new subscriber here my friend!
Spencer, your videos have really changed the way I interact with spiders. I'm 73 and used to kill them all. Now it is a live and let live attitude, unless they are in the house. Great job you are doing, thank you.
I’ve been bitten by a red crab spider and felt very similar to what you described. I was grabbing sheets off the line and in one of those sheets was a large red crab spider.. that hurt like shit but went away after a few hours. The first few seconds felt like fire in a needle, then radiating pain for 20 min Then itchiness and swelling for several hours. I don’t blame the spider for defending itself.
That's interesting and also lines up with my experiences. The largest of my hermit crabs are by far the most docile. It seems the largest and most scary can mean they are more chill. I am honestly very impressed with how difficult it was to get a bite. It also helps with the fear of these animals to see not only that they are peaceful but that they really aren't a threat to us even if they weren't. As long as you are honest and don't play up the bite for views like some I have seen or downplay it to seem tough. I was scared as a kid to catch crawdads until I actually got a pinch on purpose and realized that it hurts less than a pinch from a person. This makes it much less nerve wracking to handle them to move them out of my home since even if it does bite (which is very unlikely) it really isn't something to be overly afraid of so thank you.
Glad I could help! I definitely reacted a bit to that bite, but the quick sharp pain was quite the surprise! Died down right away but it was certainly an experience!
Crawdads are awesome. We call them crayfish out here. I agree that the pinch doesn't hurt but that's all from crayfish/crawdads that are less than 4 inches in length. There can be some real behemoths that live at the bottom of lakes, that go to 8+ inches. I think their pinches would be a different story.
Thanks for the vid man! I used to be tormented by my older brothers when we were kids and a legit arachnophobe because of that for most of my life. But because of vids like this also jack, and breeders like daves lil beasties, I can definitely say that not only am I not an arachnophobe, but actually LOVE spiders (in my late 30s). Hoping to do more with them in the future, such as observing them in their natural habitat.
Yessss! I love watching spiders interact with their environments, as well as other creatures! It inspired my Secret Worlds series, where I’m hoping to capture more of the hidden lives of little critters we have all around us! Probably gonna get into vicarious building again at some point, but I need space and time first!
"Do not replicate" NO WORRIES HERE LOL I've had wolf spiders around all my life and I've never been bitten. It's pretty cool you didn't jerk much when Wolfie bit, that's impressive
I’m honestly surprised I didn’t jerk either! The disclaimer is more so kids who watch this don’t end up trying this, especially cause I KNOW some kid is gonna mistake something dangerous for a wolf spider and try this, land in the hospital and get me sued 😂
Speaking from experience, and being from NC myself, I’ve been bitten by a few over the years. And like you said, I was only bitten due to accidentally applying pressure to them without knowing they were there. They’re very painful…but the pain will subside rather quickly. Very docile spiders, but wrongfully labeled aggressive. 😁
Yep like a really hot shot, then a little itch, then nothing. I was really impressed and also underwhelmed at the same time (impressed with initial pain, underwhelmed with after effects). So so glad I was able to demonstrate this, and show just how chill these spiders actually are!
Aw man I almost felt bad for her, it was clear the spider had no interest in biting at all 😂 though it goes to show that spiders don’t go out of their way to bite people and aren’t trying to be scary/aggressive
That girl totally looks gravid, I've currently got a huge female I'm keeping because she just laid an egg sac!!! I plan to release her once her babies have hatched and are ready to hop off her back to go on their own. She's an amazing momma, I see her gently rotating her egg sac all the time 🥺
Well Mr. Man, that was impressive!! Doing this is a hard NOPE from me but glad to know the results! WOW 😳 that close-up shot of the bite was super cool! This is one of those types that give me the eebie jeebies!
It was certainly an experience! I was super nervous to try it but people have been requesting and suggesting it for so long I had to bite the bullet! Glad I did, I certainly learned new things myself while getting this video together!
I’ve come across some really big wolf spiders. I used to enjoy camping events. One time I was using the campsite bathroom. As I was sitting, facing the door, saw a rather large one above the door facing down. First thing I thought was “damn, I just walked under that scary looking spider”. Then I thought “Oh no, I have to walk under that scary looking spider to get out” I’ve watched a couple of you videos and this is the one I really wanted to see. Thank you. I can look at a wolf spider with more wonder and less fear now.
