This is likely the issue to your power steering whine noise!
The O-Ring is $2.50 and is an easy job! Hope this helps. Try this before you replace your pump.
Part # for O-Ring 34439FG000
To anyone reading this at the present. If you change the o rings + oil line from reservoir to pump and the noise still persists it is most likely the pump itself. Get a refurbished one, replacing it is around a 1 hour job.
Or air in the system. Recommend bleeding the system as well.

@@RikerNCC There are a lot of videos floating around of people just changing the O-ring and nothing else. I fell to that. I changed my o-ring and the noise returned a week later. I will purchase a new o-ring just in case and bleed the system this weekend.
What a hero!! Started smelling burnt oil and then got a screaching noise when turning on my car. Watched this video, replaced this O-ring with the part number you listed and am back up and running with a $6 o-ring and $12 power steering fluid. I'm sure a mechanic would have charged me hunderds. Got quoted $350 Australian dollars by our local mechanic... cost me $6 for the o ring & job completed with no noise ... thank you 🙏 for the great video

Installed, bled the air out and no noise.
Today was the first below zero day this winter and my pump was screaming when I started the car. I replaced this seal and no more leaks no more noise. Thank you so much.

Fixed my issue, thank you good sir!! I thought it was my transmission. When I took the hose off the o ring wasn’t on it, it was sitting in the pump. Threw the o ring back on and refilled and turned my wheel full lock, refilled the reservoir, turned it a ton of times, refilled, and now it’s not making any noise.
For anyone coming here for this problem on a 2003(or similar) 2.5 I can say this works. I replaced the alternator on my wife’s car and had an issue with the power steering once I started the car. Bubbles in the reservoir and groaning noise from the pump. T-30 to remove bolt. BTW there are two o-rings. I didn’t know that so I only bought one. I replaced with upper one and it is now working perfectly. Thanks to the maker of this video, it was very helpful.
Where is the other o ring located ?
It’s a circulating system; one hose in, and one hose out. So, I’m assuming both hose connections each have their own O-ring. I would buy 4 replacement rings, not 2. They’re cheap and they’re very small. Hang on to the extras in case you over-tighten the first one. And you always have a spare, too.
Mechanic tried saying it was the rack and pinion 😂 much help thank you I got tired of the whining

In a lot of cases, it is. I had to get the seals on mines replaced on my 2015 STi. They seem to fail a lot.
Super helpful video! My power steering pump on my 07 STI was wining pretty bad and felt like it was going out, I thought I was going to have to replace the pump then I came across this video and immediately went to Subaru and got a new o-ring, it fixed the problem for only a couple dollars a few min of my time!

I have the same problem but I don't really work on my car... more so cause im scared of messing it up and have a really trust worthy shop. but a few dollars sounds better than being charged an hour of labor lol.

I finally straightened out my short, named The Galaxy Express. The steering problem started on me this past Saturday resulting in serious obcenities! The only way to stop it is to change the suction hose and the o-ring that hides in the connector atop the steering pump. I added new fluid and had to on / off the car at least three times, until the problem was finally dissipated. This solution worked because I need my car back by this Tuesday for my job.

You genius bastard. I have been trouble shooting my new pump for weeks. My old o ring fell apart so I tossed it. New pump makes hell noises. I don’t have the o ring. Will try a new o ring and see if that fixes it.

The ATF you are reading there on the fluid reservoir means automatic transmission fluid I just got done changing my power steering pump yesterday and that's what I put mine was automatic transmission fluid runs like a champ quiet as a mouse
My power steering resivor had “full” level stain lines from fluid in it and it was almost dry, i had to take the bolts off and tilt it to find out it was almost empty. after that was fixed I loosened the belt going to the pump which was pulling the pump itself and creating a tiny break in the system allowing air in (creating a whinning noise) You have to find the sweet spot though so just go back and forth loosening and tightening it little by little.
I say this because I thought it was the oring and hoses but it didn’t fix the problem. The two things above did! (: cheers!
I had no leaks as in no frothing of oil. I had noise though turning lock to lock. It cost nothing but savvy to fix..the squeaky noise was rubber slipping that lead to alternating hydraulic assist-juddering. I took off the belt shrouds and tensioned the rubber belt and everything is sorted. I have changed the oil. I will change the belt for a new one. A new power steering pump costs an arm and a leg. The rebuild seal kit is made of unobtanium.

Lubricating the o ring with some of the ATF will help reduce the chance of friction snapping the o ring.

If this doesnt work. But some ATF gasket sealer. Make sure its the red high temperature one. And put it not on the o ring but where it sits on around the hole/bolt hole.

