Your videos are the best! Thorough and no distracting unnecessary fluff and flash.
I have to admit I'm not much of a participant when it comes to subscribing and liking content online, but I thoroughly enjoy your reasoned and technical approach to content and providing information, rather than regurgitating the same information as everyone else. It's time to exercise my subscribe button for the first time in donkeys. Thanks for your hard work, Rick
An old video, but still relevant.
Thanks for taking the time to explain things clearly.
From Canada. Extremely good and clear presentation ! I was looking after the most accessible option for a new screen adapted to my Mavic Pro. After 2 days of research about solutions, your's with tablets is the most simple and the less expensive. Thanks a lot !
I am not sure what controller you but I have both mavic pro 1 platinum and Mavic Pro 2 Hasselblas and I mistakenly left the selector in Sport mode returning home as I need to get done quickly. I finished and shut everything off but the next time I booted up I was in Normal flying mode so accidentally bumping the mode switch into sport mode would not allow sport mode to operate. You can check that out booting up when you have time. I did and it will not even say it is in sport mode. I still watch all the videos you make because I am jack of many trades at my age but master of NONE!!! LOL It always pays to keep ears open when a person is sharing knowledge. I truly appreciate ALL these videos and THANK YOU for making them as well. Ray C. Florida
Just got Mavic 2 days ago (6 weeks late - ahhem) - thanks for video. very nice work. I've got bunch of projects working on and I haven't even had a chance to fly it yet. I am trying to bang out my learning curve while weather is down and you're videos (2 so far that I have watched) have helped. if someone else is reading this comment - I have serious concerns on TWO issues. 1st - I have Samsung S5 (best phone ever made - removable battery - removable memory and water proof - why is this not the keystones of every phone out there now) - anyway S5 and it gets hot running DJI app. (fear - phone heats up and shuts down while in flight = bad) so you video on connecting table helps (question now - new tablet for Dad or xmas presents for kids - hmmm) 2nd - incoming phone call. when I am home I am usually working on 4 projects at once and someone (not going to say who) but (she) calls right at the worst possible time to tell me something of 'incredible importance' right at that worst moment (like a special power or something) - now she tolerates my projects so I can't get too upset - but having a mavic up in the air and app dropping to take a call = bad (2nd reason for table) So thank you sir for the video on being able to hook up table.
I agree that the S5 is a great phone and think they took a stop backward with the new internal battery. The good news is that both of your scenarios are scary but not deadly. If the phone does shut off you'll lose the video feed but can still fly the quad back using just the controller. Return to home will also work so you can hit the "panic" button and have it fly home. With the phone call it's even easier since you can either reject the call (dangerous if it's the wife) or take the call, have the quad hover and it will pick backup when you hang up. I really appreciate you watching the clips and am glad that you enjoy them. Be sure to sub the channel as I'll be posting a lot more content in the next few days. Rick
I kinda like the extra details that a somewhat older guy will provide , getting older myself :) Thanks, thumbs up and subscribed.
Thanks, I love playing with tech and just try and explain the details of what I like about a piece of gear and why I bought it to help others in the hobby. I appreciate the post and your support. Rick
Thanks, I purchased my Mavic yesterday and plan to use a Samsung Tab 7. Was not sure if usb port on bottom of controller was the same as connection on the side. The little mini Quick Start did not explain connections and now you have answered my question.
I also use an external battery source as you suggested and one advantage to using Samsung phones and tablets it charges both the RC and phone/tablet simultaneously so your flight time is only limited by your external source capacity and the number of Mavic batteries you have available. I don't think it works the same with Apple devices. I really appreciate your videos. Thank for taking the time to produce them.
Rick, I just purchased at Mavic 2 Pro with iPad 6th gen with PGY Tech Extender then add the 30cm cable. It's because of your reviews I was able to properly determine the purchase of the cable from your sight with the PGY product. Thank you for the reviews that made this possible. Thank you
Thanks Rick for the info you provide. I bought an iPad to use with the GO4 app but as my luck would have it, it's not compatible. I heard about, researched then bought the Litchi app for DJI and now I've got my large screen to use which is much improved from the iPhone I was using. Plus the features of the Litchi allow more versatility with my Mavic. I do use a $13 aftermarket tablet holder with it's included lanyard and it works great. Slides into the controller arms and keeps the iPad at a height that I find to be acceptable and highly usable without blocking the controller's screen. Keep up the great work! Thanks
Thanks for the very informative videos your putting out. I am very new to all this so I just want to make sure that the tablet if used only needs WiFi connection and not cellular data to work out in the field. Thanks again, Lorenzo.