Thanks a ton! Glad you enjoyed, I haven’t known Jack long but he’s a great dude. I love how TH-cam brought a lot of us little wildlife creators together, all of these guys (Harrison and Evan from The Wildlife Brothers, Zac from Life’s Wild Adventures, Emilio from Animal Encounters and Ben from The Wild Report) are super great scientists and filmmakers in their own rite, and I’m honored to have been featured by Jack. Here’s looking forward to working with him in the field this fall 👀
@@MyWildBackyard I can’t wait! The TH-cam community for channels like yours isn’t massive but it sure deserves to be. I’ve been terrified of insects and arachnids my whole life but learning about and seeing people go out of their way to demonstrate worst case scenarios is just a great idea and I love it! I really hope this community keeps getting bigger and better because I feel like so many of the creators here deserve it ❤️
This was so crazy I never knew how much pressure it would take to make one bite now I have a hard time believing the storys I heard of wolf spider bites. Great video
Same honestly. I knew they were flighty but reluctant to bite, didn’t realize they were THIS reluctant to bite! I think people just tell stories about em cause they’re creepy looking and it makes them look tough or something 😂
Spider bite stories are mostly horse shit. The story I always hear is, "Spiders are biting me at night." Interestingly, they have their own dispositions. Some Wolf spiders are immediately defensive, but most are super chill.
Yeah I felt bad for stressing the little critter out! Felt good to see her disappear back down her burrow, if wolf spiders could talk I bet she’s telling her friends about how a giant alien abducted her with a bright light and made her bite him 😂
I love wolf spiders. The pool at my parents house always has wolf spiders that accidentally fall in and I loved going out there throughout the day to see if there were any to rescue. Out of the 100+ that I retrieved from that pool I’ve only been bitten by one a single time. It was one of the largest ones I rescued and I was so excited that I probably rushed it more than usual. It gave me a nice little bite on the inside of my ring finger that felt more like a “Hey you’re bothering me and I feel threatened” kind of warning. It was equivalent to a bee sting in terms of pain from the actual bite, like a sharp pinch. But I didn’t experience anything after that. Wolf spiders are awesome. All spiders are awesome!
They sure are awesome! Your bite experience sounds similar to an incident I had while filming in Texas. A wolfie caught a moth out of midair while I was handling it, but then during filming the moth got dropped. Spider then nipped me on the thumb, but I think it was looking for its food and was blinded by our camera lights. Felt like a mild sting and then had no after effects. Even the big intentional bite had no effects!
@@MyWildBackyard Texas is where my parents wolf spider pool is! I’ve always tried to get people to not fear spiders so much and at the very least appreciate them for how amazing they are and what they do. My five year old daughter has grown to love them and I’m always showing her spiders when I find them (she’s now doing the same). We’ve watched a few of your videos over the last day and I really appreciate how you handle yourself, the spiders and how you are also just trying to educate and share your love of so many things. It’s good to see someone doing what you’re doing and not completely go crazy and exaggerate things for the sake of views or attention. When I tell my daughter about that time I got bit it used to scare her. But showing her this video, and some of your others, how reluctant so many are to actually bite has really helped her understand how important is to be educated and understand something before being scared. As a parent and a former teacher I really appreciate you for that. Thanks for doing what you do - and doing an awesome job at it.
When you first showed the spider at night, I thought, awww! cute little thing. Next day actually on your hand 😳 YIKES! HUGE! Thank you for educating us on how non agressive and beneficial spiders are to us. Great video! Your purseweb spider video still gives me the creapy-crawlies. Any chance we might see you take a bite from that one?
Absolutely! I’ve only ever seen 2 in my life, but this one has sorta gotten my morbid curiosity going for a lot more arachnids! My channel is about investigating secrets of the natural world, and technically venom and reactions to venom can be under that umbrella….. if I get one you’ll be the first to know!
