I had a hard time getting Dwellings of Eldervale played at the store game nights. People took a look at the box and went ‘er……no’ . Once I twisted some arms and people played it, they loved it. It taught me a lesson about what games I keep.
What I do is have two different board game groups. One group love the lifestyle games like Gloomhaven. Right now we just started Oathsworn and we keep it setup at one of their houses permanently. Then I have a second group who I play all my single serving games with like Western Legends (which I have everything for so it could be considered a lifestyle game), Food Chain Magnate, etc,. It works out pretty well. But I do get it. I have Frosthaven, Etherfields and Sleeping Gods just waiting to be played haha. May take years. I'm currently enjoying Lands of Galzy solo.
It sounds like this ever increasing pile of board games is causing you more stress than joy. I've been there with a bunch of games piling up that I'm gonna totally play someday once I have a bit more free time in my life. The truth is that I will never have time and these games will just sit there. Instead of something that relaxes me, they had become just another thing on my to do list. It felt suffocating. Even when I would play them it felt like the experience had become tainted by this stress and I was just playing them out of an obligation to "get through my backlog". A hobby should be something that makes you happy and helps you relax, not something that causes additional stress in your life; we all have enough of that already. Be honest with yourself and how much time you have and just let all go of all those games that you will never play.
Running into this problem now. Lots of Kickstarters I want to back....but lots of huge games coming in soon that I already am not sure I have time for. Sleeping Gods, Tainted Grail, and Aeon Trespass coming soon, with Oathsworn, TMB, Burncycle, Frosthaven, and more to play already. Way too much quality product, so little time to enjoy it all.
Speaking for myself I don't have a problem with so called life style games. I can play them for a few days (a bunch of scenarios), leave them to go play other games and then come back to play more scenarios.
How do I “limit myself” and how do I “limit lifestyle games” are two VERY different questions. I used to have three kids living at home. Now, just two. See? More room for games. Or so I think. Wife disagrees. Anyway, TMB is not lifestyle. Except for Shale, it all fits in one (admittedly large) box at a lifestyle cost.
The main thing I like to do in these situations is just to set aside the other games, and then only learn and play the campaign games, play a little bit of it to see how much you really love it. If you don’t love it, you should just sell it. I have about four campaign style games and the biggest one for me is The Isofarian Guard. I’m waiting for the second edition update pack though before I begin on that. Roll Player Adventures is another, Jaws of the Lion, Destinies and the new Ticket to Ride Legacy. I feel like that is plenty even though I have a couple on my wishlist as well. I think no more than 10 campaign games at once. With lifestyle games, I’d say maybe a couple.
I would say my life stole games is Unmatched by now with 260+ plays (all offline) and mythic mischief with Moonrakers. But I think there’s going to be few more from CTG.
I think being realistic about the giant lifestyle games is something we all have to do. I think around 5 is a good number. I think there is space in a collection for a few that aren’t seeing much play but you hope to. The problem is when the number and space becomes overwhelming. For me atm I would but Frosthaven/gloomhaven, massive darkness 2, marvel United, and arena the contest as games that I own enough to consider them lifestyle games. For me that is plenty but if I get more one probably needs to leave
I like cmon Massive Darkness, Zombicide and Marvel Zombies and Im pretty sure I'll be backing DCeased. I think the healthy aspect is looking at it like everything else in your house when you need space. For example: your wardrobe is filling up and maybe you have some shirts that you didn't wear for a year, its more likely then not you never going to wear those anyway so why keeping them in the first place and have room for some other clothes. So if I dont have time to play a certain game like in a year, I would just sell it. If you are also into the collecting part of the hobby, then it's time to rent a warehouse. :D
Also a big question i ask my self is do i want go PLAY the game or i do i want to OWN the game. Most my games sadly i just like the idea of having them vs playing them and that is where i try to sell. There are only are only so many weekends i get to play games. And if i play something knew that means im not playing something i love
