Your mate is paid by EV car makers to give their opinion. Waste of time interviewing him. He admitted that motorway charging is not good enough but wont say how it can be fixed. His arse is full of splinters from sitting on the fence for too long.
So, when asked about people who live in flats, he concedes that EV's are probably not for those people. So what happens when there are ONLY EV's available? Are people living in flats going to be disenfranchised compared to the rest of us, and be forced to use only public transport? Are they to be trapped in their 15-minute cities? Doesn't seem very fair, does it?
If he's an insider, he should stay inside... because no-one believes him out here!

I like my EV but if you never want to buy one that’s fine. I really don’t see the issue. Also if people don’t want governments that are mandating EVs then vote in one that will keep petrol and diesel cars. So far I have had 21 cars of which 12 were petrol, 6 were Diesel, 2 were petrol plug in hybrids and one EV. In all of those the EV is the best by far. Some had too much vibration especially on idle, some were not smooth, some were noisy, some drank petrol. None were perfect. The EV is closest. I love the fact that if near empty I just head home and plug it in and it’s ready for another 230 miles the following day.
He's probably joining the mob of us, that just can't be bothered talking to people about it anymore. People are working it out at a manageable rate for manufacturers ATM. I'm over talking to haters about anything as it's always just crap talk. The people will decide the speed of this transition. It's getting good in Australia 🦘

The fact remains that, according to the US geological survey, there isn't enough Cobalt, Lithium and maybe even Nickel to create a battery-powered future for everyone on the planet.
An entire new technology has to be invented before this can even be contemplated.

I call BS on this guy. There is not a lot of interest in EV's. I talked to the GM of a dealership that sells both EV and ICE vehicles. They told me that EV buyers come back six months later to trade it in for an ICE vehicle. Hertz is dumping their EV fleet because they are too expensive to maintain/repair and depreciate faster than they go from 0-60. Of course, poor charging experiences are the fault of the owner.
Because GM has nothing to offer for sale. Without making a loss. Ever thought they might be telling porky pies to save their jobs ?
All EV buyers come back? Perhaps the manager should have given you the actual percentages for people that buy EVs and trade them in. Go ask him for an honest number, I bet it’s around the same number of customers that buy petrol or diesel and bring them back because they are unhappy, some people moan about everything they purchase.

All tech can catch fire. The issue is that when it occurs, it can be controlled. Batteries in evs are very hard to put out.
I've seen a few EV battery fires and every time the emergency services have great difficulty trying to get the fire under control! As for putting it out that's not as simple as you think!

Unlike ICE's, when an EV catches fire you can't put it out.
Will it always be that way though? Unlikely. Sodium ion batteries are much less likely to catch fire and solid state batteries never catch fire. By 2030 its unlikely to be a concern.

If the range isn't going down, it's because it's a sample vehicle designed to make you want to buy it.
The range is based on previous driving style, so if someone before @ the macmaster drove it like they stole it, the predicted range will increase with a more normal driving style. I have been driving EVs for 5 years, and it is how the GOM (guess ometer) works.
Do you honestly believe that? Why would any car manufacturer build a special car as a demonstration vehicle, everyone would be disappointed with the one they purchased and bring it back wouldn’t they? 🤷♂️
@@st200ol To take it back they would need to be able to prove that something was wrong with their car. They wouldn't be able to do that. Of course, it could also be that the computer of the demonstration vehicle hasn't had enough recharge cycles to properly work out the range - but that would be a stretch.

Well I was held up for 2 hours on a motorway while the police closed the road to allow the fire brigade to deal with an electric car on fire. Using the expert’s logic that must mean that they all catch fire.
Things to love about EVs:
1. Child battery labor
2. Range anxiety
3. Risk of garage fires
4. Paying 20k more than a comparable vehicle
5. Battery degredation
6. Poor resale value
7. Reduced performance in cold, highway
8. Higher repair costs
9. Awful charging network experiences in the weather without restrooms
10. Higher insurance rates
11. Replacing tires more frequently
But hey theres a tax credit!
The oil industry is the biggest consumer of cobalt use to remove sulphur from fuel while EVs are moving away from cobalt with the use of LFP batteries so keep driving your ICE car to support child labour
Child labour cobalt is in 1-2% of EVs. Buy an EV with an LFP battery, no cobalt!
I have never seen an aircraft crash or a ship sink so what does that prove?
It shows that such disasters are very rare. People fly, cruise and drive EVs without worrying excessively.

how so? guess it depends what you mean by 'rich' - plenty of near-new EVs (3-4 years old) available for £10-15k which is well within the range of the average earner.

replacing battery is expensive, but then so is replacing the entire engine on a car. average ice car lasts about 15 years, so more or less a wash.