I have an absolute paralyzing fear of spiders. like actual arachophobia. Not the average "oh i hate spiders they're so creepy" more like the i'll throw myself through a plate glass window to get away if i'm trapped. Wolf Spiders are possibly the very tip top of my fear, ever since I was like 16, and I was showering and as I was lathering up I looked over, and saw this giant monster wolf 5 inches from my face, and blocking me in the shower. I LOST IT. I watch videos like this to help desensitize myself as I know that exposure therapy is how they treat arachnophobia, so I guess in a way i'm self treating.
If you're able to, you should go to a reptile expo and check out some jumping spiders and tarantulas once you feel ready. Watching them is one thing, but seeing them act so docile in person is a great next step to becoming more comfortable with them. Plus, jumping spiders in particular are really cute and fantastic little pets.
Same. This videos really help. I can’t believe it stayed on his arm and didn’t try running in his mouth. My imagination goes nuts. But, this video actually really helps.
That is one beautiful and cute wolf spider you caught lol, they are as amazing as jumping spiders and ogre faced spiders. That is the most docile wolf spider I've ever seen, just goes to show that it takes a lot to get a spider to bite you because of how reluctant they are to bite and I definitely respect them as much as lizards and frogs considering all three have the same job of feeding on pests.
Yep! I know these videos get the views and everyone jumps to conclusions but honestly I loved how reluctant she was to bite, especially cause I got to SHOW that they aren’t monsters! Hopefully I’ll be able to get into spider keeping soon, gotta afford to move out first! Would love to have an “AntsCanada”-esque series documenting spider and mantis keeping!
@@MyWildBackyard That would be an amazing series especially since my fascination with spiders and mantises started to grow into a love and appreciation for them. Right now I keep a Rabid Wolf Spider I had caught from outside, I hope that it's not a bad thing that I got it from outside. Btw I'm glad you make these videos to show that they are not monsters or something to be feared.
I love wolf spiders. They are super chill, not dangerous to people, and will keep your place clean of bugs and other spiders. It's why I always try to keep one or two in the house. I live in an area where brown recluse can be a problem and I've never had an issue with them because wolf spiders are awesome.
Not only was this a good display of temperament, but also how much intent and control these little guys have. You can see it chose to stick you with only one fang. Side observation, I think it didn't sting you because it liked the attention or because it was scared of how you would retaliate.
Ty! This was really informative👍 I used to live in Australia where I had to overcome my fear of spiders bc huntsmen live everywhere ppl do(including in houses/cars). But being back in the states, there’s so much misinformation around, I never know what’s truly dangerous. Thanks so much for making such great vids and teaching ppl actual facts about the wild world around us.
Weird thing is, I think spiders of this size look terrifying from a certain distance, but her face is super cute from up close. She looks so grumpy, even though she's a very kind lady.
The wolf spiders in my area (western Pennsylvania) must just be built different, because they absolutely are aggressive at times here, even often. We've always lived in rural areas and therefore had to contend with them. 1 jumped from a box about a foot or so away and bit my partners leg immediately after landing on it. Our basement is finished and remodeled with older children's bedrooms down there, and they would often come up with painful and weeping bites. However i do mostly agree, they aren't the bad guys, usually we are. Also, you're a mad lad xD Respect👍
Ohio wolf spiders are crackhead levels of aggressive, more often than not they will sprint at you to scare you off (and as hunting spiders they are quite fast) instead of hiding.
Yeah, I live in Pittsburgh - in suburbs about twenty minutes from the city - and they are not as common, but I’ve seen them in my house before, and they are not very calm. Their size and speed is a bit unnerving, and I would rather just not have to deal with them at all. Funny story: my brother tried to remove a wolf spider by stepping on it (I was not present to advise him against it). It happened to be one carrying tens of offspring, and so while the main pest was eliminated, a bunch of tiny wolf spiders came scurrying from the corpse. From there on out, we have concluded the best pest control method for both parties is the capture and release.