@@GeorgeLeyton asi es , tal cual como el video, estaba a punto de cambiar la bomba y vi el video y casi como por arte de magia desapareció el ruido y ahora no suena nada, esa junta torica va en el ducto de succión dela bomba al deposito y si no sella correctamente succiona aceite mas el aire del exterior lo que genera el ruido , una vez que cella correctamente solo circula aceite sin aire

Same vehicle. I did this, and if anything, it got a bit worse. I’ll recheck the seating of the o ring. The funky part installing it is, I have an after market turbo inlet that sits super close to the return pipe. Basically touches it.
Did you figure it out? Maybe you got some air in the system and it made it worse?
@@block4565 it was air. I changed the pump and the same thing continued. I ended up changing the hoses and after bleeding it went away. I figure it was the hoses plus the difficulty getting the oring to seat properly since I have that aftermarket inlet.

I don't have that sound, but I do have a leak there and a burning smell. Is it possible that it's the O-ring? I didn't see any tears in the return hose, which I thought was the culprit
Really odd situation Im in. Hear me out. I swapped out my radiator with a Megan Racing unit, and had jacked up my car for about 35-40 min (I got lunch to kill some time) on the driver's side as I removed the lower radiator hose and had also removed the factory drain on the radiator. Anyways, had the driver side elevated to help flush out all my fluid. I lowered my car and continued with the install. I finally finished after burping the coolant system, but now Ive lost all power steering??? It began raining, so will check tomorrow for leaks, but I wonder if I had it raised, if this oring is leaking, have I got air in the system? Did notice power steering reservoir was at its fill mark. Hopefully it is the oring. Thanks for the upload
I'm in the exact same situation, just finished timing belt and water pump, done the 4 cam seals and crank seal while I was in there as preventive maintenance. Couldnt get much time at the car so was mostly a half hour to an hour each weekend over x-mas. Finished the re install and total power steering loss since. Maybe on removal or re fit of the radiator the PS feed pipe got disturbed somehow and upset an already weakened o-ring ? Who knows, will defo be trying this as my first port of call in the repair process
I just replaced my radiator on my 06 Outback 2.5i and now my power steering makes the noise his does in the video. Fluid will overflow the reservoir sometimes but I don't understand how or what happened from changing a radiator. I burped it too

@@ElRayDelRio I tried replacing it and still get the same problem. I let the car run without the cap on and it got the bubbles out but then the tank went empty, so I filled it with some fluid and now it overflows again and slightly overheats
I think what I did wrong when putting a new power steering pump in the car was that I tightened that thing too tight.. and I probably didn't even have a bad power steering pump come to think of it but I replaced it because of this God awful sound. Wish I would have watched this video before spending the money on a new pump but was perplexed as to the sound still happening so I appreciate you saying in the video that you only put five to six or seven pounds of pressure on that nut. People that are doing radiator changes and whatnot might be tightening that when they put everything back together? Doesn't sound like you guys needed to even take it apart though which would be not necessary for a radiator change but maybe? I don't know anyways take care of you Subaru people 🥰

Thanks for the video. I'm trying this today. What about bleeding the air out? Ive seen people do leave the lid off the Power steering reservoir, and turn the wheel (with tires jacked up) a few times to burp out the air. Others say DO NOT leave the lid off and start the car. Ive tried it both ways.... which one is correct?
i wouldnt introduce air into the system that way, but im not certain.
Careful putting a strap on those vacuum hoses, they get SUPER brittle and like to crack if you look at 'em wrong!

To those that read my post saying I was going to use the forma gasket (BLUE GOO) ... like Mr. Schock said; DON'T DOOOOWEEET. IT was a joke ... maybe. No, seriously, don't try this at home.
So I replaced the o-ring and the noise stopped, but now there seems to be no power steering assist. It's very hard to turn the wheel. I removed the o-ring, problem persists. Any ideas?
1. Check your power steering fluid reservoir level.
2. Then check it again after you’ve driven for a few minutes, giving the pump a chance to circulate the fluid around.
If it’s not low fluid level, then it could be the power steering belt. Check it’s condition and check it’s tension. If the power steering belt is too lose it won’t turn the pump.
When it warm outside no sounds but when it gets in the 30s starts to whin
Replacing hoses and oring did the trick
that likely indicates its related to this exact o ring.
Shot in the dark here since this is 2 years old…I have a small leak coming from my pump with the same sound. Could this be the culprit? Thanks!

This is a stressful sound on these. Cause it’s either a $2 o ring or $300-400 for an oem pump 😂 I wish Subaru re built the pumps…gonna get an o ring tomorrow and pray it’s that
Well just did the lines, new fluid, and o ring. Double checked my o ring and still got noise. Looks like it’s a pump…unlucky me

Thank you for this wonderful video and solving my awful noise :-) I got another issue and I have the exact same car same year XT, when I put it in park and then turn off the car it stops from lending forward a little bit like as if the torque converter is still engaged a little bit? It's like the car still wanting to kind of go forward even though it's in park and then when I turn it off it calms down. The weird thing is it feels like it might be coming from only the rear? But it doesn't make sense cuz it's all wheel drive of course. Does anybody know what might be happening? Transmissions functioning just fine although another weird issue is when I put it in reverse it feels like the rear axle has positraction but only in reverse. Any advice on this should be much appreciated :-)

