BITTEN by the RED WIDOW! My WORST Mistake?

  • Please don't try this at home.
    While searching for rare praying mantises, I came across one of my favorite spiders in the wild: the red widow. These spiders are incredibly venomous, and unfortunately I found out just how bad the red widow bite actually is. Join me on this very nerve wracking journey!

    Here at MyWildBackyard we investigate the secrets of the natural world- secrets that can be hidden in our very own backyards! I want to share the incredible world of insects, spiders and other wildlife with you and inspire you to explore your curiosity. Get out there, and find your adventure!
    For those who read the description- we've updated the channel! I'm working on adding more features to videos to better expand our conversations about the secrets we find in the natural world! Introducing the Creature Tier System! There are four rankings:
    1. Staple - These are the lowest tier creatures. They are the most common species in a given habitat, and while they're not boring, they're really only exciting when you're exploring a new habitat and you haven't seen them before. Not something to write home about.
    2. Neat - These are a step up from Staple. They don't make your entire day, but they are worth taking a closer look at when found. Definitely can be exciting to have a productive day finding many Neat species.
    3. Wild - These are exciting to find. Whether they have interesting defensive features that offer a nice challenge in the field, are particularly cool looking, or maybe a little bit rare, Wild species aren't necessarily the MOST memorable of encounters, but they definitely make your day when you see them. An adventure featuring many Wild species will truly be memorable.
    4. Gem - These are special. Usually involving extremely interesting biology and significant rarity, Gem species are animals that you really do not see every day. These species can make your whole adventure, and will be very memorable.

    A friend of mine was bitten by a red widow a while back. He had no symptoms for a couple of years but started getting migraines and night sweats that worsened into spinneret glands forming at the wrist. Very small but strong setules formed at the fingertips and he also was somehow more aware of his surroundings. Haven't seen him since I last visited him in NYC. Hope he's doing ok.

      I would have to agree, just a little nip, cuz when I was bit by a black widow she was stuck in my paint suit and had the weight of the clothes to help hold her bite for awhile. the venom hit my heart like a spike, I still have a hole on my knee 4 years later. My knee swelled up to the size of a honey dew melon , red hot and flaming like fire for a week. The first night in bed there was no sleep, just moaning . I was probably the most pain I've ever felt.

    Rewatching the way the spider turned around and approached you it looks exactly like what every L. hesperus I’ve observed does when coming in for a bite. There is a cautious rush about it that is different than their “I’m just wandering” movements. I only ever see that combo immediately before a bite. Seems to be a genus wide warning sign.
    If I were to venture a hypothesis, when you touched her abdomen she felt a threat by a warm body something. And when she turned back and felt the same warm bodied something she believed she found what bumped her. I’m just surprised she didn’t try to throw a few strands of web on your finger first before coming back for the bite.

      Seems to me you've lost your goddamn mind, girl. Spiders ain't people, they're not throwing a bloody tantrum or giving "warning bites". It is following its instinct, no emotions involved. It's just chemistry and wiring, not a damn Disney character. Get a grip and stop humanizing a damn bug. It's ludicrously pathetic.

    I can't help but wonder if this particular widow was that aggressive because of the nest it was first found in. When you first initially found the widow, it was with a clutch of eggs. I wonder if perhaps this spider was feeling defensive, and wanted to make sure the nest was ok? I am so glad to hear that you are okay, I was terrified when I first saw the title. Thank you for documenting this for science as well!

    • @MyWildBackyard
      @MyWildBackyard  ปีที่แล้ว +76

      I think that may have played a role. However- I’ve worked with widows that had eggs before as well, and never saw one show any defensive behavior. My only guess is combination of heat and having eggs meant she was in a BAD mood.

    • @BugsandBiology
      @BugsandBiology ปีที่แล้ว +26

      I’d say individual variation in temperament would be a factor too. For example, I’ve noticed a shocking variety of demeanours among funnel-webs. Some are really chill and I’ve never seen them rear up in a threat display. Some are very aggro, and will go into a threat pose at the slightest disturbance. Most are somewhere in the middle; their first reaction to disturbance will be to either run or freeze, but they may rear up if provoked.

      I’ve kept a lot of widows and even bred them, though my experience is limited to L. hesperus as that’s the local species for me.
      Gravid females are definitely way more defensive. The warmth probably just made her feel good and energetic.
      That said, I don’t want anyone to get me twisted; what Spencer said is still true. Even when my widows got MORE defensive than usual, they were never very defensive.
      This specimen’s behaviour was very much unlike anything I’ve seen from a widow personally.
      L. bishopi seems to be a fair bit different from its cousins. Demands respect for sure.

    I feel like the area of the bite is an important piece of the puzzle in how a bite severity is measured. For example, with it being your finger, I would say that the intensity is less than if you got bit on the neck for example. Hope you're well my dude!

    You got off really, really light my friend! You are incredibly lucky in this respect. You clearly did not get a full venom bite, more of a warning. As you know, Widow spiders can conrol the amount of venom that they can inject. Just a little bite to warn you not to get too comfortable with them. Respect them always. 😊

      Does that mean that the Red Widow bite with venom is exactly like the Australian Widow species? It is kind of scary how even a minor bite from the Red Widow mirrors a mild case of the Australian Widow symptoms...

