Have I made a horrible financial decision? What do you think is making that horrible rattle? Timing chain tensioners? Cam timing adjusters? Engine blown up and needs to be swapped? Will I fix the M278 or will I OM617 swap this 2014 ML550 AMG? Let me know your thoughts!
Congratulations on your new ride's purchase , it looks real nice hope and wish this does not prove to be a serious issue. I have been buying every two three years a newer car for my wife which I have given it up after last purchase in 2021. The newer cars are looking great , have lot of unnecessary features but made so cheap (brand does not matter) once the repair cycle starts it is hard to stop or catch up with. They are designed to fail as soon they are getting closer to their shelf life. Since you have the technical knowledge and experience I am sure this would not be big challenge for you. Keep your W123 it will not disappoint you in the long run I am so confident about. Wish you good luck with your new ride and happy holidays
You do want to unplug the oil solenoid. Normally, under 3500 rpm’s, the oil pressure is at 2bar, or half of what it should be. For ‘fuel efficiency.’ Unplugging the solenoid will allow the engine to run at full 4bar all the time. Everyone who has completed this free mod has reported smoother idle, smoother shifts, and faster warmup times.
Nothing drives like these MLs. I had a ml500 with the bullet proof m113 engine that drank a quart every 2k miles. That car was done in by the early Conductor plate issues of the 7g tronic. Do a trans service on that car while your at it. As for the twin turbo v8 no experience with one yet. I have seen some s550s go into the quarter million mile range with those engines however.

The om617 swap, might be the best bet.
Congrats on the purchase. Enjoy it AND the gratifying improvements you’ll be making.