G'day mate. Craig from Australia here. Have been watching your videos for some time now and really like what you have had to say - very informative and educational. Personally I have 5 drones (a mixture of Walkera's and DJI's) and have flown them for several years. The Mavic problem with the Sports mote switch can be easily solved with a simple file. Just take a little out of the arm or the controller and the mode switch problem is no longer. Cheers mate and keep up the great vids! Thanks heaps.
Thanks for the tip and I'll be sure and try that. I appreciate the post and hope you sub the channel so you don't miss any updates. Rick
Just ordered the 90 degree back usb to lightning cable from your link below. Thanks for the info, and I hope I don't have issues with my mini iPad 2.
Thank you for the extensive info. I tried quite a few usb connectors but they didn;t work. Eventually I used the one provided by DJI and it worked. I wonder what the difference is that makes the DJI cable work?
Good afternoon Rick,. I just purchased a mavic pro and watched all your helpful videos. The "Using a Tablet with your DJI Mavic Pro Quad" is another of your great videos.. I've been reviewing a bunch of TH-cam videos talking about using the smaller tablets over using a cellphone. What isn't mentioned is if the tablet needs to have cellular data along with Wi-Fi . So my question is can I purchase a ipad mini with just Wi-Fi and have it work without issues??? Thank you... Keep up the great videos.
Awesome video!.....Thanks for being more on the technical side..I enjoy that more...there are already enough "unboxing" and "flying" videos out there.
Connie, thanks for the post and I'm really glad that you're enjoying the clips, it makes all the work worth it to hear that! I have a bunch more that I'll be posting so be sure and sub the channel so you don't miss any of them. Thanks, Rick
Another great video. Looking for that link to the short 90degree iPhone cable and can’t find it.
Thank you, that answers my question. In the meantime I bought a tablet adapter from DirtyJDesigns that received a lot of positive reviews. It is a "3rd thing" to bring along, but it's easy to take apart into small components, just a small sacrifice to be able to use my 10" tablet. It doesn't block the view on the controler display.
Nice Video. What PinchnerHouse said below. The iPAD Pro 9.7" fits inside nicely and you can put in portrait mode where you see the video in portrait but the controls for the app are still landscape although I haven't played around enough to see if you can swap the controls into portrait mode as well. Holding onto the controller and not the iPAD Pro however, because the iPAD Pro is heavier and pretty thin, it can slide out with a little pull. I suppose you can put a little tape on the sides to hold it snug.
HI Rick . I did did get a new LG 8" screen tablet in the Mavic RC. It does measure 8.5" but it goes in a little tight but it will fit.
Mark, that's great information and I'm glad that you posted it here. I know a lot of people are testing a wide universe of devices so any information we can share is helpful for folks still waiting on their Mavic Pro. Rick
I ordered mine on the 2nd day of release and I got mine here in CT 11/7. I did order the combo pack. If not I might have got it earlier.
I really like your videos because security is always one of your first concerns. I'd love to see one on mission planning and waypoint flying. There are two apps that should be reviewed in my opinion: Litchi and Hivemapper. Litchi is great but missing the possibility to plan using above ground altitude, it comes handy to use it in conjunction with Google Earth to set safe minimum altitudes. Hivemapper instead is the best effort I've seen for keeping the whole droning world safe. At a certain point everybody should use something like that to fly safe.
Great video, I like the fireside chat. You discussed the physical compatibility, I am also interested in the internal compatibility, such as RAM, etc for the DJI app (so it doesn't lag or crash). There's a DJI list of devices that supposedly "work well", however some are finding issues with them. For example, the Galaxy Tab A or E. To make matters even more complex, is it the device or the settings of the device (usb debugging, etc). I think you get the drift. There's only so deep you can go, but even just some device internal minimum specs would help.
