Im 53 and started smoking when I was 13, and im man enough to admit im an idiot and was diagnosed with COPD a week ago after spending 6 days in the ICU and having 2 large blood clots removed from my lungs through a groin procedure. Hi, I'm 69 and have had COPD for 9 years now. Diagnosed 2 years after i gave up smoking. IF you follow all the advice above, especially about smoking, diet and exercise, you're life will definitely improve. The disease does get worse but you can slow the progress down a lot.
@@carltaylor4942 That’s such a relief to hear. I definitely will follow the advice. Thank you so much for sharing and for the encouraging words. I wish you the best. Thanks again! You made my night! 👍🏼
Thank you for this useful list. I'm 69 and I've had COPD for 9 years. Coping quite well as I exercise, don't smoke and eat well. I will start washing my bed linen more often after watching this. Also going to see the doctor about possible supplements...
Why do these types of video's always show fit and healthy people doing all the things advised? Really annoys me. Why not show what the reality is for people with COPD.
I totally agree, I would love to vacuum all the dust off of my house, I would love to be able to take all my sheets and blankets to the basement and wash them and carry them back upstairs, I understand she means well, for people with severe COPD, all of these chores are very difficult if not impossible, I do thank her for letting us know what triggers are COPD, of course I already knew all of this
They show it with healthy people because it's the ideal situation and it can be shown without coughing fits or other reactions. The point is to show the technique.. just like a trainer showing you how to properly use an exercise machine. Your attempt isn't going to look like there's, but at least you won't be doing it wrong and getting hurt.
@@exhausted11The key is to find your baseline. I have chronic fatigue among other things. When you push yourself to the point of exhaustion and feeling worse, you're not going to get better. Instead of seeing improvement, your body refocuses on simply stabilizing itself. There's something called spoon theory. Basically, you only have so many spoons per day. Both physical and mental effort uses them up. Once they're gone, anything else you do isn't going to be healthy. You increase stamina by first finding that baseline balance, and then very slowly adding in small amounts of work. If you get wiped out, you went too far. Ignore all the advice on where you should start and how often you increase it. Most doctors don't understand what this is really like.. medical school just pushes exercise as a magical pill fit for everyone the same way.
I'm so sorry. I'm fortunate I don't live in any of the affected areas/countries but can imagine how difficult this must be. Just my neighbours having bonfires can trigger mine and makes breathing with copd much harder so this huge event must be terrible for those already struggling. Hope you're feeling better.
YES!!, been exposed to the smoke from the Canada wildfires back in July. Went to the emergency room in August due to constant flare ups. It's know nearing the end of November and still having issues with flare-ups!! Having alot of fatigue due to this condition as well. Hope you feel better soon!🙏 as I hope to as well!🙏

Does snyone know if taking Guiafenisen (sp)?, brand name Mucinex, advised? I find it helpful with staying hydrated & thinning the mucous, allowing me to cough it up more easily. Also, when I got Covid, I used an incentive spirometer to help clear mucous & exercise my lungs. NOT easy but it's a cheap device, (or you have one from being in the hospital), and you can get better at it with practice.
Yes, and yes! You're exactly right about the benefits and method of action. I grew up with chronic bronchitis and sinusitis. Had an ENT as my primary care for years. Taking Mucinex daily is highly supported in their field. I go with the 1200mg personally. Just make sure it's the regular Mucinex and not the DM. FYI, additionally Cough syrup with codeine is actually just Mucinex and codeine mixed together. Codeine works as a cough suppressant and doesn't work as a pain med without the acetaminophen/Tylenol or Nsaid (ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin). Google medication interaction checker and input everything you take. It'll tell you about any potential interactions. You can ask a pharmacist for any clarification, they know more about medication interactions than doctors. Given that Mucinex isn't a prescription med, they should be fine with advising you on timing and dose
Can you get COPD even if you don't smoke? I have low oxygen below 93 usually when i lay down, and i get a crackling sound when I breathe in when i lay down as well
Did you have this checked out? I'm no doctor, but in trying to figure out why I was short of breath, I came across a few things that said a crackling sound while breathing could be due to heart issues. You might want to make a doctor's appointment ASAP.
@@monicanlamppostUnless you have myocarditis, the heart is generally the secondary problem. Fluid buildup in your lungs can cause the blood to not flow freely though after leaving the heart. So, it can create pressure that backs up and pushes on your heart. It in turn senses the lack of blood oxygenation and works harder, which only increases the pressure. It's possible to damage your heart that way. But the primary issue is the lung blockage.
I have smoked a long time too. WE ARE IDIOTS! But we can't change the past. Be sure to talk to God about your mistakes, misdeeds, etc. Ask for forgiveness. May God bless you.
Hello, helpful video, but you should not be encouraging people to eat 'Whole Grains' which recent research has shown to be inflammatory to the body, and should be avoided.
I recently gave up bread and cereals. I started eating muesli for breakfast and wholemeal bread with meals years ago. Recent evidence shows this is, indeed, inflammatory. I simply replaced wholemeal bread with homemade lentil bread and muesli with homemade chickpea flour flatbread. Recipes are everywhere on the Internet. Bonus was I lost almost all my belly fat in a couple of weeks! Both items are very easy to make. If I can do it, anyone can.
These tips are absolutely ridiculous! I like people that can breathe normally, telling people that can't, to ride bikes climb mountains, take long walks in the evening when it's damp out and exercise, let alone to push a vacuum around daily, when most of the time it's hard enough to take five steps without stopping to get your breath back no matter how hard you try. I tell people like this woman, to run to the end of a parking lot full speed, then run back full speed, now you do the stuff your telling me to do while breathing through a straw now, let's see how much of your advice you can accomplish. I bet it wouldn't be very much at all. They will never get it, until they experience it themselves. 👎
Yea I hear you. I’m watching this for a friend who must have a higher stage/ lower fev % than those people pulling weight and cycling up hill. That said, she can walk 10 mins at a slow pace and everyone has a baseline they should try to slowly challenge. Being completely sedentary never helps even though it might feel better in the short term.