@@robertfreeman7906 Not with current battery tech they won't, even if everybody decides they're great and infrastructure miraculously appears. It's been shown there simply isn't enough of the necessary material on or in this planet to replace the current ICE fleet. It can't happen, so it won't.

Still not convinced. I have just driven from Suffolk to Skipton 200miles and have seen EV's sitting charging as I go past in my van and no way. My missus would never have one, she can't cope with the range anxiety.
A better question for Dave would be " Most people drive car around the 5k price mark, will an EV of that value still have range"?

If an EV catches fire, fire brigades are now having to get special equipment where they can lift up the entire car and drop it into a box because they can’t put it out. Haven’t seen a nuclear explosion personally, but that doesn’t mean it is safe for them to drive nuclear weapons around our streets. I thought that guy was meant to be smart?
It's not about EVs catching on fire. Bearing in mind, there are far fewer on the roads. Also, putting out an EV fire is much more difficult than a diesel or petrol one.
When they compare fire risk between EVs and ICE cars the stats are per 100k so how many ate on the road is calculated into the figures.

Full EV”s are the present but will go away quite soon. It’s crystal clear they are not the future and I would love you to an interview in say 10 years time.
If you let the market decide car purchases, the EV market would tank more than it is. Governments are forcing our hand.
You also need 12 recharging points for each petrol/diesel pump to get the same vehicle throughput per hour. So an eight pump station would need 96 charging stations. How would that be powered? Let alone the huge amount of space required.

Being the present doesn't mean it will be the future. Equally true for ICE and EV. When Liquid Crystals were invented nobody knew what to do with the technology. There may be a solution to transportation developed next week that kills both in a decade.

It is a well know fact the more often you fast charge your battery milk float the more it reduces the life of the cells and with each charge to 100% at the faster charger it also reduces the life..
Everytime you start your engine it reduces it's life.
Look it up about new generation batteries because they now thrive on being charged to 100% as that balances all the cells to the same voltage and actually makes them last longer. These new batteries will come with q 15 year warranty.
An all electric future involves being able to replace the battery easily and cheaply, but the manufacturers dont want that because it will mean the cars will effectively last forever and new cars sales would plummet.
Many EV platforms are designed for battery swapping. The MG4 for one. Some places even have robotic swap stations. You drive in and 2 minutes later drive off with a new fully charged battery.
So.... sorry pal.
The real test of range is how far it will actually go--ignore the gauge that says full for ever. See how quick it drops off when its nearly empty.
But most important--how far does it ACTUALLY go. Never trust a gauge until it proves its trustworthy.

The issue here is that people talk about EV but have forgotten why they were supposedly needed in the first place. The idea was to go green as I understand it. If so, why is it ok to be sold a "green" car that costs more in terms of emissions to make (10 tonnes/car according to Volvo). It doesn't help. People need to draw breath and look at the point of this chaos.

The biggest problem with EVs is having taxpayers pay the incentives in order for them to be sold to other people. If their were no incentives, what would the sales look like?

I've passed 2 totally burned out still smoking EVs local to me in the last year. Your mate seems to know his stuff, but a vested interest can and does cloud the view. As you say "he's an insider". He says that EVs are the present not the future. History is dotted with new concepts that were going to sweep the world. Only for the people to "smell the coffee", and realise it isn't all it is claimed to be.
Still not addressing the Elephant in the room though.
Transport is the largest energy consuming sector and makes up just over 33% of the total, followed by the residential sector (32%). Industry just under 20%.
So you can safely say FF is 70+% of energy consumption in the UK. To replace that with electricity means 3x the generation capacity plus extra for charging the dunkleflaute cover. Then you've got to get it from where it's produced to where it's needed and in the quantities needed. Charging 120kWh extra long range in 10 minutes takes six times the current as charging in an hour. Even a 10 hour full charge is adding 400% to domestic daily usage which is around 25kWh. That is only possible on a public charging station with a high capacity supply.
Range anxiety is a temporary issue, recharging is a far more difficult and expensive problem to solve.

