Hey Hippo...I have "stream guilt syndrome" as well. Been sick...I hate missing them but at least we can go back and watch them after the fact. Thanks for the index Hip. Excellent job on this review Peacekeeper.
Good review. I think that this is where the destroyers truly become German flavored. They lack the maneuverability and gun traverse capabilities of the USN DD's but make up for it with Hydro and the ability to do jaw dropping damage with AP on broadside battleships and cruisers to the point I consider it to be Cruiser Z-52 (much like Battleship Hindenburg).
I just earned this ship in legends and after having grinder through the mahan to get my benson playing the gaede is night and day but great review this will help me a lot in how I play
Great Vid. Despite the maneuverability issue's it's a fun ship to play. The 150mm are not a popular option. You're losing quite a bit of DPM by going to the 150's. From 140k dpm down to 118k dpm. Throw in BFT and your looking at 154k. So a loss of 36k dpm. Which is roughly 23% loss in DPM by going with the 150's. With 128mm guns and BFT you have 51.74 RPM and at 6% fire chance that would work out to 3.1 Fires Per Minute. The 150mm guns can put out 32 RPM and at 12% fire chance that works out to 3.84 Fires Per Minute. I don't think that increase of .74 fires per minute outweighs the loss of 36k DPM.
The 150's do have some tradeoffs, the most notable is that you get better AP penetration at longer ranges, making the chance of achieving a citadel (and thus max AP damage) higher. The higher fire chance does make a slight difference, all things considered. The slower ROF does make it harder to deal with DD's but overall HE DPM without BFT is pretty comparable (70,400 with the 150mm's to 70,200 with the 128's). Raw AP shell damage is lower, but achieving a citadel hit with 128's is much lower. It comes out to being a wash without BFT on the captain. I don't personally run BFT on my SMS/KMS DD's due to the fast enough ROF and prefer to run TAE for the faster torpedo reload. What I did find though, is that when I equipped the 128's, I ended up in a lot of T5-T6 matches where the 150's would easily citadel the cruisers at reasonable ranges... as soon as I equipped the 150's, constant T8 fights LOL! Guess my MM luck is low :(
REALLY on the line about this one absolutely hated the T-22,the grind to get rid was the worst ever but is the gaede better? If not think I`m gonna just drop the german DD line full stop.Any advice CPT`s?
I enjoyed her as well. More than the Mass due to its worse detection of 6.8. But I could not deal with the slow reloading 150mm guns being used to the US destroyers.
It can be a bit frustrating at times to use the 150mm's but as I said in the video, the problem I ran into was more that every time I played with the 128's I ended up in a lot more T5-T6 battles and thus could have used the AP pen at range of the 150mm's......... Switch to the 150mm's and end up in constant T8 fights LOL!
Hello, so I'm a year late but. I have a feeling the German dds are gonna have the same detection range as it torpedoes. With that said I'm gonna get the coal commander for the germans and get the concealment mod for the skill points
How did you get your detection radius down? Mine is the same as the torpedo range. If I fire torpedos I die. Telling us how to play a spaded Gaede with a 10 pt captain doesn't help at all.
I prefer the 128s personally. Rapid fire, can hammer destroyers, good all around. The lower fire chance to me is irrelevant. And the Germans should have adopted this ship as standard.
The T22 is brutally bad for me. Could never get the hang of her at all. Just anemic guns, anemic torpedoes, and really not fun to play. Gaede was better in those regards, just enough of everything improved to not be an absolute pain.
I found this video over a year after posted... as of Sept. 2019 this boat detection is 7.7... so it seems that was seriously nerfed.... but it does have the hydro.
I personally would not. I don't think you gain enough to really make it worth while on a destroyer. You just don't have enough shells in the air to make it worthwhile. That, and the fact that the German destroyers have VERY good AP.
I was having a lot of fun with the German DD line until this ship. Overall, it's one of the least enjoyable DD's I've played so far and I can't wait to be rid of it. Turns way too slow. Torpedo range and concealment is meh. To make matters worse, I'm constantly put into T8 matches where it's absolutely destroyed. I really hope the Maass is better.
Informative video, but try grinding with this ship with a zero points captain!! ..it's detection/ torp range sucks balls...thing is most WOW vids have shipped spec'd up with camos , flags and many points for the captain , not realistic for base level grinders ...
This captain on Ernst Gaede has 13 points IIRC, if not it's only 10 (I'd have to check). That could be at the high end of where most people at T6 will be points wise depending on how much they keep a ship after completing the grind. This is far from an unreasonable amount of captain skills (it's not a 19 point captain! :P). I always start my How to Play series off with a 3 point captain so I don't show unreasonable things like a T2 DD with a 19 point captain! That helps no one!
Whiskey's Gaming Lounge thanks, for the reply , well I am learning, one must adjust you playstyle when tiering up. That would make a good video for newbs...The dd out of the box a tier lower is not so punishing. You get used to it then one Drops into the Gaede.. punishment ensues.....until you get some cptn points..
It's the lack of Concealment Expert that really hurts. Without it the ship has a surface detection range of 7.56 km (7.3 with camo), which is tied with _Farragut_ for highest among T6 destroyers (except for _Aigle_ which is rare). You thus get outspotted by just about every DD you encounter. When coming from the T-22, whose detection range is not only significantly lower (6.52 km base) but also more competitive compared to other T5 DDs, that's certainly a source of frustration.
It is 6.6 with a concealment expert captain and camo. It's a kind of a bad habit of these super unicum youtubers to not mention that, to assume that everyone understands that it is implied.

Been dealing with a minotaur firing a stream of noreasters and downed trees and power outages and stuff so I missed them to!
Hey, that's why TH-cam Gaming is nice! They are always there to watch later on! :)
Thanks Lil_Hippo, I'll get it updated! :)

Absolutely! Cruiser Z-52 :P Is that like Glorious Soviet Heavy Cruiser Khabarovsk? :)
Oh no.. heavy cruisers turn better!
Thanks for this how to play. Don’t have the hydro yet just started with some T6 ships. But still like it very much. Great tips, as always
love that potent AP on that ship!
German Bias! :P

Great work! Gaede is a lot of fun. Slightly different play style than the US destroyers but similar enough that the tactics cross over!
Great Vid. Despite the maneuverability issue's it's a fun ship to play.

Someone did homework!

Wooo! My favorite German DD
Sweet! :D
How did you follow the torpedo's with the camview? (at 24:44 of your video)
To make sure they would hit...
Default Keybind is "Y" I think
Won't the 150mm gun shells overpen when you fire AP at a destroyer?
Also, wouldn't it be preferable to use wide spreads when dumping torps at smoke?
Good game play. Watching this I am thinking CL with smoke. A bit undergunned in that role, considering the short range.
That's a reasonable analogy! The torpedo play is decent enough to keep it as a destroyer, but the 150mm's do add a different dynamic to it all! :)

Just watching this recently. I'm pretty sure WG took away the hydro option.

Now the Ernst Gaede have with the Captain Skill 6.9 km (?) but i am Not Sure
Yea, getting spotted from space is tough in a DD... If you are on fire, it is almost 10km
Would you use IFHE for this ship?

This dd routinely faces tier VIII and sucks. Cossack, Kagero, Benson, Haida, all such dds completely dominate this POS
Yukikaze, Harekaze, akizuki, fantasques...
this ship is extremely weak imo also the detection range is way bigger than 6.6km now
It is 6.6 with a concealment expert captain and camo. It's a kind of a bad habit of these super unicum youtubers to not mention that, to assume that everyone understands that it is implied.