Forget business... You seem so fatherly in your approach. I feel at home here and I just discovered this channel a couple of days ago. I want more. I've been having trouble with my drone. Not a typically technical person but I do figure things out and eventually manage and master my equipment to a certain degree (in an amateur sense, if that's possible). Not this drone so far. Signal problems on the tablet. Been trying for weeks. Few minutes ago, finally got to see the recording on the screen while in flight but realized it's after I put it in back in beginner mode. Very scattered image in some parts and delayed movement/not in real time sometimes... Plus, it's all blown out white and I don't remember changing the light. ISO is at 100. What did I miss?
Awesome video, now the hardest part for me is deciding between the portability of the Mavic Pro but the quality of the P4 Pro
Once again, a great Mavic Video - thanks Rick. Now if I only had my drone ... I see you are sold out of the short 90 degree iPhone cable, I'll have to wait for you to get more stock in because I haven't been able to find this on Amazon. What I REALLY want though, is a longer version of the DJI cable that has a right angle micro USB on one end for the standard controller connection and the right angle iPhone connection/micro USB connection for the iPad Mini / Samsung Tab 2 (depending on which way I finally go). Thanks again.
Ken, I only ordered a small quantity of the cables to see if folks wanted them. I have a larger order arriving late this week so be sure to check the website again soon. I'll look into that other cable to see if I can find one. Thanks, Rick
Hiya, nice video! I'm quite new to drone flying but getting there! I now use the IPad mini 4 the way you describe in this video but now I've since purchased the"Lifthor" cradle that holds the iPad above and away from the controller so that you can see both screens, it's not cheap but I'm finding it ok, but the biggest problem now is sun reflection and cannot see the iPad screen as well as I would like, so now looking for a sun screen to rectify this! Finally I agree it's a lot better using the bigger screen!
Keep them vids coming!
Rick. Now Newegg offer a 6 inches cable from Monoprice for your suggestion ,always great tips from you ,thanks !!
Hey Rick still waiting on my mavic .... hopefully its here soon. I was wondering if you could do a quick rundown of the mavics camera and settings... I'm a complete novice when it comes to cameras... It would be great to see a tutorial for noobs... just on what each setting is used for, that is mavic specific... not after "best settings" just a short explanation on each function. Thanks again for another informative vid.
Thanks for the post and I'm glad you enjoyed the clip. I have been working on a "controller" setting clip and it's turning into an Opus so I'll have to break it down into sections and it sounds like a segment on the camera settings would make a perfect clip in the series. Stay tuned and I'll try and get it posted soon. Rick
Very useful video, thanks. My ipad Mini 4 does not have a cellular data plan, only wifi, will it still function properly with all the Mavic features? Maps? Thanks.
Rick...thanks for your always informative reviews. I have a iPad mini 4 wifi only. Can you explain the pros/cons of the wifi only models as opposed to the sim card versions of the iPad mini 4. In other words, what are the limitation of the wifi version tablet...what can and what I cannot do with it. And...should I ditch the wifi only version and upgrade to the sim card tablet?
Another great vid and another detail that I didn't know about... That side USB connector WILL charge the remote, even if you're using the other USB port for a tablet. I will be charging my 10,000MAh battery before I go flying again. Thanks.
Great video, too. I've got the samsung S2 tab. for the life of me, the S2 will not connect to the remote controller. I've changed the settings to developer, usb debugging, and changed the input on the USB to usb ethernet and MTP as well. nothing works to get the tablet to work like my mini 2 did with the Mavic pro before I switched to the S2. Any suggestions.? thanks
You scurry right up to the diagnosable line when you get to a split connector so you can use all your various tablets....but the information is great and I ordered a cable from you for a Mini 4 that I'll be getting to have a dedicated device for my controller. I need yet another thing to keep charged up. Is there help for those of us who are over-teched? If you develop a 4' long charging bar with room for multiple camera batteries, drone batteries, phones and other devices (I often even have studio lights with my camera gear if I am driving) then I won't have to scream when I get a motel room with one or two available outlets. Thanks.
I just received my iPad Mini 4 today to use with my Mavic. The DJI Go 4 app would crash way too often on my phone. This video was very helpful. Thanks
I'm glad you enjoyed the clip and the iPad Mini 4 works perfectly. Remember that you still have the option of using the standard DJI Go app with the Mavic in case you still have problems with DJI Go 4. Thanks for the post and be sure and sub the channel so you stay up to date with the content I'll be posting. Rick
The channel is great! I subbed last month. Keep up the excellent videos.