MoneyGrab, that last paragraph is nightmare fuel and going to haunt me indefinitely. I think its fair that most in this region (Ohio included) would agree that wolf spiders here are aggressive. They have also walked across beds with someone lounging on it and bite on their way past-They have literally chased us down the hallway or across the room, and flung themselves from the wall to you for attack. None of this is unusual behavior, so this original vid was fascinating and surprising, because it's probably the first time I've seen wolf spider behavior so chill
@@boneless8473 I was running the vacuum in a pediatric OPT room, and every time I got close to this big toy chest/bench, this crazy wolf spider would dart out from under it straight at the vacuum. I ended up having to use a big clear storage tote to catch and release her because she was fast af, and absolutely had that crack head aggression. Central Ohio 🤷🏻♀️
I only just found your channel tonight, and I gotta say. I love your content!!! But as I watch, i can't help but yelp out "Be careful of her, dont scare her too much!' I can't help it, I know you're being extremely gentle, and I'm being a mooch. Just having a beardie dragon has opened my eyes to a lot of creatures I wasn't fond of, and due to feeding him. I have to handle bugs, and I have a newfound interest in them❤😁
That’s amazing to hear! It’s a really hard balance when doing bite experiments to make sure that the animals aren’t being made out to be scary or villains. Spiders want less to do with us than we do with them!
I have spider phobia and it is really bad, but I started to watch videos which spiders are not aggressive and it really helps with my self talk when needed 😄 thanks for going through this with the spideys 😊
I was bit by one when I was pretty young. I was basically doing what you were doing, without the purposeful trying to get bitten part. I was just picking it up to look at it(dumb kid). It basically felt like getting a shot at the doctor. It itched like crazy and my mom freaked out about it. Nothing bad ever came from it, and now I just try to move them outside with a piece of paper.
Yep like a hot shot! I was honestly expecting symptoms to last longer, like a welt the next day or something, but gotta say they’re big freaky spiders but they’re more bark than bite!
That was a baby! lol I came home one day and there was a wolf spider a full 4" across and it looked even bigger than that. It was HUGE. It had massive fangs and it really freaked me out. I would love to see you find one that big and let it bite you!
People get confused about wolf spiders and brown recluse spiders because they look almost the same, the wolf spider won’t bite unless it feels pain and the brown recluse spider will always bite
This is the one spider I’ll always fear bc of how scary it’s face is. It’s cold black eyes with huge furry fangs and furry body. I’ve been scared of them since I was in elementary due to a spider book that had its face in one of the pages, and basically jump scared me. This video kind of helped, but I still feel cold when I see them
Aww. That spider is a sweety. I have a story about them. We used to catch them as kids, and they were our pets. We lived in the mountains and fell asleep with ours in the back of the car and the container got opened. They were everywhere, not a single bite. They are amazing beautiful creatures. Scary for alot of people, you shouldn't be scared. You get bit you probably deserved it, oh well. They are sweethearts! Just alien to us because we dont understand them. Love and be loved, that's the lesson.
Now try a brown recluse.. Lol jk! I have an infestation of them in my barn, hundreds of them. People say they don't get larger than a quarter but I have definitely seen larger. It's the one species of spider I really don't like. 1. Because of the potential effects of it's venom. 2. Because they are super invasive and will reproduce super fast inside your house. Two spiders quickly become hundreds and even thousands. Most spider species do not want to be inside a house (with the exception of some orb weavers). Brown recluse's don't want to be outside a house
Yep their habitat is mostly human dwellings now! I’m actually considering tests with recluse and widow spiders. Widow spiders I have access to, recluses I don’t. And also I’m a bit more wary of the scars recluses will cause than the illness I’ll get for a few days from the widow. We shall see.
Currently dealing with a recluse bite as we speak... You can literally see the fang marks. The first 24 hours were pure hell for me. Got bit 4 days ago... the initial bite isn’t the problem, it’s the after effects
Its crazy but I swear to god these videos are doing more to cure my arachnophobia more than making it work. In fact, since I started watching these I no longer get stressed when I find a spider crawling on me. I know now that if I just stay calm and let them move on to another surface nothing bad will happen. And I swear to god some of them are starting to even look kind of cute. lol
I’m glad to hear it! That was kinda the reason I made this one too- wolfies are sweethearts once you get used to them. I always start people off with jumping spiders, but the sooner you get them used to the bigger, scarier ones, the sooner the arachnophobia melts away.
