      I'm with you. I turned 63 this March and I am loving it I have more drones then I have time to fly. But that will change this year. I will make it a point to fly every drone I own. From the toys to the big boys. Yee Hah!

    I have been flying VR since maybe early September. When I first started out, it was really hard to find good info. on VR. So, I had to piece bits of information together from different videos. My point is, for those who are just starting out in VR are very lucky to have this vid of yours. It is very comprehensive.

    Rick, I wanted to thank you for your review. Based on your thorough breakdown of the Homido goggles, I felt confident enough to give them a go. I ordered a pair and got them this past week and love them. I can fly without my prescription glasses using the adjustment on the goggles and that really makes using them much more comfortable than when I have to leave my glasses on. This a great economical solution. I spent about $120 including shipping versus $1000-$2000 minimum for an Oculus style googles. Again thank you for your thoroughness as l was able to make a much more informed purchase.

      Bruce, thanks for the comment and the feedback. I love these goggles and have tried a few other pairs that didn't really impress me. I'll be doing a separate review clip for the Homido model I used in the clip for other subscribers since I've gotten so many questions about them. Your honest comments are helpful since you're now an owner. Thanks again for letting me know how you liked them and I hope you'll sub the channel if you haven't already. Rick

    This is really excellent. I'm glad you talked about the FAA rules. As a pilot, I can tell you drone safety is really important and as the number of people flying drones increases, the likelihood of abuse and accidents will also increase. Can't forget there are REAL people in airplanes as opposed to the virtual state of a drone.

      David, thanks for the support and I knew that by mentioning that in the clip I'd get some flak but it needed to be said. I'm in those planes most days flying all over the country and flying a quad without a spotter is like rolling the dice. I know that a lot of new fliers watch this channel, which is great, but I want to make sure they have the information they need to fly safely and enjoy the hobby. Thanks again for the post and I hope you stop back soon. Rick

    Blitzwolf VR goggles on eBay... very nice. Well built, has all the adjustment knobs - 2 year warranty. I have used them now with Litchi flying my P4 for a few months - hardly ever use the Go-app anymore (reason being that the Go-app does not have the VR dual screen function.).

    Thanks again Rick. You have answered many old questions I had about FPV.
    I surely hope DJI is watching your videos and reading the comments.
    I bet in the next firmware update they will make one of the USB ports HDMI out.
    I know DJI is going to coming out with their own goggles, however they need
    to incorporate in their next software update a selection on the DJI Pilot app an icon that has FPV. This way you can get into FPV settings such as the Litchi app offers.
    Keep the videos coming. I am downloading all of them into my DJI Mavic Pro folder.

      Thanks for stopping by and the new DJI goggles look amazing. I have a friend who has an early release pair of them and said that they are incredible. They offer full HD 1808p viewing with an insane field of view. I honestly can't wait to get my hands on them and will do a few clips for the channel once I do. In the meantime I'll keep playing with the controller to see if I can figure something else out. Thanks, Rick

    • @d.hansel854

      One thing about using the smartphone in the goggles. You HAVE to land. You cannot just get close to the ground, flip the goggles off and relax. Unless you are on the ground and have the drone shutdown it could do crazy things. Things that would not be good for the unit !
      I hope the weather is better than it is here in Houston. We have rain and more rain and it is 42 degrees.

      Good call on the Mavic. It would be frustrating to have that shiny new drone sitting on a shelf and not be able to fly it for months. Also, your warranty would be ticking down even though you weren't flying the quad. Thanks for watching the clips and I'm glad you're enjoying them. You can use the link below when you decide to order the quad in the spring to help support the channel as we get a little credit with DJI for everyone sold through our store. Thanks again, Rick

    For all of you flying older drones with no HDMI outputs on the controls, try searching for The Nvidia Shield. even used it is in a high demand. Its a gaming tablet that has the HDMI output already installed. plug it to a pair of HDMI type goggles such as the DJI goggles or the Echine goggles 2. as soon as you plug in the goggles to the HDMI port on the tablet, it gives you two options. the one you want is Mirroring. transmits an exact copy of what you see on the tablet to your goggles. This post here is old and now we do in fact have the DJI goggles as a wireless option for the Mavic Pro.

    Rick, you can use the nVidia Shield tablet. Bo Lentzen came up with a great mounting system for the Shield. The Shield works great and has has HDMI output. See Bo's unboxing of the Mavic. Obviously, a 1ft micro USB with a right angle end is essential, in the bottom port. Then you can use your FatShark.