Rick Awesome video as always....... I'm still waiting delivery on y Mavic and so far have purchased the right angle cable and IPad Mini 4. Now It seems Ill need a blue tooth devise to fly outdoors due tho the fact the Mini is a wifi version only , can you shed any light on this ? I do have a Garmin Zumo w/bluetooth and was wondering if that will work. I am resisting buying a cell phone just to fly this drone (yes I'm the only guy on Earth who does not have a cell phone) Thanks Gary
Gary, you won't need a Bluetooth connection to flt. The controller only needs the connection cable to work. I actually put my phone in "airplane" mode when flying, which shuts off cellular and Wifi so I don't have to deal with incoming calls. I actually envy you not having a cell phone and am looking forward to the day when I can chuck mine into the lake as well. hope you get your Mavic Pro soon and start flying it, you're going to love it. Thanks again for the post and for subbing the channel. Rick
Gary Purcell and
Rick, any plan doing a pro and cons analysis of the new P4P plus with Screen? As a newbie too many options and wanting the first best possible get one to evaluate all pros and cons.
If I have n iPad Mini 4 128 GB, Wi-Fi Silver do i have to have Cellular also to use with my DJI Mavic Pro ? Thank you for your time. I enjoy all your videos. Very professionally presented and very informative.
Really like your videos, very helpfull. Would like to know how well the Mavic calibration works in a trailer park. I have a Toruk AP10 that will not. Am told it could be all the power lines or even the metal trailers all around.Whats your take?
Hello, I watched many of your Mavic videos. can you do a video that explains all the icons and the information found on the controller and mobile device? Thanks!
Thanks for the video, I have been wondering if the remote controller was able to be charged via the micro USB port while using the USB port on the bottom of the controller I was afraid to try it out on such a new drone. Keep up the good videos just glad someone is actually looking into the technical side of this aircraft. I am only disappointed that DJI doesn't advertise the full capabilities of the product even though it seems it is very well engineered and thought out. So please keep showing us the features you discover on the Mavic Pro.
Justin, thanks for the post and I'm glad you're enjoying the clips. I have a lot more content that I am working on so be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss any of it. Rick
Thanks Rick. You answered my question. Good stuff. I'll have to come up with some more for you to answer. Still waiting for mine. My order was on 10/22/16 if anyone wants to know. The fly more package. Hoping to get it before the end of December. But I'll wait anyway, it's raining cats and dogs and I don't want them falling on my drone.
To piggy back everyone else, as always, great INFORMATIVE clip. You're definitely filling the void of technical knowledge. Someone else may have asked... it may have even been me in a previous post, as those birthdays pile up it gets harder to remember... will you do a video about the DJI GO app and if possible, compare it to the Litchi app? Thanks for the classes Rick, always look forward to see what you have to share.
There is one tablet mount sold on etsy by DirtyJDesigns for $35 ($40 with shipping) that puts the tablet above the controller, behind the antennas, so you can still see the display on the controller. I've always preferred my FPV display above rather than below. It has a place to attach a lanyard, and easily disassembles and is fairly compact, made with 3D printed TPU + carbon fiber rods. The guy makes two sizes; one for 7-8" tablet, another for 9-10". It seems like a well thought out design. I haven't bought one yet, but plan to. I could post a link to it if you're interested.
Duck Landes I'm interested. I been looking for a setup like that too.
After writing my comment above I ordered one.. even though I'm still waiting for my Mavic;
www.etsy.com/listing/487009541/dji-mavic-7-8-tablet-adapter?ref=shop_home_active_2
Good afternoon Rick, I don't know if you have said this if so I do apologies but with the latest update you must take out the cable to the phone before the USB lead will work on the tablet... took me weeks to find that out. Cheers
Daniel, thanks for posting that and I did mention it in the clip but having it in the comments helps people that may have missed it. I discovered this when I started playing with the lower USB connection and I know it trips up a lot of people. The one case you can use both connections is with charging. If you're using the lower connection for your phone/tablet, you can connect a portable battery to the small side connection to charge the controller while using it. I listed a few links below to good ones to use in case you want to check them out. Thanks for the post and I hope you'll sub the channel. Rick

Thank you sir for this video. I'm glad the minis fit in.
I have the IPAD mini. Not he 2, 3, or 4. They are not compatible with the DJI 4 app. Are they with the Litchi to the Mavic Pro?