Just found you... watching gives me the willies! I have a pretty good feeling of arachnophobia. Watching how harmless these wolfies can be, I'm quite ashamed of killing them in the past. I have several large ones around my house that I shall let live in peace and be grateful for the job they do for me.
I think the fact that he works with spiders a lot and isn’t afraid of them is probably why it didn’t bite the first time, cause it was probably like hey this guy is nice
I love spiders. I’ve only really handled domesticated tarantulas and I’m not sure I’d want to intentionally disturb a wild spider doing its own thing but I respect the heck out of them and when I see them in my flat I let them be, I don’t tear down their webs and I let them do their thing. I love watching them and admiring how gorgeous they actually are. My favorite is being by flower beds and watching the jumping spiders, they are just so darn cute. I understand why some people are arachnophobic, if I’m to be honest I was extremely arachnophobic as a child, but exposure therapy really helped and now I’m more fascinated than afraid. Understanding does so much to ease the fear and I love videos like this that show people the true nature of the things they are afraid of but have no real reason to fear.
Ironic that a spider bite video would quell arachnophobia so well. I hate these things but had no idea how docile they actually are. Great spider advocacy!
Thanks so much! It’s funny because being bitten intentionally by spiders has helped with my “fear” (more like mild discomfort) a ton as well. Now spiders are kind of just everyday things 😂
odd thing is, i really become to like all spiders you're showing to us, they somehow look and behave really adorable, and that all on your arm and hand. it's pretty nice to see and than feel that.
It's not the bite, it's the walk 😆 I keep many arthropods with the exception of spiders just because they make me feel sick and sweaty just looking at them or being near them. Seeing them on TH-cam isn't a problem, seeing them on my wall is lol Nice video mate. Keep it up :)
aww shes so pretty, my first spider was this kind. I rescued her.. she was poisoned or something and dangling on my screen door. I left her there and it was october. Well i got out of work and she was still there hanging all wieird so i thought maybe she was dead, but nope. So i took her in and with honey and qtip watered down, she survived. She died a year later, and she gave birth but thats heart breaking story. I miss her, i loved her.
When I was a little kid I remember playing in the garden in my front yard of my childhood home with some action figure toys and I didn't see this hole in the ground. Well when my hand got near it a huge wolf spider (honestly probably double the size of the one in the video) popped out it and me and the wolf spider both immediately froze and stared at each other. Then after what felt like forever but was probably only like 4 seconds, he just went back into is hole. Years later I read up on them and figured out they make burrows and when prey stumble upon them they pop out and grab them. They've always been one of my favorite type of spiders, 2nd only to jumping spiders. I absolutely love jumping spiders.
I'm an filipino, and we have alot of wolf spiders in our living room, bathroom, bedroom, attic, ceiling, basement, garage, and I've been bitten by one 5 or 8 times and it doesn't hurt or injured me, they're completely harmless they only go in our houses for cockroaches, smaller spiders, small lizards and other kinds of pests.
I used to think they are terrifying but after watching Jack's Wild life and You my anxiety has gone down a lot. I actually think they are pretty cute 😍
They are super cute! Though to be honest I was super scared of them for the longest time too. I wanna say jumping spiders first got me curious enough to just watch spiders milling about, doing their own things, then I watched orb weavers spin webs, wolf spiders do mating dances, and over time I was just like whoa. These are cool!
They are great to have around as they kill other spiders we don’t want like widows. They do bring a little wandering spider vibe though, but just looks wise.

That is so cute.

Yep she was sorry cause she thought we were buds and hanging out. I kept her for observation after to make sure she wasn’t hurt by the stress, also fed her a skipper and she happily devoured it. That release shot during my conclusion bit was the next day and she was happy to go back to her burrow!
@@MyWildBackyardHow do you know the gender?
@@-G0G0-with most adult spiders, you can look at the little arms positioned in the front of the spider to tell the gender. These arms are called the pedipalps and male spiders have a sexual organ on the ends of them that kind of makes it look like a boxing glove or a bulb. Also, you can look on the underside of the body and find a female’s reproductive organs too. It’s hard to tell the gender at first glance, but once you contain the spider and can get a close look, these details become noticeable.