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dana, I have actually done that with my nVidia shield but felt bad suggesting that in the clip because most people would have had to buy a new tablet. The Litchi app provides a less expensive way of using FPV that works on almost every phone out there. Thanks for the post. Rick

    • @dleasman
      @dleasman 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rick, I agree. I was just mentioning it in case you were not aware. Also, DJI made a big deal of their new VR headset at the Mavic launch in NY, but no info on it since. I also think it's going to be expensive. I think using Litchi is the best way to try FVR without a lot of financial commitment.

    I just bought a Mavic Mini, which i love. I also have a pair of Headplay goggles that I used to fly DJI Phantom 3 Professional with. I am legally bliond, but with the Headplay goggles and a set of Carson Magnifier lenses, I can see perfect.
    I noticed that your company is always making combination cables for drones. Could you make such a cable so that i could connect my phone ( a USB-C connection) to my Mavic Mini Controler to my Headplay goggles ( a HDMI connection )?
    Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.......Thanks Richard Henning

    Litchi is great for pre-planned missions (mission hub) and a few other minor features, but for FPV flying with VR Goggles, the app CAVU (Android) is much better. Why? Because it lets you keep the goggles on and still be aware of your environment on the ground (it uses the rear smartphone camera). You can use the C1 button to instantly toggle between ground view and drone view, or you can do a PIP that will show both at once. It sort of gives you the advantage of the $700 Epson Moverio glasses for the cost of an $11 app.
    I also find the CAVU VR display information layout a little nicer.
    If you are an iPhone only person, there is an Apple app with similar capabilities called Mavic FPV that sells for just $5.

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the post and there are a few different functions you can turn on with the application. The simplest is gimbal control, which doesnt affect the flight but allows you to move the gimbal by moving your head. The trickier options actually control the flight of the quad. When these are on any turning movement of your head forces the quad to spin and this is what caused my crash. I forgot that the headset was essentially flying the quad and when I when yo take my phone out I flipped it down and the quad followed suit. I would suggest that if you're using this feature that you hold the phone and twist the headset down to remove the phone so you can keep it as steady as possible. Thanks again for the post and I hope you sub the channel. Rick

    Hey Drone Valley! Great reviews that are very concise and informative - just subscribed. I looked on Amazon to buy the Homido V2 goggles and was surprised by the 2.5 star rating with three of the only 7 reviewers stating they were cheap and broke after a few minutes. Now I don't give a lot of credence to reviews all the time especially with so few reviews but wanted to hear your take on this. Thank you,

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I sorted through those reviews as well and all of the complaints boiled down to an "action" button on the goggles not working. I didn't cover it in the review because in practice the button is essentially an afterthought. What it does is pop out a finger to tap the screen of your phone when you push a button on the top of the goggles. The reason it's not needed is because if your flying a quad you'll never use it and if you're playing games you'll be using a more sophisticated Bluetooth controller. I guess it could be considered a defect but its a feature that you'll never use so I wouldn't worry about it. I hope that helps and thanks for the post. Rick

  • @BostonClipper
    @BostonClipper 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you Rick. Did you test if OcuSync broadcasts a useable 5.8 signal with your FatSharks?
    There is a FPV workaround. I have a Eachine MC02 FPV Camera System that weighs only 9.9g that combined with a small LiPo and mounted to the top of the Mavic with Velcro would provide a DIY solution.
    Adding a second MC02 to the bottom of your FPV goggles aimed at your Mavic controller with a switch would allow you to flip between FPV and looking at your controller/around you.
    Adding a Eagletree Vector would provide OSD telemetry in a F-16 HUD style minus the Vector controlling the Mavic.

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, thanks for the post and you really know your tech. I had thought about looking for the 5.8 with the FatShark but have only used it up to now as a direct video input device. I'll have to add a receiver and antenna to try that so maybe that will be my next test. I'm thinking that since DJI is releasing their own headset very soon that even if the signal is there it may be "tweaked" to work with their gear. Time will tell but it'll be fun trying to find a hack that works. Be sure to sub the channel to see the new clips I'll be posting. Rick

      Drone Valley I think you are right about DJI protecting their oversize FPV goggles. Really the biggest gripe I with the Mavic specs is the lack of a HDMI port which should be standard these days.,

    This is why I much prefer AR goggles vs immersive FPV only. I've done both, and with AR goggles you can actually see your drone and the FPV view at the same time. Sure, it's a little weird, but only when you're not used to it.

    I was inspired by many vloggers to start my own channel, but I'm slowly growing discouraged by the increase in drone regulations across the country. I find myself looking for more places where I CAN fly as opposed to where I CAN'T.