By the way great job on all your reviews. You are 1 of 2 that I watch all the time for reviews and knowledge of the Drones.
Hello Rick, I've watched most of your videos, (not finished-still watching) before I actually bought my Mavic. Just got it the other day. Have not flown it yet, still going through the manual and watching various tutorial videos on DJI's web site and TH-cam. Just wanted to say your videos are the most detailed in informative. Just a note, (maybe I I haven't come across your hands on flying videos yet) I like to see more your tips as viewed by you flying your Mavic. Are there some and how many? Thanks, keep up the good work, I have purchased many of your recommendations and now that I know your web site also sells them, I will buy some there.
Another great clip. I agree with your "slant" on the clips, and look forward to watching. Keep up the good work!
Do you need WiFi or cellular to fly and connect to the DJI drone . Mavic pro
Great video!!!! I' d like to know how long is the black short 90 degree cable.. 10 cm? 15? Thanks!! And great work!
Hi, just got my mavic yesterday and I notice a little black wire with the metal is exposed on top of the gimbal going inside the camera. Is it the same on yours? Thank you for the good videos you got out there.
Fernando, I'm not sure if mine looks like that and I will have to check it out and let you know. I know the quality control on these Mavic Pro's is very good so it would be interesting to see if mine is different. Stay tuned and I'll update you. Rick
You have The 25cm Right-Angle Data Cable on your site. I believe this is the one you have to tie up because it's too long. I need the shorter version but you didn't list it. Then you have one that's short as well but that one is for android phones, it also has an option to order the lightning cable but I'm not sure.
Kimmy, I have two custom data cables for the Mavic Pro controller. Both of the are the perfect size if you're using a tablet like the iPad Mini 4 in the handle of the controller. I did a clip showing how this connects so you can see how it works. Rick
Great prezzo thank you. I don't know if I missed it but is there a way to connect both android phone and tablet together. So I can control using the smart phone and see the tablet screen as well? When I tried to connect both it would not allow me to connect the tablet.
Great videos! I have a question: When using a smartphone or a tablet, is it necessary to have a Data Plan or Wi-Fi when flying? Or can the smartphone/tablet just be used as a monitor?
Thanks for the post and you won't have to worry about a Wifi or cellular connection for the phone/tablet. The connection to the controller is through the cable and it's only used for the DJI Go application. Thanks again for the comment and be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss any updates. Rick
Thanks Rick! That is great news! Subscribed! :)
Very nice!!!! Charging the controller with an external battery pack?!? cool!!!
Thanks for this video. Regarding the custom angled lightning cable... is it MFI certified?
I'm not sure if it's MFI certified but I've been using it for about two weeks and it works great with no "unsupported accessory" warnings. Thanks for the post and I hope you sub the channel. Rick
Great information... next question, I am getting some age on me as well. I want to use the Fatshark HDMI goggles. I know the mavic controller does not have an HDMI out like the phantom 4, or adapted to the phantom 3. Not happy about it, so I was going to buy an 8 inch android tablet, with HDMI out for the fatshark goggles, in HD. think this would fly ? I am buying it for the long range, and well a Mavic will vanish pretty quick, and like you, the whole point is compact, and if you have to buy the DJI VR Goggles, well they are bigger than the Mavic hahaha. I think they intentionally done the 2 USB's like that on purpose.
Hi Rick, first of I like your videos very much. I feel though that I need to point out that DJI does not recommended to charge the remote controller with a mobile power bank. This may damage the coulometer. Battery level readings for the remote controller may become incorrect, and the battery consumption speed may become greater than the charging speed.
Again thanks for your great videos.
- Kim
I enjoy your videos, very informative. I live in Riverside, CA. and was wondering if there's a website that can help where to fly my drone legally with wide open spaces.
Another great vid Rick. Thanks for what tablets fit and cable connections!
Nice info mate. I use a Galaxy S7 and a ipad MR7J2X/A 9.7 WIFI only. I find many times with my ipad that it overheats to such a point that it shouts down and have to swap out to the S7 to finish the flight. Might be getting to much sun heat? Had any similar issues? Anyway, cheers
Hi Rick, excellent video. Which Samsung Ipad are you using as Apple Ipad is bit expensive.
Hello! Thanks for the information on the iPad cable. I'm looking to get one now. Your store is currently sold out. Any idea when they will be back in stock?
