A very informative and interesting video. I fall into that majority who shy away from weathering (preferring to use the likes of TMC and grimy times for their weathering services) so it was nice to see how it could be achieved at home using simple techniques. Very realisitc. Keep up the great work as always James
Very interesting and helpful techniques, I do like to point out one thing, please clean your wheels running surface before putting them back on the track, excess paint will rub off and can cause serious havoc to the power pickup of locomotives.

Really interesting video and learnt a lot. I’ve only ever weathered cheap 2nd hand stuff never my premium models always using Grimy Times which is local to me. Really enjoyed the video thanks 👌
Well, have to say sorry Mike, but I'm on side with Jon for this round, powders wins it for me every time - with occasional use of sprays and washes - which is essentially what Jon ended up with anyway after spraying the Railmatch on there. A good trick, worth noting!
I enjoyed that, I did attend a model show recently were a chap was giving a 12t ply-wood box van a whole heap of rust weathering powder, he was saying at the time that these type of vans rusted away quickly! I did ask him how timber rusted? His reply was thet didn't use ply-wood it was light sheet metal!! 😵💫🤣🤣
I’ve Embraced Weathering and Detailing to Enhance Locos or rolling stock that were part of a job Lot and have long outlasted their “Best Before” date - The Mineral Wagon results here look Realistically Fab, and if “Hard Realism” is the objective then Top marks have been achieved, although most modellers I would hazard a guess that they aren’t using Studio lighting on a modest 8x4 Tail chaser may find the Results a little dark, which is something I’m always wary of and some times Less is More, so to Speak - Great tutorial, many thanks 🙏🏻👍🏻
Go buy a hornby dublo METAL loco - you can dunk it into any paint stripper. Still have a blank metal shell to play with.- even old 3 rail works for weathering.

Yes, typically you want to varnish after powders. However sometimes the varnish can dissolve the powders further. I tend to find doing heavier powders coat is best if varnishing as it’ll ‘knock it back’ to a medium powdered finish.
As all wagons suffer surface damage, especially wooden ones, how would you tackle distressing the surface itself, before weathering? Scrapes and dents from heavy objects would create dark marks where dirt might accumulate. I've not seen any videos on that.
I assume that would be using tools to modify the molded body of the model - but then that's not exactly an 'introduction/beginners' skill. Great idea though!
Nice tutorials. Is it a good idea to dip a paint stained cotton bud into a bottle of clean thinners? To me that is encouraging sloppy work behaviours. Just saying.
Has anyone counted all the adverts. Now I get there's a trade-off and accept it. But advert 6.30 of video advert 4.40 advert. I guess it'll be the same at KMW.

Jonathan’s techniques for the Mineral wagons is excellent and delivered a great result. It gave the mineral wagon texture as well as colour.
Very informative tutorial. Not keen on powders myself, tend to be a bit too messy and wasteful.
It's down to technique, powders actually require far more skill to use correctly than an Airbrush does! - keep practicing with them 😀

We did varnish the powders, but only lightly. Too much and you can get a white fog occurring. A case of less is more in a single application.

Apply a fine coating of excrement coloured material to everything below roof level. A bit like a dull varnish.

TH-cam does that automatically. It's like that on most channels with videos over 10mins long. The longer the video the more adverts.