Lee, mentions that fact in nearly all his videos, have you not watched them? I never use public charging so it doesn't bother me. As David said if you live in a place with no off-road parking or a block of flats, an EV isn't for you, I would imagine car ownership is quite low as a percentage for people living in tower blocks though. If you do have off-road parking then you owe it to yourself to at least investigate the option of going electric.

I don't know who this dude is, but I've lost a good deal of respect for him while listening to this.
The old saying that the only thing you can predict about the future is that it is impossible to predict. However I can predict that EVs will only become the norm when it becomes obvious that they offer considerable advantages over ICE vehicles to Mr Joe Average. Until that point they will decline in popularity.
What a great interview. As always, I think there's room for petrol, diesel, hybrids and EVs altogether - none of them should be excluded. Technology is improving all the time so who knows what the situation will be in 10 years. 🤔

No. It was previously driven hard - we saw that. So the prediction of future range would be based on the poor efficiency caused by that. Now that Mother Nun Lee is driving sedately the range will start to show much higher. The range computer is called the GOM ( Guess-o-Meter) because it changes depending on the present drive conditions from the previous ones. It can't predict that the car would be driven by Lee next day and just showed the driving style from yesterday at the start of the next day. Then adjusts as efficiency gets better due to slower driving.
My neighbors EV went up in smoke on his driveway; nearly took the house & kids with it. Your "expert" is being paid.
Sustainability has been a UN buzzword since Limits to Growth was published in '72, however, we're not short of abiotic oil (not a 'theory' but validated by researchers at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm). The batteries in EVs are made from rare earth elements which are finite, so it's a physical impossibility that they are the future. The Club of Rome are clubbing us to death.
The tycan will only out run a 911 from the lights a few times then the 911 will carry on all day when the taycan is overheating or charging
Yesterday in my wife’s all electric Nissan leaf we went to Penrith. Enjoyed our day out etc. We had 38 miles range left. Nowhere near to get home. All 4 charges at Booths In Penrith had a queue and the 1 at Morrison’s across the road was out of order. And a fellow EV driver mentioned the 3 chargers at Keswick booths are not working. And at Tebay service station they have taken out a certain type of charger that chargers the Nissan leaf up. I was certainly not convinced when she wanted to go all electric and after yesterday she is thinking the same.

Good analogy- a plane crash is an extremely rare event. If you are driving an ICE it’s at least 20X more likely to burst into flames than an EV. Fact.

It's not about EV's - it's about the infrastructure to support them. We only have HYBRIDS that can work in an 'EV sense' as they carry their own infrastructure with them! The amounts of energy that EVs require for FAST charging are 'impossible' to manage - either in the delivery to the point of need or the ability of the batteries to take it without suffering degradation. HYBRID is the future. EVs.....? Maybe in another 30 years they'll sort them.
...and, unless manufacturers can deliver a battery with the same lifespan as an ICE engine (or make the battery replacement cost manageable) then we are staring the end of the second hand car market right in the eye.
Well batteries are toxic and there is no recycling so yeah it is about electric cars.

One bigger problem is the Insurance costs because of the huge expense with accidents and potential fires
Trouble is a new Taycan in 3 years time will make the one you have been lent seem obsolete and therefore worthless. It is the same business model as Iphones etc but at much more cost. This is my problem , they are encouraging rampant consumerism which is not good for the environment.
Lease it then, when colour TV's and VCR's first came out a lot of people rented them, because the tech was changing and we had different competing standards. Its the same currently with EVs each new generation of battery technology is 10-30% better than the previous generation. Either buy a cheap EV, yes cheap used EVs do exist BTW with good ranges, despite what your mate told you down the pub, that will meet your needs, or lease a fancy £100k+ one like the Taycan or the Audi e-tron. We all have the choice.
How is this any different to ICE vehicles? The VW Golf for example has had eight different versions, many of which are updated mid life cycle with different specs and features.