Hey great video. Just one thing the controller charges android devices but not iOS devices. And you can convert your Mavic battery pack after flying to a power bank and charge your controller fully from the last 25%.
Keep up the good work.
Great video. I would like to know what Samsung tablet are you using?
Michael, I actually use two different tablets with my quads, an Apple iPad Mini 4 and an Nvidia Shield running Android. I have used a few different Samsung tablets in the past but with the newer versions of quads and DJI Go updates I have had issues with most of them. Both of the tablets I've mentioned work great and I think it has to do with the power of the processor inside. I hope that helps and I have listed links below to both of them so you can check out their specs on Amazon. Thanks, Rick
IPad Mini 4 - amzn.to/2fClPSG
Nvidia Shield - amzn.to/2hQCWEm
Drone Valley Hi Rick, I was wondering if you have heard about any mounts to connect the Nvidia to the controller?
Very informative video. You are wright. Keep it technical. There are enough non-technical vlog's around and you are filling that gap. Thanks a lot!
Rudi, thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the clip. I hope you sub the channel so you don't miss any of my updates. Rick
Great videos. Can you test out a Samsung galaxy tab 2s latest version 713. I can only get it to connect if I reboot the tablet. Thanks
Chris, thanks for the post but I don't own that particular tablet. I wish I could help but it sounds like it might be a compatibility issue. I would suggest swapping in another device to see if that works and then at least you know it's not the controller or the DJI Go app. Let me know how you make out and thanks for subbing the channel. Rick
Excellent video! Please keep making them.
Hi I'm a new Mavic Pro user and your vid is really helpful, thanks. I've started with a Samsung Tab A6 but it seems it's not really up to the job so I'm considering better options. The Nvidia Shield looks good to me. I'm actually wondering if I could buy or make a sort of harness for the Shield that's supported by my chest. So my hands are free to use the controller but the tablet is there in front of me when I look down. Any thoughts? Do things like this already exist?
You do a very thorough job on your vids and I've learned a lot. At 10:30 you say that your controller swing arm mount will contact the sport mode switch. Are you sure? Mine comes nowhere near it, it has a dead stop that would prevent contact. Just wondering if the controller was changed at some point during production. Thanks, keep up the good work. Matt
Matt, I'd love to see a picture of that section of your controller as it sounds like they changed it. If you have time, send me a note (rick@dronevalley.com) with a few pics. I'm working on a clip detail these changes to the Mavic design. Thanks again for the post and I hope you sub the channel. Rick
Like your video's a lot. As an "oldie"' I learn a lot from you. THANKS
Roma, thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you're enjoying the clips. Be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss any updates. Rick
Another great video Rick. Thanks for doing the more technical side of the product. I love my Mavic Pro. I'm always searching for more information about it. What I haven't found yet is a really good in depth tutorial on the DJI Go app explaining in detail what all the settings are. I'm new to the app, but not to DJI. I own the S800 and the Phantom II, neither of which used an app. The manual only gives a short description, but lacks any detail as to how you might use a particular setup. Example, in the manual on the topic of Tripod Mode. No where does it mention that the Tripod mode won't show up as a choice unless certain conditions exist. That's just one thing that comes to mind. Anyway, I love how you explain in a very concise and logical way. I hope this is on your list of things to present in the near future.
How about Velcro with adhesive backing to hold a tablet?
Hooks on top of the transmitter arms, loops on the back of the tablet (or vice versa).
I was really digging the evaluations of all the options, especially why some were less favorable than others. What I thought was bizarre though was that after all that "Well I dont like dragging 100 extra things around" stuff...you use a tablet holder that has to sit on a flat surface. Wha??? Do you carry a chair and folding table into a forest to capture that great shot you were talking about? Maybe by now you have found a very compact adapter that clamps into the controller and just sits 1/2" above to allow the minimal clearance for those larger tablets....hopefully...
John, thanks a lot for the post and I only use the easel when I'm flying with a larger tablet and have somewhere I can set it down. 90% of the time I have the iPad Mini 4/5 clamped into the handles and it's a very sleek setup. I'm fine with the trade-off of screen size for ease of use. I hope that helps and have fun flying!