    Hopefully since it was a knuckle and not likely(?) a full venom ‘dose’ (not sure how rapidly they can inject their venom), as you reacted quickly & the knuckle isn’t an easy area to puncture, future potential effects won’t occur 🙏🏼

    I'm in the outback South Australia and I've been bitten by the redback spider 3 times, twice on the neck with very little pain but lumps like ball bearings under the skin at the bite sites and once between the little toes on my right foot and that one stung like 10 bee stings at once. I didn't get sick or have any other reactions. Skin infections from spider bites occur more so from the bacteria under fingernails from scratching the itch rather than from the venom.

    I'm glad you're OK! I just discovered your channel yesterday and love your passion. I was excited to see your video where you (with the help of two naturalists) found the Red widow for the first time, in the palmettos of Florida. I think our desire to handle these animals, even the deadliest ones, boils down to the fact that we're looking to connect with them and understand them at a deeper level. I completely get that. Stay safe!

      Yup accidents do happen, and I know the risks when I handle. You definitely wouldn’t see me doing this with a rattlesnake! Widows get overhyped in their danger, and while I don’t encourage people to replicate what I do, I stress it so people kill them less. They’re beautiful spiders, and don’t deserve the hate they receive. So glad you’re enjoying, and not to worry, I’m not gonna get put out by a little spider! Plenty more videos to come.

    Thankfully you're okay, I was one of the unfortunate people who was bitten by a black widow in my youth. It tagged me in the middle of the night and was not a pleasant experience, I did not know I had been bitten until hours later as I had sever nausea and cramping and at first I thought it was just the flu but after the symptoms had calmed down there was a very sore spot on my back that had a small bite mark like the one on your finger and after examining my room I found the widow had made her web on the side of my bed. But like you, I still like spiders, in fact I have a pet Tarantula that I raised from a spiderling.

    In 2010 I was bitten by a black widow on my foot. I was in my home, sitting in my chair talking to a friend of mine. That spider climbed onto my foot and bit me with no provocation . Yes, very rare behavior. That bite actually got me to want a spider as a pet. I now have a tarantula collection.

    The good thing about widow bites is that they are rarely ever fatal. Unless your body has a severe allergic reaction to it, you most likely wouldn't even need to go to the hospital. It's just gonna hurt like hell for a while with some pretty rough muscle cramping.

    Crazy that this happened. I wonder if you also got lucky and it didn't give a full dose of venom when it bit or if only one fang broke the skin. Hopefully it's nothing more than a dull ache every few years, even for an hour or so at a time, I think that would still be easy to deal with. Glad to see it didn't break your spirit either with handling and that you kept your cool. Keep up the great work in teaching us about how neat spiders really are (and other weird insects).

    • @BlazinLow305
      @BlazinLow305 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's most likely an old wive's tale. That said, pain is weird. It isn't just a tissue damage alarm. How you think of it, how other people react, what you are told, etc, all influence it. It's not uncommon to have an injury be fully healed up, and you still experience the pain from it. So it wouldn't surprise me if someone experienced something along those lines, and it morphed a bit into "this venom affects you forever"

  • @lftr_react
    @lftr_react ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It almost looked like the widow put a bite into the stick at one point before she nicked ya. Possible the stick got a main dose and you got caught with a lesser shot. Also did you get nailed with both fangs? Wound looks like maybe you got hit with a single.

    I think you got a semi dry warning bite honestly… I live in Utah and have lived in Vegas. I literally live with black widows and have taken bites twice. Last one being just a few years ago. I still have a bruise on my leg from it. And I had headaches and pain for weeks and was on antibiotics for over a month. Like, you’re lucky being that this was a worse specimen! Lol and my first widow bite was the same. Headaches, pain, and vomiting for weeks. I’m happy yours wasn’t worse!

    I’ve been bitten by black widows between 10-15 times, where I live they are as prolific as flies. The first 3-4 times I got bites I felt stomach cramping, itchy soreness at bite location, joint pain on the side I was bitten on, after that I stopped having reactions to the bites, the bite area would be itchy and leave two very obvious scabbed marks but that’s it, crazy how these creatures can effect the human body

    As someone with a pretty solid case of arachnophobia this just makes me admire them even more. They absolutely terrify me but I am also extremely fascinated by them as well. They’re magnificent hunters and having had to deal/tolerate them my entire life living in a rural area, I can definitely say that every single spider is definitely different in temperament. Some species may have certain levels of aggression, but I’ve seen individuals with bad tempers in otherwise more docile species. I’ve had a case of a really large tree spider aggressively attack me simply because it had a bad temper. Usually they only become aggressive when provoked but this one was just really aggressive. As soon as I would put my foot on the floor it would actually charge at me from under my closet door with the front legs up. First time I had ever seen one do that (and that really didn’t help my arachnophobia 😂). So I decided I’d let the thing cool down and waited an hour before trying to leave my bed again, and again as soon as my foot touched the floor it came charging out at me. I didn’t ever get close enough to it to figure out what specie it was, but I am fairly certain it was a tree spider or a very, very small fishing spider. Very glad your bite was minor! Widows can definitely pack a mean punch