Toyota / Lexus have done self-charge hybrid models for years, and are the industry leaders. No range anxiety using this technology, and just fill up with petrol as normal.
Once everyone looses their petrol cars it'll be announced it's impossible to supply the demand. Only option is "15 minute city."
The 30mph speed limit means the same speed no matter what you drive, as do 40, 50, 60 and 70mph limits. So it doesn’t matter at all how fast the car speeds up. While my ICE car is quite quick, the best bit is that it is fantastic to drive.
If the new Taycan is so much better than a 3yr old one, that makes your 3yr old car worthless. That's not a good thing.

Interesting interview, I'm not particularly anti EV and believe they have their place and should be sold alongside ICE powered vehicles , my main issue with EV's is I really don't like is being forced by legislation to adopt a technology that just doesn't 'rock my boat' or meet my personal transport needs, the more they push me to switch to an EV the more I dig my heals in and push back. The powers that be should get back in their box and leave the option as to what I want to drive down to personal choice.
I think he was slightly optimistic. I just cannot see the 2035 mandate ever happening as it stands with pure EV the only option. Hybrid vehicles will be the norm even in the next year or so. Liquid fuels will become greener. Oil will continue to be needed for far more purposes than just cars. Hopefully a sensible balance will be reached where far less oil is extracted from the ground without affecting ones right to affordable transportation wherever one lives.
Ironically Pterol can be made from Wind Turbine Operation, Porsche and Siemens have done this - Syntehetic petrol made by Aspen in Sweden is available. It will take 400 years to replace ICE vehicles like for like. This won't happen by 2030 or whatever arbitrary figure politicians pluck from the sky!

Why would they not optimise the battery regardless of where you're going without using sat nav? Why does the sat nav become part of everything? If I know where I am going I am not going to use the sat nav.
The battery is heated to the optimum temperature to receive charge. If it’s not going to receive charge you are using more energy and decreasing your range. It’s optimising the battery for charging not for performance.

I've got a Toyota RAV4 hybrid AWD and very happy. If I was given a free EV, I would sell it immediately.
We have a '23 Corolla hybrid AWD sedan, and are awaiting delivery of a new Corolla Cross hybrid next month. My only complaint is that they don't come with a spare tire, and if you buy one you can't put it in the spare well because they stuck a small electrical component (presumably for the rear motor) right in the middle of it. Really dumb.
I ‘ve got a 2007 Toyota RAV4 XT4 2.2 D-4D and very happy. If I was given a free hybrid or EV, I would sell it immediately, too.

It makes me laugh when I see them racing around the track and when the battery goes down they have to go into the pits and change cars how stupid is that
Formula 1 has been like watching paint dry for decades. There's far too many rules.
Politicians love diversity except when it comes to the fuel used to power your car. There is wisdom in the old adage about the danger of putting all your eggs into one basket. Diversification and moderation is needed in life as well as cars.
Its not how many catch fire its thermal runaway that's the issue. Once alight nigh on impossible to extinguish.

EV do not catch fire more often but they are harder to put out and give of dangerous chemicals into the air
ICE cars put out dangerous byproducts into the air for the whole of their life-cycle so there is that.
@@st200ol but they dont put out instant environmental damaging chemicals like an ev ... when they burn and ev are also responsable for higher green house gasses during the product.... as you say there it is

There are a few questions I would like to have asked, how much raw materials are in the ground waiting to be mined? What countries have the largest resources raw material? China is one, Africa is probably another, have to be careful with that because China have got a foot in those countries as well and maybe Russia? The other questions is how much effort has been put into recycling old LI batteries to reclaim the needed material to make new ones? No a lot it seems at the moment.
There are still a lot more questions than answers it seems.
There are companies out there buying used batteries and they said they can’t get enough of them.. sorry can’t remember what they use them for but they are definitely repurposed.
@@barronsclose Thanks for that, I hope being repurposed means making new EV batteries and not something else, I'm concerned that they keep digging stuff out of the ground and I'm not sure they know exactly how much is in there, we do know about oil and how much there is, but the materials to make new batteries? I'm not so sure.