I wonder if your out and about with the flymore kit could you use one of the mavic battery's to charge the controller have one (or two ) charging with the 12v charger and the last one in the mavic? Could it be possible to continually fly all day? Thanks for the vid too👍
I think that's a very clever idea and I'll have to try it. DJI sells a USB charging adapter for the Mavic cells that allows you you to use them to charge your phone so there's no reason you couldn't use them to charge your controller. I'll test this in an upcoming clip. Thanks again for the post and be sure to sub the channel. Rick
The ipad mini 3 is a little hard to fit in there but with a little effort it gets in.
On the video i believe he uses a newer version which are thinner.
It's my understanding that a 9.7" iPad will fit properly in the controller in portrait orientation and that the Go app and Litchi were recently upgraded with an option to display the app in portrait orientation. Have you tested out this solution?
Jason Bryant - Me too. Bummer.
two questions please..
Will an iPhone 5 work with the Mavic?
can I use an iPad 3rd generation with the Mavic?
Thanks,
We really do appreciate your videos, they are in many ways quite superior to other drone videos out there.
Thanks for the kind words but I'm not sure you'll be happy with my answer. I have tried both the iPhone 5 and the iPad 3rd generation with my Phantom 4 and had issues with choppy video on both devices. It turns out that you need a hefty processor in the tablet/phone to accommodate the streaming video from the quad in flight. The only way I was able to get around it was to shutdown all other running applications and drop the video stream down to a lower quality when flying. That won't affect the quality of video you're recording, it just lowers the required bandwidth for the connection and puts less of a strain on the phone/tablet to keep up. I have listed a link below for the iPad 4 mini I use in case you ever decide to upgrade so you can check the specs. Thanks again for posting and I hope you sub the channel. Rick
Drone Valley Thanks bud for all your help and great videos....
Great videos! Can you test/discuss how the mavic vil performe in cold weather, im from norway an will probably fly it down to -15 celsius. Will this harm the drone?
Very nice and usable tip.
Saludos de México.
To me the obvious solution to allow the easy use of larger tablets, like the Apple iPad, is for Mavic to permit PORTRAIT mode display in DJI GO 4. The iPad in portrait orientation fits nicely the controller and the lightning connector sits at the bottom away from the operator hands. Comments?
Thank you for the extensive explanation.
While waiting for my Mavic I am learning a lot from your videos.
One question:
The iPad Mini is exactly 8" wide.
Do you think I could still fit a 8.38 wide tab in there?
Maybe it just wouldn't as far up?
Thanks
You might get lucky with slightly wider tablet but I would be really careful not to stress the arms too much when trying to slide the tablet into the handle. The only way to know for sure is to try it when your Mavic Pro arrives. Let me know how you make out and be sure to sub the channel. Rick
Thank you. Much appreciated.
Hey
Thanks for a bunch of great videos, keep up your great work.
There is one thing I can't really find any info on; zoom on the Mavic cam, is that because there isn't any, even digital..???
-:) Per
I use a DeWalt 20 volt 5 amp. battery for a impact with an adapter from Rural King that has two USBs. It's nice for charging if you're way out in the sticks plus you can use it over and over.
Great video sir! I have a Ipad Mini 2.. are all of the Ipad mini series same size? im hoping mine will fit nicely and snug on bottom on the controller. thanks
I think you'll be OK with the iPad Mini 2. The only concern I might have is if the processor in the Mini 2 can keep up with the HD video streaming of the Mavic Pro. I had issues with my iPad Mini 2 when I upgraded to the Phantom 4 and had to move up to the iPad Mini 4 to handle the video streaming. I would give it a try with the Mavic before you upgrade and if it works, stick with it. If not, you may have to upgrade to the Mini 4. I have a link below to Amazon where you can check the specs of the one I use. Thanks for the post and be sure to sub the channel. Rick

Drone Valley ok I'll try the iPad mini 2 first before the need to upgrade, I'm just trying to avoid more expenses if possible. How about turning on the hardware accelerator in the DJI Go App? does it make a difference? I don't know.. just guessing things.
You might be able to lower the quality of the video stream the Mavic is sending back to the controller through the DJI Go application. This won't affect the quality of the recorded video on the quad but will require less bandwidth in the transmission and less horsepower on the tablet. Good luck and let me know how you make out. Rick
I gave it a try, its looked great! worked just like the Phantom 3 video feed. I can barely notice the lag. Thanks Rick!
