While exploring the wilderness of Florida, I stumbled upon the biggest wolf spider I've ever seen! Lots of you have been asking to see my process of handling spiders safely, so I figured I'd try my hand at making friends with this gentle giant so you can see the whole process from start to finish!
    Subscribe: / mywildbackyard
Here at MyWildBackyard we investigate the secrets of the natural world- secrets that can be hidden in our very own backyards! I want to share the incredible world of insects, spiders and other wildlife with you and inspire you to explore your curiosity. Get out there, and find your adventure!
For those who read the description- we've updated the channel! I'm working on adding more features to videos to better expand our conversations about the secrets we find in the natural world! Introducing the Creature Tier System! There are four rankings:
    1. Staple - These are the lowest tier creatures. They are the most common species in a given habitat, and while they're not boring, they're really only exciting when you're exploring a new habitat and you haven't seen them before. Not something to write home about.
    2. Neat - These are a step up from Staple. They don't make your entire day, but they are worth taking a closer look at when found. Definitely can be exciting to have a productive day finding many Neat species.
    3. Wild - These are exciting to find. Whether they have interesting defensive features that offer a nice challenge in the field, are particularly cool looking, or maybe a little bit rare, Wild species aren't necessarily the MOST memorable of encounters, but they definitely make your day when you see them. An adventure featuring many Wild species will truly be memorable.
    4. Gem - These are special. Usually involving extremely interesting biology and significant rarity, Gem species are animals that you really do not see every day. These species can make your whole adventure, and will be very memorable.

Grew up having to deal with spiders as I lived on a pig farm, although I have arachnophobia for some reason (also extends to scorpions). I live in the UK, so this was manageable. Below a certain size I used to catch and release. Above a certain size, the "I can't do it," kicked in.
If a spider that size was that close to my hand - you would have a forest fire. Biggest I used to be able to cope with was maybe 3 inches leg to leg. This content saves spider lives. I know spiders are good. But my ape brain looks for a rock.

I have a tarantula that lives under my bed, she is a cutie, I pick her up and we watch Hulu together, she likes sleeping on my wrist, during the winter I buy her crickets to substitute the minimal cricket population in my area when it gets a little cold, I fed her a piece of a lays potato chip once, and I found out she really likes the big blue horn worms I feed her when she starts to look a little thin, she is surprisingly smart, when it’s super cold she sleeps under my pillow, I’ve woken up a few times to find her splayed out under my pillow soaking up the warmth from my heating blanket, I love her so much, but I don’t want to catch her because she does a good job of eating all of the crickets, she is like having an 8 legged cat that sometimes inhabits my walls, and yes, she gets pets, I think she likes them because she doesn’t run, she just sits there

Just recently, I caught one climbing on my car, and while it was sitting in my hand, it looked up at me, crouched, and hid its face.
I said hi and told it how adorable it was. I have no clue if it could hear me, but it calmed down, and when I held out a finger, it jumped onto it, no hesitation, and was quickly running back and forth from hand to hand until I eventually put my hand near the dirt and it jumped off.

I remember when I used to be scared of spiders. I never squished them as I respected what they did for us, namely eating far more annoying bugs.
Not to mention, they don't know they're spiders, to them, they're just them.
Anyhow, one day I'd left my house with my wife, gone down stairs, and started walking along the street. In the middle of the street, there was a LARGE black wolf spider. I live in China, in a rather large city, so seeing spiders is quite rare and the worse bugs like mosquitoes are far more common. For that reason, I'd worried that this spider might get stomped for simply looking sinister.
I can't say for certain that it was a wolf spider as it wasn't furry, its legs were more of an obsidian black, shiny, and hard.
I overcame my fear, put one hand in front and the other behind, nudging it softly onto my hand, just as you did here. It's worth noting that this spider wasn't much smaller then the one you held in this video, so it was a lot for me to make myself do this.
Then, it calmly walked onto my hand and allowed me to carry it over to a garden style area with vines and flowers and such. I nudged it off my hand softly and away it went.
After that, I lost all fear of spiders in place of reason, respect, and admiration.
It's safe to say, I rather love spiders now. When calmly interacting with them, it's easy to see how intelligent and observant they are. If you stay calm, they tend to stay calm. :D

They recognize us as something native to their ecosystems as well and a lot of them will utilize that/us in some way or another that's ultimately symbiotic. It's unfortunate so many people don't recognize that and fear them when they really just want to get a free meal out of the insects that could actually do us harm/be a nuisance.

It's best to not think of a spider as an animal. It's more apt to call them Biological Mechs. This is less because of what they are and more of HOW they are. They operate via hydralics. No joke, the way they move is they pump fluid through their body through their circulatory system, so effectively, they're moving via heartbeat. It's really neat. This is also why they curl up when they die, because the loss of pressure causes the limbs to move back to a default state. That being said, the smarter spiders such as the wolf or huntsman spider really blur that line. In essence, the more 'hunty' a spider is, the more intelligent generally they are. Except for tarantulas, which are the eight legged versions of 'no thoughts, head empty.' Literally, they have no long term memory, with the except of old world, which have a special organ scientists haven't identified yet that lets them remember HATE. Seriously, Cobalt Blues are mini satans.

Wolf spiders are the cause of my “phobia” to spiders. I had a ball go under a bush as a kid. I grabbed it, threw it to my brother. Looked down and a giant wolf spider was crawling up my arm. I freaked out and shook it off. Looked down again; it was coming up my shirt.

