Hello, I am doing the same, going from 34t to 38t but I am having shifting problems now and I think it is because I am using the same chain I was using with the 34, when you installed the new larger chain your shifting problems disappeared too?
Hi, Good Day! I’m currently on 38T NW oval chainring mated to a 11-36 10 Speed Deore Long Cage! Have been using this set-up since but hardly uses the first 2 smallest cog of high gear. Also, I like the speed on flat but its hard to pedal. Was thinking of should I drop to a 36T for a better efficiency and will it affect my speed and become slower, I’m only using my bike on pavement, asphalt road, no trail! Kindly advise pls, Thank you🙏🏻
I think you should build your body strength first. You wouldn't feel any difference if you switched to a 36T chainring. I compared it 34T 36T 38T to the cassette gear ratio and then choose 38T. 38T is need to many of power.
Hello ı now have 11 40 and 36t front on 29er. On steep climb ı need one more gearing like 42 and on straighr ı need like 38t front. What do you think if ı do 11-46 rear and 38t front? Can ı climb easier with 11-46 even if ı go from 36t to 38t on front? Considering oval ring
My setting is front 38t rear 11-52t of 12s. Not bad but In my experience it'll damage to the chain if you often climb steep hills. So if I uphill I changed 38t to 34t and chainline, chain. Not uphill I used 38t. Very important chainline. You need to understand of chainline.

That’s right! You need to add a rinks. Not using same chain-length.

@@merttt1923 You’re find the gear ratios and decide. I don't think there's a difference between 36 11-40 and 38 11-46.