Hi Rick;
I don't see you talking about this: At the bottom of Ipad mini 3 there are 2 windows 1 on the left and 1 on the right showing your location and direction the other only shows the relative direction of your drone. I found the latter helps me a lot. This feature is not available with the Iphone ??? Do you know the answer? BTW - Your videos are very informative and I am one of your fan. Thanks
I like your style of video. Keep them coming.
Love your reviews and videos, I have subscribed to your channel thanks. I have one question that I can't seem to find the answer to, not even on the DJI website... The connection from the phone to the controller. I understand that it comes with a lightning and a micro USB cable but. I use a Nexus 6P phone with a USB v2.0, Type-C 1.0 reversible connector (the latest USB standard) and no one has mentioned if DJI supplies this cable with the drone, can you confirm this? Thanks again, I can't wait to pick mine up!!!!!
Andrew, thanks for the kind words on the channel and for subscribing. You're in luck, the quad does come with 3 cables, lightning, MicroUSB and a Type C connection so you should be all set. If you're looking for a larger tablet adapter, be sure to check back as I'll be reviewing a few of them next week. Thanks, Rick
Wow, I was not expecting a response quite that fast, THANK YOU Rick!!! I was worried I would have to put adapters and what not or get a new phone! Great channel, I have been cruising through your videos for the past 30 minutes and saw I had a reply, again, thank you sir!!
awesome videos thank you!
qq, do you have an opinion on mini 3 vs mini 4 tablets. regarding video performace, heat. etc
thanks again.
Great videos! Do you recommend any specific sun shade for the Shield?
Hoodman shades are some of the best and they have a model available to fit most phones/tablets. I'm not sure how they would attach to the Mavic Pro controller but I have a link below that will allow you to compare them and find one that works for you. Thanks for posting and be sure to sub the channel. Rick

When using iPad mini 4 the way u do is it okay on the controller it doesn't put to much pressure on the arms of the controller? To the point of breaking the controller? Great video by the way!!
Yes, it actually looks like it was designed to hold the iPad mini 4 perfectly and works great. I have been flying with it for a few weeks now and it fits like a glove. I have the short cable I showed in the clip back in stock if you need one. Thanks again for the post and be sure to sub the channel. Rick
I've got a Samsung Galaxy Pro tablet and it is rather big. 294 x 203 mm. Can't I rotate the Tablet so that the short side can still fit? I am sure it can work! Thanks for your excellent reviews.
I have heard that a few folks are using the larger tablets in portrait mode and adjusting the screen. I appreciate you stopping by and am glad you're enjoying the content. Be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss anything. Rick
once again a brilliant helpful video!
Great video. Thank you. Quick question, I just purchased a new Android 8" tablet "WiFi" only. Do I need a tablet equipped with 4G/LTE or the equivalent to operate the Mavic Pro controller properly?
Hello I have a question. Is it possible to lower the volume of the sound in the remote controller when I hit return home?
Thanks for sharing those very informative tips
Always watch your videos. Can't wait for my MAVIC Bundle to arrive. Pre ordered 22/10/16.
Until then I'll watch all your videos to get the best tips.
cyrium1 hi great video. Just one question what length is the micro USB with the right angle in it. ? Cheers
Hi Rick, really enjoy your work, waiting for my Mavic to arrive.
A few questions I have are unanswered currently online it seems. Wondering if we can shed some light please.
1. DJI's webpage for the Mavic states "You can also add an additional remote so that you can control the Mavic with two remotes or share First Person View (FPV) videos."
Has anyone tried or verified this? I've seen reviews that explicitly say it's not possible.
2. Can the DJI Go App help us manage multiple batteries and try and use them each evenly? E.g. flight time per battery serial number.
3. Does the controller show the Mavic's height above ground level, altitude (sea level), or only the height gained above the original home point? The latter seems to be the case but I see this as a risk if you've launched it from the highest vantage point so it will 'drop' if tracking a POI.
4. Is it possible to store 'profiles' of setting combinations in the app to easily switch between? E.g. with one tap, switch on portrait mode + manual exposure + tripod mode for panoramic photos, rather than manually toggling each.
Thanks!
Excited! My Ipad Mini 4 will be my screen!
Yep, you'll be fine with the iPad mini 4. Rick
Why with ipad mini 5 ??? Recomended???
I appreciate how technical you are about everything you publish, seems like you put time into these videos. Great job Sir.