Wolf spiders are amazingly fast. I have trained my wife not to kill them, even in our house. Most of the time they hide and you never know they’re there, but they kill lots of insects that you don’t want around, like roaches. We live in Florida and Florida has some monster sized roaches. That’s why the spiders are so large.
One night I turned on the lights in the kitchen and there was a huge roach in the middle of the floor. I happen to see a huge wolf spider peeking out from behind the refrigerator. I bent down and flicked the roach towards the spider and in the blink of an eye, she leaped on that roach and I could hear the crack of her fangs puncturing through the roach’s skeleton. The roach died quick and the spider scurried off behind the refrigerator with her meal.
We rarely see any roaches in our house, which is rare in Florida, especially in a rural area like we live in. I’m sure thats a big reason why the wolf spiders are so large. We probably have many wolf spiders in our house. They only come out at night, so we rarely see them. Most people swat them on sight because they hate spiders. I treat snakes like the spiders. Not in our house, but any snakes that have made it into the house I just capture and move out on the property somewhere. On our property I leave snake be because they eat lots of rodents and bugs.
I see Pygmy rattlers a lot and twice have had to relocate coral snakes from our garage. We also have lots of black and brown widows in our outbuildings and garage, but have never been bit by one, even though I’ve had them run right on me. Just like the coral snakes, they’re not very aggressive.
A black widow will run away before biting. So will a coral snake. I have never had one strike out at me or act aggressive like an eastern diamondback rattlesnake will. They’re a bit more aggressive, like water moccasins. A coral snake bite can be deadly without treatment, but bites are very rare because of their passive nature and the fact they don’t have fangs. They need to chew on you a bit. They like to hide in the soil of potted plants, so be careful when messing around with the soil of a potted plant.
Many of the most poisonous spiders and snakes are not very aggressive. To make such toxic venom, costs the spider or snake a lot of resources, so they don’t really want to waste it, so you have to be really threatening them to get bit. One time I was using a sawhorse that kept falling over on me, so I had picked it up ten or fifteen times. My wife came out in the garage to bring me a drink and her eyes widened when she saw there was a huge black widow on the sawhorse. I told her how many times I had picked it up and never once did she bite me.
I am an immune compromised transplant patient, so a black widow bite might certainly kill me, but I don’t fear them. Had I accidentally placed my hand right over her, crushing her against the sawhorse, she might have bitten me, but thankfully I didn’t. Otherwise, she stayed as far from my hand as possible, I’m sure, because I never knew she was even there and she was huge. Possibly the largest one I have ver seen in Florida.
I came from Maryland as a kid and there were really huge black widows there. They were twice the size of the largest I’ve seen in Florida, it’s just that Florida has many more of them. They’re everywhere in the country. Our barn really has a lot of black widows. Funny thing about widows is that they never build their webs higher than three feet from the ground. We have a lot of spiders up near the roof of the barn and outbuildings, but the widows never go higher than three feet.

I looked down and it was a black furry robust spider about the size of a half dollar right on my chest looking up at me. I screamed like a woman and brushed it off so fast! lol. hope I didnt hurt it. Wolf spiders are interesting, and even if they do bite you, it's no big deal, feels like a pin prick and that's it. Nothing else happens. I've been bitten once because one was in my jacket that I had stupidly left on the ground one day. It got bound up in the sleeve when I put the jacket on, and so of course it bit me. I thought there was a thorn in my jacket, that's what it felt like. Definitely nothing to fear, and certainly no reason to kill them. They're not like wasps or yellow jackets that most certainly will put the hurt on you.

I've never seen one that big. The biggest wolf spiders here in Texas are about half that size, which is still large though. But they are not as docile as the one he found. I've tried to catch them here, but they're so fast they just take off in an instant and disappear in the brush. Jumping spiders, on the other hand, seem curious and will actually jump onto your hand if you put your finger in front of them. Then they crawl around on your hand staring up at you, so cool.

I felt something quickly move down my shoulder and without moving my head I looked over, and it was a gigantic female hogna carolinensis sitting on my arm. The meteorology teacher quickly grabbed a coffee mug and walked over to me and told me to remain still, the spider moved again towards my hand, quickly, I felt every leg as it moved, it felt heavy, a tickling sensation but strong. Thank you for this video. In my country we literally have 0 venomous spiders and yet they are killed and feared (like you said, most people actually don’t fear the venom). Whenever I find a spider or a new, small spiderweb in my apartment (usually in the corner of a stair, room or storage room which is not inconveniencing at all) I let it expand and eventually I’ll get to “know” the spider which started building it. Obviously spiders can’t be domesticated like a cat or a dog can, but most of them shouldn’t be feared or despised even though they are. I have one who lives in a web it built in my staircase (which is wide and has plenty room so the web is not intrusive at all) who I say goodbye to every morning I leave for work. I have another one who lives in a web it built underneath my bathtub and which I regularly see in my bathroom and bathtub when I go to the toilet or take a shower. I have a third who built their web in a storage room whom I rarely see. I like it cold so I always keep the windows open, even in winter (it usually gets between -10 to -20 celsius (15 to -5 fahrenheit) where I live) and so they are excellent at taking care of all the bugs who might intrude. I don’t own any pet and have never owned any exotic spider or kept them in any type of vivarium, but I’m always more than happy to let them build their webs and live alongside me. They are precious animals and I never understood the widespread fear for them (I obviously understand that it’s usually irrational and/or instinctual, especially since we don’t have venomous spiders here, but I’ve never been afraid of spiders and can’t emphasize with the fear others may feel for them).