    For Mavic Pro Quad, you could try connecting an Apple Lightning A/V Adapter MD826AM/A to your Iphone and effectively splits the charging port on your iphone into 2 ports; a HDMI port to mirror your Iphone's screen to your FPV HDMI Goggles, and a second port for charging your iphone or connecting to your remote controller

      Thanks for the post and I'll give that a shot. I have tried a few USB to HDMI adapters directly with the controller but none of them worked. Be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss any of the new content. Thanks, Rick

    I have yet to purchase a quad and I really appreciate all the information on your channel. I'll probably get a Mavic later this winter, based a lot on the insight you give. I have a question that's probably really basic for all of you in the know. I have loss the sight in one eye in the last year. Are FPV goggles a stereo 3d image, and will I be able to use one and enjoy it with one eye? I can no longer use my 3d tv or go to 3d movies.

      I have a few more VR headsets that I'll be reviewing as well as the dedicated one from DJI when that releases so be sure to stay tuned. My favorite solution is to use the Litchi application with a headset like the Homido for FPV right now. Rick

    No doubt, this is the best drone channel, glad to know that you are over 11,000 subscribers. I would like to know your opinion about the dpi go App (both of them) I am using the first one because I have heard that some people has had some problems with the dji go4. Keep up the good works, regards from Mexico City

      Pedro, thanks for the post and the amazing support. I enjoy doing these clips and its gratifying to see people enjoying them. I use both the original DJI Go and the new one and they both work fine for me. I wouldn't worry at all and if you do find something you don't like, you can always delete the app and install the older version. Thanks again for stopping by and I hope you sub the channel. Rick

    I saw a vid where a fella was able to sync in sum nice real goggles and use dji flight software . I think he spliced into the wire or sumn i cant remember but i feel like litchi is a risky flight app to use if it voids warranty etc

    Hi Rick, after your vid I bought the litchi app (wanted to try it anyways). Really nice!
    Had an old "Durovis DIVE" google cardbord style goggle plastic adapter lying around. not perfect but: it clamps the phone in a way that the phones cam lens is free - that means I can also use the phones cam to switch between groundview and mavic cam view. Nice gimmick.
    I will however check out your goggles - they look better. (using the Galaxy S7 btw).
    have you found a way to take RAW pics with Litchi? I did with DJI go - sometimes the weird colors of JPG pics make DNG an really nice option.
    thanks again, great video - my mavic review / aerial vid collection will be online soon...
    greets,
    Mario

    great video. Are you familiar with the FPV Camera app by Solomon Tech? It's a competitor to Litchi and I don't know which one too by. Litchi, as you demonstrated, looks easy for just FPV and maybe it does more, but FPV Camera does a lot like 3D models, waypoint missions, etc. I'm a novice. Please Help if you can.

    I know nothing about FPV other than general knowledge. I'm curious what the difference would be (practically) between connecting directly to the controller (hdmi) versus getting the video directly from the phone ?

    Rick - Been a fan of yours for a number of years, since I acquired my Phantom 3 and then changed to Mavic Pro 2, when first introduced into the market. I use the Mavic and Litchi for my business; but I've never seen the goggle icon on the app; does it only come on when it's plugged into the goggles? I'm retired (76), and I'm thinking of getting the Homido V2 Goggles. What are your thoughts?

    Thanks for your hard work, it's an integral part of my research in waiting for my Mavic....I was very close to cancelling my pre-order because of all of the negative forum posts. Now that I have sifted thru to the positive side, I am very confident i will know how to have fun with my Mavic. What's the name of your goggles in the vid? Thanks again.

    Once I get my Mavic I'd like to test FPV function with Litchi app and Homido VR headset. Is it possible to activate obstacle avoidance during FPV ? I think it should be possible. Hope to get the Mavic soon ;)

    I would like to thank you for this video. Had a Phantom 3 Pro for over a year, looking into getting a mavic and looked up this to see if there was now a more affordable FPV option than when i had the Pro. This seems to be a good option. Also I am very impressed how knowledgable you are on this from your age, not to be an asshole. Very cool you seem like an awesome guy. Hope you dont take offense to that.

    Rick, I have the homido goggles and also looking at the yuneec goggles yes I know they are big and weird looking but can I use the HDMI adapter for my phone or tablet for that or do I still have to get a tablet with HDMI out? thanks Rick.

    Just want to clarify immersive mode vs joystick mode. Immersive mode only lows left and right spins. You said in immersive mode that you took your phone out and the drone came down into the tree?

    Question: are the picture and movie buttons on the remote still functional when we fly fpv with a Homido for instance ? If yes don't we have the problem of focusing typical to the Magic?Thanks in advance , and thanks for the great videos .

      There is a single "action button on the headset that can be used for center-focus. What I normally do it tap the center of the screen before closing the front door and that provides a good compromise when flying. I hope that helps and thanks for the post. Be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss anything. Rick

    What do you recommend then for exiting VR mode if folding down while flying is not recommended? Finish the flight in vr mode? Higher altitude when taking off the goggles?