Anyone know what the O-Ring size is on the hard feed line is?
Mine whines a little bit but it is making the belt slip when it's cold, may it be caused by the same reasons?
slip when its cold is telling you the belt is either super old and worn/stretched.. or your tensioners are just too loose causing your belt to be too loose on the pulleys. You may just have to tighten the tensioners on your belts, or get new belt.
the whine is usually always from the pump area, either the pump is bad or id bet one of your o rings is toast.
@@echosierraenroute Yeah, forgot to mention, i changed the belts 5 months ago and checked the tension. Everything looks as it should. Also my pump looks quite sweaty near the wheel, not the inlet or outlet
That is the wrong o-ring for the JKC PS Pump. You need 34439AE021.
The part number you have is for the SHOWA PS Pump.
It’s the OEM parts which 99% of viewers will have
@@echosierraenroute The 34439FG000 o-ring is 13.0 ID x 1.8 C/S whereas the 34439AE021 is 14.0 ID x 1.8 C/S.
I have seen many many 34439FG000 o-rings used on JKC PS Pumps that end up just leaking anyways as the o-ring over stretches.
I just got an '04 outback and its making the whining noise will this work for it too? Its got the 3.0
is it doing it all the time or mostly in cold temps? its likely a very similar fix if it is, locate power steering pump and find the lines i showed.
That video make me safe $70 so for my 2004 Subaru Legacy the bolt is different and has 2 orings

I have a similar P/S whine on my ‘05 OBXT. But mine also has this grinding noise (kind of like dragging a pipe on the floor type of noise), when making a left turn while driving or when I'm full left lock while turning. Do you think this could this be the P/S pump or the Rack and Pinion? Thanks for this video btw..
id have to hear it really, internals in your PS pump could be shot if its that bad. id start with checking and replacing this ring and making sure your PS/DEX fluid is at a good level and good quality still. if that doesnt change it move from there.
it doesnt do it with right turn? cranking hard stresses the pump and belt drive alot but if its purely right turn could be steering related..
@@echosierraenroute Yeah, the noise is only heard/felt on full lock left turns (noise is like a scraping, dragging, grinding a metal pipe on the floor) when making a U turn). And only happens to the left, not right turns. As soon as the steering is returned to neutral/center position, the noise goes away. I am concerned it could be the Rack & Pinion too. I will start by replacing the O-Ring, as the P/S pump does have the whining noise too. Thank you for your reply! 👍🏻
@@Mike_44 lay under your car while someone is inside doing the hard turns left and right and watch the steering rack and the tierods etc move back and forth and see if you can notice where its coming from etc.

@@echosierraenroute I checked the car under and didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary while turning the wheels left to right.I did notice the grinding noise is only heard or felt when the car is moving not stationary.
Does this issue just cause noises? I have noise and it is difficult to turn...
mine was still pretty solid as the steering went but if you had a leak or cavitation large enough elsewhere it could hinder the power steerings strength. your entire pump could be going out
Sounds like a bad pump to me. But you probably figured that one out since this was a year ago LOL

Not sure but I’d imagine it’s the same on all the 2.5s from that generation of subies. I’d take the o ring out and bring it to part store or Subaru dealer. Good luck
Do you need to bleed the system after this or just replace and run it?
not unless you are concerned your fluid is bad etc...i dumped mine entirely, ran engine real quick again for 5-10seconds to flush it empty again then refilled with new fluid.

Julian Slowik you have to seat the piece with the new o ring on back in VERY carefully like i say
in video as you can tear the new one or seat it improperly causing it to not be a sound connection. It could be tour pump failing to. You could post a video

I believe there are also O-rings at the connection point from the power steering hoses into the rack. Have you checked those as well as those at the pump?
@@62Cristoforo Yes i exchanged both of them and gave it to two mechanics, even with changing pump its still there, they even flushed with original oil. They said that they cant do anything so I drive like this for now

no, its just an extra step i did because i was alrready in there working on it so wanted new fluid in there. this is true however only if the o ring is actually the cause of your problem, so you need to properly replace it then troubleshoot from there, good luck@@DJM3991

Hey there! I noted a little in the video how i saw minor seepage from leaks around 2:00 right where the O-ring fitting connection is made . Only in that location however, the rest of my power steering system seemed to be leak free.

@@echosierraenroute Yeah, I dropped the old one somewhere in the block. I bought an aftermarket pack and none of them fit. OEM is a squared type. I want to use the original for reference. Anyway, it'd be great if they made a magnet like that, bet they'd sell billions!!! I'd buy two for shits and grins. XD

low power steering fluid causes that EVERY time
This vehicle never had low ps fluid at any point leading up to this issue, im very thorough in always checking my fluids. Im sure running low constantly could lead to this issue however.