@@-G0G0- size alone can tell if you know the difference but the closest “legs” to its face tells. balls on the leg=male.
Never knew these spiders to be aggressive. Just extremely intimidating due to their size. Every one that I've ran into ran away quickly the moment I noticed it. They are gentle giants!
Yep. Glad she finally gave me a bite for the video though! Time to put those fears to rest!
I love wolf spiders man, they are just chill little giys who are more scared of us
-ignoring the fact that your a bajillion times its size-
The way the spider herself looked surprised that she actually bit you lol.
I love how she jumps back like "Oh, did I just do that?! I'm so so sorry!!"
How tf can you tell
The wolf spider has always been one of my favorites. Been catching them since I was around 8 years old and never got bit by one. Just seeing how much trouble you went through to get bit is kind of a testament about just how "savage" this lovable 8 legged freak is =)
Yep real monsters huh 😂 I just like watching em run around. Also- feeding them is INSANE to watch!
@D lol Well doesn't everything want to kill you in Australia??? I am slightly jealous though =) Outback wildlife = best wildlife. The one country I would love to visit just for all the cool stuff minus the box jellyfish. Screw those guys.
@D "Spiders "and "Australia" are a whole dimension of Nope.😄
@D Isn't that where that nasty Wandering Spider is from? The one with the 'pissed off and mad about it' attitude? No way would I want to run into one of them, mate.
Right? They are so cool and so docile.
Big spiders typically don't need to be aggressive. Wolf spiders and garden spiders tend to be super chill.
That’s the goal! They’re not monsters at the end of the day, they really prefer not to interact with us at all

Can we just appreciate the fact that he went through a spider bite for us?!Well done!
I found it terribly endearing that when that spider did not bite you even when you pinned it down with the forceps. You pressed it so hard that its legs splayed in the air and fangs were resting on your skin and it still did not bite. That is a really understanding creature.

That's a really beautiful story :)
I started appreciating the beauty and intelligence of spiders after I got a better camera to see them up close.
It really is amazing seeing how many babies she cares for!
the fungi help previde the beautiful experience 🍄🍄🍄
Just showed this video to my sons (6, 4, 2) we decided to release the wolf spider we found in our bathtub back into the wild! Thanks for making interesting and family friendly content 🙌
Glad to provide! Hello to you and your fam!
Wolf spider was like: “bleh! Human? No way I am biting that.” Lmao
I tried ignoring it as nothing
After about 10 minutes I again thought something could be on my head.

This wasn't an experiment. It was a demonstration. The king of backyard "experiments" is The Backyard Scientist.
Not sure why you only have 70K subscribers. These videos are changing my whole perspective of spiders. I’m frightened by all spiders but knowing that most spiders are not aggressive, these videos are so great to watch. You have a new subscriber here my friend!
Hahha! She's like: I've been trying to avoid hurting you, but, now ya got on my last nerve. Happy now?

Spencer, your videos have really changed the way I interact with spiders. I'm 73 and used to kill them all. Now it is a live and let live attitude, unless they are in the house. Great job you are doing, thank you.
I’m glad to hear it! Thanks for keeping an open mind about these awesome creatures.
I’ve been bitten by a red crab spider and felt very similar to what you described. I was grabbing sheets off the line and in one of those sheets was a large red crab spider.. that hurt like shit but went away after a few hours. The first few seconds felt like fire in a needle, then radiating pain for 20 min
Then itchiness and swelling for several hours.
I don’t blame the spider for defending itself.
Thank you. The fact that you had to try so hard to get her to bite is a testament to how non-aggressive these spiders really are.
@@hamsandwich6685 I've never seen one that big. That's cool.

Spider bite stories are mostly horse shit. The story I always hear is, "Spiders are biting me at night." Interestingly, they have their own dispositions. Some Wolf spiders are immediately defensive, but most are super chill.

We’ve watched a few of your videos over the last day and I really appreciate how you handle yourself, the spiders and how you are also just trying to educate and share your love of so many things.