My issue with these types of games is simply the total space they take up. Unfortunately I was forced to move into a tiny apartment with my two girls a few years ago and space is a premium. The biggest offenders currently are Marvel United and Tainted Grail but soon I will have all the content for ISS Vanguard and Cthulhu Death May Die. This doesn't count unnecessarily large games such as Everdell, Mosaic, Dwellings of Eldervale, Castles of Mad King Ludwig Collectors Edition, and others. On top of space, the first four also account for a large amount of cost. Marvel United has not gotten enough table time and I stayed strong in the season 3 campaign by buying only the base game which comes with the KS extras. I'll try the new solo mode and possibly convince myself to step away and sell my collection. Tainted Grail has been on my shelf and I love my experience but I haven't played it in forever because I'm waiting for the updated rules with the King of Ruin game. ISS Vanguard will likely become a stalwart in my collection but even though I love it solo, I want to experience it multiplayer and that kind of commitment from multiple players is difficult. Of course, Cthulhu Death May Die is likely to remain my favorite of the four for the foreseeable future. Of course, I also have Elder Scrolls Betrayal of the Second Age on it's way next year and if Chip Theory Games continues their normal practice it may become my lifestyle game. I'm getting better and better about culling my collection and keeping it manageable but the investment in certain games make that difficult to move on from even when you're not playing it as much as you would like. My cost per play on some of the more expensive games just doesn't justify them remaining. I think there are special games that do only come out once every year or two and can maintain their spot but most games really shouldn't get this special treatment no matter how much we spend on them.
I’ve found I now have too many of these. My New Year’s resolution is to step back from crowd funding a little. Not completely as I do play the games I purchase. But the backlog is building up and with new stuff coming in over the next year, I feel I may start to get overwhelmed. Love the hobby and supporting these publishers but FOMO and game bloat is inflating these prices too much and my wallet said it’s not sustainable.
I really like Root and Oath but I can't find players that really want to get into it. I play them solo mostly but I tend to play Oath solo most since Root can take awhile to set up solo. I would like to get into boss battler's like KDM but I just don't have the cash to drop $420-$820 on a game. I have actually started to get into solo Chess as well. I'm rivals with a 1300 rated bot. Nothing super spectacular yet but I can hold my own.
I used to a have ton more but have gotten rid of half my games simply because I ran out of room and time. My current lifestyle games would include Marvel champions Kdm Spirit island Too many bones. (Which I’m also considering selling) Zombicide x 30 versions Aeons end I have almost everything for each of those , along with a hundreds of other games. There’s just not enough time in life for it all. I’ve gotta pick and choose which to focus on. Even with that said…I still want lord of the rings lcg….maybe one day.
There is nothing wrong with being a collector. Unless of course, you have legit space issues then ok. But otherwise, just cuz you can’t table a game doesn’t mean you shouldn’t own it. You can love a game and want it all even if you never play it.
Your FOMO plus being a gaming content reviewer are in conflict with your timeline. You'll have to set a different standard. Not "I would/should play that" but actually "I must play this." As hard as it is to believe, Alex's deep culling standards keep him at least near the water's surface and he cuts things that he knows are good, but he just doesn't have time for. Ask yourself "Will I play this in [X] time span?" and hold yourself to it. If you know anyone in your gaming group that has it, consider how soon they will play it and will you be included. Go with the First In - First Out process. If something new comes in that is taking complete priority over another older game, maybe one of the older games needs to go as your drive to play them is not winning out. Consider overall game ratings and compare to your typical standards. The longer a B-rated game lingers....maybe its not worth keeping it around. Sell them off so you're selling off the things you actually love to keep the habit up.

How much plays do you have in CloudSpire 🤪?

Collecting? Sounds like a literal money trap lmao
Wouldn’t mind watching some gameplay with your painted minis 😂

I have tens of lifestyle games. It makes me happy.
Lifestyle games feel like a chore when they stack up and I do not want my hobby to be a chore so I've sold soo much