It’s good to see someone doing what you’re doing and not completely go crazy and exaggerate things for the sake of views or attention.
Yep that's why I leave them alone
Not only was this a good display of temperament, but also how much intent and control these little guys have. You can see it chose to stick you with only one fang. Side observation, I think it didn't sting you because it liked the attention or because it was scared of how you would retaliate.

Thanks so much! I’ll do my best to stay safe 👌 thanks for all your support!
I have to handle bugs, and I have a newfound interest in them❤😁
Glad to have you here! World needs more creature lovers!
this is helping my phobia so much. seeing how much it takes to actually get them to bite
Hey man. VERY impressed by the amount of respect you give those creatures. Great vid and safe adventures my man!
New sub for sure!
What’s going on with your arm in your picture man?
@@sassythesasquatch8036 😂😂😂 I wanna know what you think is going on. I'll tell you how close you are.

@@sassythesasquatch8036 nope. Not even close. Haha.

I was bit by two brown recluse spiders while I was sleeping
Your channel is so great i love that you are filming it with no crew its so awesome!
If you wanna find GIANT Wolf Spiders, just head to an abandoned building at night in Ohio. Some of the biggest spiders I’ve seen In Ohio ever
Aww, Wolf Spiders are cute little creatures! 🥹
Wolf spider's are very beautiful and important creatures, they certainly deserve respect.
It was such a short bite, it almost seemed like it regretted it after. Like "you asked for this but I don't know why" kinda vibe
That is really cool how even after some pinning attempting the bite, she’s still like “nah I’m good, but wtf are you doing”
This video kind of helped, but I still feel cold when I see them
It's not scary looking. It's cute! 🙂
Wolf spiders are cool looking and a lot of the angles you get of them make them look cute
That's because they are cute! 🥺
Bro thinks he’s brave wilderness
Is this supposed to be mean or just random?
The size/proportion of the wolf spiders make them kind of cute. I wouldn't have ever imagined myself thinking that way.
I think they look kinda like lankier jumping spiders. The big eyes do it for me
Dude. You make Coyote look like an absolute joke! This channel rocks, you're a G!
Glad you enjoyed! You’ll get comfortable with spiders eventually, just be patient with yourself
Thanks for not screaming like a maniac lol for a guy who makes a living working outside, I actually believe this bite reaction.
😂 I was a little surprised by the initial jab but then it wasn’t super bad. No theatrics here!
This guy Spencer is like your brother in law made a TH-cam channel yesterday, and using bug out of the backyard 😂
tysm for making these videos. People deserve to understand how misunderstood spiders are especially arachnaphobes.
Spiders that actively hunt like Wolf Spiders and Jumping Spiders are so awesome. They're like curious little 8 legged cats.
They’re insane! I’m actually working on some big documentaries on both these spider groups for later this year!
Casual home spider that happened to walk on me when I was asleep: BITE
Wolf Spider: OK OK CHILL ILL BITE JUST STOP DOING THAT.
Absolutely beautiful specimen of spider. Love the camerawork.
Thank you!
I cackled the first time you pressed down and her legs were going up like woop woop Woop. She liked it. 😂
aww shes so pretty, my first spider was this kind.
Wolf spider: but I don't want to bite
You:come on bite me😂..thanks for all you do👊👍
Looking forward to your next video of the Goliath Bird Eater spider bite..
seeing how reluctant the spider is to bite is kinda making me feel better about running into one of those things
Now this is real content! Great work
I'm an filipino, and we have alot of wolf spiders in our living room, bathroom, bedroom, attic, ceiling, basement, garage, and I've been bitten by one 5 or 8 times and it doesn't hurt or injured me, they're completely harmless they only go in our houses for cockroaches, smaller spiders, small lizards and other kinds of pests.
Yep! Great pest control, not very serious bite. Win-win in my book!
Another cool thing about wolf spiders is the way they carry their young on top of their abdomen. Good parenting! I have seen this many times.
They are great to have around as they kill other spiders we don’t want like widows. They do bring a little wandering spider vibe though, but just looks wise.
Very respectful way you pulled this off :-) Thank you!
